Probably the reason why Denise Q. didn't find an appropriate gift for a Catholic baptism is that this store holds Orthodox items. Do some research and you'll learn there is a difference.

When I visited the store I was helped by a friendly young woman who spent a great deal of time helping me select an icon for my mother. In addition to the icons, there is jewelry, music, books, and other decorative items. Highly recommend stopping in.

I came to Archangel in search of a gift for a Catholic baptism. I found it hard to find anything in here that was appropriate for a baby/infant going through the right of baptism. Everything was wooden, or large and more rustic than pretty and nice and appropriate for an infant. It was just a different store than where I thought I would find the right present. It had a hippie vibe if anything. Which is fine and great for a Christian store, but maybe not for what I needed for a Catholic baptism gift.

The lady though was really helpful and nice and really tried to see if anything in the store would work.

    Unfortunately, nothing really worked.

    Was this review …?

I LOVE this place (note: I'm not Christian).  They have lots of cool Orthodox icons and whatnot.  And rad cards.  I once went in there and this really rad guy was working there.  If he wasn't gay he should have been.  He was really dashing in a classic kinda way (very Ramon Novarro-esque), but nervous and awkward and shy.  And really helpful... he searched through dozens of books to help me find info on certain saints.  I wasn't gonna buy anything but I did just because I would have felt bad if I didn't after he helped me so much (I didn't ask... he just kinda volunteered... but still).  They have really great childrensy books too in Greek... the pictures are great.  Pictures are so much more important than words, anyway.

I don't really have much to say, but the place really needed a review.  So here.

This place is small, but it has a nice collection of Orthodox books and lots of Jesus icons. And, the guy behind the counter was super friendly and helpful.

This place is essentially a little church. It is one of those little places that I stop in 3 or 4 times a week just to get the feeling of amazing wonder that the walls themselves exude. They also carry honey and beeswax candles that are wonderful, and many strange little religious and iconic objects as well as a complex orthodox library. I have made many friends here, and even though it is admittedly eccentric, this is the kind of eccentricity we need more of!

History

Established in 1998

Under inspiration of St. Herman of Alaska, in the 1960's, Archbishop John Maximovitch challenged two laypersons to translate into English ancient church texts then found in this country only in Russian.   These two aspired to make Eastern Orthodox Spirituality accessible to Americans by publishing 'The Orthodox Word' magazine and open a streetside bookstore.   They  later became monks and started the St. Herman of Alaska Monastery in Platina, near Red Bluff, CA, still translating many spiritual treasures into English.

Two locations later, the Archangel Bookstore is one of some 30  bookstore/ministries that showcase a multi-cultural mix of Orthodox tradition.  Such as Ethiopian, Armenian, Romanian, Serbian, Greek, Antioch-Syrian and Russian, etc.  We strive to be a hospitable welcome to the earliest and most traditional Christian Faith for the inquirer on the street.   Google 'Valaam Society of America' to find lists of other such stores throughout America & other countries.
