Review from Kelly L.
Portland, OR
My experience at Aquatic Sports was fantastic - Colin is your man if you need any assistance - he is a great instructor and very knowledgeable on the sport. They have a pool which makes class time convenient, and offer both Saturday (all day) and Tuesday evening classes.
I am getting my open water certification elsewhere (warm, tropical waters), so I can't speak to the certification dive, but I do feel that the course offered by Aquatic Sports gets you ready and comfortable for open water certification - the training is thorough. We also got most of our equipment there - I usually shop Amazon to get deals, but it's best to buy at the shop so you can try equipment on, and take it back no hassel if it doesn't work.
Great experience, highly recommend it. -

Had a Groupon for the Diving lesson so my husband went with our 11 year old daughter. The instruction was limited, basically said these are the hand signs, tank & pool. Didn't really talk about what to do if water gets in the mask under water and want to do if you get the bends. My daughter did find the experience with the equipment fun so I give it 3 stars. *Must be 10 and older*

Review from Ed P.
Aquatic Sports is one of the best scuba resources in the area. It is ethically and intelligently managed, well equipped, and staffed by people whose commitment to diving is infectious. There are two shops in this area that I regularly recommend without hesitation, and this is certainly one of them. Their heated pool is located on-site. Aquatic Sports is affiliated with NAUI, IANTD and SSI, if memory serves me, and they offer a broad spectrum of training possibilities. Customer service is excellent, and they've been a pleasure to deal with through the years.

Review from Kalyn M.
Portland, OR
We had a great experience here. My husband and I stopped by in early September to purchase goggles & snorkels for our trip to Hawaii and eventually for scuba when we get certified. Although we had done some research into the gear, we didn't know much about selecting it. The gentleman who helped us was very knowledgeable and low pressure, I think his name was Adrian (?). He told us what we should look for when determining which mask/snorkel to purchase and then let us fiddle with products on our own time. We both happened to select models that were out of stock so Adrian offered us the floor models with free cleaner, defogger, and comfort straps. We were thinking about purchasing fins too but they were a little beyond our budget. Instead of pressuring us, Adrian informed us that we could rent fins in Hawaii for about $19/week and that we could purchase the diving fins later when we're ready to certify. We both appreciated his frank & helpful advice. We'll definitely be going back!

History
Established in 1966
Aquatic Sports, a family owned business started by John Powelson, has served thousands of divers in the Portland area since 1966. John began diving in Southern California in the late '50s. He received his first instructor certificate at the Scripps Institute of Technology in 1960. John was an instructor for the Natl. Association of Scuba Schools in 1965 with the rating of O.W.I #20.
In the early '70s John helped his friend Bob Clark with the beginnings of S.S.I. The very first S.S.I instructional clinic was held in Oregon and a new training agency was born.
John was instrumental in the development of dive rescue training in Oregon. In the '60s he helped organize one of the state's first dive rescue teams. He was deputy sheriff for Yamhill County. In 1992, John received one of the first S.S.I Platinum 5000 awards for industry contributions.
Jeff Powelson started working in the business early and after college purchase the business and has ran it ever since

I have been diving since i was 8 years old. With a family in the business I didn't have much of a choice. I love to travel and take customers to cool places. I love to see the smile of new divers finding out how awesome this activity is. I love to take photo's. You can check those out on our website. I love to spread the word of a healthy ocean and do anything possible to save her for my generation and my children's generation and beyond.
