Four stars for the artichoke bread: soft, fluffy, fresh out of the oven. We got one loaf to eat with lunch and picked up another loaf to take home. Uh, we also got some English muffins that I just remembered are still hanging out in our car. Be right back.

    ...

The little picnic area behind the store is what pushes this place into 5-star territory. There are some tables with umbrellas set up and if you look over the white fence you'll see a nice little creek. Seems to be a really popular biker (bicycle, not motorcycle) destination.

The artichoke bread really is pretty awesome.

But don't miss out on the hot sandwiches and the savory spreads. These are not *fine food* of the quality you'd find in the Gourmet Ghetto or the Mission, but pretty darn good.

Pick up some tasties and go picnic by a stream under the redwoods in Butano State Park nearby. Sooo pretty.

Cue "The Good, The Bad, The Ugly" theme song, grab your hat and slap on a pair of chaps!

This place is awesome!  I feel like every once rural area has expanded and commercialized, but Pescadero has kept its quaint little charm.

Off the beaten track  is the town of Pescadero.  Small farms, cheese farms, and agriculture run this place.

If you travel further inland you can find Harley Farm:

    http://www.yelp.com/bi...

They have a great selection of fresh cheeses artfully designed.

    Back to the Grocer...

Obviously known for their Artichoke Bread, I had to buy a loaf.  Being my first time there I just purchased the fully baked and ready to eat version.  With a cup of Duarte's half Artichoke soup half green chillies soup I dipped away and enjoyed my first taste of the infamous duo.

    Duarte's Tavern:

    http://www.yelp.com/bi...

Hidden Gem a little further down...

Behind the Grocer past the wall of sunflowers there is a creek and a few benches.  On a nice day this spot is money!  The sound of the creek, the nice hot sun, and being surrounded by wildlife and nature.  It's nice to slow things down from time to time.  Hit that reset button.  =)

    Enjoy~!

Quaint little deli smack dab in the middle of this one horse town. They even have a garden plot next to the store! As this area was known for its artichokes, of course I had to try out their garlic artichoke bread, around $5 for a round loaf. They also do a mean artichoke spread. In fact, I made a quick meal of it while checking out the locals (elephant seals).

Tell ya what. For a small town like Pescadero, they sure know how to bake bread! Stopped by here yesterday and I thought a robbery was in progress. The sheriff was there, the police AND the highway patrol were all  hanging out in front of this spot. Strolling in, I commented, "Sure is a lotta law enforcement for a small town!". They were all there for the bread. In fact one advised to "buy two, one for the drive home."

Actually, I had a thought to buy an extra loaf in case I get pulled over! I'm a horrible flirt. ha!

I am in love with this grocery market. I usually buy a block of Swiss cheese, a deli sandwich, Arcangeli garlic salsa with chips, and a bottle of wine.
It's amazing food at good prices.
It's a bit of a drive for me seeing as I am approx. 30 minutes away, but all is great since it's a nice, scenic route.
    This is my shop!!!

This is a great shop to stop by if you're near. They have a deli in the back and a bunch of snacks. I was at a nearby beach and was going to stop by a restaurant here, but it was closed for the day. We walked up a bit more and one of my friends had bought their artichoke loafs before so I wanted to grab one too. It was still warm when I purchased it so i couldn't help myself but to grab a bite. Has a nice crunchy crust and soft pillowy inside. Great bread and smelled really good.
I saw some fresh pies as well, but didn't get a chance to try one of those. Will have to stop by again to see what else I can get!

Rating it 4 stars based on everyone else's opinion of their artichoke loaf. We purchased the half-baked artichoke and garlic loaf bread and baked it the next day, and I made my own herbed garlic butter to spread on top of the bread. There are huge pieces of artichoke in the bread, but they mostly sank to the bottom and were dispersed unevenly, so not everyone will get a piece of artichoke. However, out of the 9 people who tried it, they all raved about how delicious it was! Personally, I didn't think it was that delicious, but I guess I'm the odd one out in this case. The bread was soft and pillowly though. Next time, I'm going to buy their fully baked loaf with the butter already on top. They also sell pies here, but ran out of their ollallieberry!! I guess I'll have to come back..

Artichoke lovers, this is a must try for you!

FIVE STARS FOR THE FRESH BREAD!!!

Went to Half Moon Bay for the afternoon, on the way to dinner, we stopped at Pescadero beach where we approached a couple who were sitting at a picnic table with a great looking, huge, puffy, rounded, crispy looking bread. I asked them where they got it and they said the grocery store in the town (Pescadero).

Bought a fresh Artichoke loaf and it was A M A Z I N G - fresh & delicious. I don;t even eat artichokes!! I cant wait to go back to try their fresh garlic & sourdough bread!

If you are a bread lover and you travel on route 1 going to or from Half Moon Bay & Santa Cruz, GET A LOAF of this bread!!

Jesus Chris - the artichoke bread is SO good.

We started a bike ride in Redwood city and made our way over Old La Honda and La Tunitas to get to Arcangeli. Perfect place to stop for artichoke bread. It is very bike friendly and you'll likely see dozens of other cyclists stopped here. I would drive from SF to Pescadero just to have this bread. So good.

    Aghhhh the brrrrreeeeaaaaddddd.

Every time I come to Pescadero (which happens more often than I might expect), my crew stops at Arcangeli to stock up on fresh warm gooey amazing home-baked artichoke bread, delicious fancy and/or local cheese, wine and beer from an impressive collection, and any other snacks that strike our fancy to munch on at our hotel or at our campsite or on our car ride home.

I may have to head up there again soon. . .

Oh my goodness - they aren't lying --  the bread is wonderful!  I don't know if we were just plain lucky but the loaves we bought were warm! nom nom nom

There were so many interesting items in this store. Dipping oils, salsas, pies, breads.  Very clean.  If you want to put together an impromptu picnic - this would be a great place to grab items!

We went to the back of the store and ate bread, cheese & fruit!  Yummy

Second time here and since the last time, everyone seemed to have discovered the store and the amazing fresh bread hence the lack of parking.  Last time we bought the half baked ones to finish up at home but this time, the fully baked ones were so warm that it was calling to us.  Within a matter of 10 minutes, both baskets of the garlic artichoke bread was empty but luckily they came out with fresh ones shortly after so warm that we couldn't resist grabbing a knife and digging right into it.  They have focaccia, other baked goods, jams, local cheeses, and artichokes as well but the star is the fresh bread!

Everyone goes down the street for pizza at the country store, but all I wanted was some bread to snack on before heading to Ano Nuevo.  Once you step near the door, you can smell the freshly baked bread, which lures you in.

They do have a deli counter in the back with sandwiches, etc, but I couldn't make it past the bread in the front.  They have homemade pies, foccaccia, and parbaked breads to take home, but then they unloaded a fresh out of the oven batch of the herb + garlic + artichoke rounds.  The bread was crisped outside, topped with savory garlic bits, with the softest, chewy, baked-just-right inside, then loaded with artichoke hearts throughout the entire bottom of the loaf.  I've never had any loaf of bread hit the spot like that.

In addition to regular grocery items, they do also have wine in the fridge, so wine + deli meat + fresh baked bread = best food ever while you're out along the coast.

From childhood to early adulthood, I attended and worked at the fabulous YMCA Camp Loma Ma in the nearby town of, you guessed it, Loma Mar, just a breath away from Pescadero. I remember countless breaks from work where myself and 1 or 2 other counselors would race to get to the store and back to grab some artichoke garlic bread, and if there was a miracle, some half and half soup (half artichoke/half clam chowder) from Duarte's.

I literally grew up on this bread and was AH-MAZED to find out that they ship the bread now. I awoke to 4 loaves delivered straight to my doorstep. I immediately popped one in to bake and froze the other three. 2 slices and I was full.

Man oh man, do I LOVE this bread.

After deciding to visit the small coastal town of Pescadero, I discovered that there were only three local lunch options: a taqueria at a gas station, bar food, or a grocery store. None were exactly what I was looking for, but the choice still seemed obvious: Arcangeli Grocery Co it was!

We picked up some artichoke garlic herb bread, which was still warm from the oven. Each loaf contains the equivalent of 2-4 small-to-midsized artichoke hearts, which, in my mind, was already a good sign. When I finally took my first bite, the heaven's suddenly parted, the sun came out, and I could swear I heard a harp playing throughout the duration of my meal. It was AMAZING.

To get the complete experience, pair this ambrosial loaf with some Harley Farms goat cheese and a couple dipping spreads/oils, then take your bounty outside and indulge yourself at one of their picnic tables.

The lone downside? Their only bathroom option is a Port A Potty that sits outside in the sun all day. So close to perfection, Arcangeli, so close!

Everybody should make it here once. It's in a tiny town by the coast, which means they have great great great sourdough. I love their breads, their preserves, their jams, olives, local produce....everything is beautiful, delicious and of high quality. A very fun trip or stop during your travels on the CA coast. When I go there I feel like I get an idea of what it might have felt like to shop in a small town store a century ago. Plus they are great people- I think the son (I think he's the son, grandson... I don't know I talked to him once) is super sweet, and super cute! Gosh if it isn't hard to not fall for him. :-) Don't go anywhere Norm's- I love coming here even though I don't get here as often as i like. ***BUT THEY DO HAVE MAIL ORDER*** You can get their bread mailed to you and you finish it in the oven at home.

this is really off the beaten path..  what gems people find by taking the backroads.

we were hanging out in half moon bay.  my parents remembered a bread that was the best ever.  everyone who has ever tried it concurs and brings others there.

    three words:
    GARLIC ARTICHOKE BREAD

pescadero is a tiny town.  there are two churches, one school, and about 10 or so shops in the area.  one of those happen to be Arcangeli!!!  =)

we waited for the next batch of bread to come out of the oven.  the aroma of fresh, warm bread arrived.  we bought one garlic artichoke bread.  grabbed a bunch of napkins.  sat outside enjoying the beautiful blue sky.  the four of us finished the huge bread baked with real pieces of artichoke.  Mmm...

they even sell partially baked bread.  so if you want to buy it for someone, i recommend the partially baked bread.  directions say to preheat the oven to 400F for 15 minutes. =)

they also have preserves, pies, other bread, cheeses, meats, etc.
perfect place for all your picnic needs.  ENJOY!!!

    NOTE:
it's good but my mom said that they used to put MORE artichoke.  nowadays they skimp on it...but it's still tasty.

Love the artichoke bread!  This was my second time coming here and I couldn't wait to get my hands on one of those warm artichoke breads!  We got here at around 2pm and thought maybe they would be sold out of bread or we'd have to purchase an old one, but I guess they bake them throughout the day because it was fresh out of the oven!  We bought some cheese and deli meat at the store and had a little picnic in the back of the store where they had some picnic tables.  This place is a must if you're driving by.  Oh yea, be sure to pick up some fresh artichokes too!

I came here with my family on our 'Day In Pescadero' trip and I must say that if you're in or around Pescadero that this a must on your list of places to visit.

Arcangeli has a sandwich section in the back where you can order one of their creations or order the way you like it.  I ordered the godfather sandwich which was on a grilled artichoke focaccia bread and consisted of several cured meats like salami and had pepperocini, lettuce and onions.  It was one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time.  There's also a nice picnic area by the creek located in the back for you to enjoy their food.

Other things I liked about this place:
    - Declicious Garlic Herb and Artichoke Bread that is constantly being taken out fresh!
    - Sell their own marinades and sauces.  I bought tuscan lemon herb marinade.  It's already with the chicken in the fridge and will be grilled on the weber tonight!
    - Grea selection of gourmet food items, pasta sauces, salsas, California Wine, cheese

Overall, this truly is an amazing deli.  The smell inside alone tempts you to buy a sandwich.  Employees are friendly.   Food and decor is great.

Locally grown fresh ingredients + Italian family receipe handed down the generations + unique local flavor = oooooooooooh yeah baby.

Got here at around 11:30 am and there were fresh loaves still piping hot!

You can blow a mini fortune eating a lunch at Duarte's.

Or you can treat yoself to a gourmet picnic by getting stuff from this market, then mosey over around to the back, and there are several picnic tables to enjoy your nosh.

Oh yeah, do not forget to buy some cheese, or spread to go with the bomb ass bread. They also carry Harley Farms goat cheese (from up the street around the bend), but my fave is the Pesto Artichoke spread, quite  over the top (as it is creamy rich and flavorful, artichoke on artichoke), and a container alone costs about the same as the bread. But it is still a good picnic lunch.

WOW! The garlic artichoke bread is incredible! Sooooo fresh and soft. The deli guy in the back of the shop uses local, quality ingredients. Nothing resembling a grocery store at all.
I brought my staff out to Harley Farms for an outing, and ended our trip with Arcangeli's Deli. The Godfather sandwich is out of this world! It's a charcuterie in a sandwich!
I took home two miniature ollalaberry pies. OMG!!!!!! Everything tastes so distinctly delicious when fresh.

If you go for a romantic drive along the coast, it's the perfect little hidden place to stop in, grab a hot fresh loaf of bread and a bottle of wine, then find a out of the way spot on the beach. They sell so much good stuff - own Arcangeli jams, marinades, pasta sauce, tons of varieties of breads (the garlic and artichoke foccasia is so good, I am glad I got 2 to freeze), cheese from Harley farms (local, Pescadero).

The people are super nice and helpful, and the prices are pretty average for artisanal foods.

I LOVE yelp!  I had never been to Pescadero and wanted to stop here for lunch on a drive down highway 1, thanks to a quick consult on yelp, I headed here.

    Arcangeli's was a real find!!!
    The deli sandwiches are amazing!
I ordered the chicken club on their homemade foccacia and it was so delicious.  My guests each ordered the chicken pesto sandwiches with roasted red peppers and they enjoyed them also.  Arcangeli's makes them fresh to order at the deli counter, you can even build your own sandwich as well.

The best part about this little grocery store is that they make so many things homemade.  They have a huge selection of sauces and jams.
I took home an artichoke garlic loaf and the whole car smelled heavenly.

The other great thing about this spot is the outdoor picnic area in the back, which is right next to a creek and really a peaceful spot to enjoy your delicious sandwich.  The next time I'm driving Highway 1, I will for sure be stopping here for another tasty sandwich.

UUUhhhhhhhh....yes folks, that moan signifies an extremely full belly and an intense sound of love.  Love of what?  Plain and simple - Arcangeli's Artichoke Bread!!!!  This place is a highlight and dare I say, a destination of any coastal trip.

Here are some of my go-to tips for this fine establishment:
    1)  Sandwiches are delish, fresh, and BIG, so if you're going with friends, start with one sammy and share (especially if you get a loaf of artichoke bread too)
    2)  Throw yer diet out the window before heading in.  When I was there a few weeks ago, I TRIED to have willpower.  But my love of carbs combined with that herby, doughy, chokey amazingness was too much to fight.  Yeah, so I was bad.  But it was WELL worth it!
    3)  Give up on trying to prounounce the name of their special berry jam.  Olialaberry?  Olliaberry?  Ollyoxenberry?  Even with the pronunciation guides on the product descriptions in the aisles....I elect to keep the mystery alive.  You should too.

So come here.  Eat bread.  Be happy.

If you're ever in the Pescadero area, be sure to stop by this market! They have a great selection of bread and pastries along with many great local items.

Before heading over to Harley Farms, we stopped in for some coffee. My colleagues stocked up on their famous artichoke bread, fresh artichokes, and their speciality jams and honey. I would've gotten some too, but I was car-less, had plans later in the city, and didn't want to carry things with me.

After the farm, we head back over to pick up our sandwich order. Initially we planned to have lunch on the beach but it was windy. So we took over the picnic area at the back of the store instead. The tables have umbrellas and there was a little garden. It was a great private spot.

The sandwiches were hefty! Most of us only ate half. The chicken pesto I got was so tasty. Fresh focaccia bread with warm chicken. Yum! Our sandwiches also came with huge chocolate chip cookies. It was the size of my face, I kid you not. So chewy and good! Yum!

I don't do heroin or coke, but I'll bet that they are really good. They must be, right? Why else would casual users and outright addicts damage their lives, ruin their close relationships, waste their money, and skirt the bounds of criminality in order to get high? Surely they must have some sort of a pleasurable effect, as most psychoactive substances tend to do in the short term. It's the longer-term letdowns and painful withdrawals, not to mention the social costs, that cause such pain for those among us who, despite all the known risks, still choose to use.

The other reason why I think that cocaine and heroin must have something going for them is because they once were wholesome, good, and life-affirming. They are the end results of a highly manipulative production, distribution, and sales chain that transforms into a profitable and deadly commodity living plants that were - originally - organic, sustainable, and green. Coca leaves. And poppies. For many generations, local communities in South America used coca leaves in moderation to endure long days and nights where energy and alertness were needed. And peoples throughout Europe, Asia, and the Middle long used poppy seeds, infusions, and pastes to ease pain, de-stress, and help overcome life's many traumas and tragedies.

So, while I am no advocate of legalizing the processed end products, which are controlled by organized criminal networks and major drug companies (using other names, like morphine or oxycontin), I might consider the value of letting local people grow and use the organic leaves and seeds that have evolved alongside human societies in the same way that apples, potatoes, rice, or tulips have.

So .... what's the connection here to Arcangeli's, a popular family-owned grocery and fine foods store on Pescadero's Main Street? They sell things out back that aren't on the menu? No, that's not it at all. It's what they DO sell that I want to talk about.

Arcangeli's sells many items, all quite appealing, but there are a few things that are addictively good and thus the foodie equivalents of crack and smack:

    Olallieberry jam
    Artichoke and garlic herb bread

Both products are excellent. That's not the point. They are so tasty in part because of how they are processed. In the case of the berries, they are steeped in cane sugar and pectin to produce a dark blue and purple goo you could put in an IV drip and inject straight into your bloodstream. In the case of the artichokes, they are wrapped up in a highly refined, fiberless flour mixed with dough enhancements and turned into a soft and chewy pillow of ethereal white bread goodness.  You could almost inhale the stuff, it's so good when piping hot from the oven.

Getting the picture yet? These products are amped-up and flavor-bammed to the point where you go into sensory overload when consuming them and often can't stop until it is too late and you are stuffed. So as much as I love them, I feel guilty about overindulging and I crash afterward when the sugar and carb highs end.

But ... both of these (minimally) processed foods contain substances - artichokes and olallieberries - that are utterly local, can be grown organically, and are brimming with antioxidants, flavanoids, and all sorts of yumminess. But they are truly at their best when eaten fresh and without any distracting sugar, salts, and bleached flour carbs to get in the way.

Like the coca leaves and the poppy seeds, the best way to enjoy artichokes and olallieberries is when they are just picked and prepared with a light hand. And you can get amazing organic varieties harvested by union-friendly labor in and around Pescadero at places like Blue House Farm and Swanton Coastways Ranch.

There is nothing more fragrant than the aromas of baby artichoke halves lightly tossed in lemon juice, a dash of salt, and splash of olive oil after being boiled gently for 20-25 minutes. And eating fresh, chilled olallieberries sans anything, or mixed with granola or in a fruit salad or juiced into a smoothie, is vastly better than the jammed-up version.

So, please come to Arcangeli's and stock up on bread and jam. We do sometimes! But don't forget in the process to get the fresh stuff too. They even sell it here, if you bother to ask.

Throwback to running back circa 2004, 2005, 2006.

If you're in Pescadero you go here to try the bread! I'm glad to see their reviews are still high because my oh my their bread is good. My peeps and I used to go to running camp here (where we ran like 100 miles in a week!) and then at the end would CARBO-LOAD on these babies, one loaf a pop. ;)

The memories! I'm so glad I found the name again on yelp. :)

    Next to try...the apple turnovers.

The coast is known for artichokes, pumpkins, strawberries, and brussel sprouts depending on the season so you can find local fresh produce here.

We especially love their baked goods including their bread loaves.

Our favorite is the artichoke garlic herb loaf.  They're always bringing out fresh baked loaves from the kitchen. Buy several loaves, you won't regret it.  You just feel like ripping pieces of bread to eat as you're walking.

You can also buy partially baked loaves.  Freeze the loaves when you get home, and bake them later.

During crab season we'll buy our crabs off the boat at Pillar Point, then drive down to Pescadero just to make a stop here for the bread.  It's that good.

Note:  bring a resuable shopping bag as you'll be asked "paper or plastic?"  Coming from the City, we were taken back in time as plastic is banned now.

Super cute little deli/market with all sorts of jarred delicacies, veggies, etc. We stopped in to get some coffee and a pastry. We got a cinnamon bun that was to die for! We wanted to get some of the SUPER fresh, so fresh it was still piping hot, artichoke bread but we passed because we didn't think that we could finish it on our trip. We SOOO wished we had some of that bread later on. We talked to several people along our trip who gushed over how great the artichoke bread was...Next time!

Kids and I stopped here today before picking berries.

I say YAY for artichoke herb bread!!!!

Kids say YAY for garlic herb sourdough bread!!!

It was our first time, we will be back.  Only downfall (and a minor one), was that they were fairly busy, and only had one register open.  Worth the wait though.

Oh, we got some cinnamon english muffins that we are having in the morning, I'll have to update after we've eaten them:)
