Went here with my parents, wife and two kids for lunch.  Plenty of menu options and a decent beer list.  Many of the menu items contained Mozambique sauce...why not?  It is the most delicious sauce I've ever had...I want it flowing through my veins!  The portions were huge, so I recommend sharing with someone and paying the extra buck for sharing a plate.  This place is great.

As a personal trainer, I recommend you don't eat the entire day before coming here.
    The portions are ridiculous.
I had the fisherman plate.... I was in the mood for fried stuff and that's what I got... a PLATTER of fried fish and potatoes and it totally hit the spot.
Pretty sure I gained 5 lbs but I'll work it off tomorrow. :)

Great food, huge portions, low prices, no frills...the way a Portuguese restaurant should be. Having married into a Portuguese family, I've had my fair share of Portuguese dining experiences in both Portugal and Southeastern MA & RI. Antonio's is near the top of my list of favorites.

My only negative comment would be that they're a cash-only establishment...however, that sort of adds to the charm for me.

PS, John the bartender is hilarious.

If you're hungry, the paella for 2 is a good meal, including lobster! If you're not that hungry it will feed 3! Or, bring some home and enjoy it again. (I have to admit, though, that it tasted better in the restaurant than it did the next day.)

My second visit and I'lll be back. Reasonable prices, too.

Coming home from Cape Cod I stopped here for dinner after reading my friend John B's review of Antonio's. I sat at the bar and had a small order of the sardine and I could barely finish it.  The fish was great and it came with a side of rice and a salad. Had two Carlsbad beers, you don't see that on tap to often, and the bill came out to $16.

The people at the bar could not have been nicer and this is a real great place to stop for a great meal.

I am born and raised in New Bedford and I can say without a doubt that Antonio's is my favorite Portuguese restaurant....ever. No matter what dish you get, you are guaranteed bites of deliciousness.

There usually is a wait and the waiting area is small so make sure you dont get there too late. I frequently order Sumol, which is a Portuguese soda that comes in 3 flavors (my favorite is pineapple), to start of my evening. They give several kinds of bread which are all good. Waiting staff are very personable and friendly and very helpful in assisting visitors who are unfamiliar with Portuguese cuisine. Portions are pretty big so you will have some for lunch the next day. If a dish comes with french fries, I highly recommend to ask for the sliced potatoes, their like thin potato chips. The shrimp mozambique is spicy but scrumptious! If you have any room for dessert, definitely got the chocolate mousse with chocolate bits inside. Overall excellent dining experience.

My wife is a gourmand. She enjoys cooking and fine foods and has a very critical palette. She has worked and dined in quite a few excellent restaurants here and abroad. I was shocked to hear her say that this was the best food she ever had in a restaurant in her life.

The waitress was excellent and friendly, ensuring that we were enjoying our dining experience. There were several families, including some with small children. There should be something to appeal to most kids on the menu, and they had a selection for children as well.

The food was truly phenomenal and the portions herculean. I could have eaten the croquetes de carne by the dozen and my wife loved the cod croquettes.  Be prepared to haul a take-home bag (you will not want to share with the dog...sorry, Mollie); my wife barely dented her Ribaatejana. I managed to finish my Portuguese Steak (steak, ham, fried eggs, ham, rice, and the ubiquitous fries slathered with a delicious brown sauce.) Save room for the rice pudding - the best I've ever had. It's so dense, my wife refers to it as a rice flan.

Antonio's sports a bar and there is a fine selection of Portuguese liquors  as well as a good selection of more traditional American cordials, wines, and beers.

I called for reservations the day before, but the hostess forgot. There was a line - a long one - but she made it right. I do recommend calling a day in advance - and I suppose a little reminder around noon or so wouldn't be a bad idea. Even though there was a steady stream of people in line, it seemed to move fairly quickly; unless you are herding a crew of hungry littles, the wait seemed to be reasonable....especially considering the quality of the meal.

There is a parking lot across the street for Antonio's customers. The restaurant does not take credit cards, so make sure you bring cash.

Ordered the chicken mozambique, and split it between myself, my husband, and my three year old. It was amazing and I kept eating even after I was full because I just couldn't get enough! We ended up with a doggie bag even though we split it amongst three people -- the portions are beyond ridiculously huge! AND its cheap.
The service was fine, nothing special but nothing bad to note.
The place was cozy and 3/4ths full of people, but it did not feel overbearing.
Definitely one of the best authentic Portuguese places in the area.

Portions are absurdly large. Restaurant was quite full on the Tuesday night after Christmas. Pork ribatejana consisted of tender, although sometimes fatty pork, little neck clams, medium size shrimp in a flavorful broth topped with french-fried potato cubes. Served with Portuguese rolls. Ambiance and noise-level were decent and service was good. Gave it three stars because I haven't had enough Portuguese food to compare it to but I would definitely go back here.

I felt like I was lied to about this place. Waitress was very rude and seemed like she didn't want to be there. Food lacked flavor and was just ok. I'm just hoping this was an off day and I will try it again in the future. The portions and prices are very good, but that's about the only highlight!

Came here on recommendation of friends.  Really easy to get to off 195.  Wow, is this place good.  The stuffed quahog with the linguica was different and awesome.  Wife got the scrod.  A huge portion - the sauce was light but really tasty.  Roasted potatoes were delicious.  Only reason this didn't get a 5th star was that my fried clams were a little rubbery.  Service was super friendly, even though we got there just before the kitchen closed.  After dinner, went to the bar and watched the Bruins win in a shortcut.  What could be better?

really great restaurant.  Following other recommendations, i had the shrimp/clams appetizer. Typically i would never do clams at a restaurant, as we dig our own and consider older than two hours to be less than fresh, and i love the taste of the sea. We would have been proud to serve these clams. Perfectly cooked (not overcooked) with a very fragrant and flavorable broth--truly delicious. As with the clams, the shrimp were done perfectly, not tough and overcooked.

I had the combination bz i feared average clams, but next time i would go with a strictly clams dish.

My lunch partner had the grilled sardines--also excellent.

Antonio's has the right idea, focus on really fresh ingredients simply prepared--let the main ingredient shine.

This is where an Irishman like me gos to get his Portuguese on. The food is beyond outstanding and the portions are huge. Whenever I eat here I end up eating it for days. The Pork and Littlenecks are out of this world. My favorite place on the South Coast. Lots of parking across the street. Allow yourself a little wait time on weekends as this place is a favorite of the locals so it can be busy.

My buddy and I came here on a weekend to grab a quick dinner and I gotta say I was quite impressed by the quality of food and service, and it helps the price was fair as well.

We got there at 7ish and the place was pretty packed at both their restaurant and cafe/bar section. But somehow my buddy got a table and we sat down pretty quick without waiting, and remember they don't take reservations.

The owner was quite friendly and suggested the shrimp rotisserie for appetizer which was quite big (at least 15 pieces) for a starter. Then we picked the Paella dish for one individual which again was huge and definitely big enough for two+ which was the case for us. So I think I made my point clear that their portions are large and the price was fair.

We both ended up paying about $20 each, and that includes two Portuguese beers which had a good light flavour. The service was pretty good and responsive so no complaints there. The crowd is mostly family type or older folks. In addition, I seen some reviews complain about the decor and I say the decor is fine, not fancy and just normal and homely which is fine for this type of restaurant.

So overall, definitely a must try for anyone who likes this type of food and near the area; kinda sucks it's this far away from downtown Boston area, even from my place took like 40 minute drive but well worth it.

I honestly cannot believe that I have not written a review of Antonio's before. I've been going here since I was like five and go about once every month.

Antonio's is pretty much the crowning achievement that New Bedford has to offer. It has always been the place to get cheap and great tasting Portuguese food in a town based on that heritage. In a town chock full of Portuguese eateries, Antonio's definitely stands above the rest.

The portions of Pork Meat Ribjana (Nice Cocila-like pork with wonderful potato cubes) are plentiful and delicious for only eighteen bucks when with two pop breads and two shrimp croquettes. These big tin of food that fill a few stomachs are great for a group from two to seven.

But those are just the Take out items that you get when you order ahead. The restaurant and bar of Antonio's is really Portuguese and accurate. You can get a Cocoila sandwich, linguica, many types of plates of food that are just superb and great for sharing.

The place may not look from the outside like the best place to eat, but when you finally taste the scrumptious grub, you can't wait to come again!

I knew when I read how big the portions are that this may not be my favorite place.  I was right.  To us, large portions are not a plus, usually a negative.  Antonio's portions are just TOO big and serves no real purpose except for a doggie bag.  The paella for two, that is all we ordered, was humongous but did not have the subtle flavors of a good paella.  I like the whole lobster, split in half.  The clams were big and chewy, the mussels also were too big.  The chicken and beef were okay but did not have much flavor.  There was a ton of rice swimming in a sauce.  Just too much.  We ate as much as we could and still had a doggie bag that was extremely heavy.  We left the resuarnt and gave the doggie bag to a homeless person.
One good thing, I ordered a bottle of Portuguese white that I never tasted.  It was a nice find.
I wish they gave less food and made the dishes more flavorful.

I like Antonio's.  As mentioned by other reviewers it is very popular.  We went on a recent Sun night and waited about 20 min for a table.

I've been here a few times, and my favorite dishes to get are the meat skewers.  During the last visit I got a lamb skewer, which was on the specials list.  I asked for medium and it was indeed medium.  And delicious!  I like the rice and fries that come with the meal.

Also, you get a ton of food.  The lamb special was $14 and it was definitely 2+ meals.

I am a fan of this place not because the food is excellent, but because the overall experience is excellent. The food is good, the portions, service, price are all excellent. I've been a couple of times and can say the pork chops, paella and house steak are pretty good.

The croquettes de bacalau are not that good so I'd steer clear. Keep in mind they only accept cash, which is usually a sign of a good restaurant. It's usually packed, so there's automatically a good atmosphere. Would recommend checking it out

Where do I start. Simply Portuguese simply done right. My party of 3 waited at the bar for 15 minutes and got seated. Ordered apps. Shrimp croquettes were really good, and the stuffed quahog was pretty good and a little spicy. I had the pork ribatejana, a mix of slow cooked pork with littlenecks, shrimp and potatoes. This dish was very authentic and tasty. A little too salty though but it was good. My wife and friend "shared" the paella. Very good w/ beef, clams, mussels and literally half a lobster. We heard the portions were big. We took more than 2lbs of paella home and the pork dish went around the whole house. I mean, I can eat and I took enough home to feed myself twice and my two kids. Ridiculous portions and very good. 2 entrees, 3 apps and 2 beers came to under $50. Not bad. Highly recommend.

Its a complete shame that there hasn't been a review on this restaurant yet, but I am honored to do it!

Antonio's has been one of the two best Portuguese restaurants in New Bedford for the past 10+ years. Simply put, I know very few people who do not like their plates, or better yet, can actually finish them! A plate is really a "pinella", or pan in Portuguese. The portions are huuuuge!

Taste/quality get a slightly lower rating than portion score only because I have never been to a restaurant that has given me more food. That being said, taste/texture is on point...fish plates are fresh, vegetables are always tasty and the food in general tastes damn good. (I strongly encourage the rabbit dinner, simply amazing!)

Antonio's get's 5 thumbs up from me...if you are someone who likes to eat, likes to indulge in authentic Portuguese cuisine, make the trek to New Bedford...its conveniently located off of 195 with plenty of parking...

As a self proclaimed foodie I would have to say that the seafood stew at Antonio's might be one of the best dishes I have ever had.  For 25$ you get an entire lobster,  lots of muscles, little necks, shrimp and scallops, all cooked in an incredible red sauce.  The "martha stewart" little necks in the white sauce? are you kidding me, they are to die for, and its 12$.  I noticed on yelp that some people are complaining about the service.  Service is good, prompt and efficient,  30 seconds after you walk in the door you will realize what the place is about.   if you're looking for a server to kiss your ass and let you smell the cork, you might want go to the top of the hub with the rest of the amateurs.

Definitely some of the best Potuguese food in the area. As others have said, it is not a fancy restaurant by any stretch of the imagination. But let's face it, you do not dine out in Fall River / New Bedford if you are looking for an elegant restaurant or a romantic dining experience.

Antonio's has, by far,THE best mozambique sauce in the area (order the "Shrimp and Little Necks Antonio's" appetizer). The sauce is incredibly flavorful and if you're not careful you can easily make a meal out of this appetizer when you start dunking the Portuguese bread.

The seafood paella is also very good, but tends to be piled high with "filler" items like calamari and mussles. I recommend getting the appetizer described above and trying some other entrees.

The pork alentejana (pork & little necks) is phenomenal as well. Far better than that offered at most Portuguese restaurants I've been to.

Bottom line... don't miss this place. You may like some items better at other restaurants, but you would be a fool not to give Antonio's a try!

Only three words are necessary for this place:  Eggplant French Fries.

Yeah, ok, so I'm a total dorkwad and had no idea what I was ordering.  I saw eggplant french fries and figured, oh, it's french fries with a little bit of eggplant on the side or sprinkled on top or, well, I really had no idea.

They come out the french fries look odd.  Not like potatoes.  But I still didn't get it.  Then I bit into a couple of pieces.  Wait!  This doesn't taste like french fries.  This tastes like french fried eggplant!  *cue cherubs*

I was pretty lucky.  There was parm sprinkled on top so the dairy-allergic boy couldn't eat any.  His grandma, who I was meeting for the first time, didn't eat any of that stuff anymore, being in her late 90s.  YES!  Eggplant french fries all to myself!

I remember the rest of the food being pretty good.  I had a salmon which was pretty tasty but nothing out of this world.  I can't really remember much of the food other than it being better than average but not exceedingly amazing.  But those eggplant french fries... *sigh*  Maybe a trip to New Bedford is in order soon.

Comfortable, homey atmosphere (don't let the outside fool you), great food, decently priced (though not cheap, by any means).  My husband and I shared a bowl of clam chowder, and the baked (broiled?) scrod/scallops/shrimp dish with potatoes, rice and green beans.  The portions were plentiful and the flavors were fabulous!  My major complaint is that I felt a little rushed by the waitress--like taking my order was an inconvenience to her (which was odd, since she seemed to have plenty of time to socialize with customers of the male gender...)   Disclaimer:  I had only been in the area a couple days, and have since run into this "hurry up, you're wasting my time" attitude on several occasions, so maybe it's just a cultural/regional thing.  Also, they do not accept credit cards, which  we have found to be more a rule than an exception in this area.  Overall, I would recommend Antonio's.

A trip south of Boston today with lots of time to spare, made us decide to hop off the highway and spend some time checking out New Bedford and Fairhaven. We'd heard good things were happening in New Bedford and that it was becoming more of a destination. Our first stop was lunch and thanks to Yelpers we decided on Antonios and are we glad we did.  It was really busy on a weekday afternoon which I thought was a good sign. It is a homey and comfortable restaurant with a bar on one side and the rest of the restaurant on the other. Nice separation so you're not bothered by the TVs at the bar. There is an impressive menu of primarily Portuguese dishes.  We read on the menu that this place was voted to be one of the best ethnic restaurants in New England by Bon Appetit magazine.  We also learned that at some point Martha Stewart had been by and her favorite dish was the Steamed Littlenecks- Bulhao Pato.  We started with the fried squid appetizer which was good but no better than what you get anyplace else you've had it. While I enjoyed it I was sorry I hadn't opted for something more specifically Portuguese.  We also tried the cod cakes filled with minced cod and potato, rolled in crumbs and fried to perfection. Very good.  For my main dish I got a broiled seafood platter. What came out was an enormous plate heaped with shrimp, scallops, and scrod with a delicate lemon butter.  It came with a side of boiled potatoes which were a reminder that when food is  simply prepared you often get perfection . This dish was carbo heaven as there was also a side of rice in a tomato based sauce that was incredibly tasty. And there was also a side of broccoli.  My husband got the fried version of my meal but his also included fried clams.  By the time we were filled and could eat no more it looked like we hadn't made a dent in our plates. We assured our lovely waitperson that we loved every bite of food but there was no way we could have eaten any more.   The prices are incredibly low especially when your baseline is the cost of similar meals in Boston.  Oh...and the draft beer of the day was $2.50 a pint.
After lunch we needed a walk and we enjoyed our brief tour of downtown New Beford with charming cobblestone streets and some amazing architecture. This is a city with an incredible maritime and whaling history, some of which you can learn about in the Whaling Museum. There are definitely reasons to head down to New Bedford for an afternoon and Antonios is certainly one of them.

If you want white table clothes and fine china...it is not for you. if you want a superior wine list, designer cocktails or Whistle Pig rye...it is not for you. If you want great seafood that is impeccably cooked...this place is for you!!!!

Antonio's is a neighborhood bar with a dining room with a maestro in the kitchen. The bar is filled with locals; there is European league football on the TV (After all, it is a Portuguese restaurant in a Portuguese neighborhood in a town with Portuguese language newspapers). One of us had the clam and shrimp appetizer (I don't know the Portuguese name and they do not have a website) in a fragrant and thin red wine sauce. The clams were fresh and perfectly cooked. The sauce was so good you could eat it with a spoon. I had grilled sardines - an item you only find on the menu at the most dedicated seafood restaurants. They came as a simple preparation and were excellent.

Since we were there for lunch, we did not have drinks, wine, dessert or a hamburger - I can not comment on them. Will I go back...absolutely?  Will I recommend it to friends...absolutely.  Will I recommend it to my mother...absolutely not - she wants white table cloths! Be forewarned, the portions are large, the prices are extremely fair and the seafood is perfect.

This place is OK. But if you like Portuguese food, I mean real Portuguese food, try somewhere else. If you like American food with Portuguese names and ingredients, well then, you've found it.

We went on a tuesday for lunch and it was busy always a good sign. let me start with the positives. I ordered the seafood casserole. It was huge, it came in a dog bowl sized bowl. it contained a full split lobster maybe a dozen shrimp, and a dozen scallops. There were 1/2 dozen mussels and another 1/2 dz littlenecks. So for $25 you are getting a ton of seafood. the flavor was good but not awesome (see my margarets review on the mussels). My wife had the steak and fries. the steak was tasty but overcooked. I would eat here again except one problem. Cash only. The waitress did not tell us this until the end and I did not see it on the menu. It was in small print. they have an ATM for $2 plus  what my bank charges me. I was looking at a 3 or 4% surcharge on my meal. Normally I tip 25-35% but this time only 20%. the waitress should have informed us before the meal. If McDonalds excepts CC then a restaurant with average checks of $40-$50 for 2 should. I think it is cheesy to not take CC but have an ATM in the dining rooom. I heard there is another portuguese place in town cafe Funchal and I think I will try that instead.

I came here with a local New Bedfordian and was excited to try Portuguese food for the first time. I had the shrimp appetizer (which really is a full meal) and the shrimps themselves and the rice were incredibly flavorful. Despite the fact that I got an upset stomach later, it really was good food.
