In my opinion, Any Water Sports is a premier dive shop on many accounts. It's my go to place for gear, fills, and information.
Frank is THE MAN for all things technical - when my regs need attention or a piece of gear needs service he's the most knowledgeable tech I've met. Everything that I've had serviced at AWS has come back in pristine condition, regulators breathe silky smooth, as good as new.
Kevin, Laura and Ginny are well versed in all the gear they sell and are great at keeping the in-store experience moving along smoothly - filling tanks to proper pressure, and answering questions about their products.
The gear - need I say more, AWS has the best lineup of dive gear of any dive shop I've seen, period! From Scubapro, Atomic Aquatics, DUI, Halycon, Santi, BARE, Fourth Element and Highland. They carry great gear at reasonable prices and have the knowledge and care to back up it up with great after sales support.
I keep coming back. The service is great, the people are knowledgeable, they fill my tanks properly every time, and they carry the gear I want. -

The owner used to be my SCUBA instructor. He great with teaching and his classes were pretty darn enjoyable at SJSU. The store has a extensive collection of SCUBA gear.

Any Water Sports is THE dive shop to go to. Everyone in the shop is super friendly and helpful! First I started going there just for air fill (they give awesome fill by the way). After a few times, they already remember and know my name. Second, when I got there late to pick up my undergarment, Ginny still in the shop, let me in and insisted me trying it on (I've tried it on before placing the order). 3rd, sent my drysuit in for leak test. Found out it was the zipper area. They Aquaseal it up, free of charge, so I could get through the class on that weekend. They also rigged my long hose setup for me although hoses are my only purchase, bolt snaps, necklace, replacing hoses. This list can go on and on and on... I love AWS! :)

I've been here twice, and have had a great experience at Any Water Sports. The owner helped me last time I went, and she offered a lot of great advice on gear. I tried to get a bunch of gear online, but it's very confusing what all to get when you're new to the sport. Actually, their prices were also comparable to online.
This is a big shop, and they offer a good selection here. I ended up buying my dive computer, dive bag, replacement mouth piece for my reg and wetsuit there all for a great price. I also got a mask for my boyfriend that was the same price as online. The owner was very helpful and friendly, and she wasn't trying to sell me expensive things I don't need. In fact, she found me a really nice high quality wetsuit that was half off, since it was last year's model. I saved a lot of money on a simple dive bag as well rather than spending $100+ on a travel bag. I also didn't need to spend $1000+ on a dive computer, and ended up getting one that gave me all the basics I need for a reasonable price.
They are also a certified Scubapro service center, and brought in my Scubapro regulator I had bought online to get it checked out before my trip. The owner had her husband (he works the service department) check it out. He said it was in really great condition, didn't need servicing, replaced the mouthpiece, and hooked up the hoses to my BC all at no charge!
So the owners, the owner's son, and this one girl that works there have all been really great. There is a one sort of creepy looking kid that works there that weirds me out a bit, but everyone else has been super nice and very knowledgeable. I enjoyed watching their scuba trip videos. They also have organized group scuba trips, and are a great source of information on the hot spot destinations for diving.
They also offer scuba classes as well, and are a 5 star PADI Scuba Instruction center. My boyfriend did the class and pool work there, which he was really dreading and tried to get out of on multiple occasions, and he made it through the class still wanting to go with me! So kudos to AWS for getting him through the class!

Oh how I love this shop! The owners are so helpful and straight up good people who love diving, and want to see other people enjoy diving just as much.
Just heard they became a DUI retailer which is really fantastic news!
Regardless, if you are new to scuba or an experienced diver this is a very good place that will meet all your needs! -

Anywater Sports is the best dive shop I have EVER been in to. I have been diving for about 10 years and have over 700 dives so I know a bit about dive shops and the service they provide. I am a technical diver and need access to competent people who can fill trimix as well as simple Nitrox fills. This is the first and only one that I have ever been into that can fill my tanks while I wait. Yes, read that again, a trimix fill while you wait. Frank, the man in charge is a wizard at regulators and all my annual checks for ALL my gear goes to his shop.
Simply put there is no other dive shop around that can compete at the high standard that is provided here for technical divers. Now if they would just put in that espresso machine we would be in scuba heaven. -

I just had some equipment serviced and was very pleased with the price, the quality of the work and the speed. They overhauled an old (~20 years old) US Divers first and second stage as well as an octo and inspected a BC. The gear had been sitting for an embarrassingly long time, most of it in a shack by the ocean, and had some corrosion and the octo was free flowing. Turn around was under a week, what they said it would cost and they did an excellent job cleaning up the corrosion (cosmetic as well as functional).
The staff is knowledgeable, helpful and for the most part friendly. Not sure why people bag on Laura, she's never been rude to me, just efficient and competent.
They're my go-to shop and I'm looking forward to going back.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I just completed my open water certification with this store and it was very professional and fun. We got in some great dives in monterey for the ocean portion of the course.
After visiting two other stores tonight I returned to AWS to try and buy a wetsuit. The staff here immediately greeted me and helped me pick out seven different suits to try on. They also checked on me every couple minutes to see how the suits were working out. I ended up getting a 7mm Pinnacle Cruiser wetsuit which happened to be on clearance for $150. Great service, wide selection, and a good deal. I'll keep coming here for the rest of my gear.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I took the SCUBA course at San Jose State University and Any Water Sports was suggested as the place to go for all my diving needs. My instructor Frank, is also the owner of Any Water, not wanting to seem naive, I checked out a few other dive shops in the Bay Area to compare prices. Any Water Sports is by far the best in selection and price. I was helped by several different people and never felt pressure to buy anything more than what I needed. I got a lot of feedback about various equipment and felt confident in my purchases.
When it came time for my Open Water Certification I rented the rest of my gear from Any Water as well, including my tanks, weights, BCD, wet suit and hood. The place has a family free to it which I really like and which earns it a five star rating in my book. -
Review from Mansi A.
My friend and I took the Discover Scuba Diving Course through Any Water Sports. It was a fantastic introduction to scuba diving for people looking to find out what it's all about. The course was about 1.5 hours long, and taught at the indoor swimming pool at San Jose State University.
The instructors fitted us with fins and masks and taught us how to use the breathing devices to breathe underwater. Once we were comfortable enough to breathe on our own, we were given the opportunity to have fun and "scuba dive" around the pool.
The instructors were fantastic and extremely patient with all the beginners. They let us pick up the skills at our own pace, and never pushed us to do anything we were not comfortable doing. All in all, this was a great introductory class!
Time to consider whether I'd like to officially get certified... -

This is a great dive shop. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly, and will take the time to answer your questions. The prices are also much better than other stores, I have bought a LOT of stuff there over the last few years..
They do have a somewhat laissez-faire attitude so definitely ask a lot of questions and be prepared to spend some time in the store. -

This is a great dive shop for beginning divers. While they don't have a super huge selection of new gear, they do almost always have the rental equipment you need to have a safe and successful dive and enough gear that an entry level diver can gear up relatively inexpensively without getting distracted by super advanced gear. They do carry the nicer stuff, but the staff is good at directing you towards what you need versus what is 'the best'. The prices are comparable, and they even do price matching for authorized retailers (not online sales) as well as an old equipment exchange program.
All the staff is very helpful and friendly and has some degree of dive experience, and between them all, they'd probably used every piece of equipment they carry so they can give you really exact explanations of how it works and even offer suggestions based on their experiences with the equipment. They're all really patient too so you don't have to worry about feeling like a fish out of water with them. -

I have going to Anywater Sports for seven or eight years now. I have never taken any scuba diving courses there since they do not offer any courses to a PADI Master Instructor, who is already a certified technical diver. I have always found the staff to be friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Their staff is easy to interact with compared to some other shops like Diver Dan's, who have very pushy sales people, who make you feel like a seal getting attacked by an Orca. They have a great selection of gear with good service offered for doubles, oxygen cleaning, and other technical gear. Their equipment prices are competitive, and usually 10-20% less than Diver Dan's. As a scuba professional, I would recommend the store to any new diver as well as the experienced diver looking for a good selection of scuba gear.

I have been a customer of AWS for over a decade and go there for expert advice, friendly service, equipment repairs, fishing licenses advanced certifications and training. Always fair pricing, quality products and friendly service. They do get busy and sometimes you need to wait your turn. Fair is fair.
I have also been on many charter trips with AWS to the Channel Islands and Monterey when they operated two boats themselves, good people, good times, diving safety and enjoyment first.
Frank and Ginny Barry are hard working people who run a class operation.
I have been to many other dive shops and always feel they are trying to sell me something. At AWS i feel I get good advice about the equipment i own and what is suitable and a good value. My son has rented there many times and the equipment is always well maintained and modern. AWS treats me the way I want to be treated, as a valued customer who with the correct advice will return year after year. I have logged over 350 dives since Frank certified me, and traveled the Carribean and to Australia, most of my equipment and certainly all key components I buy exclusively at AWS.
Definately 5 well earned stars in my book. -

After shopping around on dive certification shops I decided on Any Water Sports. # 1, the cost is by far cheaper and # 2, the staff isn't full of themselves.
I first went to another local dive shop and was told that I needed the most expensive gear. At first I thought...hey..maybe they are right but within minutes another customer came in the door and was told the same thing! That was when I knew they were more interested in my cash than me so I went to Any Water Sports and Chris took his time and worked with me to finding me the best dive equipment (and it wasn't the most expensive).
I signed up for my class and loved every moment of it! Eric was our dive instructor and he was awesome. The guy really cares about you and will do whatever it takes to make you feel comfortable and man does he love to laugh!!! He had us laughing the entire time. Two other guys from the shop joined in the pool dive for extra help. Terry and Bruce. They were awesome and kept me calm...especially when my mask would fog over and over again underwater. If I made any mistakes we went over it until I got it.
The classes are small which is good. That allows you to get any extra help you may need. These guys really are passionate about diving and I am glad I got to learn for the three of them! What a memorable experience.
All the staff at Any Water Sports...including Dusty (the diving shop dog) is great and I will be recommending them to everyone! -

Well, apparently Any Water Sports is doing so well with all of your praise they no longer feel quality service or customer satisfaction is required. I have been a rescue diver for over 10 years and although I never thought I'd ever wish for SoCal again, my previous experiences in Orange County dive shops puts this place to shame!
I took the recommendation of a co-worker, a novice diver, and dropped off my tanks for a hydro and my reg set and dive computer for a checkup before the summer season. My paperwork clearly states that I specifically requested a new battery be put in my Oceanic Pro-Plus computer, as it had been sitting in my dive gear container for over a year. A week later I picked up my gear, paid the $65 dollars (on top of the $100 I already paid for the hydro and fill) and was happily on my way.
When I got home (30 miles away) and checked over my gear before repacking it, I noticed my computer was not activating when prompted. I removed the battery (dated 06 00) and checked it on my volt/ohm meter and it read 0.00VDC! That is about as dead as a battery gets folks and they didn't even notice despite my request for them to replace it. FINE! Unhappy and frustrated, I figured I'd just drop by the shop on Monday and have them finish what I asked them to do...
When I went back in on Monday, I dealt with a second rate clerk named Correy, who seemed wholly disinterested in the fact their lack of detail has now created an inconvenience for me and brought their competence as a service center into serious question. He offered the meager defense that he guessed it "was overlooked". No kidding! Retrieving a "new" battery from the stock shelf in the back he tells me it is $22.50. You're kidding right? I know for a fact, because I looked it up online when I first discovered it hadn't been replaced as I requested, these Tadiran TL-250 1/2AA 3.6V lithium batteries are available from several retailers for under $6.00 each. I said to him, do I at least get a discount for having to come all the way back here to fix your oversight? His answer, was that he wasn't "making much on batteries", which as I have demonstrated is crap but in otherwords implying... No.
So, already 3 days longer into this service than I wanted to be, I didn't want to wait longer for a battery if I ordered it myself so I just agreed and paid their extortion. As I did, I told Correy directly that this sale was going to cost them all my return business from here on out. He said he was sorry to hear that, but I contend that if he truly WAS sorry, he would have been appalled that they had missed the battery change to begin with and asking me from the start how they could make this right with me!
NOW, for the frosting on this cake... I get home (again a 30 mile drive) and place the "new" $22.50 battery I have just purchased in my computer and start it through it's calibration sequence. Upon completion, the computer display goes blank and the "Low Batt" indicator is flashing! I try again, same result. Removing the "new" battery, I check IT on the volt/ohm meter and it has a nominal voltage of 1.76 volts! After all that, to add insult to injury, they sold me a bad worn out battery!
I'm finding a new dive shop for all my future needs and recommending everyone I encounter who shops there or is even thinking about it to do the same! -

Looked at several shops in the valley. Some where outright rude, others run down. Any Water felt just right! Warm greetings and staff. They understand that a new diver is a long term prospect and not simply a matter of getting as much money as fast as they can. That's how you build customer loyalty! No upsell whatsoever and great personal service (Thanks Jenny & Laura).
Took the open water cert class. Really appreciated the smaller class size and personal attention. You can tell that the instructor (Eric) is not just doing this to make a quick buck. Very patient with all skill levels and made sure everyone succeeded in each task.
The caliber of instruction became even more apparent in the open water portion where other instructors were literally yelling at their students to get a task done right!
Now that I've done the basics, need to start looking at some gear and am intrigued by some of the other courses. Wonder which shop should I go to first? First impressions last a long time...
Thanks! -

We walked into the store, not knowing exactly what we were looking for. We were asked to purchase a pair of fins for my cousin who lives outside US. We know his size, we brought his booties, but we didn't know how it should fit in the fin. A girl named Laura or Lora was sooooo helpful, very knowledgable. Never made us feel stupid for not knowing exactly what to look for. She was very patient with us and we didn't feel pushed into buying the most expensive brand. She went with the style that was close to the picture we brought. And not very expensive even. She asked us very important questions that we considered before buying. We came back few days after to purchase the fins because we were very impressed with her.

I highly, highly recommend Any Water Sports in San Jose. I can't say enough good things about both their staff and the teacher who gave us the class, Sue.
My buddy for life and I decided to take the PADI Open Water class in view of a trip to Belize which we had booked. I'd never even thought of learning how to scuba dive. I am a very good swimmer and the idea of putting on all that stuff on me did not sound too attractive. But it had been something my buddy had always wanted to do and I thought "ok, why not?". We signed up for Sue's class through Any Water Sports in October hoping to quickly do the training before sea conditions in Monterey became too unpredictable. Our first class was on a Friday evening and I remembered that I had had a hard tiring week and I was not too enchanted at the idea of sitting through a long evening class. But as we arrived at the store we had a very warm welcome from all the staff, there were chocolates on the table. Sue gave us a very dynamic presentation, highlighting the most important parts of the book we had just studied, putting things into perspective and telling us lots of interesting stories drawn from her experience.
We also bought our fins, bootties, snorkels, masks etc and tried on wetsuits in preparation for the next day's class at San Jose State pool. Chris helped us navigate this new world with very helpful and professional advice. There was no superficial meaningless "hello, how are uuuuu" like in many other stores here. Chris was focused on helping us picking the right gear for us and giving us some time to try things and reflect on the options. I was faced by a sea of masks with no idea what I should get. He explained to us how to pick a mask that would fit and explained why some were pricier than the others. Then he helped us with the fins, and the booties, and the gloves, etc. Ginny and Sue also spent quite a bit of time checking the fit of my wetsuit and trying to figure out whether I'd be warm enough in Monterey because I have a tendency to get cold.
The first pool day went quite well. Sue is an amazing teacher. She communicates her ease and confidence in the water. As soon as we were in the water, as I watched her show us how to clear our masks I understood that it would be very simple: I'd just have to watch and repeat. As she was showing us how to do this somewhat challenging task in the water, just with the eyes and attitude, it felt as though this was an easy thing to do, you just had to do exactly what she did the way she did. And it was very convincing. I was able to clear my mask right away. I found her incredibly motivating. Frank also helped me out a lot during the course with my weights and buoyancy (tricky business for a beginner!). He even took a picture of us which ended up on the Any Water home page for a while!
I am a very confident swimmer and I can hold my breath under water for quite some time when I am in a pool so I never thought I'd ever want to wear even a mask and snorkel so all this was a very new and uncomfortable thing to me. I did not sleep very well that night probably because I was a bit apprehensive about the rest of the training and what could happen if you went up to the surface too fast. When I got to the class on the next day, it just felt as though I was not in the right place. I was highly motivated but exhausted. I passed the written test almost faultlessly because Sue's class was still very fresh in my mind. But I was very sad and frustrated because I could not put together my scuba tank and bcd by myself. That made me realize that I was just too tired to continue. I knew that it meant we both had to drop out, we'd not be able to make it to the ocean session the following weekend and then who knows when we would be able to find a suitable time to take the training again and we'd would not be able to scuba dive in Belize.
Sue was very reassuring. She immediately told me not to worry and said that she would find a way for us to finish the training in time for Belize. Despite her extremely busy schedule, a few weeks later, our pool session got rescheduled. She took time from her weekend to give us basically a private lesson. It was so much fun and it was easy. The following week, she again took time from her weekend to take us to the ocean to complete the training. Ginny supported all of this by making equipment available. Ginny also talked to me and my buddy about what it was like to be nervous about diving and how various mental concerns could get in the way. Meanwhile Chris and Laura kept encouraging us whenever we visited the store. Laura was always very friendly and helpful. She even tried to speak French to me as this is my mother language and she is has studied French. I'm still amazed at how the whole Any Water team worked so hard to help us get our certification. They are clearly all very passionate about their work. All in all, Any Water Sports feels like joining a new community of friends. -
Review from N. H.
Stanford, CA
This store has provided the best customer service I have experienced from any retail store in my experience of over 20 years of being a rather picky consumer.
My initial experience with Any Water was two years ago when I was looking for snorkelling equipment because I was going to be near the Red Sea and wanted to snorkel. I needed prescription goggles because my eyes are bad enough that it wasn't worth snorkelling without them. I called around a couple of stores and only Any Water struck me as being both helpful and professional. That is to say that I did *not* feel as though I was just getting cheery California customer service without any substantive expertise to back it. That impression was confirmed when I went in to the store. They carefully explained the process of getting prescription goggles. A young man--whose name I forget since it has been two years--talked me carefully through the choice of a pair of goggles. He explained to me how to test whether it was a good fit. All with no condescension--just good, friendly, professional care and attention. He told me to go home and try it in my swimming pool at home to see if the fit was perfect before I had the lenses modified. Once I had tested the goggles, I took them back to the store to have them sent out for modification. Of course, because I had started the process so late, I was leaving town way before their normal turn around time (I'm a good planner most of the time, but life's busy). They carefully took down the date when I was leaving town and said they would try their best to pull it off. And they did. They kept calling whoever was getting the lenses done and kept me informed all through the process so that I got to pick up my prescription goggles the afternoon before the morning of my flight. I was very impressed.
So it is no surprise that when I eventually wanted to get my SCUBA certification in October I got in touch with Any Water. I still wasn't quite sure about whether I wanted to do it so they immediately arranged a Discovery Scuba dive in the San Jose state swimming pool (where they hold the swimming pool part of the course) with one of their Dive Masters, Terry Martin. After some initial instruction, I got to swim around in the pool with SCUBA gear. Terry was very friendly and helpful.
That inspired me to go ahead and sign up for a class. When I went in to purchase my basic equipment from the store (fins, boots, gloves), Chris was very helpful. He did not at all push the expensive equipment on us--as has often been my experience in other parts of the retail industry--but rather carefully asked me questions about how much swimming I had done, what kind of kick I had, etc., went through the pros and cons of the various pieces of equipment all while remaining, how shall I put it, very objective and professional. No smarmy salesmanship--just, again, careful, helpful, attentive advice. I did go for the cheaper fins (given Chris's advice I knew exactly what I was getting in for). In the end I wasn't satisfied with them because my legs were just not strong enough to handle plastic fins and I don't have a proper enough kick for them. I went back and upgraded without a problem.
Our class was taught by Sue. I can't say enough positive things about her abilities as an instructor. She is extremely helpful, careful, and thoughtful. Like Terry, Sue has another professional career. These are very smart, successful people who happen to also like diving. That kind of friendly but serious professionalism is shared by Ginny who seems to run the place with Frank her husband (I believe they may own the place, but I'm not sure).
I had serious problems learning how to clear my mask--a problem many beginners have--but Sue worked patiently with me to make sure I finally got it--including managing to do it 30 feet down in open water in Monterey! She is amazingly friendly and helpful. But that doesn't mean that safety isn't paramount. She will tell you clearly and forcefully when you're doing something dangerous (usually anything that leads to coming up too fast). I am a professor now, and had a past life doing computer consulting, so I think I know exceptional pedagogy when I see it and Sue is without doubt quite exceptional.
Back at the store, Ginny, Chris, and Laura were very helpful in arranging the rental equipment for the classes (included with the price of the course). They always know who you are. They are amazingly efficient and carefully explain how everything works. It really feels as though they are watching out for you. They are always welcoming and very friendly (though, again, to my endless relief, not in that cloying, fake, second-hand car dealer kind of way). All of them actually love diving and so their advice is motivated by genuine interest and concern.
Thanks to all of them I just got my SCUBA certification last weekend! I am most grateful.
I recommend Any Water in the strongest terms possible
