You can't go wrong with Arby's and their traditional roast beef sandwich with horsey and Arby sauce with curly fries. I walked in for the first time in many years and was pleasantly surprised by the menu choices now. You can get the classic or two other versions with a lot more meat of the roast beef. They also expanded their menu with other items and still have the deli fresh sandwiches. This particular Arby is conveniently located near the mall but is difficult to get to from the north bound street. You have to make a U turn at a very busy intersection.

Arby's, much like the music of Bjork, the art of Jeff Koons, or the politics of George W. Bush, is a polarizing thing. There is little room for indifference or equivocation: either you cherish it or you despise it. I am firmly ensconced in the former camp. I don't care how many jokes are made on The Simpsons at its expense, you can't make me dislike Arby's.

I am giving a five-star review here, for a variety of reasons: curly fries are the default option; Arby's is the first major fast-food restaurant chain to eliminate trans-fats from their menu; and while one does not come here expecting Chez Panisse-esque freshness, the myth/urban-legend that their meat comes from a paste has been thoroughly debunked - the food is good enough for what it is.

I almost always order the #3 Combo, which is a large roast beef sandwich (the artist formerly known as Big Montana), a medium order of curly fries, and a medium drink. There are enough other options on the menu (oven-toasted sub sandwiches, potato wedges, salads, etc.) that one could come here every day for weeks and never eat the same thing twice, but the roast beef sandwiches are still the Arby's raison d'etre. Let's face it, when given the option of coating sumptuous, glistening meat folds with horsey goo, what man can say no?

Everywhere else I've ever lived I wouldn't even think about reviewing Arby's.  There are so many of them up in the Northwest that it's like reviewing a McDonald's.  But in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, there are all of three locations, this one, one in Santa Maria and another in Thousand Oaks.  They are such a rarity on the Central Coast that I have talked to quite a few people that have never been to an Arby's. What a shame.

So for you uninitiated few, Arby's primarily serves thinly sliced roast beef sandwiches that taste like nothing anywhere else.  I've never had a roast beef sandwich that had the same flavor, whether that's good or bad is debatable.  Personally it's good to me, I can look past the oddity of a flavor that's not replicable and doesn't seem natural.  But I can understand why it would weird other people out.

They also serve a selection of other items, like turkey and chicken sandwiches, salads and appetizers. But who are we kidding, if you are making a pilgrimage to the Ventura Arby's, like one of my Santa Barbaran friends occasionally does, you are there for the roast beef, more than likely a Beef and Cheddar loaded with Arby and Horsey Sauce, and seasoned curly fries, not a friggin' salad.

Two great things about the Ventura location in particular:  It features the old school neon Arby's sign and it's clientele are some of the area's most skeezy characters.  You never know what goofball you might run into there.

Jalapeno Poppers dipped in BRONCO BERRY SAUCE where have you been all my life? I just tried this and it was so good, I immediately read the ingredients on the Bronco Berry container and while the sauce does not appear to contain any Bronco Berries I'm convinced it's still good for you.

It's sad this is the only place where you can get your Arby's fill around Oxnard, all the way in Ventura!!! It's a far drive away. I usually only stop by here if i go to Pac View Mall. The sandwiches are your standard Arby's sandwiches everywhere, pretty good roast beef sandwiches. They hook it up with packages of horsey sauce here. Very nice people. Only 4 stars because of location (far proximity to Oxnard) and the prices! There's no for 4 for $5 roast beef sandwiches anymore, quite disappointing!

If you've been to one Arby's, you've been to all of em. In that case, you've enjoyed decent sandwiches begging to be smothered with amazing sauce that is probably laced with heroin. This particular location was staffed by the nicest, most outgoing staff I've had the pleasure of being served by. There was an older gentleman that seemed to have only one responsibility-- to offer to take patron's trash in the friendliest manner possible. That's pretty rare for a fast food joint, but I'm down with what they're trying to accomplish. Plus, big cowboy hat sign out front. Winner.

Why is this place getting good reviews? It's like giving McDonald's a five-star rating. The only reason to do so is because you have some childhood or out-of-state love for this particular brand of greasy fast food.
