Aragon High School doesn't have so much of a community feel as San Mateo High School, but it does stand out as one of the best in the SMUHSD.
With all of the upgrades done to the campus, I wish I could have gone to school there now rather than before.
After middle school, Aragon seemed to be the best choice out of the SM highschools, and it exceeded my expectations. The students here are friendly and the staff and teachers genuinely care about their students-- both inside and outside of the classroom. I found the AP programs to be stellar and by the time college apps and the SAT's rolled around, I felt extremely confident in how I had grown academically. Students are encouraged to participate and challenge themselves with both sports programs and other extracurricular activities. I'm at a great college now any many of my peers went ivy league or to top UC schools.
On any given lunch break you will find students eating lunch outside in the grass quad, usually with some Bob Marley laying in the background. A great 4 years, and there is truly something here for everyone. I was Student Body President Class of 2007 so I will always bleed red and black. Go Dons!
Not as cool as San Mateo High School, but as a Borel graduate a lot of my friends went there. And I had Guy Oling for summer school. Seriously... it was like Mark Harmon. We watched Point Break to learn about the presidents.
Anyhoo... weird architectural layout, and weird is good.
Public school.... fine joint... good neighbourhood.
=-)
I currently attend Aragon as a sophomore [9 days left!!] so this may be quite biased. I'm highly active in leadership/government and I try to know lots about what is going on around school. I know for a fact that the staff here are VERYY close. I heard they go on ski trips together. Some of my teachers i've had, i disliked, others i absolutely love! [my spanish teacher, mrs. elenz-martin, is probably my best friend]. i know the test scores are amazing and the AP courses are very good.
cons: the school looks like crap, but i've seen worse. we lack spirit. and students aren't respectful to the school [aka graffiti].
I did not attend Aragon, but both of my sisters did, so I think I can provide a fairly unbiased review of the school. First of all, both my older sister and younger sister turned out pretty well, which goes to show that the school seems to be a stable, safe environment. It's apparently been ranked as one of the top 1% of schools in the nation, which is pretty admirable in itself, and it's also recently been refurbished so it looks gorgeous from the outside nowadays. The only drawback is its rather shabby track and field. I recently came to the track to run a few laps with my sister, and there was dirt flying around all over, obscuring my vision and choking up my throat. It was a pretty horrid experience--I think I'll stick with the Burlingame High track from now on.
I loved Aragon when I went there in the 80's. Went back again recently and would love to send my children there! Test scores are awesome and they are a "Distinguished School"
Still seems great! Supposedly Aragon had to cut back on a lot of staffing, but this school is newly renovated! Made me a Don for life!
In the entire San Mateo High school district Aragon is the place I would send my child. I went to Aragon, both my parents went to Aragon and I know a LOT of people who graduated and went on to college and other successful things. My problem with Aragon is the staff is they openly favor wealthy children and show them more extra attention because they know the poor students can't afford a college education. Aragon prides itself on the high number of students who go onto a 4 year college after graduating. The teachers expect all students to come from a home with unlimited resources and perfect parents.Im sure most people can agree a perfect home life is a rare thing. I have often seen low income students struggle just to keep up with the expectations of the teachers. Everyone I know who was low income that attended aragon fell thought he cracks, and the wealthy students didn't. The teachers just don't want to waste their time. Also Aragon has a really high drop out rate..much higher then they publicly admit. They have ways of passing off students to other schools without making it reflect badly on their drop out record. Some people had wonderful experiences at Aragon, but often times the teachers only focus on the 'promising' students rather then all the children equally. I felt abandoned by my teachers and with a difficult home life, I had nobody to turn too.
The students are open and friendly, more then a typical high school. I just wanted to post a review from another point of view because I know many Aragon alumni have quite a few common complaints about Aragon that I know personally. I was class of 2002.
I went to Aragon ages ago, but it was the best high school in San Mateo at the time and looking at the STAR report it still is!
Aragon High School is great. The football team, the school, the clubs, the girls, the community, the hot cheerleaders! oh yeah! I went here before and I still love passing by.
Aragon high school---my alma mater...what can I say about the school that gave me some good days and some bad? My four years at Aragon were alright. If I had to give it a grade, it would be like C to a B. But I gave it an A for my Senior year because that was a good year. Anyways, overall, Aragon isn't a very bad place to go to school. The one thing I like about it is the rich diversity. Walking around during brunch or lunch, you see alot of different people with alot of different interests...the staff are down-to-earth and they keep it real with the kids, not fake....there are alot of things to do at Aragon as well....but, there are a couple of things that were alittle sour--everyone always complain about how miserable Aragon but it isn't....juss to them....Aragon doesn't have any spirit....it use to back in the day but now, not even a lickfull...there are sterotypes about Aragon as well--being known as a rich school for one thing however, even though it has a couple of new technology at the school, they're still no different...they lost alot of good teachers last year due to the cutbacks....So, Aragon is a good school and I highly recommend it to any parent....
