Lake Oswego, OR
We've been wishing that there was a good middle eastern restaurant in this part of town for a long time (well, that and Indian, which we're still waiting for...). We were surprised to look over and see Arabian Nights whilst on our way home the other evening.
We could only hold out for a couple of days before giving it a go, and we're very glad we did! We enjoyed the Mezza platter and the pie combination - which includes spinach pie, cheese pie, and zaatar - one of our faves. We got our order to go, everything was prepared to perfection and was fresh from the oven upon our arrival. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. We'll be coming back here often - as this place will surely be habit-forming.
Oh, and the pita bread is every bit as exquisite as many other reviewers have indicated! -

We have been here twice. Both times for take-out. The first round we got different sandwiches and a cheese pie. Sandwiches were tasty and fresh. The cheese pie is freshly baked and 80% ohmygawdawesome! the other 20% is thisischeeseybutbland. The reason is mozzarella covers the majority of the pie, while the center has feta and maybe some herbs. once cut in quarters your first bit is all feta nom nom. Then, mozzarella. Now, the mozzarella is delicious, just not with the salty goodness of feta.
The second round was ok but not nearly as good. I ordered the Shish Tawouk. Chicken skewer on rice with a side of garlic sauce. Generally I avoid kabobs and rice because for $11.00 it is never satisfying. I caved this time due to the side of garlic sauce.
I get home, open my boxes, and no side of garlic sauce. So for $11.00, I get one skewer of chicken and some rice. So I called. Then gentleman says that Shish Tawouk does not come with garlic sauce. I tell him the menu on line says it does. He says again "it does not come with garlic sauce". After going back and forth about this a few times he says "fine, come back and Ill give you some garlic sauce.". Fine, but I live 20 minutes away. So, I was stuck eating a somewhat dry kabob and rice with no sauce.
I am only giving them 4 starts because the sandwiches and cheese pies have been good. I can not tell you how annoyed I get when I don't get what I order though and when on line menus don't match what they really serve. Is it that hard to update? -

I have tried a lot of middle eastern food and i am pretty particular when it comes to certain dishes. My husband kept talking about Arabian Nights and finally we made the trip to LO for dinner. Absolutely amazing. I loved everything from the hummus to the kabobs....perfect balance of seasoning and great quality of meats and veggies. We loved it so much that we asked them to cater our wedding- which by the way, was the absolute best part of the reception! Everyone raved about the food and we could not have been more pleased with the presentation. Try this spot- you will crave it again and again!

KAfta was no more than ground been on a stick with minimal seasoning.
Lamb kabob was OK... I do MUCH better at home with Costco lamb & more liberal seasoning.
I MIGHT try it again as it's close, but really not worth a special trip.
Really nice guys though... shame they can't cook as well. -

Order the right things & you'll be happy! Lamb shank is awesome, meza platter is great. Fresh, hot, soft, thick pitas make the whole trip worth it!
One caveat: arabic music videos playing non-stop are great fun, but not condusive to a quiet or romantic meal. -

I ordered the shish tawook sandwich for lunch but I was given the chicken shawrma instead
Good thing it wasn't bad though
I want to go back and try more things but no -

Another reviewer said it best - Arabian Nights is a hidden gem in the Lake Grove/Lake Oswego area. The hummus and labneh were excellent, as were the entrees. And I will never forget the bread.... hot, delicious, and totally off limits for me (I am allergic...)... however.... it was so tempting, I stole more than a few bites. Absolutely delish!
I was impressed with the moderately low prices of entrees (especially in comparison with other similar restaurants). I only wish that there were more veggie options that didn't include the delicious bread.
In a nutshell: the service was friendly, the food was excellent, and the prices were more than reasonable. I'll definitely be back to try more! -

Hands down the best place in LO!! MUST try the falafel & the lamb shank! I can NEVER leave there w/o either of them!! Their lamb kabob roll/sandwich w/ fries.. to die for...
in all... I had ever had a bad meal there. I only make sure I go there often enough to keep them open! I never want them to close!! -
Review from Laura D.
We went here after seeing the reviews on Yelp. Thanks, everyone - because this gem is hidden in a strip mall and I think we've driven past it dozens of times over the years and never even seen it, nor would have stopped to check it out if we had. That we haven't gone before now is a huge pity!
It's not cheap - but it's not horribly expensive and it's worth every penny. The four booths with cushioned floor seating were gorgeous, but as we have a toddler who as yet does better when restrained in a high chair, we opted for a standard table this time.
The service was excellent; they were friendly to us, friendly and kind to our son, and there was never any time we wanted them at our table but that they were there within seconds - without our signaling, and without incessant checking-up on us when we didn't need them. I love that they managed to appear just when we wanted to transition from main course to dessert even though we hadn't eaten all of our main courses.
The pita bread, as advertised, is incredible. Oh so excellent. My son liked it - and he only sometimes likes bread, but he knew a good thing when he got one, apparently.
One review mentions the falafel looking like they were pressed in a shallow muffin form, then fried to a dark brown. They do look like that! I'm no expert either, but I happily ate them, as the exterior was pleasantly crunchy and the interior moist and tasty. They didn't, in taste or texture, seem overcooked to me.
I thought, when I got my dinner, that the portion looked a little small on the meat and about right on the rice. Then I ate it, and failed to finish the meat. The portion was more than plenty, and it was very tasty. I had grilled lamb; my husband had the mixed grill, but as I didn't try it, I can't comment on that - other than that he said it was equally good. -

Decided to check this out instead of "our usual" and my "standard American fare" husband enjoyed it, so gold star there. Four booths with cushioned floor seating, gold star #2. Very tasty black tea w/sage, cucumber w/yoghurt, grilled meats on the Mixed Grill Supreme and side salad, gold star #3. Waiter was attentive & friendly, if quiet.
Not so fantastic: the falafel, minus 1 star. I am no expert, but these looked like they were pressed in a shallow muffin form, then fried to the color of the grilled lamb (dk. brown) and hard enough to bounce on the plate. Also watching the cook still in his plastic gloves come in from outside talking on his cell phone, drink his beverage & then go back to the kitchen was less than thrilling - minus 1 star, even tho it is possible that he changed gloves out of my sight.
We WILL go back and try again, and hope this place lasts. -

Had a very nice meal here last week. The service was very friendly.
The food was oh so tasty! I had the shwarma and it was moist, flavorful and there was enough to take home. The pita bread is soft and warm, it was one of the best home made pitas I"ve had in Portland! My huband had a lamb kebab dish with rice, vegetables and ate every bite.
It was very comfortably decorated, clean and we felt relaxed since service did not rush us. The prices as reasonable, considering this is Lake O.
We'll be back -

Friendly service and interesting seating options, but some of the food could be better. The hummus was tasty and my son loved the Fattoush and also the Lentil Soup. Kafta Kabobs were OK, about the same as I've tasted in other places (hard to go wrong with ground beef, I guess). The worst part was the Beef Shawarma - oily, overcooked and dried out. There is plenty of parking out front, which is nice, but I doubt we'll go back.

Best Middle Eastern food I've had in the Portland area hands down! And take it from me- I'm half Saudi-Palestinian and was raised in Dubai so I've been raised on Arabic food. The menu isn't too complex which translates into exquisite focus on the main specialties.
The mezze platter is great to share as an appetizer- the babaghanouj and hummus are amazing, tabouleh is so fresh and loaded with parsley, and the stuffed grape leaves amazing. As for main courses, I highly recommend the Shish Taouk (chicken kababs), Kafta kabab (parsley/ground beef), and chicken schawarma- and make sure you ask for a side of the garlic sauce, it's DIVINE.
The bread is another highlight, you can see them putting it in the oven as you order it and it comes so hot and pillowy and exquisite.
However, if you want to eat something very traditional, I suggest ordering the half chicken with Bokhari rice and garlic sauce- spicy and tangy and huge portions.
Additionally, the staff/owners are so hospitable and helpful (and good at remembering customers). If you want some delicious, authentic Arabic food at a decent price, this is the place to go! -

On my visit lately, I tried their rotisserie chicken. It is a half chicken that comes with basmati rice and a small salad. Their rotisserie chicken was really tasty, every bit of it. The salad that came with it was just okay. Hey, it's a complimentary salad... so I didn't bother myself to complain about free stuff. Now I have 2 favorite items from this restaurant; one is the shawarma chicken plate and the other one is the rotisserie chicken. When I am really hungry, I add their hummus plate for my appetizer (it tastes great with their home baked pita bread).

Been here twice. First time was right after they opened. They were out of chicken-- all types, including rotisserie and shwarma. Instead we got lentil soup, a greek salad, a bean appetizer (poor something), and a pita sandwich-- it was all good and the homemade pita was plentiful and delicious. Went back again. Again, no rotisserie chicken. The chicken shwarma was available and was pretty good. The Kafta Kebab was pretty good too (served with rice). However, we were only given one pita this time. I will probably be back for convenience and authenticity (feels like at someones house and have the option of sitting on the floor);. Oh yeah baklava is pretty good (ask if you dont want herseys syrup on the plate tho i guess you can just not dip

This is a pretty good Arabian place compared to the quality of overall American Middle Eastern Restaurants.
What I found surprising is that they actually make good shawerma, which is difficult to find in this country, especially in portland.
They also make a good Kibbeh. -

I dont understand why this restaurant isn't packed for lunch and dinner. In the Boones Ferry/Kruse Way land of chains, this is a great option for something different. Food is delicious and the staff is really nice - especially when they start to recognize you (I remember thinking they were a bit stand-off-ish at first). I would give the food 5 stars, but there is a little inconsistency in the size of the wraps - sometimes they are huge and sometimes they feel a bit skimpy.
Overall a wonderful alternative to the overpriced chains in the area! -

Not bad for L.O.! Which is a big accolade compared to all the great Middle Eastern places in Portland. The staff is cordial and the place is never crowded. They always have the international TV channels on, often soccer.
