Yelp has got it right - Anton's Movers is as good as it gets!
When I was looking to move, I called at least 20 different moving companies ranging from Gentle Giants to the no-name local laborer. Out of all those calls, Anton's Movers were the greatest choice all around.
Their price is competitive to beat out those no-name craigslist laborers, but they were professional and friendly enough on the phone that they actually made me want to do business with them (I couldn't believe how many people were rude to me on the phone when I was calling for a quote).
On the day of my move, I ran into the usual issue - my rental truck wouldn't start. Anton's movers were patient with me and did not charge me the 1-hour wait time it took for U Haul Roadside Assistance to reach me. After I got the truck going, we agreed to meet at the new home and they even made it there before me!
They cleared out my full 14-foot truck of various boxes and furniture pieces within 1 hour. They did not damage my furniture and was courteous throughout our entire interaction.
I will definitely use them again for my next move.Comment from Anton D. of Anton's Movers 1/27/2012

This company set a new record for us in paying to feel abused....
First, the good points:
+ The pair of movers that showed up were HARD workers, and very friendly through what was probably a long ordeal for them as well.
+ We did not note any damage to our items after the move.
Now, here are just some of the issues we had:
- We had to DESTROY OUR COUCH:
--- My wife discussed their window-hoisting services when booking the move, mentioning that the couch was too big to fit through the narrow halls. Despite this, the movers were surprised by the expectation to hoist the couch, telling her that they had no hoisting system other than themselves [and could not lower the couch out the windows]*! In the end, they could not move the couch and (in order to empty the apartment before our lease ran out) had to use our neighbor's tools to chop it up and leave the pieces on the curb.
- They took more than TWICE AS LONG as estimated:
--- Despite the company previously collecting details on the size and contents of our apartment (and being warned about the massive amount of books we had), the movers said they didn't realize we had so many items and they should've brought a bigger truck. Thus, they needed to make two trips and didn't finish until well after midnight!
- They charged almost TWICE AS MUCH as estimated:
--- Though they were the ones that brought the wrong equipment, we were the ones that had to pay, as we were then charged [by the owner]* for the time it took to come back and load/unload a second time! We fought [with him]* to get $100 knocked off the doubling in price, but otherwise paid for the company's inability to fulfill the terms of our contract!
In short, I REALLY wish we paid the extra money up front for more well-known movers; it probably would have ended up being cheaper in the long run and saved us a lot of headaches!
(NOTE: Event occurred Oct 2009; delay in review due to joining Yelp only recently.)
*[Details added in response to owner's comment: As noted, I only included some issues for the sake of brevity. To clarify: we WERE in contact with the owner several times throughout the day, our first call being made 30-45 minutes after the movers failed to arrive at the appointed time and we did not receive a courtesy call (they ended up being over 3 hours late, reportedly due to a broken-down truck).]Comment from Anton D. of Anton's Movers 12/11/2011

Anton's helped me move yesterday and they were really fast, efficient, and resourceful. I was really nervous to have my house filled with big, brawny Russian men (as the friend who recommended this company to me described them), but as it turns out the two gentlemen (Anton and another young man whose name I did not catch) were extremely polite, friendly, and so helpful! I didn't have too much stuff (one bedroom and one living room's worth of possessions) but they had everything out of my old apartment and into the new in under three hours, including the driving time. They were great about asking where I wanted things to go and very gentle with my things. One highlight that stands out in my mind is that my queen-sized bed would not fit up the stairs, so one guy climbed over a fence with my boxspring and lifted it up onto my second-floor porch--talk about dedication!
I will definitely use this company again and will be recommending them to all my friends as well. Thanks for making my moving day stress-free! -

Anton's movers is a GREAT moving company. Honestly, they were fast, efficient, and careful. And the prices are totally reasonable. We had no issues. The two guys that helped us were super friendly.
The fact that there are bad reviews blows my mind. We are moving again in a few months and my mom and I will definitely be using them. Highly reccomend! -

We used Anton's again after having such a good experience the first time. while they still did a great job the second time around (came on time, worked super fast, charged a great price), they totally scratched up one of my pieces of furniture. the top of my bedside table had scratches all over the top of it, which the movers didn't take responsibility for. i guess you get what you pay for.

Anton's Movers was the best decision I ever made.
I originally had a move date of August 1st, but when it got moved up a week, Anton's was available.
They brought a 16-foot truck for my 2bed2bath, and managed to fit everything in (a small miracle). I imagine that they play tetris at a pro level when they're not hauling furniture.
Not a single thing was broken, scratched, or damaged. They were quick and professional and very friendly-- even when they discovered that I had packed my keys (genius move, I know) they quickly adapted and rolled with the situation to help me get them out asap.
To move my entire apartment from Needham MA to Somerville MA it cost me only $400. -

Spasibo, Anton!! For saving our backs, for saving our sanity, for saving our relationship (there would have been blood if the Lady Friend and I had had to do this ourselves).
Booked for September 2nd, after the storm. Got the discount rate for scheduling for after the first of the month, AND another discount for having them do two moves back to back (well, two separate apartments into one new one), bringing the price down to $70/hour for two movers, the truck, the insurance, the whole kit and caboodle.
Our two movers were magicians - "for our next trick, we will make this wall of boxes disappear from your apartment and reappear tightly packed on the truck. And for our next trick, we will redistribute them in your apartment before you can recite the alphabet". On to the Lady Friend's apartment - wash, rinse, repeat.
All together took 6 hours, not even, breaking down two apartments flung across town(s) and then piled into our new little shack of sin, without a single banged or dinged piece of furniture, lost box, or complaint. We salute you Anton's, and will toss shot glasses on the floor in your honor.
(Only minor quibble is the a certain lack of pro-active, or any-active, communication after scheduling they move. We did have to reschedule once, and this caused much hand wringing and worrying and headaches, but the change went through, and everything worked out in the end) -

Bob Villa I am not. Hell, I'm not even Lucille Ball....so I hired movers. That's what we do in the city. I've never moved more easily in my LIFE. I sent them a thank you card the next day.
They packed like my move was a National Tetris Competition.
I moved on a Monday and they gave me a window of time for arrival, showing up exactly in the middle of that window....ok with me. I moved from a one bed in Southie to a one bed in Cambridge. Very little stuff and everything was in labeled boxes. That's right, I'm type A.
2 hours.....from "Hello" to my hug goodbye (I'm a hugger. Try it....everyone needs a cuddle). 2 hrs including travel, kitchen table take down/set up, awkward chatting and all. They were polite, called me ma'am and, as a single 20 something lady, I didn't feel weird at all. Total cost for 2 guys, a big truck (no idea what size, again...Bob Villa I am not) and the minimum charge for time= $270. More including tip. Not bad and worth every penny!
2 thumbs and a couple really great bear hugs up for these guys! -

Utmost professionalism and speedy, speedy! The two gentlemen who came by weren't chatty kathy's by any means which was fine by me, but they were all business and made my move from cambridge to the back bay as easy as possible. I had lots of fragile pieces which they handled with care. They even maneuvered around the aggravating parking situation around my new place.
And they were a lot cheaper than some of the other options I considered. For $85 an hour, I'll be calling them for the next move! -

Review from Lisa B.
Do not use Anton's Movers!!!!!
Pros:
1. They showed up on time (10AM).
2. The guys seemed nice enough.
Cons:
1. It took them 6 1/2 hours (!!!!!) to move my 300 sq ft apartment to a building 2 miles down the street.
2. I was quoted 3 hours for the move, meaning that I ended up paying OVER DOUBLE the estimated amount (and that's even before tip.)
3. The movers showed up in a U-Haul... Yes, a U-Haul. Very (un)professional
4. The movers took a a 30 minute break 2 hours into the move. And I paid for it. Really??
5. The box spring didn't make it to my new apartment and I had to ask(!) where it was and why it wasn't there.
Bottom-line:
Anton's Movers is extremely unprofessional and I am horrified by how much it cost me to move/how long it took. If I had a 2 bedroom apartment, okay. But I had a (perfectly packed) tiny apartment with an elevator in my old apartment. At one point, I started moving things into the hall myself because, apparently, a 100 lb girl is faster than 2 men.
The anger I feel about this situation has not diminished in a week, so I feel compelled to write this review. When I called to complain and receive an explanation, I was told that it was because "one of my apartments didn't have an elevator." Odd since the long-distance moving company I used to move to Boston only took 2 hours to move the same number of items.
While a little bit of extra-time to move is expected, this was an egregious case of misrepresentation and unprofessionalism. Do NOT use this company. -
Review from Megan H.
New York, NY
Almost a year ago I moved from Boston to New York. A couple of friends had used Anton's for local moves and were happy with the price and after calling several places, they had the best price for my NYC move.
Day of the move, Anton's arrives EARLY (just before 6am) and were out of my first floor Brookline apartment by 8am. We were all arrived in New York around noon and they started hauling all of my stuff to my third floor walk up on the Upper West Side. They were work horses getting everything into my much smaller NYC digs.
When I got my initial quote, they underestimated how many boxes I would have and pointed this out so I was expecting to be charged more than originally quoted. No problem, that was fair. When it came time to settling the bill they charge me what I had be quoted (and it was a non binding agreement).
Definitely recommend them for the Boston to NYC move! Price is more than fair and the work ethic is outstanding. -

Ive used them twice. On-time, hard working and very careful with my belongings. I recommend asking for three movers over two when your move is on the larger side (2bdrm+) as my move was less expensive the second time when I asked for three movers. Very competitively priced for a professional mover.

Is moving fun? No, never, but with Antons mover it is as pleasant as possible.
These guys were AMAZING! So friendly, so good, so efficient. I was floored.
Rudy was great from the get-go during the scheduling process. Then, due to inclement weather on our scheduled move date, he squeezed us in at the end of the day we called to ensure we moved during dry weather that weekend. By the time they arrived, they had already worked 11 hrs. However, you wouldn't have known it had they not mentioned it in conversation. They were upbeat, funny and still very fast and strong. They really knew their stuff and didn't mess around.
Having moved several times, I can certainly tell you these guys are amongst the best in the business and I will recommend them profusely every chance I get.
Rudy, if you are reading this...THANK YOU! -
Review from Guinness G.

Extremely poor experience with this company!
Not only was the service provided not as advertised on the website or as described to me in arranging my move, the movers sent were extremely unprofessional and unhelpful.
For example, I provided a detailed listing of my possessions that was used to generate a price quote. The estimate time provided was five hours. However, the movers actually took twice that amount. Therefore I paid nearly double of what was expected. While I understand that estimates are approximate, I have a hard time believing that I received a good faith estimate considering that I provided a complete listing of possessions and the estimate was not even close to the actual time. It would have been cheaper for me to move from Boston to NYC.
Further, the service received was very poor and unprofessional. For instance, I was scheduled to be moved by a team of three workers at 9:00 AM; however, only two movers arrived on time. These movers did not commence moving until the third gentleman arrived. Therefore, I paid for another's tardiness.
The movers took an extraordinary amount of breaks, often sitting around or smoking between trips for items. Further, they took a lunch break. I understand that moving is laborious and that breaks are needed; however, these costs are not to be passed to the customer. I expressed my concern about the breaks and was assured that the movers were not adding this time onto my final billable amount. On the contrary, the movers did not keep track of this time and simply removed one hour from my bill. This amount is wholly inadequate
Furthermore, while taking one of their numerous breaks, the movers left my new televisions and numerous boxes unattended on the sidewalk. I was fortunate to step outside at the moment that a passerby began going through my boxes!!! Who knows what may have gone missing if I didn't catch that, and how long my posessions were going unattended for.
Also, after the movers loaded a coffee table onto their truck and drove it to my new home, I was informed that they would not be able to get it into the house because it was too heavy. The movers simply took the item off the truck and said that they would leave it in the street for me to deal with. Clearly, I was not paying what proved to be an exorbitant sum, to conduct the move myself.
Additionally, the movers took a substantial amount of time insisting that each item of furniture needed to be "professionally wrapped." Despite this, I later discovered that several of my furnishings have been chipped and gouged on the sides.
Be a kind person I also offered the movers snacks which they did not eat but subsequently took an entire box of granola bars and a pint of dried cranberries, and a roll of paper towel with them as they left!!! They were kind enough to leave all of thier garbage and empty bottles strewn about my apartment though.
I am entirely unsatisfied with the service provided to me by these movers. I contacted them to rectify the situation and was not even given a response back.

My husband and I have used Anton's Movers twice. The first time they were fine. The second time, moving the same stuff with few additions (it was only 2 years later), they were lazy, complained throughout the day, and took 11 hours! Last time, the move took 8 hours. Both times included a stop at our storage unit.
I will not use them again, and would not recommend them to anyone. It's not worth the relatively cheaper price.
Some highlights:
They took a 40-minute lunch break two hours into the move, and then several breaks throughout the day. We lost count.
One of the three movers only moved 5-7 boxes or pieces of furniture the entire day. His job seemed to be organizing the truck - not necessary when we were bringing boxes and materials into our new place, but he did not leave the truck often even then.
They broke one of our dining room chairs, and after showing it to me broken, told me that it was an old chair and would have broken anyway.
They were unable to get our two dressers up the staircase in our new place. They did not offer to try to use pulleys, and frankly it looked as if both would have fit but by this time they were tired and two of the three guys were quite scrawny. We ended up putting the nice dressers in our basement and buying cheap dressers from IKEA.
Eventually, my husband ended up bringing boxes in as they were often stopping for smoke breaks or "reorganizing" the truck (even when we were at the final destination and things just needed to come inside.
Throughout the day, which was a high of 80 degrees and partly cloudy - perfect moving weather, they admitted - they complained about everything... we didn't have enough tape for them, the dining room table was heavy, we had too many things, etc., etc. -

I will not use them again.
They were almost on time, two young guys; the one who spoke English was a jerk, the only-Russian was nice but relied on his jerk friend to translate. It seemed good enough, they moved quick, got all my stuff in one truck, but at my new house there was a lot of lounging. I really didn't mind too much, except that I was paying by the hour and was anxious to get done with the awful process.
At my wit's end I watched, and WISHED I had video'ed for other patrons, as the young Russian kid slammed my white couch repeatedly against my new door frame to my living room. I couldn't speak I was so horrified.
The other one comes after me with the papers to sign and say "no liable damage"... why did I not wait and review my stuff???? The couch was ripped, black hand-prints all over it, even though I had wrapped it! The door frame was busted. So upsetting. Worked hard, but they need to learn some respect and training. I tipped way too much. -

A friend of mine recommended Anton's and after reading the reviews, my husband and I were skeptical.
That said, I have used over a handful of movers in the past, and of them Anton's was by far the best. What qualifies as good moving service to me is fast, efficient, and careful.
The last time I moved from Boston to Watertown (about 6 miles and two furnished rooms) - it cost me close to $1000 in total. This time I moved over 26 miles and about 4 furnished rooms and it cost me $500 in total!! It took half the time and cost me half the money! Literally, HALF!!! The last time we moved I think I paid a few hundred in supplies alone (tape and boxes); and then they spent about 2 hours incessantly wrapping EVERYTHING! Seriously ?!? We weren't moving priceless heirlooms here! My apartment isn't a museum - and my belongings aren't ancient artifacts - so, I don't need, nor do I want everything triple wrapped and vacuum sealed. I'll take half the price any day of the week. That said, EVERYTHING made it to our new home intact! Also, I should add, we have a ridiculously HUGE one piece sofa that the previous movers took about two hours to get up the stairs while scratching the walls on their way up. Right when the two guys from Anton's came up, they looked at the sofa and decided to tackle that first. I thought I would take the garbage out the back while they were fighting with the monstrosity of a sofa we have and make it back in time to see them attempt to bring it down the stairs. Literally, as I brought the garbage out to the curb, I saw them coming out the front door. I've moved this sofa 4 times - each time it included an elevator (with the exception of this apartment) - and, I've NEVER seen anyone get it out as fast as these guy did.
This was by far the easiest moving experience I've ever had. -

I've used Anton's Movers twice and I love them. Yes, they're cheap, but they're conscientious, they show up on time, and they do what they're supposed to do. They're all super-friendly, although my experience has been that only one person out of a two- or three-person team will be really comfortable in English. (I speak Russian, sort of, so this works out fine for me.) I found them through a chain of recommendations - a friend used them ("Your grandmother was Ukrainian? So was mine!") because a neighbor of hers recommended them ("your boyfriend has left you? You will find better boyfriend! We will move you out of this bad boyfriend apartment!") and everyone's been really happy with them.

These guys have a great little local moving company! They have moved me 3 times and I've referred them to various friends, all singing their praises. It's a family run business, and they work their arses off to move you fast and efficiently, no matter what the condition is. It's actually unbelievable that nothing phases these warriors. My last move was from a first floor apt to a 5th floor walk up, and they banged it out super fast up and down 64 steps with pleasant demeanors and an even an occassional smile. They charge a fraction of the cost of other moving companies and have superhuman strength! Don't mess with "a man with a van" or an overpriced corporate mover, use Anton's coz they rock.

Marblehead, MA
I am SO HAPPY I decided to go with Anton's. I was debating a number of moving companies, most were more expensive, some were less expensive but did not have websites or reviews on Yelp. The mixed reviews made me nervous about Anton's, but I eventually decided that most people only review when they are really happy or really upset with an experience, and moving companies probably get more of a hard time than other kinds of companies. I was moving a small first-floor studio apartment in Newton to a one-bedroom in Marblehead (about a 40 minute drive north). I was scheduled for a move between 5pm and 7pm, and they were early! They didn't charge me for the time they waited in my driveway, and once I arrived, they had my ENTIRE apartment packed in their truck, complete with padding, strapping, and securing all my belongings, in THIRTY MINUTES. I couldn't believe it. I was planning on cleaning my apartment while they were moving, and I was scrambling to keep up with them! My new apartment was on the second floor of an old building with narrow doorways and they maneuvered my sleeper couch through the doorway with no problem. They were fast, efficient, and didn't stop once to take a break. The whole move took 2.5 hours, plus travel time, came out to 3.75 hours. $288, compared to what I would have paid to do-it-myself ($150 + gas for the truck alone, nevermind the friends I would have had to bribe to help) was so worth it. Thanks Anton and Tony!

WORST MOVE EVER!!! IF I COULD GIVE 0 STARS I WOULD!!! The 2 movers (who were about 120 lbs a piece) were 2 hours late, broke my dresser, and when i asked to speak to their manager, their manager YELLED at me on the phone (i mean SCREAMED!!!) and hung up. These were the worst, most difficult movers ever!. I would NEVER recommend them! So rude, even though i made every attempt to be kind. PLUS moving a studio apt should not talk a little under FOUR hours!!!

Picture 2 Russian guys with a truck, in the pouring rain. Unfortuately, that was the weather the day we moved. Having used professional movers several times in the past for long distance moves, I must say that I was a little surprised by how "low frills" Antons is. There's nobody tagging all your items and making sure they all are accounted for. And some of my stuff got a bit banged up, probably due to inadequate padding. But they guys worked very hard and were pleasant. And the price was right. I also liked the website where you can request an estimate and pick and confirm your move date. A good choice for a local move.

Had a similar situation to RUPAUL S. Only I was trying to rehire them, and was met with extremely rude behavior from Rudy. I had used them in a previous move and they were pretty cool. They moved everything quickly and efficiently and I ended up leaving the two dudes who moved me a $40 cash tip each. When I called them at the end of my lease to move again, the owner was unbelievably rude and hung up on me. I was going to recommend them to all my friends moving for September 1st (my lease ended on July 31), but instead went with another moving company with nicer staff and more accommodating people. Check out Raimond's Movers. The owner is Raimond himself, and he was the one who actually assisted in helping me move then Anton's owner, Rudy, was being an incompetent and rude business fellow. I would use Raimond's again since Anton's customer service skills are severely lacking. Anton's should recognize that the key to good business is customer service, because it essentially ends up working for you on referrals alone. You won't be getting my referral...and now to post a rave review on Raimonds!

Anton's movers were great and quick. Never underestimate experience, because these guys definitely know how to move. It was my first moving experience using movers so I was a little hesitant to dish out money for them. Most of the movers I looked at were $100-$130/hour with truck and these guys were $75! They came right in the middle of the time slot they said they would come, they moved things quickly, they were professional and courteous. It amazes me that the couch that took my brother an I an hour to get up only took them 10 minutes to get down. In addition, they were very accomodating as we had 2 locations to pick up from. Surprisingly, everything fit together perfectly in the truck. In the end everything was moved safe and sound. I would definitely use these guys again.

Prompt and friendly service, but slow. My girlfriend and I had a fairly involved move last year, condensing two apartments into one. This year we moved within the same town, and somehow it cost more. I chalk it up to different movers, this year being Anton's. They didn't break anything and were right on time, but damn if they weren't slow. Every hour we kept looking at the clock, not believing how long it was taking. I expected around 3.5 hours and it ended up 5.5. Oh well.

We decided to use Anton's after reading all these great reviews but will not use them again.
On the plus side; they were on-time, friendly while they worked, organized and reasonably efficient, wrapping our more delicate furniture pieces and mostly everything came unscathed. They also didnt insist on any particular tip.
On the negative side, they ended up costing us an arm and a leg. There is a reason their per hour rate is so low. When I called them to discuss how long it would take, I was told it was unlikely to take more than 4 hrs. It took almost 7. They broke the speaker we had attached on top of the TV and forgot to mention it so we only noticed it after they had left. On top of that, they broke a window in the building moving the couch and then refused to pay for it when we got the bill from the landlord. After a few weeks of phone calls and emails, they agreed to pay only half the cost.
So next time we will probably go with a more professional moving company that gurantees a maximum time limit and has a contract that covers the cost of any damage caused directly by them. We ended up paying $800 to move our 1 bedroom apt furniture 3 miles.
I am disappointed that we didnt have great an experience with them as everyone else did. I would probably have been ok with the time issue and the damage to the speaker if they had behaved professionally about paying for the damage they had caused. -
Review from Alice K.
Queens, NY
just moved to ny from boston. the movers came on time, actually even a bit early which was great. they took longer to load up than i expected. think it took 2 1/2 hrs to 3 hrs to load up the truck for our 2 bedroom apartment. we sold most of our furniture and didn't move everything except big stuff. but no complaints from me for taking their time to load up the truck! everything got delivered in the shape they left boston, meaning, no broken objects or scratches or losing items. they moved my imac and flat screen t.v. too. they took really good care of fragile objects. they arrived promptly, again early which i much prefer than late the next morning with everything. they were much faster at unloading the truck and placed things where we asked them to. i promised i would write a good review for such amazing job they did with our move!!! if i move back to boston, definitely moving again with anton's movers. very reasonable, very professional, and would trust all my stuff with them again for a move any time.

Review from Tiffany W.
Dorchester, MA
I have used Anton's movers 2 times before my move in Dec.08. So I had no hesitations about hiring them again. I made my reservation and immediately received my confirmation email. It was for 8:00pm not for the 8:00a, as I requested. I called back immediately and was told "Oh no it is my error, I know you want 8:00a, we will be there". I never received my 24hr confirmation call, so I started calling the day before, and calling and calling and calling......up until 9:00a the day of my move. They were a no show. I ended up having to call another company for that same day, who had me moved quickly. I finally got my confirmation call from Anton's, from t he same number I had been calling all day (thank you caller id) at 4:00pm the day of my move confirming for 8:00pm that evening. Needless to say I let them have it. All they could say was I'm sorry Ma'am, I don't know what to say...Well Anton's say Goodbye!!! Will never call you again!!! You lost a trusted customer!!
