This place is right around the corner from my office. I think I ate lunch there for about 9 solid days when I had a cold a few weeks ago--I like their homemade soups, especially the potato leek. Also really like their panini style grilled PBJ. Daily specials on their website which is useful.

Little iffy on the service. I actually started to feel embarassed to be eating there so often. Like I was crashing a party. I got the feeling that one of the side-swept bang hipster guys working there thought I had a crush on him. I just wanted the soup!

Update 9.2.05: I saw a really fantastic show put on by David Potes of Hamburger Eyes. Awesome drawings and paintings and hey, free sangria at the opening! So, bumped up the rating a star from the last time I was in there.

Located in no-man's land between the rough part of the Mission and Potrero hill, Arc cafe was a surprise find for me. It's this huge warehouse coffee shop with mediocre art all over the walls of the upper level. This place has definite potential with it's size and good coffee, but it has an uphill battle with the location. I'll bump up my review a star if they hold a cool event or try one of their sammies...

The food here is good enough. It's not the kind of place I make a lunch destination out of. The names of the salads and sandwiches are fun, especially if you are a culture nerd.
It is a relaxing positive-feeling place, with free internet access, and they make pretty good espresso drinks. The names of the sandwiches and salads are fun if you are a culture nerd.
They have a space for live performances, which I know nothing about.
When it's nice there are always people sitting out on the fenced-in courtyard under umbrellas chatting away and drinking coffee. I always want to be those people, but I only have a half hour for lunch.

Current staff is awesome. After going in once, now I get a special "hey Spratt" every time I walk in the door. Yessss. The cream of mushroom soup (today's special) was lovely - homemade, flavorful mushrooms pured with barely a hint of any "creamy" component. Beats Campbell's(tm) in a can any day. Plus, they let me bring in my own stuff in a tupperware (i have a killer brussels sprouts recipe, trust me) and just order some tea to go with, with nary an eyelash batted.

Oh, CASH ONLY. Which I don't usually mind, except when I don't have any more cash except for BART fare, and don't know where the nearest ATM is, and since I'm not good at tricks (the magic kind), I can't come up with enough spare change. I'm so unhip.

I was kicked out of here the last time; I had no idea they were closing.  There is plenty of seating area, with an upper floor; the front patio area is fenced in and looks like a good place to chill on a sunny day.  There were two staff when I was there, and I found one to be more friendly than the other.

Next time you're in the area, walk past that Starbucks on the corner and grab your joe @ Arc instead (Florida & Mariposa - don't get lost).

Freshly prepared food with excellent ingredients, wireless, the Onion, lots of room to hang out, local artists work for sale on the walls, outdoor seating when it's warm...  nice combination for a local cafe.  Our office is one block away and I have been 30 times at least.  The Arc's real strength is excellent sandwiches and salads with again, the best ingredients.  For an extra 75 cents/serving for lunch versus Subway or some random bad cafe, the Arc is happening, and a worthy 4 stars as a lunch spot.

My only complaint is that the Arc once had a woman with a huge tatoo "Off with Her Head" around her neck, with seemingly bolts in her head, and 'interesting' hair and she left.  We miss her.

Hard to find warehouse/cafe on Mariposa and Florida in the NE Mission with very spartan interior, simple menu, good coffee and sometimes live music. Outdoor patio seating. Friendly, laid-back service. Art on the walls and lots of open space (perhaps a bit too spartan). Good music. I understand it is for sale, so I don't know what the future holds, but I hope it stays around and develops. They may need to add a few more bright, shiny things to draw people in and make them stay, but otherwise it is a very cool place to sit and read, drink coffee or chill with friends. They serve beer and wine too although I'm not sure when. The upstairs bar reminds one of hanging out at someone's loft apartment bar, to be honest.

    Good place to check out.

This place has good coffee and is almost never crowded.  The bagels are also pretty good.

The service can be hit or miss.  One guys was making me a sandwich and kept touching his hair to keep it out of his eye.  That was kind of gross.

I go to the ARC for a few reason. I love the ambience. They have amazing breaksfast bagels. Get the ones with cream cheese and everything on it! They brew their tea from real tea leaves! It's not pre-packaged. I recommend the white tea.

Cool staff, interesting, industrial feel. The sandwiches give me bliss, as does their fine selection of old Fortean Times editions. Bliss, I tell you.

I really like this place and their brocoli soup is awesome.  The outside seating is excellent and laid back and the service is wonderful.  Too bad they don't have wifi though.

Arc is right around the corner from my work, hidden in the neighborhood. The staff is always nice, the lines never seem to be long. The sandwiches are good and I like that they make homemade soup, I think. Kind of pricey, but what isn't?

The staff is very nice and the sandwiches are tasty.  The coffee is much stronger than the Buckstar's stuff, which never wakes me up, so I know what to get if I need a pick-me-up. But for Potrero Hill, a neighborhood where I regularly have to step over human waste and then over the napkin used to wipe that waste off a human backside, $8 for a sandwich is way overpriced.  Also, last I was there there was no hours sign hung out and I would sometimes get a surprise in the way of "CLOSED".

I've never hung out here - run in, grab a coffee and go. but - coffee's good, music is good, staff  is good. it's all around a decent place to grab coffee on the way in to work.

I've totally changed my mind about this place.  they can't seem to keep staff for more than a few months, I finally got sick of their overly strong coffee (did I just say that?) and their menu is getting stale, overpriced and underproportioned.  Oh well - back to atlas.

If you live in the Inner Mission area near 17th and Bryant/Harrison you know there has not been an independent coffee shop ioen in the area since Star-uck's took over Circadia at Mariposa and Bryant several years ago. Add to that the fact that my favorite brewing company in the world, Potrero Brewing Company at Mariposa and Florida, closed in 2002 and was replaced by "Whisper" left my neighborhood in dire need of a "hang out" place within walking distance to grab a cup of tea, quick bite, etc.   Arc Cafe opened a few weeks ago and is awesome..granted they are only open now in the mornings but should be opening soon for lunch through dinner time. The staff is friendly and you get that close-knit, neighborhood vibe. Currently they have a few artists' work displayed and looks like there will be plans to have monthly installations and maybe even DJ's??  I don't drink coffee but my husband says theirs is great.   Come out and visit...and support your local neighborhood coffee shop.
