I really love this place. It's spacious, lots of seating, the employees are nice, and the food is delicious.
Bicycle coffee is very strong and robust in flavor. They only serve pour-over/drip and french press. They do not make espresso drinks, but no biggie.

They're cash only-- which, is the only down side.

Let's start with the good: lots of seating, good natural lighting, free (password protected) wi-fi, relatively nice staff and what looked like pretty delicious food.

Then... there's the not so great: it opens at 9 am (what kind of cafe opens at 9?!), pricey, cash only, and bad coffee. I don't think I've had French pressed coffee that tasteless and watery since......ever.

Funky hipster ambiance, free wifi, friendly baristas, and lots of cozy spaces to camp out in, Arbor is an ideal place to get your work on but still feel like you're having fun. I like the openness of the space and the mix of large group tables, small "coffee date" tables, couches, and chairs - the environment is well suited to whatever kind of project you might be hammering away on. And, with a variety of beers on tap, don't forget to reward yourself for your labors.

Pour over coffee seems to be the style in favor here, although as an espresso drinker, I generally prefer something more lethal. For me, their French Press Pot does the trick.

As others mentioned, the food selection here is a little limited, but there are plenty of meal options further down the block when I need a lunch break.

i like this place:  lots of seats, good food, friendly staff.  BUT why don't they have more outlets for people to plug in their laptops?!  i don't go to coffee shops that often to work - but this was a major issue for me.  luckily my battery was fully charged when i got there.  although i would have stayed longer, if i could.  overall, it's a cool spot to hang until your battery wears out..

    They have good coffee.

Finally a good cup with nothing fancy...just freshly brewed, good aroma, not too acidic. And served in an unpretentious place with Wi-fi, vintage furniture and high ceilings. Also lots of BIG communal tables, good for meetings and study groups. Great ambiance, it's so comfortable in there...it's like being in your friend's loft.

This place is CASH only. They have no espresso machine. They serve drip coffee or french press.

I've struggled to find a cafe in the East Bay that I really like working and studying out of. Arbor is the best yet - it's big, open, spacious, airy, good light, lots of tables, and a good vibe.

No complaints - but the only reason it doesn't get a solid 5 stars. Their menu is a bit lacking. Their sandwiches are GREAT, but they could offer a bit broader selection, including some vegan options. Same goes for pastries. Even some chips and cookies to snack on would be great.

Good coffee, BEER, and a space that's nice and is getting nicer. This is a great place to study and read but I always bump into people I know and then I chat and it's a less great place to study and read. They have food for when you're like, shit, it's like 3, and I'm still here, and I'm hungry, and it's good.

I love this place!  I want to go back every day!  Hmmm....maybe I will!!

Had a tasty sandwich and a healthy mug of tea.  It looks like their menu shifts and is written on a board. They cold use a few more options (after all, I'm apparently going back 'every day', dont want to get bored).  I enjoyed a table for an hour or so, snacking, sipping, using the free wifi, taking care of some work.

A great place to meet up at and casually have a couple of pints.  Can't wait!

    Dear Oakland-

This spot really is a cut above. The space is fantastic. There are no shortage of chairs and workspace and the light is bright and friendly. Music is GREAT and at a the perfect volume. I really like the staff and the food is excellent. Coffee, Beer, Cheese sammie, Soup. What more do you need? The staff really is nice. I am totally offended by the lack of customer service in the Bay Area- restaurants and coffee houses are especial nightmares- I don't know why this is, but I am taking my dollars to places where the management keeps a tight ship and the staff cares about their work.

I hope Arbor does well- I also wanted to mention the bike storage- indoors and out- its a great nod to Oakland culture and the bike storage, surprisingly, is design-friendly, the bikers are really thoughtful of others bringing their hogs in and out...haha...no, just bicycles, and they have created a huge relief where bikers couldn't ordinarily safely park down the street in the neighborhood.

    Good job, Arbor.

A couple of new-shop quirks- I hope they can better manage the electrical outlet issues. They have a single outlet on a post to service half the room- its dangerous and causes a tangle and logistical nightmare to wade through, and 98 percent of the customers are glued to their screens. I do wish they would suck it up and get a credit card machine- understandably they save money, but its a real hassle. The prices aren't cheap enough to warrant - e.g., a sandwich and cup of coffee is more than 10 dollars. If your point of sale is between 8- 15 dollars - you need to have the option.

    Indoor bike parking!

They even have a bike pump and a freaking professional WORK STAND if you want to fiddle with your bike while you're there. This place gets amazing amounts of light, has tons of seating, and great music. On a Sunday there were a ton of people working on laptops, so I think competition is a little fierce for outlets. Since I was reading my books and magazines that didn't bother me. Tasty, dark coffee and nice teas served in a jar. Tried the portobello/hummus sandwich and found it quite tasty as well.

Indoor bike parking is the best thing ever. Every single business should copy this. Why do businesses spend so much on car parking (up to 40K for an outside space and triple that for underground) and so little on bike parking?? It's so nice to sit there and not worry that your bike is getting stolen outside.

Space for the Laptop Brigade and not too many plugs you say? Three stars already for the ability to actually get a seat not being judged by the apple's everywhere.
Add to that a Pizziaolo (B-fast time of course) feeling in the decor. Bicycle coffee co. in both french press and drip over options with no espresso (read: no one complaining about how watery their americano is). Decently priced food. Wonderful service. Inching up to the top, my friends.

By far the best thing about Arbor is what it brings to the table for the Temescal: protein.  I am pretty sure everywhere but the mixing bowl lacks this option. Egg sandwich or poached eggs on toast. Yes please.  Not 12.50 including my coffee?

    Thank you again.

I will admit a salad as a side option, for breakfast, makes me a little cringy.  Do I want it...... ummm.. well I guess.......meh.....no.......ok.....yeah sure. Oh wow, it goes really well with garlic. Never mind salad I am sorry for doubting you, we can still be friends right?

There are all the little charming things: the chalkboard table, the cool chandelier, the bike storage, the booze they now serve. Wait......booze? Oh yeah booze. They have that too. Guess that only charms my liver so I have to come back in the next morning for something to actually kill my hangover.

Remedy has better coffee options and an espresso machine but I have to be focused on the coffee and pastry need to fight through the hipster sheen in that place nowadays.

Arbor has carved a special place in my hart with LDL and HDL like no other place around here......yet.

I like this place as a work-on-your-laptop hangout (and its obvious when you walk in that I'm not the only one).

I like the fact that they have kombucha (though I do wonder if its ok to be sitting out at room temp all day...?), but I think their coffee is kinda meh.

I really like the idea behind bicycle coffee (and I want to like the flavor too!) but its just so dark and burnt tasting. Subrosa, fourbarrel, sightglass and other premium roasters have spoiled me i guess!

Oh, and I had a veggie panini here that was pretty tasty.

Mason jars must be the new cupcakes, because I swear...even the simplest cafe becomes exponentially adorable when your drink arrives in a vintage glass vessel. Ya with me on that?

Arbor Cafe is, therefore, adorable. It's also incredibly spacious, with so much worn wood and such high ceilings that you could almost be in a converted barn, which I absolutely love (I've always wanted to live in a barn. Must be my Petaluma roots).

Finding your own little nook to settle into is a breeze - they must have seating for at least 70 people in here. I naturally gravitated towards the long wooden communal table - somehow, having people seated all around me, in a group staring contest type setting, helps me avoid dilly-dallying. Otherwise, I'd just be sifting through Anthropolgie's latest sale.

Anyway, I ordered chamomile tea, which arrived in a cute mason jar with it's own metal infuser. Not sure what the deal is with the wi-fi because none of my table mates could figure out how to log-on, but I'm sure that's a temporary issue. Service was very friendly, though I think they're still working on staffing the place according to it's current popularity (which is destined to increase).

Arbor is a sweet, spacious, much-needed addition to the Temescal cafe scene. I might even prefer it to Remedy, simply because I don't have to arm-wrestle any hipsters to snag a seat here. Always a good thing.

This is great place, with a great atmosphere. I am not the biggest fan of the bicycle coffee (which they serve), but I love all the rest. The food is especially yummy and thoughtful. The teas are loose leaf, and delicious. Lots of big tables, perfect to pulling up a seat and studying on the laptop. Bike parking indoors.

The staff was friendly enough, I didn't feel judged when I asked questions about the coffee beans and my slow drip coffee was yummy although it cooled quickly in my cup. I like the open space, the rustic tables and that I could have a meeting without worrying about who was listening or trying to look cool. I'll go back and try the food next time as the sammies sound really good!

Extra points for the owner, he stopped by the table to say hello and was pleasant enough. I hope the cafe makes it and that the residents don't poo poo the sidewalk table idea, lord knows that stretch of Temescal could use a little revitalization and positive activity, especially with last year's robberies of the fast food joints nearby. Lapsters be warned, not many outlets for your Macs. Bummer.

A great cafe just down the street from my apartment. They serve Bicycle coffee, so whenever I go I get a yummy dark roast. Though don't be mistaken that this is just a place for coffee and tea, because the food is bomb too!

I've tried a salad (which always comes as a side if you order a sandwich) twice and the dressing is absolutely amazing! I had a brie and turkey sandwich which came on rosemary-focaccia bread and that too was very delicious.

Very personable staff, and it is such a huge space with a ton of seating area so it is ideal for studying or meeting up for a lunch or group activity.

The last time I talked to one of the staff members, they were getting their liquor license and were planning on increasing their hours in the near future. I'm very curious to see what they have planned because it is a wonderful, large space that has a bunch of potential for exploding (in a good way!) in the already booming strip of restaurants on Telegraph in Temescal.

I love this place. The coffee is great (Bicycle Coffee!), as is the food. And the space, OH the space! I frequented Remedy since I moved to the neighborhood and haven't been there once since Arbor has opened. The space is expansive, the tables large and wooden and pretty, the music at a perfect volume, and all of the staff are very friendly. There's also a place to put your bike inside, which is a nice perk. There's a nice chandelier, too. More of those would be nice. Probably the best part, though, are the big windows at the front of the shop. Lets a lot of great light in and helps you feel alive.

When a place opens, I feel like it's the perfect time to make friends with the staff, and that's what these guys are open to, which is so nice. Living just around the corner, there's a lot to talk about, and I really appreciate the conversation, understanding a bit more about what it's like to open a business in our fantastic neighborhood. Christopher is the owner. Chat him up, he's great.

They're trying to get beer and wine, too! Which will be a great addition when it happens.

I hope these guys thrive. Come and hang out here. It will help ensure that they do.

Now I don't review every cafe I end up working in, because then I'd be writing unpaid reviews eternally instead of doing my paid work. However, I'm so buzzed about this new community cafe that I wanna give them support in this cash-poor economy.

The cozy and friendly atmosphere here is what really gets me wanting to come back - without that, even the nicest furniture and food don't hold much allure for me.

Arbor has a big spacious interior lit by large windows, and balanced by the darker wood tones of the floor and furniture. I like that they have enough outlets to keep computer-workers goin', and both group tables and smaller 2-4 person tables, including outside seating. I gotta work staring at the screen, but I like sharing a table with friendly people. One table has blackboard paint so you can doodle away!

There's maybe 10(!) indoor spaces for bikes, which I think is really going to be great come rainy season (I don't own a car, so it's biking in all seasons). I appreciate places that support biking & with a bike lane on this part of Telegraph, that outdoor seating would be quieter and the access safer!

The place just opened, has a small menu, and the food items I've tried have been very nice. The coffee, I'm told by friends, is great (I don't drink it), and they have kombucha and a good tea selection. I'm hoping as they settle in the menu will grow and they'll figure out the supply balance so there's smaller baked items through the afternoon.

Most of the folks behind the counter have been friendly and helpful, and I can see coming here as a regular, getting a meal, and hunkering in for a work session. The owners are invested in the community, and with this space I could see evening poetry reading, music, film screenings, and other happenings to give them income and relaxed Oaklanders a place to go. It's close to BART and lots of bus lines, so bring on the punters. They plan to open in the evenings, so I'm just hinting here!

I always love more coffee options in my neighborhood!  This place is large with plenty of seating and great pour-over coffee from Bicycle Coffee.  They had two different coffee bean options to choose from which is nice since I tend to lean towards a medium roast.  I can't remember the exact price, but I think it was around $3.50 for pour over, not too bad considering some places charge $4.00+ for pour over.

When I was in, it was CASH ONLY but the guy who took my order said they'd be taking cards in the near future.  He was super friendly and actually made a point to have me sit down and relax because he'd call out my name when my drink was ready (unlike that other to be un-named shop up the street).

While Arbor does not have an espresso machine (and I enjoy the occasional latte), it has great pour-over coffee, plenty of tea options, is priced well, and plenty of seating.  I'll be back to try the food soon.

So here's the deal. You go in, you order a coffee, you pay for it, you get your coffee, and you drink it, either sitting down at the shop or you take it to go and drink it wherever you would like.

I'm really hoping this kind of place takes off in the Bay Area.

You like it. You go back. Nice and roomy place.

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways:
Indoor bicycle parking (when the three outdoor rails are full).
A stand to fix your bike on.
    Outdoor seating and indoor seating.
Grand communal tables: good for meetings, or making me feel less alone while I work.
Music at the very most perfect volume, with a lovely eclectic selection.
Super amazing friendly wonderful staff. I don't know your names, but you are so pleasant.
Quality tea, and (according to my coffee-drinking partner) quite delicious coffee.
    Fast internet connection.
Lots of friendly faces all around.
Kombucha! (I would have fermented it longer, though)
    (That's about ten...)

    What I would suggest:
    More power outlets. Oh dear.
More varieties of teas. I was drinking quite unruly amounts of tea in order to be able to work on my computer during the day when I moved here, because for 2 weeks we had no internet juice at home. After one week, I got a little tired of the small selection. Give me something with berries! Give me a deep chai! Give me something smokey! And perhaps a tea-ppuccino.
    (Two things!)

What I have yet to try:
    Their food.
    Evening readings?
    Their booze.

I think I'll have to go back this afternoon.

Hint: The internet needs a password, just go ask and they will give it to you with a smile!

Egg and cheese sandwich is the BOMB. I have no idea why it's so ridiculously good -- something about that garlic aioli, maybe? Or is there another secret ingredient? French press coffee is just as good (and cheaper) than the pour-over. Good ambience, and the music is totally non-annoying. Good stuff. One point gone for being colder than my sister's non-heated apartment. Brrrr on a cold day. Bring a blanket. But otherwise, I'm a big fan!

I love this place; it's spacious, comfortable and welcoming in a way that many urban coffee shops are not.  I love the sturdy but mismatched furniture. The kombucha may be flat but it is delicious and brewed in house. The dr. zuess-esque mural is light and playful, and they serve great local beers on tap. PLUS, the indoor bike parking just tops the whole place off perfectly. so, thank you, arbor cafe, for being great in your own right but also for offering an alternative to remedy down the street... the coffee there was always good but i just never felt at home, from the cramped space to the smarmy logo...

the only downside to Arbor is a lack of espresso machine cuz sometimes a girl just wants a latte. the internet can also a bit spotty...but seems to bounce back.

Looking forward to the day when this place stays open later! oakland lacks coffee shop/cafes that stay open late. I'd also recommend placing the menu in view of the person paying at the cash register...I love the chalkboard but there's something slightly unsettling about ordering when you can't see the options...all in all a great place!

I rate cafes on a weighted, 100-point scale based service, food, cost, and ambiance. Arbor Cafe received a 61.

I didn't try any food, as they had put everything away already (we came about 45 minutes before closing- naughty!) but the coffee was Bicycle, which seems to enjoy a well-earned reputation in Rock Ridge.

The place was roomy, with lots of communal and private sitting, and plenty of outlets for transient laptop wielders.

The staff was friendly, and not at all the type of baristas who roll their eyes and talk about you just loud enough for you to hear.

I'll definitely go back here to work and sip... just not before closing.

(Side note- why do all the coffee houses close before 9 around here?!)

found my new go-to spot for lunch!

Usually, I bring my lunch to work. The other day I was running late and didn't have time to prepare anything, and I decided to stop by Arbor since my coworkers always rave about this place. I ordered a turkey and brie sandwich, and a regular french press.

The coffee here is damn good, and the staff doesn't carry the same pretentious hipster attitude that Remedy employees do. My sandwich was ready in a matter of minutes, and it was delicious! Turkey and brie, with garlic aioli and lettuce on grilled focaccia bread. It also came with a side of mixed greens, for $8.00. They have ample seating inside for those of you who want to stay and do some work, or relax on your day off.

The baristas were really nice, one guy gave me a free scone for no reason! Gotta like that . . .

Also, BIG tables, great for study parties or just being able to spread out with your work and not feel cramped. I really liked the vibe and the music they played sounded like they were playing it straight off my ipod, yet another plus.

I've been watching Arbor Cafe get up and running in the hood and enjoying what I am seeing so far.  They serve up some tasty coffee, both French press and drip.  And they are slowly adding different food to their limited menu.  I really like their scones.

The place is very minimal and airy. A good amount of plug ins for laptop squatters like me, and free wifi.

I really like the staff that work there, who have been greeting me by name from the 2nd time I've visited.

The comfy chair in the back is mine, so don't sit in it! LOL.

I just moved to Oakland, and this place is my new favorite hang out.  Good coffee, great tea, and I love the environment.

The cafe has delicious food, is well lit, spacious tables. I love that it serves both coffee and beer and I like the study vibe, it draws out all the local grad students. Its popular because its good, but it also makes it sometimes packed. Minus one star for less than 12oz of decent coffee costs 2.50 and there are no refills. Perhaps its futile to rage against such things, but there you have it.  Once I went there and a very pleasant woman was working the register. But this fine Wed morning, I wanted very much to minus another star for dickish, smug dude working there for giving me a hard time for not seeing where the water pitcher was. Hey maybe if the coffee was stronger or more voluminous, i'd have normal working cognitive capacity for 5 bucks. Judgy cafe workers be kind to your drug addicts, we are vulnerable pre dosage, and you are a bad portlandia sketch. But whatever, so am I, its a decent place. Viva expensive tea in jars!

Tooootally minimalist DIY-vibe warehousy space that actually reminds me of an art studio.  Really friendly, and I heard they're getting their wine/beer license soon too.

Spacious well lit space, good tunes, good spot to work in. Indoor bike parking. Friendly staff.  Coffee is alright. Haven't tried the food.

I'm pretty much in love.  The coffee isn't as spectacular as the Ritual they pour up at Remedy, but the space is so much more conducive to being awesome in.  It is big and roomy with fat friendly seating and they don't play the music so brutally loud that I can't concentrate on whatever it is I'm doing other than drinking coffee.  Simple but tasty food menu, and wine and beer coming in the next week or so, along with extended hours.  If this turns out to be an awesome place to work in the evening I will be so excited -- that is something Oakland sorely needs more of --  though it sounds like they plan it to be more of a bar/lounge.

Airy, comfortable, relaxing place to sit around and enjoy a nice coffee (either pour-over or french press, no espresso drinks).  A small menu of tasty sandwiches, salads, and soup is available.  They also had great pumpkin chocolate chip bread from Bakesale Betty. Very friendly staff.
    Will return!

This place has not even really opened yet, so they have a very limited menu. We went there for a breakfast and it was wonderful. Great atmosphere as the space is open, old and inviting. All of the people working there are really nice and they had very pleasant music.

First of all, they had Bicycle Coffee which is fantastic. They make each cup by drip. I had decaf (I know, sigh) and it tasted amazing (normally I hate decaf). Martha and I had a very nice egg sandwich which was simple and very good and then a strawberry scone which was also fantastic. The space is really nice, reminds me of the Actual Cafe, nice big odd wooden tables.

We spent some time talking with the owner Christopher and he has a great attitude about what he wants to have and what sort of quality he wants. He wants to be very responsive to the community and is starting slowly. Based on what I have seen so far, I think it's going to get better and better and I will keep coming back.

The space is beautiful, the food is good, the music is nice and at a perfect volume. But there are still kinks to work out -- mainly service! I've been in several times since they've opened, and on more than half of those occasions waited and waited and waited until the guy at the counter was finished his conversation (mostly, it's the guy with the short hair; the girls are better). He didn't even acknowledge me or apologize or anything. I almost walked out once. It stinks when you want to support a new place, but feel treated shabbily -- especially when forking over $3 for a cup of coffee. I've heard many complaints about the service at Remedy. People say the baristas are snobby, but I've got to say that they're way nicer and more attentive than at Arbor.

If the service improves and the wifi becomes more consistent annnd the kombucha stops being so flat, this wil be a wonderful place, but, to me, it's not quite there, yet.
