Sadly, Gertel's retail shop is now closed as of June 22, 2007. They continue their wholesale business in Brooklyn.

I grew up on treats from Gertel's as my dad works a tiny LES block away and has been friends with the proprietors and workers for years--reportedly they used to call him (and my grandfather before him!) in from the street when something good had just come out of the oven. The rugellach from Gertel's are the real deal and oh-so-delicious, as are the hammentaschen and mandel bread (all of which my dad used to ship out to Mass for me when I was in college). Their challah is sublime--I'd be perfectly happy eating an entire loaf all by itself.
Everything that Gertel's bakes up is highly habit-forming, so beware...and say hello to my dad when you're there.

Hammantachen not as good as Moishe's. Kind of anemic and tasteless. I've had good and bad service here over the years.
Flavorfull Chinese cookies make up for it! Mmmmmmmm....

For nearly a century, Gertel's on the Lower East Side has been a bastion of delectable Jewish pastries and baked goods. Just a block away from Economy Candy at the tail-end of Hester Street, this New York institution draws the kosher crowd and food mavens alike. An appetizing display of hand-made pastries such as chocolate & raspberry rugelach, black & white cookies and prune-filled hamentaschen beckon passersby from the store window. Its unhurried counter staff and humble interior belies a bustling wholesale business in the back, which turns out a dazzling array of freshly baked pies, cakes, cookies, turnovers, babkas and breads. Despite rumors of closing up shop to make way for a proposed condo development, sanguine owner Abe Stern maintains that Gertel's will continue to appease its devoted clientele with classic Jewish recipes for many more years to come.

oh man was this stuff good... when it comes to these kinds of baked items, you don't want people skimping on the butter, and Gertel's most definitely doesn't. the rugelach are absolutely delish (so moist and flaky, and as my sister's fiancee observed, with the right ratio of dough-to-filling), and whatever pastry Alli K and i shared on location was amazing (i don't know what it was called, but it was chocolate wrapped up in a perfectly flaky pastry dough, with powdered sugar and drizzled chocolate on top.) well worth the calories.

They have really good jelly donuts. I'm not a fan of all jelly donuts but theirs are good.

Kosher breads and pastry, near a few other food stores. Convenient if you're in the nabe.
