Like everyone else has mentioned, this place has cool stuff for kids.
What hasn't really been mentioned is trying to use this place as a gym. Depending on your free time schedule, early mornings (and I do mean early, people are waiting in the lot for them to open at 6:00am!) and late afternoons from about 4:00pm until about 7:00pm are a zoo. You can get your workout in at those times because the majority of the people are polite and know gym etiquette but it does get crowded (can you say "gym rats"). Because I have a lot of free time right now I've been trying to figure out when the best time to get in there to get a workout in without having to feel rushed or the need to pose in front of the mirrors or push ridiculous amounts of weight. Well if you get there at around 10:00am it's a lot quieter and the only people there are the graying panthers (you know the type, they look elderly and innocent and then proceed to lap your ass on the jogging track. Hah, you might be able to out run me old woman but I can push 2.5 more pounds than you on the bench press!). They do have kids summer programs during the day too but that usually affects the B-ball courts, pools, and ice arenas and doesn't impact the gym nearly as much.
So, this is a medium size gym with both free weights and the universal type equipment that is kept in good shape (I've yet to see a piece of equipment that is out of service out of my 5 or 6 visits). Hey, small steps in the right direction.
I like this place because it's pretty all encompassing. Pool with lap lanes, slide, kid's play area, and hot tub, Ice Arena, Gym with almost all the equipment that you can need, an overhead running track, basketball gym, volleyball, climbing wall, and studio (which isn't open unless there are classes)
It's neat that you can pay one fee and get into everything except the ice area. The prices are a little high, but not bad considering everything they have to offer. I do know that their monthly membership, like most gyms is astronomically high. If you don't go regularly I would suggest paying each time, or getting one of their visit punch cards which allow something like 20 visits for a reduced price. Then you can gauge if you're really committed to your New Year's Resolution or what have you.
If you go for the work out, the gym is usually pretty crowded and it's possible that you might have to wait for a bit for the equipment, but every time I've gone people aren't real snobby and usually only use the ellipticals and treadmills for the allotted "20 min time if there's a line" which is good enough to get a warm up to use the weights. Another plus is they have the anti-bacterial spray and paper towels so you can clean off stuff as you go along or before you go.
All in all, pretty fair.
Apex is the best of the "WestBroomVada" (thanks Col. Hector) recreation centers--at least in terms of the waterslides and free jungle gym. Although the slides at Derda's in Broomfield are pretty good, here, they actually let you use the tube slide with your kid. I am proud that my son doesn't have a meltdown when we splash out of the slide and flip upside down. I flail around until I find him submerged under me and then drag him up out of the water. I assume that tears and terror will be the consequence; but no, instead, he joyfully says: "Let's do that again!"
4 stars for the water recreation area on a very busy day in Spring Break 2008.
The life guards have hell of a job and seem very vigilant and courteous despite that. They rotate often.
I will complete this review later; gotta go.
Hands down, this is the best indoor "water park" on this side of town. The younger kids can wade and play in the center pool. Bigger kids can do the inner tube/pipe thing or try and navigate the rope ladder. I get to kick back and and read; the humidity is great for the skin, especially in the middle of winter.
Lawn chairs can be a premium commodity during busy times. Admission is reasonable even if you live outside of Arvada. On the down side, nobody likes the 20 minute "rest" periodically enforced by the lifeguards. Coolers are allowed in the pool lounge area
If you are starving and forgot to pack a lunch, a snack bar can be found upstairs. A couple doors down there is a "free" indoor playland (*think McDonalds but 10 times nicer). Its a great way to kill several hours with the kids for minimal expenditure.
We haven't used the rest of the facilities yet, but we use the pool fairly often. They have a lap pool, which I have yet to use (it's been years since I've done laps), as well as a kiddie pool with a play structure, indoor waterslides (sorry, from CA, still getting used to the "everything is indoor/ heated" thing) and hot tubs. My son used to be afraid of water/ swimming, and the 3" of water in the kiddie pool has cured him of that!
Speaking of kid's stuff, there is a free play area, as well as a 'daycare' system in case you need someone to watch your kids while you use the pool/ gym/ whatever. And, in case you need it, there is free wi-fi in the building, in case you need something to do while the kids are tearing the place apart.
Nice place but the life gaurds are snobby little Beeootchis that act as though they are on a hollywood walk way strutting thier stuff.
I can't say much for the rest of this rec center but the Ice Arena is my favorite in the area. This place is rarely crowded and they take good care of their ice. They have two full rinks which allows them to have more public skating time than most places. The skate sharpening is too expensive, but overall this is a very nice place.
