Applewood is not only one of the top dog grooming facilities in the city, it has some of the best groomers in the NATION working there. The owner was once a top dog handler and groomer.... he is now a well recognized judge in the AKC.
I have used their grooming services before shows, have shown dogs with them, and have taken my dogs there for commercial kenneling when I had to leave town without them.
Do NOT go here if you want to get a cute haircut for your pet puppy. It is expensive because they have highly skilled groomers and apprentices who will hand groom to the AKC breed standard. You can get your terrier groomed with clippers, but they have the knowledge and talent to hand strip a terrier coat and show off the correct texture of their coat.
Best of all, the staff LOVE dogs. I had one dog who was so well liked that even though i would drop her off expecting her to sleep in a crate, i know one of the guys used to let her sleep in the living quarters on the foot of his bed.
You will probably pay for it, but there is no better facility for dogs anywhere in AZ.
This place is for the dogs.
....and cats.....
I was hesitant to try this place for a couple of reasons. First, Winston, our dog-son, has never stayed anywhere except with family. Second, the word "Resort" made me think EXPENSIVE. However, after doing some comparison shopping it's pretty reasonably priced for someplace that looks so luxurious. Afterall, don't we all really want the best for our little Fido's of the world?
The staff were certainly friendly enough and the accomodations were spacious and clean. The grounds were gorgeous with a large area to play in and even a pool if your pooch likes to swim (of course, it costs extra for the swim). My husband took a private tour and was very impressed!
We booked Winston for a 5-day stay and when we returned it was reported to us that our dog got a "bloody nose" while he was being groomed and my husband and I spent $400 between Vet bills and testing to determine there wasn't anything wrong with our pooch. I can't help but be suspicious with the resort and/or the groomer - especially since Winston has never had a bloody nose before or since (his stay).
Bottom line: The resort has a great exterior, interior, and friendly staff. Just think twice before being distracted by the shiny object.
Applewood Pet Resort - What a wash!
I have been going to Applewood for about 2 years now and my dog has loved it for boarding. The grooming has been a bit of a struggle but until today i was pretty satisfied with the experience. The past couple of times I have taken my dog in for cuts i have been not totally happy with the cut, but explained to them what i would like differently, tipped them and continued to return because the experience was more positive then negative. A younger man out front had encouraged me to bring her back, keep trying and was so friendly that i continued to return until today.
I called to try to get her in for a groom and they told me her groomer did not want to groom my dog anymore and that i would probably be happier elsewhere. While this is probably true i was totally shocked to be turned away, no discussion with the groomer, a manager, nothing. I asked to speak with the manager who had nothing to say except that the groomers managed there own business and could make such decisions on their own. Also that they did not speak English so it would all probably be lost in translation any way.
As a local business woman, I understand that relationships and how you treat people is everything. I wish Applewood all the best with their attitude and management style. I am sure exactly what they put out will come back to them. Luckily there are so many great new grooming spots in the area. I can't wait to try them out and find my dog a stylish new look!
I have been taking my dog to Applewood for a monthly shampoo and shine since we moved here (in July). I have been impressed. Sage is a bit of a high-maintenance pooch (emotionally high maintenance) so I always worry leaving him anywhere (you can guess how he got so emotionally high-maintenance :-) But he comes back happy and looking wonderful. They do a phenomenol job bathing, brushing and clipping him (he's a lab so he doesn't need much clipping). The staff is friendly, professional and always happy to see me and my dog. The place is very, very clean. I haven't boarded him here, but I would feel pretty safe doing so. Overall, I think Applewood is a great place and I'm happy I found it.
The Pet Grooming here is a little bit more expensive than at Petsmart but it is worth it. ($45-$55 for my Shih Tzu) Riley's groomer is Johan and he is the best groomer in Phoenix. Riley gives this a 4 Paws! Please note the attached photo is of Riley on a Bad Hair Day this was between grooming appointments. HA!
