CANCELED - FLOODED OUT - Not sure how to do this - but the Appalachian Festival has been canceled for this weekend because of flooding.  Coney Island is flooded.

Yes, it is an excellent event and a great way to spend the weekend - down on the River - when it's not flooded.
    Great music.

Cincinnati's Appalachian Festival at Coney Island is a classic tradition and a very fun festival to attend. It's actually happening this weekend! It tends to be in May sometime each year.

With Cincinnati's heavy Appalachian heritage, this festival really can bring it home for some people. There are countless folk and traditional musical acts performing, lots of arts and crafts to participate in and buy, and other events such as stories and dance performances.

I've always enjoyed myself at the Appalachian Festival and often come home with lots of goodies and purchases from all of the booths. The music is quite enjoyable if you like that sort of music. I did a little shape note musical education in my teenage years and I really enjoy hearing the roots of this interesting musical notation system.

    Don't miss it!

I'm probably the wrong person to be reviewing it, I really am. I'm an ungrateful little bastard of a sixteen year old who doesn't appreciate the music, art and food (well, I can appreciate food) of the Appalachian heritage from which a good portion of my city descends from. However, my grandmother, who is a firm follower of any type of festival at Coney, is also computer illiterate, so my review of the whole darn festival is just gonna have to do.

Cincinnati comes from a long line of German and Irish immigrants. Therefore, we're known to drink. A lot. However, Cincinnatians are also very close to the folkiness of the Appalachians. The festival itself is a wonderful site: booths upon booths of buyable art decor, story tellers, dancers, singers, etc. The crowd, as explained in the first paragraph, is generally older (like my grandmother...), unless you count the visiting schoolchildren. That, like many children in Cincinnati, was my first taste of the Appalachian festival, and I was most excited about lunch and my proximity to the river...that hasn't really changed.

I'm giving this festival three stars, as it was, as yelp describes 3 stars, A-OK for me. I know that's it's probably not the best thing to turn my back on a beautiful cultural existence like Appalachian heritage, but I try, and I would hope that's what my alcoholic German and Irish ancestors would ask for.
