An unexpected delight. We live on MVY in the summer, and i have avoided the tourist crowds of the lighthouse / Gay Head for years. This place looks like tourist take-out, to be avoided. Then we saw the outdoor area, and couldn't resist returning for a meal.
We went for breakfast, got there early (good parking, no crowds, choice of seating) and had a fabulous meal...it may have been fabulous for the surprise, but really, great. Three of us, eggs on fishcakes, french toast, and omelet, so a nice variety. My husband liked the fishcakes so much he went right home to replicate. Good coffee (hard to find on island). As we left we waved to the matriarch in the kitchen, still cooking and still caring about the food.
We enjoyed it so much we have gone back twice, both times really enjoying it.
The menu warns you of a wait, too many tables and a small kitchen, so be patient and enjoy the most spectacular view on island. we actually have had very timely service, which we attribute to going early, but would happily wait and just enjoy.
Embarrassed that after years on island we have been missing a hidden gem. -

Great view if you are outside...or even inside for that matter. Friendly, reasonably quick service, but who wants to rush when you have that view? It is being run a lot better than it seemed to be a few years ago & everything was great. The lobster bisque & burgers are favorites!

Um, hell yeah! I love it when you find good food in unexpected places, this one being a tourist stop. My friend and I split a basket of sweet potato fries and I had a really nice cup of chowder. Just what we needed on a cold and rainy day.
I noticed the display about the history of the area on the way out, and wished I had a chance to linger over it. This is Wampanaog land, and I would have loved to learn more about the tribe. -

this place would be more of a 2-3 star review if it weren't for the 5 star view of the cliffs, the beach, the lighthouse. oh what a view. it is perfection on all sides.
for the record:
-make reservations
-most of the seafood is not caught on the island/overpriced for what it is. that said, i recommend the scallop roll and crab cakes.
-watch out for critters...and by critters, i mean a family of skunks that basically lives around the restaurant and comes out at sunset to dumpster dive. that said: they've never sprayed anyone and i personally didn't mind them/thought they were cute.
-watch out for aggressive hungry seagulls- more annoying than the skunks imho.
-say hi to the restaurant owners' adorable dog izzy! -

Ah, the Aquinnah Shop. Some of my first memories are of Luther (medicine man to the Wampanoag Tribe) scooping me some chocolate ice cream. Or Anne putting extra paprika on my chowder just like I like it.
The Aquinnah Shop boasts a fantastic view of the ocean and the Aquinnah clay cliffs. This is the only restaurant in Aquinnah with waitress service. It's BYOB. It's only open seasonally.
I especially like the blue corn pancakes at breakfast. This place is filled with memories of my childhood. Many of the same people are working there 20 years later.
Also available at the Aquinnah Shop are random "indian" tourist items, post cards, moccasins, jewelery, collectors spoons (ha!)... once you've eaten go up to the look out point, and then walk around the beach!
Also check out the fantastic display case of arrowheads inside the restaurant. -

I usually read reviews before picking places to eat, but the surprise of the Aquinnah Shop at the Gay Head Cliffs was one of the best parts of my vacation. It was early afternoon when I arrived. DH and I were seated immediately outside on the deck. Breath-taking views of the Cliffs and the ocean! Ordered a hot dog and burger at such inexpensive prices I was amazed. That hot dog was the best one I've ever had. Yummy hand cut fries! And a silly seagull who sat up on the roof checking out what everyone was having for lunch. I will defiantly stop in here again next time I'm in Martha's Vineyard!

Two hour wait for a party of 7, and I don't mean a wait for a table, I mean wait for food. We didn't get our first cup of coffee for 25 Minutes. Even the water was awful. What?! Ordered Lobster Newburg, it had no Newburg, it was just lobster in an egg blanket. Just Terrible!

As you approach the overlook for the Cliffs and the Gay Head Light, this is the only sit-down restaurant at the end of a short line of seafood shacks and souvenir stands. We ordered from the takeout window, and had the very best fried clams I have ever tasted in my entire life. I can't speak to anything else, but those clams were fantastic.

The freshest and tastiest fish I had on my most recent trip to the Vineyard -- even better than the $125+ dinners for two we had elsewhere! I had the fish and chips, which was completely delicious, and my girlfriend had the fish cakes, which were OK.
The fish was just so fresh and flavorful, which was what we were looking for. The nicer, fancier restaurants' fish was overcooked, overseasoned or both. This place completely hit the spot -- and if you're making a trip to the Vineyard, you really have to check out the lighthouse at Aquinnah -- so while you're there, swing by this place for the delicious fish and chips!
