Review from David K.
I love my actual apartment. After living in DC for so long, the prices seem low for what I get. We are in the 1 BR with loft model, and the floorplan is awesome. I love having the loft as an office, and the space will be great when we have people visiting. The location is awesome, a block from the embarcadero which makes my training runs easy. Bars in the Gaslamp are a 5 minute walk, so is Ralphs, and now the awesome Lions Share restaurant/bar is across the street. Parking is easy, and I've found the leasing office to be helpful and friendly. Oh, and the rooftop pool is awesome, although you need to be there early to snag a lounge on nice days.
The area is nice, there aren't vagrants this deep into the Marina District, and traffic is low to non-existent. The only main downside is the fact that there are train tracks right behind the building. A freight train comes through several times a day and they are very generous with their horn. I haven't been woken up by this yet, but it definitely rumbles through every evening. I'll have to wait and see how the summer goes once the pedicab drivers show up this summer (if the online reviews of this place are true), but I can't imagine it will be that bad.
All in all, I am happy with my apartment here and it's not like the train was a surprise. -

This place is alright...just alright. Yes, we have a wicked view of the bay and the USS Midway. I just wish I had a bigger kitchen. And a washer and Dryer that wasn't 4 floors below me, especially when the elevator in my part of the building has been under repairs for 2 months!
Not that I'm bitter or anything...
Other than that, it's a nice place to live. Quiet area and from our place we don't hear the trains as much as other residents seem to. Love being able to walk to places but not being right in the middle of downtown. -

This is hands down the worse apartment I have ever lived in. If you are looking to move downtown, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere! Let me start off with saying I am not a yelper...this is actually my first one and I felt compelled because this place is THAT BAD.
I had mold on my window- no big deal right? Well Im allergic to mold, and turns out it can be pretty bad for you. When I reported the mold to the office they came to clean it and told me to "keep my window open about an inch" this was in November...
Then when that didn't help and I was getting sick from the re-growing mold they came back and cleaned and told me to "shower with the bathroom door closed"
Well, needless to say that did not work.
FINALLY after months they replaced my window...or supposedly because the mold grew back and water was still dripping down my window sill.
After that I decided I could stick it out, my lease was over in May but my new lease didn't start till Sept. I thought that the window wouldn't be a problem because it was summer. Then i got a letter from the office stating that fair market rental value of the apt. went up and that if I wanted to re-new my lease the rent would go up $600... Yes $600.. I was paying around $1395 for a one bedroom disastrous apartment and they wanted $1, 995.
I put my 30 days notice in and two days later discovered that my entire wall in my kitchen was covered with green and brown mold. It covered one of my couch cushions and slowly creeping up the entire wall. Apparently a pipe broke from upstairs. Perfect. So someone came and tore down my wall to fix the pipe, (all during my finals I might add). When I went to use the dishwasher smoke started coming out and my apartment smelt like burning wire....They had to fix it twice, still didn't work.
I am not a crazy ranter, but this place was terrible. And if that wasn't enough, watch your step through the stairwells and hallways because there is ALWAYS dog pee -

Archstone Harborview in Downtown San Diego has been the WORST living experience EVER! I cannot express how much we dislike this company. We lived there for a year and half- Most of the women who work at the office are the epitome of horrible customer service. They were always so incredibly rude and condescending. My name was never on the lease, but it was not by choice. I moved in with my fiancé and gave them an application- well, they lost it. After explaining to them that I was not comfortable with my bank number, SOCIAL SECURITY number, car information, etc. being lost, they told me, "Don't worry, we know you live here- you don't need to fill out another one." I was not 100% okay with this but if they did not care, neither did I. After a while, after trying to get things fixed, picking up packages sent to me under my name, they told me that I HAD to be on the lease. We were moving two months later so I chose to not have my credit ran. After we moved out, my name was still not on the lease. If I needed anything done, my fiancé had to contact them. I rented a parking spot from a lady- the spot was in the building over but it was fine- it was large- most spots here are tiny. My fiance's new car was scratched three times. One day, I come home from work and find a HUGE truck with a handicap sign on it parked in my spot (I should add that I had 2 angry notes on my car because I was not handicap and parked here, this spot was given to me- I did not have a choice)- We called Archstone to have it moved. After a FULL DAY of not having a parking spot (they gave me a temp one until they figured it out) they told us that they had to okay that truck taking my spot because they were handicap and it was a handicap spot so I had to move my vehicle. WHAT was there to figure out? Another car was parked in MY SPOT that I had to pay an extra $120 a month - TOW IT! This was not the only handicap spot available, but it was one of the larger spots. I ended having to switch my spot- The real reason my spot was stolen was because he had a truck- I saw him walk, hop, jump and run out of his car several times. He was far from handicap. My bike was stolen. When we moved out we went to pick up our bikes from the "securely locked" bike rack room and it was not there. We immediately told the office girls and the answer was, "Ohhh, so sorry (a very fake one), maybe you can post pictures of it around the neighborhood? We aren't responsible- Aww, so sorry." It was so incredibly fake- they simply did not give a flying fuck. My laundry was stolen three times. ALL of our clothes! Again, they did not care. The laundry room is right next to the garage entrance- this "secure gate" was ALWAYS broken! It was always open. Anyone could walk in. Our closest elevator was literally broken for 3 full months. It was HORRIBLE! We lived in the third floor so if we had to do laundry, get groceries or get anything heavy, we had to go up and down three stories. I dare to say that out of the 18 months or so we lived here, the elevator worked for 9 months. We just received our final bill. It was a total of $2,464.09. We broke our lease (clearly, we were miserable here! We could not wait until October) and were prepared to pay the $1,400 it cost to break it- On top of that, we were charged $225.81 for staying there extra days after we said we would move out. INCORRECT! We moved out the 27th of April (We had until the last of the month)- We moved far from here so we called multiple times to ask them if it was okay to mail them our keys because we lived far. No one ever called us. Every time I would call, I would get an answering machine. My fiancé works 16 hour days at times and was basically impossible for him to drive there when they were open (same with me). Finally, he decided to drive there because we were getting worried. Well, they said they never got the messages! They said that the only way they would know that we moved out was by them receiving the keys, which is why we were charged until we returned the keys- No one EVER explained this to us. No one ever called us back. No one tried to contact us! If someone said they were moving out on a specific day and you still have not received the keys, would you not try to contact the person and explain to them what the consequences are? Well, not Archstone- Not their employees- doing this would make sense and would require work, so no. Not them. When we moved in, the carpet was clearly NOT new. They told us it was. They cleaned it prior to us moving in- After being there for a week spots started resurfacing. This happens when the carpet is OLD. Well, they are charging us $420.21 to replace the carpet. We had them pain an accent wall- they explained to us that if we chose from their colors we would not have to repaint before we left, so we picked one of their colors. Well, they are charging us $130 to repaint, and $33.26 for paint supplies!! The list goes on and on... We were warned. We were told by many people

This place is BEYOND horrible. We've only been here a month and the following are annoyances we've ran into so far and archstone cant do anything about:
1) The water has gone out THREE times in the past month, all of the outages have lasted a significant amount of time and cause major inconvenience. The only people associated with archstone on the premises hide in their offices when this happens too so you can't ask if there's a projected time when the water might come back.
2) There is zero soundproofing. I can hear my neighbor using the restroom. I can hear the kids across the hall watching Disney movies. I can here EVERYTHING that happens in any of the units that face the courtyard which includes: sex, arguments, late-night parties, tv, music, dogs barking, etc...
3) Please do not let them convince you the gym is "modern." There are pieces of cardio equip in there that might be older than me. And the updated pieces don't work properly either. Complaints and requests for maintenance go unanswered.
4) If you have more than one car you're pretty screwed. Even though half the spots in the lot are unused they will not sell you one while the apartment it belongs to is unoccupied. When we were considering moving in we asked how much parking in the nearby lots was and they told us, point blank, it was $80 or $90. This was a bold-faced LIE. Upon moving in we found out that it's actually $120-$180 and it had been for quite some time. They clearly lied to us to make the sale.
5) This place is run like we are rebellious kids. I often feel like I'm a 12-year-old at summer camp being scolded by the camp counselors. For instance, one day I was at the gym and there were a bunch of other tenants watching the World Cup on the TVs. It was just me and one other girl on a treadmill. Plenty of space for the guys. Yet, one of the leasing officers decided she needed to tell them they weren't allowed to watch TV in the gym unless they were working out. Im sorry but, we pay rent, the gym is for us, especially when you're not in anyone's way I don't see the major problem. Like I said, we're treated like bad little 12-year-olds.
Currently, I am sitting waiting to be able to make dinner and give my pup a fresh bowl of water because the water has been out for a little over 3 hours now. I'm usually pretty laid back and happy if I've got a place to call home that allows my pup as well. But, what can I say, this water issue has given me some free time to jump on Yelp. -
Review from Dan N.
This place isn't as bad as people make it out to be.
I've lived here for almost a year and generally I'm pretty happy with my experience.
It's a great location right near downtown and close to the harbor and seaport village.
Parking is no problem here which is a nice luxury. The rent is competitive compare to other apts.
The staff is friendly and generally helpful.
The gym is nice, and the business center is useful.
However, there are cons this to place as well.
The train that goes by is very annoying and although you get use to it after a while it's still something that you hear everyday.
The people who have dogs here don't pick up after their pets which is totally irresponsible.
During the summer all the pedi cab drivers move in here. 20 people to each apt and they hang out all day in the gym cause of the free wifi and business center and bath in the pool. It's ridiculous!
They turn off the water at least once a month for repairs sometimes for as long as 12 hours!
The walls are thin so you can hear your neighbors and if they play loud music it sucks.
Homeless people hang out across the street.
If you really want to live downtown this place is a viable option but be aware of the things I mentioned above. If you can get a good deal on rent like I did it's worth it but don't overpay to live here because there are better places in downtown to go to. -
Review from Mike M.
San Diego, CA
Archstone was the first place I lived in downtown San Diego, and I'm so glad it wasn't an indicator of what was to come.
My girlfriend and I stumbled across an ad on Craigslist to take over a lease for the remaining 8 months. We loved the top floor unit because it had 20 foot high ceilings, a fireplace, and a cool partial view of the water and Coronado Bridge.
We took over the lease and loved it there for a couple months. Then we met our neighbor that happened to share a 20ft high wall with us. This guy gives you the hebe gebe's right away...bad vibes for sure.
A few months in we were privileged to one of his 12 hour parties...they start at 10pm and go until 10am. He obviously had some serious stereo equipment in his apartment because our stove would shake during these parties. It was so penetrating that we literally had to stay at a friends house for the night, even after having the police come out...twice.
The facility itself is run down and has lots of "quirks". Our hallway had a gaping 5' hole in the drywall for nearly a week before they covered it with black plastic, and another 2 weeks before it was actually repaired... and another week before it was painted.
The pool was the biggest let down. The pictures make it look luxurious, but trust me when I say, its not. Its a glorified kiddy pool, and doesn't get deeper than 3 feet. Its probably about 20' by 10'. The jacuzzi wasn't terrible, but it was broken 20% of the time we went to use it.
The good thing about Archstone is the price to move in: $299 deposit. The thing to note is that you WILL NOT GET YOUR DEPOSIT BACK, in any case. They conveniently billed us $200 for painting and and $99 for cleaning upon our exit, which ended up being $330 total (don't ask me how).
And another BIG IMPORTANT NOTE...if you move into the East Building (780 West G instead of 820 West G), you will be awoken nightly by freight trains. The building borders the tracks, and this is a huge caveat to living here. The trolleys go by without a sound, but the freight trains are literally the loudest noise I've ever heard in my life. I've been to air shows with fighter jets, the loudest of concerts, but the freight trains and their mandatory horn blowing at the intersection outside the window is the loudest noise my ears have heard. PAINFULLY loud.
== Location: The Marina District is really cool and pretty clean. Brickyard Cafe across the street is really fun on weekends. Train tracks are a huge drawback!
== The Living: Not horrible inside the apartments, and some are decently spacious (especially the 4th floor with 20ft ceilings). The rest of the building SUCKS.
== Ambiance: Stay away...lots of young people (I'm one) but they don't seem to care how the building looks, and they trash it.
== Overall: I would never suggest a friend move in here unless they absolutely couldn't afford a deposit elsewhere. There are better places for less money. -
Review from Nick B.
San Diego, CA
I lived at Archstone Harborview for a year. Overall it was an OK experience but in my opinion there are better, more affordable apartments/condos for rent in the Downtown San Diego area.
I'll start off with the positive... The location itself is pretty good, it's within walking distance to a Ralph's, several big chain pharmacies, and Horton Plaza. It's also less than a 15 minute walk to both Little Italy and the Gaslamp. I also enjoyed being close to the harbor (although the tourist foot traffic sometimes gets annoying). If you're a runner you can start at the apartment building and run down Harbor Drive to Spanish Landing and back which equals a roughly 7 mile workout. Running downtown can be somewhat problematic especially during the tourist season.
The building is nice from the outside and has a secured parking garage. Which leads me to my first complaint... The parking spots are rather narrow and it's hard to fit two full size cars side by side. I drive a mid-size SUV and my parking spot neighbor drove a full size BMW. If he didn't park perfectly straight I couldn't park well. I mastered the art of backing into parking spots within weeks of moving in... That's really the only suggestion I have for you if you drive a larger car or truck.
In the lower level parking garage lives a stray cat... A stray cat that is infested with fleas during the summer months. I used to notice fleas on my legs while waiting in the garage's carpeted elevator area. The fleas subsided when the weather cooled down but pest infestation isn't something thats fun at all.
The elevators seemed to always be out of order, especially the north elevator at the F street entrance of the 820 building. They are finally replacing it after multiple breakdowns which resulted in my neighbor being suck inside for 45 minutes. After he told me the story of getting stuck in there while holding a full bladder encouraged me to take the stair more often then not.
There were also frequent water shut offs. The excuse the management gave had to do with faulty plumbing valves that needed to be replaced, but judging from the almost weekly water outages I think there may be more to the story than they're letting on.
I had a smaller one bedroom unit. The appliances were adequate. I chose a unit with stainless steel appliances which costs a bit extra. If you should decide to move to Archstone Harborview be sure to fully inspect the unit with the maintenance person assigned to do your pre-move in walk through with you. Take special note of the condition of the paint on the walls. The paint job was a bit sloppy and there were actually hairs stuck to the walls prior to painting so guess what was permanently on the bathroom walls... strands and strands of hair!
There are some common charges associated with renting in this building. On average I would pay an additional $50 per month for trash, sewage, hot water, water and gas. I'm not sure why they charge for natural gas since none of my appliances were gas and there was a separate hot water charge if the main boiler is gas powered.
The hallways seem like a maze and used to confuse my visitors, which may say something more about them than the actual building. The only entry call box is located on the G Street entrance which makes it a bit inconvenient if you live closer to the F Street lobby.
The walls seem to be thinner than other apartments I've lived in. I could hear the intimate details of both my next door neighbor's and upstairs neighbor's private lives. Luckily for me neither of the gentlemen seem to be what you would call a Lothario... Who know's what they said/thought about me.
As I'm sure you've deduced, privacy seems to be lacking at this building. Most units face a kind of courtyard thing which echos and amplifies conversations. Be sure to close your windows if you have some ultra personal details you are discussing. It's kind of like a beehive being so close to one another... You can see right into your neighbors units. Be cautious of your actions with the blinds open, I learned this the hard way.
There are ample washing machines and dryers spread across several different laundry rooms. No real complaints about that... However it did seem like the water levels must be set to an extra low setting, sometimes it seemed that the closes didn't really feel cleaned. My solution to that was to wash smaller loads.
You can pay your rent online which is convenient. The grace period is only 1 day which seems kind of strict. Most places I've been in give you a 3-4 day grace period. I had limited interaction with the office staff so I really don't have an opinion of them.
All in all Archstone Harborview isn't a bad place but I think you can find a nicer unit and a more reasonable price if you rent from a broker or investor that has an opening in one of the high rise condo buildings. -
Review from Carlos P.
San Diego, CA
Assuming you already have visited the community this is my review:
Service: I'm very pleased with it. They get back to you right away and get things done.
Amenities: I really don't use the pool that much, the laundry room has plenty of machines and is always well maintained. The gym is always clean and most things usually work or get fixed quickly.
Noise: This is one of two reasons why I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5. My apartment's balcony faces the courtyard of the second building (near Pacific Hwy), so the trolley nor the freight train aren't a big issue for me at all. If you have your AC or a fan turned and close your windows it will be okay. The quit zone project should fix this.
Location: This should be easily the best place to live in Downtown. Everything is close: Little Italy, the Gaslamp, PETCO Park/East Village, Seaport Village, the I-5, the I-805, the 163. I like that you are not in the middle of the noise but are still a few blocks away from the action.
Parking: It's a plus to have an assigned parking spot included in the rent. Most spots are narrow (but I guess it's like that in most apartment garages). For guests, there are plenty of parking spots on G, F or Kettner most of the time.
Rent: Last time I checked, it is comparable to other places downtown ... and again this got to be one of the nicest areas to live in Downtown.
Neighbors: Most pet owners are very irresponsible and don't clean after their dogs, so watch out while walking on the hallway or taking the stairs. Depending on your neighbors you may have problems with noise/soundproofing, hopefully a barking dog, or a loud couple/roommates won't live next to you, I've been fortunate the past year. Overall, most people are very nice and considerate.
In short words, I have what I want here, at least for the time being. It's very safe to walk around the neighborhood at "any" time, Horton Plaza, Ralph's, Little Italy, Seaport Village and nightlife are just are short walk away.
I've lived here for almost two years now. -

When I fiiiiirst moved downtown I lived here.. For apartments these are actually pretty nice. I would have actually preferred this place over the condo I rented after living here. The kitchens are a bit dated, but they offer pretty good bang for your buck.
I had one little problem with the staff but it was quickly corrected, and the girl was apparently new. At night they have a guard on the G st side and he makes rounds every couple hours.
There is also a pool on the roof that has a great view. I actually enjoyed my time there, if you are moving downtown it's a good starter area because it's a bit segregated from the dense sections (ie gaslamp, or EV) and still very quiet (when the train isn't blasting through). There is also lots of street parking in that area which is a definite plus when friends are trying to visit. -

Roof Top, 4th of July one of the years i spent in San Diego made me fall in love with this place. All though i never really lived there, it was a friend of mine but inspired to look into Archstone in LA where i leased for a while. This location however has it all, you can't complain about little things when the water is a block away from you and downtown is in your backyard. No apartments building around is perfect. Parking could be a hassle a little if you don't have a spot. very flexible leasing Terms. Make sure you check out the Roof Top :-)

This was the first place my girlfriend and I lived in San Diego. We moved from the east coast and decided it'd be nice to live 'in the city'. I'll break it down:
Good: Location. Can walk to the grocery store (Ralphs), Petco Park, The Fish Market, Horton Plaza, Little Italy.
Has a rooftop pool with good views during fireworks shows. In addition there's a relatively clean hot tub up there too.
Underground garage is pretty solid for people who don't want the so-cal sun damage on their cars.
Fireplaces. Totally underrated in San Diego on a cool winter night or morning.
Bad: Elevators are broken almost as much as fixed.
Don't let anyone tell you that you can't hear the trains on the east side of the complex. Its like the train is running through your bedroom. We had to buy a jet engine of a fan to blow white noise so we could sleep.
Carpet everywhere. If that's your thing you'll love it.
Kiss your security deposit good bye.
High Rent. We moved 2 miles away to golden hill, are saving $300 a month, have 200 more sq. ft., hardwood floors, a yard, w/d in unit, etc. Its not hard to find more for you money.
We enjoyed throwing a few parties there, but using the gated entry was a pain until they finally put us in the directory. (Took 6 phone calls, 3 in-person visits and 6 months...)
All in all... Meh. I'm glad we left when they tried to hike our rent to 2k a month. -

San Diego, CA
I have really really loved living here. I have a one bedroom and it's the perfect size for me. I have two balconies, which is extremely nice to have. My view is of the building across the street and the walkway. It's actually not too bad. At another apartment that I had my view was of the apartments across from me, but it was very claustrophobic-this one is not. You can see people walking through, there are large trees, and you can still see some of the street and buildings.
The service at Archstone is great. Everyone working there has always been extremely helpful and very nice. I have had one service request that was addressed immediately. All the staff, by the way, have always been very nice and pleasant. When I moved in, the staff (maintenance staff) actually watched my dog for a few minutes while I made a couple trips.
The apartment complex itself is very nice. It's not too big, but yet not too small-very comfortable to live in. There have been times when I have walked out and saw some "droppings" from other tenants' animals, but the staff is quick to respond. Again, they're very helpful.
The location is absolutely PERFECT! I love walking my dog to Seaport village-it's beautiful and can either be relaxing or exciting depending on whether there are a lot of tourists. You can also walk to Horton Plaza and Ralphs and the Gaslamp. I also walk to Padres games all the time. I love being closer to the water because you're part of the city, but just a little further from the night crowds.
The reason why I have not given this five stars is because:
1.) the parking is difficult as mentioned. The spots are VERY small and it can be challenging to get in and out of them, BUT that's just how it is downtown at most apartments.
2.) The train does take FOREVER to go across the tracks and it's VERY LOUD! However, they're doing something (supposedly) to minimize the freight train sound-it's called the Quiet Zone Project. That may not be the apartments fault, but it certainly is annoying. They made the street to a one way street. So, instead of turning right ten feet to get to the main roads, you have to turn left and stop at the tracks then do a couple more turns to get back to the road. NOT FUN-EVER! However, I'd still live here because all the pros about this place are definitely worth the extra 3 minutes of commute.
3.) They did just up the prices by a lot, sadly. They seem to be on the upper end of other places downtown. Again, I like it so much here I'm considering just paying it!
All in all, a really great place to live and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to live downtown San Diego. -
Review from Reid B.
San Diego, CA
My girlfriend used to live at this place before we began co-habitating, and I spent lots of time there.
First order of business: this place practices one of the single-worst residential ripoffs I've ever heard of: you WILL NOT be getting your "deposit" back, regardless of the condition of the place when you leave. It doesn't matter if you wrapped the whole place in plastic the day you signed your lease and never set foot in the apartment--too bad. You will be told that it's the company's policy to repaint and replace the carpets every time a tenant changes. That is lovely, but how is it that the outgoing tenants should have to pay for this even if they left the place in perfect shape? How can you call it a "deposit" when you have no intention of giving it back? I'm sure it's in the fine print somewhere when you sign the lease, so caveat emptor and all that...but that doesn't change the fact that it's an unusual and unreasonable policy.
Tandem parking is a pain in the ass. You will be forever juggling schedules and swapping keys with your spouse/roommate/whomever. No, thanks.
The layout that she had was the loft-like 1-bedroom with the 20-ft. ceilings. It would be a pretty cool floor plan for a single person or a couple who really, really gets along. I would highly advise you not lease it under a platonic roommate situation, there is just no privacy. There are no internal walls except for the bathroom so it's really more of a studio, just with the "bedroom area" upstairs. The kitchen was lacking in pretty much every way: tiny, little storage, outdated fixtures, no icemaker in the fridge, microwave which would not even fit a standard dinner plate. The fireplace never worked and was never fixed.
She lived in the 780 W. G building, right on the corner, about 100 ft away from the train tracks. That was easily the single-worst thing about this apartment: the trolley isn't that loud, but there is at least one freight train every night, usually around 11PM or 1AM. They not only blast their whistle due to the railroad crossing, but they actually shake the building. Good luck sleeping through that.
Maintenance is really lacking. People get drunk and spill things in the elevator and there are often beer bottles and trash lying around, which always makes you feel great about where you live. The elevator was chronically out-of-order, though they did appear to be finally replacing it when she moved out, so I will give them that. The buzz-in box at the front door was CONSTANTLY broken, I'd say 60% of the time, and the girlfriend would have to come down to let me in. She complained several times about it over a few months and it was never replaced.
She had already decided to move, but the kicker came when she got a letter informing her that rent would be going up $300 a month (to about $1900) if she chose to renew her lease. At the same time, she found equivalent apartments in the same building advertised on the internet for less than what she was paying. Lure in new tenants to replace the old ones you've screwed over and sucked dry; that seems to be the M.O. at Archstone.
If you absolutely, positively have to live downtown (which I don't really recommend), and you can afford it...you should still look elsewhere. This place is not worth it and we have never looked back. -
