I should have written my review much sooner than this!!! We loved Appetez!! It seems to me to be a friendly, neighborhood restaurant. My two daughters and I visited on a Sunday, and were treated royally. It's close enough to walk to and we enjoyed the walk home talking about what a nice place it is. The decor is winecork wallish, which is interesting and I loved the private booth. Nice touch. Even w/my daughters, we had privacy, instead of competing with every one else to hear each other.
Ok, I don't remember what we had, but I remember it was delicious!! There is also outside patio seating, I wonder if I can bring my dogs after I find out about the doggie day spa in the same shopping center!!!
Oh yes, and it was cute to write our thoughts in the notebook after dining.
Let me put it this way, it's not my mom's kind of place, she preferred Denny's. But we Loved it and will continue visiting.
Now I gotta find that doggie day spa!!!! -

A mixed bag on this review here. I booked the Cabernet room for a holiday dinner for my work team and the room was great. Did the banquet option and thats where the review becomes mixed. The appetizers were not very warm but there was plenty to go around for 8 people. Then came time to choose the entree. The menu indicates three options, Chicken, Halibut, and Steak. Well, unfortunately no Halibut. So 4 of us order Chicken, the other 4 Steak. No option to choose our steak preference, so they all came out Medium Rare, which I love but not sure how the others felt. The entrees were good, not great, but good. Dessert was good but it appeared as a prepackaged chocolate cake rather than coming off homemade.
Service was spotty and it just didn't feel like we had their focus. There was a delay in sitting us down so we had to wait at the bar, which was entirely different in terms of decor and style from the dining section.
Overall, I wouldn't mind coming back here for the food when its fresh because their appetizers are kick ass. However, from a group party, banquet, wont do that again. -

We ordered food from their catering department this week and it arrived an hour late and the rice and veggies were under-cooked! This was a business meal for guests.
I understand that everyone makes mistakes, how companies differentiate themselves is in how they respond to those mistakes. The order for the food was made with the owner. When it was 10 minutes past the time the food was supposed to arrive we called - oh yes, it will be there in ten minutes, ten minutes later we told them we could get food somewhere else in ten - oh we'll be right there was their response... when it was 45 minutes late we were told it was there... it wasn't! Then they said the driver was lost. It was lie after lie.
If they had told us originally they had forgotten the order and let us choose to get it from somewhere else or from them, they would still have credibility. If they had delivered delicious food that was above and beyond what we ordered they could have made it up to us. Maybe offered a bottle of wine?? No - the owner would not return the call the next day either.
Next time we will call O'Briens or Shangri-La, both of those companies operate with more integrity. -

Good menu, but food not very good. In the past food has been much better, very disappointed today.

Coming from SF, the food options are endless. Modesto isn't in the same ballpark, we agree. But during a family visit last weekend, I wanted to try something without the 'franchise' feel and wanted to give Appetez a shot.
Service: 1.5 out of 5 -- Really sweet waitress, friendly, but she'd have moments where she'd vanish. I noticed other guests arriving and had to wait minutes before getting greeted by anyone. The biggest no-no was the first impression. She brought our cold water mugs holding them by the inside of the cup with her fingers. I asked if she could bring new mugs for us and she brought the mugs out the same way! We passed on the water.
Food: Ordered crab cakes w/ corn salsa and coconut shrimp w/ chutney-based dipping sauce. The crab cakes looked unappetizing, flat, and not how I would expect in a restaurant setting. They looked like something out of an 'Intro to Cooking' course. Plus the 'corn salsa' that accompanies the crab cakes was hijacked by a lemon aioli -- disgusting. Not sure if this was an oversight by the waitress or if the menu changed, but when brought to her attention, she didn't have anything else to offer. The coconut shrimp itself was ehhh, nothing to write home about, but the chutney sauce was appetizing.
Main courses - Cheese Ravioli with artichokes & Salmon Salad. Again, very unimpressive. I'd be surprised if the ravioli's were made in-house; tasted like something bought from Costco. I did enjoy the white wine sauce with the artichokes and capers. The salmon salad was over-seasoned and wayyyyy to salty. It seemed as if they used a BBQ rub for the salmon since the Appetez/Buddy's BBQ kitchen are under the same roof.
Maybe our expectations were too high? But the service and food progressively lowered the bar for us. The decor and interior of the restaurant, website, menu all give good signals, but the food and service needs to catch up. -

MODESTOIDS SUFFER TENTICULOPHOBIA!
Todays lunch mission... check Yelp (check), close to work (check), good reviews & prices (check), iphone working (check), pants on (check)...I drive to another of many mini-strip malls that seem to infest Modesto like Alien pods & do a great job of hiding the good, the bad, and the pathetic.
I go in wondering if I am doing this more for me or you guys? Just kidding, I am damned hungry and they better have some damn good food.
This place is yet another food place hiding in plain sight
...I had been to this mini-mall a couple of times before, for the ever popular Root Canal therapy, at the other side of this mini-mall...and I guess that since my face was half paralyzed and I was gonked out on Nitrous...I hardly noticed this restaurant and just randomly guessed which woman was my wife in the waiting room. Thank god for me, I guessed the right one...because who else in the known multiverse would put up with me!
Well, I went into Appetez, and was impressed with the understated décor. The was nobody but me at 12:30 in the "lonely singles section", which was fine since I could have a partial view of the jogging path on Virginia Ave.. Nicole E (pleasant & nice) brought me a menu & plain H2O with a lemon wedge. I hungerly ordered the Calamari first & then the BlueCheeseburger (but with double beef). After playing with my iphone and overhearing the cackling of the Birthday group over the wall, my Calamari came....
I glared at my appetezer in frank disbelief...where's the squid? I want my Calamari to look like a bread deep fried hacked up sea-monster giant squid from the deep....like the one from 10,000 leagues under the sea but bigger and tastier...all giant tentacles and body rings! This was shear blasphemy and only then did I pull some Yelper's admonition from the fog that I vainly call a memory. I then remembered," beware of Calamari emasculation".
It appears that some MODESTOIDS suffer from a rare form of idiotpathic chronic intermittent TENTICULOPHOBIA!
DAMN IT, DAMN IT, AND DOUBLE DAMN IT!
OK, now that was out of my system, I now had no choice but to eat it. Not bad, good in fact...it was really sliced tender squid fillet seemingly sautéed in tons of garlic and oil...but not what I was expecting...damnit!
Then the Bluecheese Burger & fries came...where's the fries? Where I was expecting a heaping mass of coronary-artery-clogging fried-sticks, there was only maybe a paltry dozen sticks. They were nicely oily, spicey, and quite tasty...
Friend could you spare me a few dozen more...
they were much better than the overrated Surlas (but Surlas gave you more bland ones like McD's).
I then bit into the Big Burger with high hopes...good mouth feel, flavor, aroma, almost to the touchdown line, but wait...the texture was wrong. Oh no, it was well done....nope, no score, fumbled at the 5 yard line!
Still very tasty with a charcoal broiled coating on both patties (Surlas wins here on the medium rare beef, but losses on a tiny half-dollar sized Bluecheese bit on their version). Next time, I got to get them to do medium rare if I can, or try something else. Most of the lunch choices were $7-9 dollars and next door at their Sports Bar they have 1/2 BBQ chicken right from their own outside BBQ for only $8.
Despite all the grips, I did like this place for the follow reasons:
Not too pretentious, not too crowded, not too expensive (Appetez full stomach= $24 with tip, Surla's full= $35 with tip via (micro)Poke then BlueCheese (macro)Burger)
This place is also far game for catering to my workplace or getting a group over there...we are getting tired of BJ's....
Also a message to the MODESTOIDS who are TENTICULOPHOBIC...
GIVE ME TENTICULES OR GIVE ME DEATH! STOP YOUR REIN OF CULINARY TYRANNY ...OR...I AM GOING TO CRY & POST LOTS OF TENTACLE PICTURES ON YELP...SO THERE! HA! THAT WILL TEACH YOU!Listed in: GOOFY & WACKY REVIEWS!, Yelping Lunches

Strange...When I checked in my phone could only find Appetez and not Buddy's which is the bar connected Appetez. They use the same kitchen.
The bar is a neat little place that offers peanuts that you throw on the floor. Two flat screens with the game on made this a great place.
I ordered a margarita and the recommended rack of ribs dinner.
The margarita was well poured and a bargain at $5.00 (it might have been happy hour).
I was also impressed with the price of the rib dinner until I started eating it. By the third rib I was done. Dry and lacking any flavor. I'd ordered the fries with garlic and they were okay. The coleslaw was bland.
I'll come back to give it another try if for anything the atmosphere if the bar. -

Ok now here is another one for my A#1 list.
We went here last night for dinner. We been talking about it for a long time but just never did it. So last night we did.
The place inside is much bigger than you might think. One of their rooms holds 145 people and, another one holds 75 and that's not all there is still more room.
We were greeted at the door and promptly seated and water and drinks were served within 2 to 3 minutes. Now that's fast.
They have an extensive wine list with some very good reds. I had the house cab which was black oak and very good.
I ordered the Orrin Calamari which came with rice pilaf and a quarter piece of artichoke.
The Calamari was the best I have had in a very long time. Perfectly cooked, soft enough to cut with your finger if you wanted to, but, firm enough to not fall apart.
I'm not a fan of rice but this was superb. I ate all of it. Tender, moist and delish.
The artichoke? Well I love them so nuff said, I ate it. lol
Excellent place nice and cozy for dinner with that someone special.
Excellent service, and food.
Four thumbs up to the Chef.
One of the most enjoyable dinning experiences I've had this year.Listed in: My Favorite Places

I've been wanting to try Appetez ever since I first spied it when taking my canine companion to the doggie day spa (located in the same shopping center). After complaining about being in a restaurant rut, we decided to give Appetez a go.
We arrived in the early evening and were shown to a cute little private booth complete with curtain. I had a difficult time deciding what to order because they were out of what I wanted. I settled on the fish and chips. After taking the first bite, I was so happy that they were out of my first choice entree!
The fish was tilapia and was so lightly battered it was almost fluffy. I know, weird description for batter, but in this case it is true! The chips were also yummy. They were perfectly crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. (It seems "fluffy" is the word of the day.)
I ate way too much, but it was so delicious I couldn't help myself! I finally forced myself to stop gorging myself when faced with the possibility I would be too "fluffy" to fit into my clothes the next day! :) -

Hmm, congrats to urban r. for giving Appetez such an undeserved rating. Maybe he just got called up for jury duty and wanted to project his ire towards the impressive dining experience that is Appetez...
My girlfriend and I had our one-year anniversary dinner here. I e-mailed Appetez two weeks before inquiring about their private booths, and Sarah, their special events coordinator, was very helpful. She accommodated any requests I had, including planning a three-course meal beforehand, as well as candlelight and our own personalized music. Their menu varies, but if you are reserving a special event, they are more than willing to create dishes that cater to your specific tastes.
The restaurant, at least from the outside, is very unassuming, but the inside is pleasantly inviting, almost like you're eating somewhere in Napa. Our private booth, the "chardonnay room", was equally inviting, as it is curtained off from the rest of the restaurant, and consists of a plush wraparound booth, assorted pillows and dim lighting. There were some interesting nuances to the room as well; part of the wall is covered completely covered by wine corks, and there is a notebook where guests can write about their dining experience.
Okay, to the good stuff: the food was great. We had panko-breaded calamari with tartar sauce to start, and for our entrees we enjoyed fish and chips and their specialty bbq burger. The calamari was delicious, with just enough portioned to wet our appetites. My girlfriend and I agreed that the pollock was fried to perfection, and the seasoned crispy fries and 'slaw on the side were yummy. The bbq burger was on par with Red Robin's whiskey river burger, and that's some high praise from me.
Throughout the whole dinner, the service was excellent (thanks Sarah!). She accomplished the difficult task of being there, while not being there. Also, the atmosphere was quaint and romantic. So when a restaurant like Appetez offers great food, great service, AND a great atmosphere, it's an easy decision for me to make: FIVE stars to Appetez!! We'll be back again! -

Food is fair.
They charge too much for clubs to meet and eat there. -

Appetez has catered our BNI meetings for over three years. Each week they never fail to provide us with a good meal that is different then the last. For the price, many restaurants would provide the same thing or something simple. Appetez not only gives our chapter great service but a well decorated, clean room to meet in each week. I have also been the guest of events that Appetez has catered outside of the restaurant. Their service and food always meets and exceeds my expectations.
As a restaurant, Appetez has some of the best food in Modesto. I highly recommend that you at the very least grab lunch or dinner there. -

Visited a month ago. Late, midweek lunch = not busy. Bonus: service was attentive without hovering. Since I had a special occasion to celebrate, other yelp reviews made this the place to be... so I thought.
We had a private booth, but the iPod dock / stereo didn't work. Decor is more rustic / country / pastoral than I imagined. What did the yelper mean when he wrote he could imagine this place in Napa? Must be near the unpresumptuous Prager PortWorks & off the touristy path.
We were offered complimentary deviled eggs... ordered stuffed mushrooms, which I wanted to like more than I actually did. Hot Russian Tea was unique, and something I'd order again. Minnestrone soup du jour was decent; liked the eclectic bowl in which it was served. (Refer to photos)
Appetez still has daily specials in addition to the surprisingly diverse menu! I was compelled to try the stuffed rigatoni. Not exactly the type of pasta I've seen stuffed. Good choice w/ artichoke & cheese filling; sun-dried tomato & caper sauce. Generous portion for the price point.
Willing to return, but not for an extra special event. More like a reliable, casual neighborhood restaurant. Again staff was friendly. BONUS for dressing in costume during Halloween week. -

Wanted to try Appetaz after reading others reviews. Glad we did!
A friend and I came in for lunch on a Monday. First off, the staff is wonderful - described everything perfectly, were prompt and gracious.
When our drink order was delivered we were also given a small plate with a tiny bite of one of the available appetizers. A nice touch.
We both decided onthe same item -a croissant with roasted turkey, brie, apple, and honey. I had that day's soup special - roasted pepper and my friend chose the clam chowder. My soup was delicious and definitely freshly made. the plating was nice too - the soup came in a copper bowl. The clam chowder looked delicious and my friend finished every drop.
The turkey croissant was tasty and we were both happy with our choice.
No room for dessert this time but we will be back to try more of the menu next time we are in Modesto. It's good to have another unique independent restaurant in Modesto where chain and franchise dining establishments are so numerous. -

Gross. Dirty. Food is sometimes strange and amateurish, some of it is ok. Service is good. Weird entrance... need some serious redecorating, also in the banquet room and bar. Outside seating area and building overall needs some serious help. Feels like it wants to be an upper-crust eatery, but just not quite there.

Have been to this restaurant a few times and I have enjoyed each visit. The food is incredible, and you definitely get quality for the price. The menu changes every so often, but don't worry if you find something you like and then it is off the menu next time, you just ask your waitress and it will more than likely happen. The chefs are very creative and very accommodating to even the pickiest of orders. I'm tempted to go in one time and just ask for a surprise.
The kicker for me was when my lovely fiance reserved us one of their two booths for a romantic night out. Our booth was very romantic, with comfy cushions, extra pillows, and a book filled with stories written by previous diners as they ate in the booth. The best part of both booths is that they are curtained off so they become private rooms.
I haven't experienced their catering or banquet services, but I am looking at having my wedding reception here. If their food during dinner service is any hint, I think I would have very happy guests. -

Owner is very unprofessional. The night before our event we were informed that our event would be moved to a different room and there were additional service fees that we were unaware of. He was rude in his manner and also told us he was not making any money on our event. (well in that case we can take our business somewhere else.)
Food was good and waitress was very nice, but a little bit slow since there was only one waitress for 40 people. Although our event turned out very nice, dealing with him at the last minute was disappointing. -

I feel this place tries to be 'fancier' than it really is. The food is okay and the prices were not terrible, but the service is low class. It's like my g-ma used to say, "You cannot make a silk purse out of a sows ear." Meh, my rating is 2 stars.

Tom is one class act. I called from Portland to have food delivered to a friend hospitalized after a recent motorcycle accident. Tom answered the phone, though the restaurant was closed, made food and delivered it to on his day off! My friends said the food was amazing and the nurses iterated that it was the best food in town. Thank you, Tom, you made a tough situation a bit easier!

This is an excellent restaurant (especially for Modesto where people think chains like BJ's are "nice restaurants"). I actually came here with a friend for her work party - so there was a fixed menu. I had salmon with a lovely glaze on it. It was cooked perfectly. I tried my friend's steak, which was also perfect. We had really great service and everything tasted wonderful.

So my best friend and I stopped in here cuz we wanted to try something new and we were very pleasantly surprised at how good it was!! We both had a simple burger but it was absolutely delicious! The lunch menu had pretty limited choices so I do want to go back for dinner eventually! I also loved the atmosphere it was very nicely decorated, a little romantic but not to over the top, since I was on a date with my best friend :)

I feel like this one of Modesto's hidden treasures. My Husband and I have been coming here since they first opened several years ago and have never been disappointed. The food is always excellent and the service is as well. The price can't be beat for what you get. Prices are comparable to your common chain (Outback,Chili's, etc..) but the food is on a whole different level. Went last night for the special Valentine's Day 5 course menu and was blown away! I highly recommend this place.

I love this restaurant! You wouldn't know this place existed but my friends took me here for lunch one day and this place is a gem! Who would of thought...in Modesto? I love that they serve a sample of a different appetizer every time you come in. I love the service and every item on the menu is delicious. The specials keep it interesting. Love this place. They cater too! We have lunch catered by them sometimes.

Appetez is a new restaurant discovery for me! I just went there a few weeks ago with some friends and dined in one of the private booths. I loved that it had a curtain that you could close to make it even more private, your own fan (I love that you can control your temperature) and it looked like you could even turn the light off and light candles in the lantern sconces on the walls to make it more romantic.
We had an array of appetizers including; spinach artichoke dip with yummy won ton chips, and some sort of shrimp ceviche creation. I ordered the pork chops with orange glaze for my entree. It came with fresh veggies and mashed potatoes. The portions were right on, the veggies were perfectly cooked and the sauce on the pork chops was yummy. The only thing that was sub-par were the mashed potatoes which were a little bland. I mixed a little of the orange glaze in with them, though, and it helped give them some flavor. Overall, a great dinner, lovely ambiance, and creative menu. Will definitely be going back! -

Okay I want to let my fellow yelpers know that the restaurant has changed menus as they just opened buddy's next door. I have yet to actually try the new menu so while my previous reviews stand as a decent reference point for this restaurant they are no longer quite current. On a calamari(the appetizer not the entrees) note btw a fellow appetez fan recently went there and apparently they've changed said calamari a bit from what we were accustomed too and don't dig the change. Though they have a soup du jur occasionally called that's a creamy potato and pesto that is delicious.

After reading all the reviews we have been wanting to have dinner here. We arrived at 7:15pm main dining room had only one other couple. The two huge dining rooms had private Christmas parties going on. We had a very attentive server, Ryan, I was very impressed that when he introduced himself he also asked our names, then we we left he thanked us by names. Great service! I also liked that he made great recommendations and when he didn't know what was in the dish he went to kitchen to ask. They have the best clam chowder, creamy rich and full of clams that aren't too chewy wityh a faint bacon flavor. The steamed clams were delicious especially the sauce dipped in the sour dough baguette. Crab cakes excellent, fish and chips crisp and tasty. I had the stuffed rigatoni with capers and sun dried tomatoes which was just OK, We ended the evening with creme burlee, a thick rich vanilla bean creme with a perfect caramelized crust. I subtracted a star for the tall red head female server with an attitude.
