Review from Kes D.
This airport has improved a lot over the years. The new terminals are quite nice looking and the place no longer quite looks like a reject set for the TV show Wings. And thank god they stopped having those overwhelming cinnamon air fresheners in the bathrooms. Also, the baggage claim is finally indoors again.
There's a mediocre restaurant upstairs, The Silver Lining. There are also a few gift shops and a couple of rental car agencies.
The main downsides to this place are: A) United's monopoly and B) the Humboldt weather, causing delays frequently.
I've always found the staff to be quite friendly and helpful. It's amazing that they all seem to work several jobs at the airport-- the person you see checking in your bags may well 30 minutes later be directing the plane in a neon vest. Rarely terribly busy, so going through here is not super stressful.
It's gotten cuter, but it's still got the same old weather and corporate problems. Not a bad airport to be at. -

It is tough to rate these small airports. They are convenient in outlying areas, but by default they lack features. That is exactly the case with this airport. You will get in quickly, and on your way back to civiliaztion. It is very simple. You do not have to worry about lengthy TSA lines. Parking is right up front.

Yes I'm writing a review even though I didn't fly into this airport. Why do I deserve to rate it then you ask? Well... my work trip last week required me to spend one day in Hayward and then 3 nights in Mckinnleyville. Since flights from Oakland to Mckinnleyville/Arcata/Eureka are so sparse, the only flights available took a whole day because of all the backtracking. My only option was to drive 6 hours from Hayward to Mckinnleyville. Needless to say driving on the windy 101 at night with all that fog is no fun.
Work on that already. It's 2011. -

I spent so many same day flights here. Before my son started school, I used to pick him up from here every two months (Yea I know, that's one expensive flight) just when my divorce was fresh. I'd find myself in the Silver Lining dining area, and sulk for hours till I get to fly home. Oh look, a distraction (digress)...
This airport is clean, less congested and peaceful. It's a small airport that gets 3 arriving flights (and 3 departing) from Alaska per day (or at least everytime I flew which falls on a Friday or Saturday). There is only one security gate but it is so easy to go through. If you're a student, you can find peace here studying before a flight. The Silver Lining (diner/bar) serves as your source of provisions especially if you use the Holiday Inn Express down the road.
The pace of the lifestyle here makes living in northern California appealing to me even though I'm an HB-bum kind of guy. -

Nov. 2011: VERY limited flights. Just an FYI that Alaska/Horizon airline no longer has flights to Arcata-Eureka airport. So flights need to be booked via http://United.com.

I've spent a lot of time in this airport. In fact, my grandfather used to keep his airplane here, until he found a more easily accessible hangar a few towns over.
With a pilot in the family, we always flew privately - until the time my great grandmother needed extra leg room and became co-pilot. Which scared the beejeezus out of the rest of us: "Don't worry, Kids! My chest feels a little tight, but if I have a heart attack, Great Grandma will fly the plane!"
Terrific. Who doesn't want a 95-year old woman with dementia and cataracts flying your entire family over the Rockies? That incident scared my mom enough to convince her to pay a little extra so we could take commercial flights on summer vacations.
This airport (ACV) has grown in the last few years, now serving not only small United flights, but Horizon as well. Flight arrivals are spread out far enough that my parents can hear my plane fly over their back deck and hop in the car to come down and get me from the field.
Minus 1 star for not having a baggage claim area and throwing my luggage into a pop-up tent next to the parking lot out front. -

I have notoriously bad luck at airports (ask me to tell you the BNA airport story someday) and because of this coupled with increased airport security, I have had to stop holding up inappropriate signs for my mother while waiting for her at airports when she comes to visit me. This is sad, because that is usually how we start off our trips. She has pictures of me at airports across the country holding signs for her such as "Welcome Miss December 1972" and if anyone understands my simpleton humor, it's my mom. Mainly because I think that I received my low-IQ from a mix of bad genetics and all the joints she was likely smoking while pregnant with me. Explains a lot, doesn't it?
While living in Eureka, I decided to make an arrest worthy sign, sure to embarrass her, or at least help her to realize I had not matured in any way in my time away from her. At first, no one even batted an eye when I held it up. She ran toward me, leaving her carry-on somewhere near the plane, and attempted to hug me through the fence, only to run back and get her purse, which she had simply thrown on the ground mid-run. Again, the low-IQ thing, it's genetic. I should have taken the sign down after she saw it, but it was just TOO good, so I left it up. Then I saw one of the surgeons at the hospital I was working at look at it, then at me, then at my frog pajamas and Red Sox tank top (minus the bra) and he bolted. I later couldn't figure out why he stopped consulting me...
Regardless, any airport where I can meet my mom in style, with an inappropriate sign, and without being hassled by any type of security, is a great place in my book. It is served by only 3 airlines (Delta, Horizon, and United) but provides service to several large cities (Salt Lake City, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Sacramento and Los Angeles) as well as several smaller cities (Redding and Crescent City). It's 20 miles north of Eureka, and is the only airport serving Humboldt, Del Norte, and Mendocino Counties. You don't have to arrive two hours earlier like larger airports, and you don't have to wait for 20 minutes at baggage claim either. I don't think there is a baggage claim at all... -

Arcata Airport! Worst location for an airport ever!! Built during World War II for practicing landing in the fog! Today it's a headache for me!
Although the security lines, customer service, and getting in/out of the airport is 5 stars!
Damn you mother nature!! -

This is why you want to grow up in a small community or raise your family in a small community. My mom used a large styrofoam ice chest to house about 30-40 lbs. of marinated Korean barbecue. The Horizon Airlines representative told us that she could not allow us to check in the package because of the styrofoam. This really put a damper in our plans and our mood. The helpful woman told us to go to the recycle bin located outside of the small terminal and use the cardboard boxes to cover up the sytrofoam ice chest! When I could not find the recycle bin, she walked me over and gave me and my dad a pair of scissors and packaging tape! We got it done and now our freezers are full!
The second incident. My wife and I decided to listen to my mother. Uh oh...I know. My mom told us to save money by carrying on another piece of luggage. Well, we tried until my wife recalled that this carry on contained all her make up, which would not qualify as an exception to that 3.0 oz rule! Needless to say we panicked. Our options were: leave it behind for my mom to mail it to us or check in the bag as originally planned. My wife walked over to the Horizon Airlines desk and the representative found one of our checked baggages and had my wife stuff her make up in that bag....of course her make up was inspected before doing so. I told my wife that this could only happen in my home town. I am not saying that nice, genuine people cannot be found in larger communities. It is just that small town people can be this good and helpful, that a small airport with only one baggage carousel can provide great customer service, and that our 'luck' would not be possible without these factors.
