Since we're new to the city, we wanted to try out local places, where we can. This place came with decent recommendations so we thought we'd try it out.
We hit it on a Friday night. I thought it was going to be fairly busy, but it was a shockingly sparse crowd, with only one or two large parties mixed in. The building is cavernous, with a shlocky Mexi-bar decor (you know, pink walls, neon Mexican beer signs, etc.). The wait staff was friendly and our waitress even playfully ribbed me for continually sending her back and forth to fetch items that I kept forgetting to ask her to get the first time.
My Tex-Mex litmus test always seems to default to fajitas. I don't know why. It's about the most consistent thing you can get in a Tex-Mex restaurant, so one wouldn't think it would distinguish one place from another. Alas, we always get it. Ultimately, it's a test of what the kitchen has to offer: homemade tortillas? Check. Marinated steak and tenderly-cooked chicken? Check. Equal proportion of onions AND bell peppers? Check. Ample fixins? Eh...left something to be desired. In fact, we ordered another side of cheese, sour cream and guac. Multiple choice of beans? Check. Refried, charro, AND black beans; of which, we order the black, when it's an option.
Overall, these fajitas tasted as homemade as if I made them on my own grill. Nothing was burned or wasted, here.
I also litmus-test the house frozen margaritas. I'd skip them, if I were you. It had a distinctly foreign, candy-like flavor that had me nursing it extra slow, as I couldn't handle the sugar levels. I should be able to get through one good margarita by the time my meal arrives. I didn't finish mine until after we had paid the bill. Not a good sign.
Bottom line: I'll come back. But, next time, I want to try what I think are the hidden gems in this place: their more authentic Mex-Mex fare, which included Menudo.

Restaurant quite small and crowded, especially during lunch hour...very home cooked style mexican food if thats what you are looking for, but they have THE BEST QUESADILLAS!!!

After reading the reviews we decided it was time to try Aparicio's. We were sorely disappointed. The queso was velveeta which wasn't very appetizing. The carnitas tacos sounded great, but lacked flavor. The service was average.
Overall a big disappointment.
This seems in an odd location, just north of downtown Plano, but its worth trying. The inside is nice; large windows let you see outside landscaping. They also have a patio with fountains and a goldfish pond.
Great food. It has a good selection of typical Tex-Mex, Mexican dishes not on most menus in the area (e.g. naploitos and Mexican style tacos served with cilantro and lime), and also more unique style "mexican" dishes (e.g. chili relleno stuffed with portebllo mushrooms and covered in a basil sauce).
The mushroom relleno is worth trying. The chicken in the enchiladas tasted fresh and cooked in REAL broth. I recommend trying a cup of their CC Dip: guacamole, covered in queso blanco and sprinkled with queso. They had lots of desserts to try, but their entrees were too filling.
At first it was the small hole in the wall hidden from site Mexican house that had the best home cooked meal you could get. Then the world got out you could see a lunch line stretched around the small little house with people from every where, High School, Business Folk, College Students and families. Now that they have changed their location the only thing that has changed is their decor. The food still remains the same home cooked meal from the house though now you have more variety and more good food. The best part there is now a happy hour. I don't have much else to say beyond this is the best place to get a home cooked Mexican meal!
