Fantastic Italian pastry shop tucked away in an amazing Italian neighborhood that few people know about...Nonantum!
Antoine's gives the pastry pumped out of the North End a run for its money, and I had quite possibly the most delicious blueberry scone ever last time I went. I will definitely be back again...and again.
Gotta learn that Lake Talk though...

Review from Tatsu I.
"THE LAKE"
The village of Nonantum in Newton appears suddenly into view when driving past the edge of Waltham's east border and may even be mistaken for part of Watertown, as Newton Corner is further south. As it turns out, Nonamtum is a district of Newton that didn't exist 60 years ago, it was formerly known as Silver Lake, a body of water that landfilled and paved over much like Back Bay decades before that. A regional Italian-American community quickly settled with Antoine's Pastry to become one of the centerpieces of this neighborhood now known as "The Lake" to its residents, whose own Lingua Fraca may have even originated the phrase "Wicked Pissa".
Nostalgic signage in script and block type letters advertise Italian and French baked goods, but straight up renditions of Italian-American classics such as Tiramisu, Lobster Tails, Cream Puffs, Cannoli, and Eclairs fill the middle case. They are very simliar to offerings in Medford or North End. Directly behind this counter case are the Biscotti, at $17 a pound, weighty and chock full of small roasted almonds. Since they are freshly baked, still somewhat moist - a surprise if you only have had grocery store or coffee shop biscotti.
The normal sized Cannoli shells, some chocolate coated, await to be filled by order, in your choice of custard or traditional light sweetened cheese. Above is an array of Pizzelle in lemon, almond, vanilla, even chocolate. Antoine's is large compared to other Italian-American bakeries, so products are organized smartly by type, making it easier to decide what to choose. Cakes, tarts, cookies and simpler pastries are to the right of the central case, while house baked breads in American and Italian forms and shapes are seen as you walk in deeper. Finally, American-style goods, such as Raspberry Wheels are found in the last case.
While I am not generally not prone to sweet-tooth, these are familiar but well done pastries that match the North End or Medford's best. The sizes are correct but generous while other touristy establishments have blown up their offerings to obscene Vinny Testa family-size portions. Overall, the pace is relaxed and offerings diverse without being overwhelming.
Antoine's has a tight-knit community feel that is more charming and inviting than the North End, despite it being a land-locked island of sorts with few interlopers. Some of this bears out in the goods, such as the premium Biscotti and the Lobster Tail, a harmonious blend of custard and cream in flaky pastry, not unlike the Japanese specialty, the Beard Papa cream puff, both a balanced blend of light and heavy fillings that sits up firm but coats the palate pleasingly.
Antoine's is certainly one the main attractions in an exploratory visit to Nonantum, along with the Neopolitan Pizza at Maria di Napoli, the stunningly resourceful CTS Computer shop, and cutlery and knife-sharpening at Stoddard's. All of these are throwbacks to places and times you will be surprised that still exist. Sadly, Italian bread specialist Magni Bakery is closed, although you can peer into the vacant shop, signs still intact, and imagine bread that exists no more, along with Silver Lake, where you now incongruously stand on firm pavement. -

I want to thank Antoine's Pastry Shop for being problem solvers. I needed some large pastry sort of boxes and they were helpful and accommodating. Sampled a cupcake while I was there and was a delicious treat while running errands and putting out fires (figuratively).
It was bustling with other happy customers getting lots of tempting desserts. -

Oh sweet Antoine's. How I miss you. There are no Italian bakeries in LA (well no good ones) and there is no place that can even shake a stick at The Lake.
The lovely, wafting scents from Antoine's, the perfectly perfect cannoli, the Italian Easter Egg Bread (haven't seen one here yet) that makes me cry, the string you pull from the hanging string dispenser (old time-y and sweet), the boxed panettone.
All so perfect and delicious. All so homey and soul-satisfying. I miss Antoine's, and I miss The Lake...Mush!Listed in: Boston Faves

I don't claim to be an expert on Italian bakeries but I like this place a lot. It's old school, and clearly family owned and operated. I love getting a peak at one of the old timers frosting cakes in the back with a spatula. No fondant here! Just good old fashioned Italian goodness. You've got to try the lobster tails and their Zeppole's are AWESOME. Get them while you still can!
I hope we can keep these guys around for along time. -

Review from Ana R.
I've been here a total of 10 minutes and plan to spend the rest of my life no more than a 5-minute drive from this place. Sweet, sweet pastry heaven. My boyfriend and I almost drove past, but decided to stop in for a post-dinner treat.
I was brought up with a weekly pastry run, maybe that's why I felt so at-home at Antoine's. Ok, I'm Portuguese, not Italian, but it translates pretty well.
This is a deli-like take a number system, and it works nicely. There's no panic-driven rush to make eye contact with the people behind the counter (which is amply staffed). When we got there, they were serving #68 and we got #74. The wait was minimal, no more than three minutes, I swear, and you take all that time anyway drooling over the giant displays.
Everything looks amazing. Everything. We got a four-item assortment - eclair (giant!), elephant ear (my favorite and this one was no disappointment - amazing!), a cannoli (orgasmic) and this giant cream-filled cornicopia-shaped flaky pastry, which was gorgeous-tasting.
The young woman who served us was wicked nice - total came to $10.25. I had a $10 but no quarter. She immediately told me to forget the quarter which I thought was really nice and uncommon service in these days, but I paid her with a $20 and kept the change for tolls. As she handed us the treasured package, I noticed boxes of candy-coated almonds behind the counter and pointed them out to my boyfriend as traditional candies that Italians and the Portuguese have at nearly every special event. Our bakery angel promptly offered some on the house, but we kindly declined - I was mostly shocked at the sweet gesture!!
We'll definitely keep going back. The service and pastries were excellent, and it feels great to support such a great hometown business. Highly recommended.
Parking is on-street, but easy to find.

This Italian bakery reminds me of the warm summer days I spent out in Milan, Florence and Rome. Man oh man, these pastries feel just like where they come from. They have Panetone stacked on shelves and some delicious, authentic pastries ready to be devoured by the hungry crowd. I love local businesses and gladly give them my money in support of their effort to resist the competition from bigger corporations.
Their chocolate eclairs are amazing and I really enjoy their biscottis as well. I have yet to try more of their stuff but so far I've been a very satisfied customer. And their prices are low. What else could you ask for? -

This place used to be on the way to my doctor's office...oh, the sweet transfatty irony.
I don't go out of my way to go here, but if I ever drive by again I will probably buy the entire contents of the bakery and eat it all on the way home.
Ok, I may be slightly exaggerating. But the lobster tails are soooo good. Some college friends of mine had a porno called "cream filling." I digress. So, anyway, get anything filled with cream and be fat and happy. -

You know how it is when you have a fabulous food memory of some place . . . and then, after some time has passed, you try to relive it again and it just doesn't live up to your expectations? Well, that was how I felt about the goodies I had from Antoine's a couple of weeks ago.
It's an Italian bakery in the section of town known as The Lake. The Italian section of town, where the streets all have names but are painted with a thick red, white, and green stripe down the center. It's the real deal. They know they're stuff. And they're a neighborhood institution. The place has that North End been-here-since-forever feeling, which is nice. And the glass display case is neatly arranged with cakes, cookies, cream-adorned pastries, and such. And there's a sign hanging with a list of their specialty cakes, which you have to order in advance. One of these cakes is the Strawberry Shortcake. The (former) cake of my dreams.
Did it always have rum in it? Why do I not remember that? I hate rum in cakes. Positively. Big props for the fluffy goodness of the white cake and the not-too-sugary frosting. And big props for the fact that everybody else at work thought the cake rocked, and gave me big props for creativity. And the birthday girl was especially touched because this was the bakery her parents always got their goodies from when she was a kid living in the area. And the birthday girl liked rum.
I guess, what I'm saying is that we've got ourselves a bona-fide Italian bakery out here in the 'burbs. They're doinig everything right. But I just don't like rum in my desserts. -

I waited a while to be helped by one of the guys rolling out dough in the back, but I didn't really mind. While waiting, I eyed the insanely rich looking cakes, but remained firm in my decision to leave with a small assortment of pastries: a cannoli, an eclair, and a slice/mountain of tiramisu.
I've chosen not to come here before because of price ($2-3 per cookie for an office lunch seemed a little much), but I walked out with three pastries for $7.50. There are no signs anywhere, so they may just make them up as they go along.
All items were delightfully tasty, and I must say the cannoli was the best- had the perfect amount of ricotta in the cream filling. Yum.
When I can't trek to the North End, I can schlep to Newton to get my Italian pastry fix. -

I'm gonna go ahead and make a bold statement - Antoine's is better than anything in the North End. Yes! I mean it. And, if you live on the west side of the city, far easier to get to!
You want some legit, home-style, truly home-made pastries or fresh bread? Does it make you feel even better if you buy it from an older Italian man working the counter who knows his loyal customers? Then this place is for you!
I'm starting to make this place a habit and it will NOT be good for my waist line, but it is so hard to stay away! I walk in and Pete asks me how I've been and if my boyfriend shared that last cannoli with me... then I begin the difficult decision between an amazingly light ricotta cannoli or tart pastry... and maybe a bag of fresh pizzelles for the road! I brought a tiramisu cake from here to my friend's housewarming a few weekends ago and it was GONE at the end of the day... don't worry Antoine's, I didn't even try to take credit for having made it myself! My Nonna would be proud that at least if I can't cook, I know how to spot an excellent authentic pastry shop!Listed in: When In Newton...

The last time I went to Antoine's, I was rudely ignored by the people working there. It was not busy, but some of the owner's family stopped by and they were too busy pinching the cheeks of the grandson to take my order. I stood there for over 5 minutes and couldn't get the attention of anyone working there. All I wanted was a cookie, for crying out loud.
I stormed out and went to Bobalicious for some bubble tea to placate my sweet tooth craving.Listed in: Newton Guide (focusing North…, Cucina Italiana!, A Baker's Dozen, If I'm breaking my diet...

I am fortunate (or maybe unfortunate) enough to walk by Antoine's daily on my way to and from work. Once in a while I like to stop in and get a cannoli, eclair or something else sweet and fattening--thats why it might be unfortunate.
I suppose I have stopped in Antoine's about 10 times and I have always been satisfied, if not impressed, with the items I have purchased. The only thing that I thought was so-so was their chocolate chip cookies, but in hindsight I don't know why I would buy a cookie when there were so many more attractive items in the display case. I guess the cookie is why I am giving 4 stars instead of 5.
The service here is excellent. Everyone here is friendly and polite, and that will make you want to visit Antoine's more often. It is as if they are happy that you are there, and I don't get that feeling at a grocery store bakery.
I just bought a loaf of Challah from here yesterday, but have yet to taste it. I will let you know how it goes. -

This is a high quality, traditional Italian bakery. We live nearby and come frequently for the fresh bread- the cinnamon bread is the best I've ever had. The Italian bread of course is delicious as well- a nice crust on the outside, soft and perfect texture on the inside.
In terms of pastries, my family loves the ricotta pie. My husband's favorite treat are the eclairs. And there are so many other tasty treats! Awesome spot. -

A friend introduced me to this bakery today, and they had one of those string dispensers for tying up pastry boxes. That's old school, or maybe I don't enter bakeries too often.
Good stuff, though. I bought a bag of anise-flavored pizzelles. Yum! -

I just moved to the area and a friend told me that Antoine's had better cannolis than Mike's in the North End. This weekend the weather was nice so I ventured down to find out if this was true.
Long story short...they are not. However, they have some goodies that are definitely worth a return visit. There was quite a large selection and if those pies taste even half as good as they look then Antoine's will be my good friend.
Stay away from the Tiramisu (too strong), but definitely try out anything they make that has some type of cream and puff going on. Yum-my. -

I went to Antoine's last night when I was given the task of bringing dessert to a dinner. The canoles and italian cookies were very tasty! The cookies weren't too sweet and the canoles could hold their own against any from the North End. Definitely worth a try! The jelly filled italian cookies were my favorite treat in the assortment.

I stopped in last weekend after passing by this place many times. It looks like a cute old fashioned Italian bakery on the outside and many of their pastries looked really great. I opted for a couple of the almond biscotti behind the counter and a small container of these cute frosted lemon cookies stacked neatly on the counter.
I figured this would be a relatively inexpensive purchase and when she said the total was $11, I nearly fell over. "$11?" I repeated. "Yes - the lemon cookies were $7.95", she told me. I purchased them and left there thinking these cookies better knock my socks off!
I have to admit, the almond bisocotti were pretty awesome - tender, almost chewy, and chock full of almonds. Those little lemon cookies, however, were anything but the delectable jewel I had hoped they would be. Instead, they were dry, stale, and bland. I could have gotten much much better at Russo's for a whole lot less money. I won't be back....if I'm going to splurge....it's going to be on something that is guaranteed to be awesome! -

Having been a North End devotee for some time, I was skeptical of Antoine's - but boy, am I glad I tried it out. Easily the best cannolis I've ever tasted! Hands down. They have this crunchy yet chewy, flaky pastry, and the chocolate/vanilla cream that fills it (while not your traditional ricotta filling) is out of this world. I also tried a lobster tail, which has mounds of delicious, fluffy cream in a flaky, layered pastry shell. I was in hog heaven. I brought one to my mother, who was physically incapable of putting it down after starting it - at one point, I had to practically wrestle it away from her. Not a pretty scene.
Others have commented on the prices, but I walked away with 4 cannolis, 2 lobster tails, and an eclair for under $20, which seems pretty damn good to me! -

What a disappointment! I went home to celebrate my birthday a few weeks ago and told my family I wanted a Red Velvet cake for my birthday. My mom did some research of places in the area that made them. She called Antoines a week before my birthday to place an order. The owner answered the phone and said that she could pick up the red velvet the night before my birthday. We arrived to pick up my cake and gave out last name to which the women blurted out a "Chocolate cake for Happy Birthday Chuck"..A Chocolate Cake???! We ordered a red velvet...she showed us the original order form to which it was written Red Velvet and someone crossed it out and put Chocolate. The owner came out and instead of being compassionate and understanding that someone made a mistake he said they do not make red velvet cakes. Interesting when he took the order, they have red velvet cupcakes but because of someones negligence I was out the cake I wanted nor did offer to come back the next day and he would try to make one. He claimed the kitchen was closed. So I never ended up getting the Red Velvet cake I wanted. I would not go back here thats for sure! 0/100 Chuck it! Thanks Antoines for ruining my birthday!!!

Antoine's is one of a kind. The place is a very traditional bakery, and that is part of its charm. It looks like its been awhile since the decor was updated (walking in I feel like I am stepping a few decades back in time) and the bakery items are classics. The staff is always very pleasant and the prices are super reasonable. The lobster tails, eclairs and cinnamon bread are some of my favorite items.

I've been going to Antoine's for about five years. Yeah, the selection doesn't change, but it doesn't have to be new to be good. Prices are reasonable, everything is high quality and there are certain items - the mocha cakes, as an example - that are better than what you'll find in any bakery in the Boston area. Leave your diet at the door and enjoy the tasty goodies!

four above average stars, cant give you 5, heres why...
while the appeal of an authentic Italian bakery outside the northend is pleasing to my tastetounge, i cant say this is on the same level as a mikes or modern. still, the string containers hanging from the ceiling and the pantones ready to go on the shelves says authentic
the smell inside is distinct and will remind you of those must go spots in the north end, however, its not close. the last time i was there (which i will admit too, sorry mer, i did sneak a special treat without you knowing) was a couple of months ago, the selection was above average, maybe 15 different types of carbs in the cases. the cannoli, the true index, was not particularly good. did i eat the whole thing?? of course i did, thats not the point, the point is that when i bought it, it was obv that it had been sitting filled int he case for some time, the chocolate covered shell had some condensation on it which softens up the crunch, not an endearing quality for a cannoli.
I also picked up a mocha roll which was tasty too, nice mocha flavor, some raspberry jelly in the inside, it complemented each other well. i also picked up some wifey favs, hermit cookies, she had some, but then left the rest in the box for later, big mistake, i ate that also ;) pastries, even when they arent great, they are still good.
so the price was good, cheaper then north end rate, the line was almost nonexistent, however, i think they had only one person working, so early mornings could be a wait, ive been there a few times in the last couple of years, still nothing too ling if ever, the consistency hasnt changed in that time either.
in closing: price fair, quality fair, location is a plus (for those in the newton/metro west area) and absolutely authentic Italian -

Antoine's is a great, traditional bakery. The pastries are always fresh and delicious. The Italian Bread is excellent. They also make an excellent cinnamon bread, which they sell out of quickly. It is really good. Their cookies and macaroons are to die for. My very favorite item is their pizza dough. If you make pizza this makes a consistently outstanding pizza. The dough is so fresh that it stretches out beautifully and it will cook to a crusty, delicious pizza that will be impossible to resist!

I've gotten Antoine's peach, white cake, fresh whipped cream, cake for my birthday every year since middle school easy. I got it again yesterday, and it was still amazing (though it had less peach than I remember it to have). I also got a tiramisu, connoli, and an e'clair and they were all most excellent. All the real Italian dessert-delight, without the headache of the North End.

I know I can always count on Antoine's for delicious pastries outside of the North End. All of the pastries are displayed in glass cases that run the length of the store. I am big fan of their lobster tails and cannoli. Sometimes the cannoli shells are a little cracked, but that happens with homemade vs. factory made shells. Cakes can be pre-ordered. They sell cookies, breads and pasta as well.

Good bakery, but Mike's Pastry beats them hands down. It is not even comparable, but it is good for a local shop so you don't have to go into the city, fight crowds and have no parking. I had a lobster tail and canolli. Lobster tail was delicious, but the canoli was only eh. My friend said the sugar cookies were only ok also.

I'll admit I don't know much about Italian pastries but I felt like I stepped back in time when I walked into this store. I'm sure it was exactly the same 40 years ago. My sons wanted lobster tail pastries. We started a quest around Waltham to find a pastry bakery around 1 pm. We knew it was possible that most places would already be closed. At first we did not consider Antoine's because it was French and we wanted Italian pastries. Arriving first at Domenic's we discovered no suitable pastries - mostly panini and a bread bakery. Country Desserts closed at 1:30 pm so we never got in. We drove next to Icing on the cake but they only sold cakes (it smelled divine in there) but they sent us to Antoine's which was a stone's throw away at that time.
Antoine's had the authentic feel of a bakery/pastry shop. It smelled good and the displays just made your mouth water to view. As it should. The posted hours indicated the location was open until 6 pm ! There was a help wanted sign in the window and it was tempting to apply just to spend more time there. ha ha. We timed it perfectly to arrive when people had just left and before more arrived. I wouldn't say it is crowded on a Saturday afternoon but there is a constant stream of foot traffic and that was encouraging. We parked on the street and put a quarter in the meter which bought us 20 minutes. We were in and out in less than 5 minutes though. We bought four lobster tail pastries and one tiramisu. My sons raved the lobster tails were delicious. I shared my tiramisu with them as, unfortunately, I found it was too dry and tasted old for my tastes. For all those pastries I paid about $14. There were many other pastries to choose from and I will return to try each one!! Nice to have an authentic pastry shop only 2 miles from my house. It's accessible, friendly, not too expensive by my standards, and aside from the tiramisu the quality was worth it. I suspect we arrived too late in the afternoon for the tiramisu to be fresh. -

When I want North End style pastries without N.E. parking headaches, I go to Antoine's. Great ricotta filling wrapped around perfectly crunchy cannoli shells. Always crowd on the weekend and forget about trying to get in the door around Easter. The little Sicilian nonna's can be wicked if they think you are trying to cut in line, just like my nonna. =) They make the most luscious buttercream covered chocolate cake; I begin to shake from the sugar rush after one bite. Awesome!

The best place outside of the North End for Italian pastries. The Ricotta Pie is to die for, the pizzelle (sp?) cookies are light and flakey and the cakes with fresh fruit and whipped cream (strawberry is my fave) are super delicious. Easy parking and nice family owners who seem to know the regulars by name. Can be busy and they sell out of items on Sundays when they get a big after church crowd.

I've been going to this bakery since 1971 when my mom would get our birthday cakes here. As an adult it's my go to place whenever I need desserts, pastry or any house warming gift. The biscotti is perfect, chewy and crunchy. You will never have a Napolean that combines the best of the Italian and French traditions. Paper thin layers of pastry with sweet cream in between. Yummm. In or out of the North End this is by far the best. Mike's hasn't been good for years. It's a tourist trap and they serve mediocre pastry to people who don't know better. Modern is the place to go in the North End, but Antoines is worth the drive and the cost. Get a lobster Tail or a Bismark and you will be in tastebud heaven. Cookies aren't my thing but their Italian assortment is always a hit with coffee at my in-laws. Enjoy! I know I will.
