I love Arcata! They are totally on the right track. It was great to hop on a bike and just go.. I used them a lot and found it to be a great thing to have. Arcata is awesome!

Like Amy M. said, this is a great program. You basically get a used bike that is in working condition for $20, or for free if you decide to return the bike and get your deposit back. The bikes here may not be perfect, but this program is awesome considering you can get working transportation (that is able to get you all around Arcata) and come back to work on your bike at any time, all for a $20 deposit! I picked up my bike from them when I was a freshman at HSU and used it every day up until I saved up some cash and bought a new one, many months later... A very helpful service.
Their hours of operation are pretty random, and lately they've only been open on the weekends. -

Like all the other reviews have already said, this is a great system and is a life-saver for poor college students living in Arcata! HOWEVER- make sure to e-mail them to find out where the place is first because otherwise it could possibly be difficult to find where they are located as they have moved from their old building. Other than that, the volunteers are super nice, helpful, and knowledgeable about the bikes. They also sell bikes for cheap (around 80 bucks) if you want to own instead of rent. The guy who helped me even put on a free seat of my choosing from their spare bike seats because the one on the bike was old and uncomfortable.

Oh how I wish this program was in existence while I was living in Arcata! It is as easy as picking out a bicycle, leaving a deposit, and pedaling away for up to six months!

Theoretically, the Bike Library system is awesome and I think it's great how it encourages people to bike around town. However, because it relies on donations only, you might end up with a pretty crappy bike. I got a bike on Saturday, and by the following Friday I already had 3 (yes, THREE) flat tires that I paid to fix. I had to buy brand new tires, which ended up costing over $40 with labor and all. I got so fed up with the piece of crap that I went to Target and bought myself a shiny new bike that works great. I didn't want to invest any more $$ in that junky old bike. I'm sure some people make out better with their Library bikes, but I did not have the best experience with it!
