Here's the deal: I dropped my digital camera. Everything worked mechanically post-camera trauma, though the automatic lens cap thingy broke off. Enter Apollo Camera Repair. The guy took one look at my camera and said (a) Canon would never sell me the parts and (b) the repair would cost close to $200 (i.e., I should just buy a new camera.) Know what? I called Canon and got the parts for $17. Know what else? Took the parts and the camera to iCamera (also in Oakland) and got the thing repaired for $35. $52 vs. an entirely new camera? My choice was clear.
Allen is a genius! I bought a Canon Powershot SD750 for $399 from Best Buy, and THREE days after the 30-day return policy expired, my clumsy self drops it into an alcoholic beverage puddle at a bar. The camera would turn on afterward but the drink gave it streaks on the LCD and it wouldn't see through the lens (black display).
Allen took the thing apart, cleaned the LCD and repaired the lens for $110. Much better than wasting my entire $400!
The first time I got it back it was only half-working, but after giving him a call and explaining the problem he was very happy to take it back. Apparently he had neglected to clean the sticky alcohol from the lens in the front. I got it back a several days later as good as new!

5 stars no questions asked - when my dSLR was recently acting up I was told about this place and decided to check it out.
As other's mentioned, they know their stuff next to being nice.
When I dropped off my camera and telling what I experienced they took the time to explain how they will troubleshoot it. Depending on other findings I was quoted an estimate of $150 and about 5 to 10 business days to be repaired.
As they had to find out, there was some more serious stuff to be done to the camera then just my initial problem but still was only charged an additional 10 bucks to cover the replacement part (but no labor or other expenses) that they had to order.
Drop off your broken equipment here and you'll get it fixed with a smile and the knowledge that they take good care of your things.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!!
giving it 5 out of 5 x's ... giggle... MaXXXXXX

Haven't been there for years, but it used to be my ONLY camera repair shop. When you find a place this good you don't leave it. Ok, not my only camera repair shop, but one of my top three all-time favorites. One time I went there and they were unable to fix my problem, I don't even remember what the problem was, but yeah, they can only do so much you know?
Great shop. Intelligent motherfuckers working there. Goddamn mechanical genuises! *giggles inanely* How do they take apart all those tiny parts and tiny screws and get those cameras back to gether again? I don't know, but I love them for it.
I haven't been to this place since the early 1990s. I guess it shows how good they are since they are still open? 5 stars for sure, no doubt in my mind,

Love this little place! it's one of those great finds that's off the beaten path. I found Apollo through this site, it had gotten great reviews and I can see why.
I'd been debating about what to do with my broken digital camera, friends told me it wasn't worth fixing and to just buy a new one. I have to say, I HATE that mentality,"just throw it away if it doesn't work anymore!" One of the by-products of the voracious consumerism that goes on this country (I'm not completely innocent but don't get me started!)
I digress...
Allen did an excellent job with my camera, fixed it in less than 24 hours too. He charged me exactly what he said he would, $95 which is still cheaper than buying a new point-and-shoot. And friendly service to boot.

After having Apollo Camera Service recommended to me by an Oakland wedding photographer I was blown away by the speed, price and workmanship of this funky little shop just two blocks off the 12th Street BART stop. I've had my Nikon F3 nicely refurbished and just got a replacement LCD for my D40 after I accidentally crushed the bugger. In both cases I had my camera back in a week for $125. Allen kicks butt M-F 9-6 (510-891-9486).
