Review from Diane S.
Seattle, WA
You know, sometimes when I read reviews that other people post
regarding my favorite restaurants, I wonder if they were at the same
place that I always go or if they were in another dimension. The
ideas are just so vastly different, showing how people themselves
differ in tastes. In the end, reading reviews always proves to me
that a review really cannot replace one's own experience. Will you
LIKE this place? Only YOU can determine with your own experience.
Nonetheless, I am going to write a review, because the Antique
Sandwich is such a beloved place for my husband and me and I'd like to
give you a nudge to go there (if you are reading this, you need a bit
of a nudge) and see what YOU think. My husband and I call the Antique
Sandwich our "Sacred Ground:" we were even married on the Antique
Sandwich stage because we met at this wonderful spot in the 1980s, and
reconnected there in 2008. It was the perfect place for us to get
married.
I think the main thing that sets the Antique Sandwich apart from any
other restaurant, for me, is their involvement with the community.
The Antique does this in a number of subtle and not-so-subtle ways.
Just one example of many: they host Victory Music Open Mikes weekly,
and now the Ancient Victorys Open Mikes once a quarter. And if you
are a music fan, Antique Sandwich Open Mikes are the jewel in the
crown of Open Mikes, and are well known, near and far, for being so.
Locals come to the Antique because of its home-away-from-home feel...
that third place other than your home and your place of work, if you
will. Family-friendly, all-sorts-of-ages friendly, casual... it's
just the best place to meet up with friends. Do you want to be a part
of a community? You can be here. Most of my best friends were met
within these hallowed, cozy, familiar rooms.
I think the food is delicious. You know it's all homemade, right? The
selections are healthy and tasty, and I am of the kind that prefers
healthy food. The sandwiches are HUGE, and chock
full of whatever you have chosen for the innards. I love the dark rye
bread on sandwiches here... it's like no other: soft, very dark and
savory. I love the soups. The spinach lasagna is a delectable treat,
and I often get the hummus and pita for a light meal that is simply
wonderful. The desserts are INCREDIBLE. My particular favorite
dessert OF ALL TIME is the Antique's gingerbread: thick slabs of dark,
rich, spicy-sweet-but-not-too-sweet-cakey gingerbread. I have it
warmed with whipped cream melting down the sides. Ahhhh... my
favorite! Other friends of mine love the cheesecake, or the pies, but
once I had the gingerbread I have never ordered anything else. I just
believe my friends when they rave about the other desserts. (My
husband particularly is a fan of the milkshakes, which are served in
fountain glasses with the extra in a metal can, the old-fashioned way
of making REAL milkshakes. He gets chocolate-peanut butter shakes.
I'd do it, if I could get away with the calories.)
So try it yourself. But know when you here at the Antique you are
with owners who really value providing a meeting place for community.
They have our wholeHEARTed gratitude for that. -

Tacoma, WA
I stopped in here with a friend while on our way to Point Defiance. We wanted coffee. I had passed by this shop a dozen times and never gone in, so my coffee visit, this past weekend, has been my first impression. This place is huge. I did not expect there to be so many tables, or so many people. When driving past i always thought it would be small inside.
There does not seem to be table service. You order at the register and then they bring it to you. We ordered our coffee at the counter, and then were directed to a self service coffee area. They make espresso drinks that are ordered but regular coffee is self serve.
I was expecting the weak, see through coffee generally served at diners, but it was better than that. I drink my coffee black, so it has to stand up on its own with out and added mild or sugar. It's not the best cup of coffee I've had, but it was decent.
Over all I will have to say that I want to go back and try more menu items. And i will go back too. The one thing that I loved about this place were the people. The staff was very polite and welcoming. That is the most important part of any restaurant. I left this place feeling happy, and wanting to return. Great customer service is always key! -

I first went to the Antique in 1990, during an Open Mike one Tuesday. Sort of like walking through a portal to another life. The atmosphere, music, people, staff and food were just perfect. They support an amazing open mike on Tuesdays going back to the 80's (70's?) and have fostered (along with Victory Music) a close and loyal community of musicians and fans. The food I have had there has always been great. I agree The Antique is not for everyone, but that is a good thing. Variety and options make life worth living. It is unique and very special place.

New York, NY
My love and I stopped here for lunch and respite while exploring the Pacific Northwest, roadtrip style. This place is like the funky aunt you wish you had, who feeds you healthy, homemade, delicious, lunches while telling you crazy stories about their life that all turn out to be true. While noshing on clam chowder and salad and a bagel (with sprouts!), we overheard a middle aged couple on a first date. We saw a bus driver get off his bus and order lunch here, and the ladies behind the counter knew him by name. We did a crossword puzzle and read our horoscopes. And then we ordered a chocolate espresso milkshake cause all the kids were doing it AND it was served in a frosty, milkshake glass with extra milkshake on the side in the tall silver milkshake maker cup. One glass. Two straws. Then we drove around the Northwest, daydreaming about buying land and growing vegetables.

This used to be my second home in Tacoma, where I HAD to be every Tuesday night for open mike or my life was not complete. Cozy and inviting, like a favorite friend. It was so lovely to come back after years of being in Seattle and too rarely back to find the Antique as wonderful as ever. My often picky son ate every SPECK of his quiche, and such a rare treat to find a salad with something more than just lettuce, an actual meal. Now if you are looking for a sterile white chain restaurant or something brand new and formula, don't walk into a place named "The Antique" . If you want community, healthy and generous food, great coffee and a place I would feel great about my son hanging out and playing while I sip on the couch, this is your home.

Food is average at best. Sandwiches, soups, salads: pretty run-of-the-mill choices. Fresh ingredients but nothing out of the ordinary in terms of flavors, combinations...even portion sizes are disappointing in their mediocrity. Everything I have ever ordered from Antique Sandwich Co. (I have been here a few times) seems like food I could have made myself for a sliver of the price. Yes, they are overpriced. If the food was good, I might be more convinced to shell out $10. But we're talking about a sandwich here.
What about the ambience, you ask? Well, the atmosphere is almost cool. It's almost comfortable, and almost homey, and it just almost makes you want to hang around in there. It's a mix of the library in your grandmother's house and maybe an antique store. -

We stopped in here after a trip to the zoo. (Love the zoo!)
First impression: Old and somewhat filthy. And by somewhat filthy, I mean having the feeling that I wanted to Purell my hands every 5 minutes. The tables and chairs were sticky and the seats were ripped. Heard of sanitizing?? The toys there for the children to play with (though the thought was appreciated) were so dirty, even my daughter looked at them skeptically. Being that this is flu season, shouldn't there be an effort to make plush white toys, white and non-grey and legos non-sticky?
The woman that "helped" us seemed to be irritated that we asked questions. As if we should have already known the ritual and what was available. Huge thumbs down.
The sandwiches were okay - nothing to write home about, but $19 for three half sandwiches and a tiny (and I mean tiny) glass of lemonade? Ridiculous.
I will not be back, nor will I suggest anyone going here. Especially without a big bottle of Purell. -

Tacoma, WA
This place is so expensive for the type of food that they have. I don't want to eat something that I could have made at home myself. I was not happy about the food, the wait to get the food, or the fact that I had to wait for the owner to get off of the phone, because until she was off of the phone they could not run my card. I was also disappointed that there weren't many antiques around the store.
There are much better places to eat in that area, so I suggest that you look around.
I do not plan on going back. -

Tacoma, WA
Being a native New Yorker from Manhattan, I've had run ins with good food, bad food, and everything in between.
I have to agree that the prices are overpriced. I just went here recently and paid $20 for two sandwiches. I'm definitely not happy with the prices, but I try to keep in mind that they are small business, the economy sucks, yadda yadda ya ... Either way, the portions are good, and if you order a turkey sandwich you get real turkey. Not deli meat (take that Jimmy John's/Subway). The avocado is fresh and the lemon tahini salad dressing is by far my favorite.
My only complaint is I wish they dusted the place once in a while, and maybe give a good vacuum to the carpet too. I'm not sure if they toast bread, but it's definitely worth asking because sometimes leftovers can be soggy from the tomato.
Also, I've noticed people complaining about a couple things:
a) If you have an issue with all the mayo just say something. You have the right to ask for them to go easy on the mayo. Or don't order mayonnaise (get mustard instead) because mayo is disgusting to begin with. If you also have an issue with all the bean sprouts, you should ask for less too. Or if bean sprouts isn't your thing, maybe go somewhere else.
b) It's pretty much self-serve at ASC, so I'm not sure how much customer service people are expecting. If you need something, ask for it. They'll kindly oblige.
c) Employees with bad attitudes? I'm a little confused about this because I've NEVER had an issue with the employees giving myself or anyone I know attitude. They've always been perfectly courteous.
d) Yes, it's a little dirty. But the tables are clean and so are the restrooms. If the bathrooms are clean, so is everything else. Well, maybe except for the kids' toys, but how is that any different than letting your kid run around in the local playground or at daycare? Think about it.
Overall, I like ASC. They're a good place to go to every once in awhile. If you're not an ASC-fair-trade type of person you might want to hit up Magic Sandwich Makers, but don't say I didn't warn you that MSM is dirty. In fact, much dirtier than ASC. -

I came to this place in 1992 on a trip out west and I'm so glad to see it's still open. I can't remember the exact sandwich I had when I was there but I liked it a lot. The antiques were very cool and it was a very comfy place. I can't wait to go back some day!

People love this place. it seems like it is the talk of the town, and yet, I never realize why. maybe its because the first time I was meeting with a friend of mine to "break-up" with her and the other time I went it was during my gluten-free season. So maybe, if you arent gluten free and you actually like the people you are with then this will be a great place for you.
Ordered: I have had the meatloaf sandwich and more recently the chili. Boy i was with had a ham and cheese sandwich and a chocolate shake.
Pros:
-It is a Tacoma must.
-Staff was nice. Not overly....just enough, though
-Choc shake was amazing
-the ham sandwich was big and full of ham.
Cons
-they didnt offer cheese on the chili so I had to ask them for it.
-The counter was stacked high with dirty dishes leaving a kind of gross feeling when getting water or napkins
-There were no bins for dirty dishes and I wasn't sure if I bussed the table or not
-Not ideal for gatherings of 2. all tables are huge....
-chili was okay, but an hour later I forgot if it was good or not. I think it reminded me of Nallys chili. but it was cheap, so I shouldn't complain.
-It is definitely antique....which maybe that is why I don't like it. It feels dirty. -

Groovy baby... you'll love the food, the place may weird you out a bit but, the service is good. If you expecting a Subway or Quiznos this is not your place. However, if want unique go to Antique,

Hippie vibe...salads, sandwiches, fair trade items for sale. I like the big salads (with tahini dressing) and the homemade desserts. The downside--poor wireless strength. The upside--proximity to Point Defiance.

I am not a long time customer, so I don't know how good this place was before. But it works for me. ASC reminds me of a college town hippie sandwich shop, except it's not close to any college, maybe UPS. I know I'm only giving 3 stars, but I LOVE this place. Organic goodies, whole wheat bread, fresh pies and desserts, abundant seating in old burgundy velvet victorian chairs, in an old building that looks like a western ghost town. Also have really good espresso and drinks.
The food, I don't know, seems a little bland depending on what you order. I've eaten here 3 times, and each time is a spread of 2-4 stars.Listed in: Cafes

This place should be so much better.
Coming from NorCal, I was REALLY looking forward to a homegrown sandwich place that is super fresh and super tasty with a little bit of "we need to take care of eachother" vibe. It has the now aged children of the revolution, it has the REALLY AWESOME PEOPLE THAT WORK THERE, and it has the stuff made by starving children you can buy.
But it doesn't have any onomonopias.
No zips, bangs, pops, whooshes, wooos, etc.
The sandwiches are so lackluster, the desserts are good but not mindblowing, and everything tastes like what you make when you're TRYING to be healthy, but really sucking at it.
I was hoping to taste the liberalism in my sandwich.
PLUS
The space is UNBELIEVEABLE.
AND THEY DON'T DO SQUAT WITH IT.
Sure they have the classical sundays and the 4 chord folk/blues rifffest on tuesdays, but THIS SHOULD BE AMAZING. It could have art, and books, and lights, and a carousel. Instead, it just feels empty.
If your in this area, make your own sandwich and picnic in Point Defiance. It'll taste the same -

My wife still craves their sandwiches and atmosphere. :)
We met some friends here and visited for a light dinner before hiking around the zoo for Zoo Lights.
We were all really please with the food. The table ordered a variety of things; from salads, soups, sandwiches, to just chips. We all enjoyed our food and everyone except the 2 kids finished theirs. :)
The salads are huge, the sandwiches come on very fresh bread and they had a huge variety of foods to satisfy vegetarians.
We will go back and visit. :)
Oh, and there is a small stage area that is a play place for kids. Buckets of toys are strewn about it. The atmosphere is very cozy and it seems a great place to have a tea or coffee and chat with a friend. -

So we headed to the Antique Sandwich Co. this afternoon for lunch... and I've got really mixed feelings about it all... I mean, the food, the food was really good -- the soup we had was delicious and the sandwiches were quite good, everything in them seemed really fresh and tasty. But... the two of us paid over $20 for 2 sandwiches, a bowl of soup, a scone and a cookie. And these were sandwiches that we certainly could have made ourselves, at home...
Nevertheless, I really did like my experience there. The staff were reasonably nice, it wasn't too slow of service and the food was really really good, for what it is. Four stars it is -- five it would have been if the meal had been $3-5 cheaper. -

Bremerton, WA
I went into the Antique Sandwich Shop after seeing good reviews here on Yelp. I had the avocado, cheese and sprouts sandwich with a side salad and a piece of blueberry cheesecake for dessert. The sandwich was excellent; the bread was soft, the cheese was delicious, and the avocado was awesome. The side salad was accompanied by some pine nuts on top which was a very nice touch. The cheesecake was the best I have ever had in my life, hands down. I will definitely be going back next time I'm in the area.

I have eaten here a handful of times and never been overly impressed. The only thing I really got hooked on was their homemade Green Goddess dressing, which the last 4 times I have been in....they don't have.
I usually get the club on pumpernickel and it is good, but not impressive. The heavy usage of sprouts and mayo needs to be addressed.
As for service, it is seriously lacking. Lacking in customer service and just overall friendliness. You kind of get the feel that these folks really don't like their jobs (or you/me)!
I really hope that they spruce up the place and maybe hire some happier employees. Tacoma could use some more great places. -

First off, let me just say...
Staff is incredibly rude! All anyone ever gets in here is odd looks and rude comments!
But aside from that, the sammiches are dang good! -

Edgewood, WA
Okay place, but definitely pricey. I think I could have gone to Safeway and bought all the ingredients to make my sandwich, and 10 more, for the price I paid for one.
It'd be great if they listed what's in each of their sandwiches, rather than just listing them by type. For me, mayonnaise is Public Enemy Number One, and when I inquired about the ingredients of my proposed sandwich, the super-nice lady didn't mention it. I wish she'd given me a heads-up.
Also, the atmosphere is fairly oppressive. There are very few windows and it feels very cave-like.
Their desserts looked good, and they seemed reasonably-priced. I'd recommend going somewhere else for lunch, and coming to Antique for dessert. That's what I'll be doing next time. -

A good little gem near Tacoma, The Antique Sandwich Company serves great down-to-earth sandwiches and dabbles in coffee. Been several times while visiting relatives in Washington, and haven't had a bad eat yet.
The atmosphere is very quaint, in a beautiful building, with fantastic reclaimed wood artistry lining the wall behind the counter. Posters for various events are pasted all along the wall, and colorful, unique trinkets are all about.
While nothing to die for, Antique Sandwich makes great food with friendly service in a cozy location. -

I ended up here for a long, working lunch. This is a great place for that - big tables, relaxed atmosphere. No one cared that we sat and discussed programming for two hours. Good for groups, pretty kid-friendly, and pretty inexpensive. I ordered a bean burrito and a salad, and spent like $5.50. Their salad dressings are house-made I think, and exquisite.
This is a great example of a beautiful old bar converted to a non-alcohol facility. The giant, solid wood bar completely fills the front half of the restaurant. It might could be heavy-handed or tired if it were still a bar, but the staff is dishing up hippie sandwiches and milkshakes from back there. It seems quirky instead of blah. There was tons of (weak) natural light on a gray PNW March afternoon.
This is pretty typical NW aging hippie food, sandwiches, a daily quiche, some burritos. Menu items seem to have time-traveled from the days when "vegetarian" meant "sprouts, hummus & cheese." Sprouts are not a bad thing, but you know, I outgrew my sprouts and hummus sandwich cravings about 10 years ago. Anyway, there are lots of vegetarian options, a very delicious black bean burrito drowning in cheese, and passably good milkshakes. I would go out of my way to lunch here again, or stop by for a picnic on the way to the zoo with the kids. -

Gladstone, OR
I've only had the veggie sandwich (I'm not a vegetarian) - I get it each and every time because I love it and it's a huge sandwich. It comes with a salad option and it's big enough for two meals for me unless I'm starving. They keep out plenty of free water and lemon. There's usually a selection of 4-5 desserts.
There's also an outside eating area, although it's not particularly pretty - it's good for letting the kids run around though. Inside, there's a few (older) high chairs and lots of toys for kids.
Before/after eating here we usually go to the plant nursery across the street or, if it is closed, walk around the outside plantings. It's also a good place to stop near the zoo, and there are antique shops nearby for browsing. -
Review from Andy P.
I think Benjamin really has a nice review of ASC, it's just an old school, hippie kind of place. They make everything there pretty much. Most things are organic, or natural in some fashion. I like their multi-grain waffles a lot and think they really have a lot going for them.
Their location in Ruston is really at the jump-off point for a lovely drive around the Tacoma waterfront and a lot of Saturday mornings I went over there, had a waffle and went for a drive. Now that I live in Dallas (cue Babs' "The Way We Were") it seems like a heavenly experience to go to a place like this (very Northwest, 1983) and take a drive down along Ruston Way.
Anyway, the sum up is this: Vegetarian-Friendly, natural foods oriented, hippie, but not in an oppressive way (most patrons are normal Tacomans), Tacoma (fine, Ruston, whatever) institution serving up good sandwiches and breakfast goods in a very traditional way. If that sounds good to you... you're going to like this place a lot. -

I enjoyed a 5 star lunch on a five star day. Suzie and I stopped here for lunch a few miles into lovely bike ride on a warm June day. We ordered, then sat outside at a table in a side yard surrounded by roses, cherry trees and honeysuckle. The drinks (caramel latte and apple-berry juice) were perfect! I had the quiche, which came with a fresh side salad.
It was delightful, really. A few years ago I used to play at their open mic on Tuesdays, which I assume they still have. -

Hubby and I come here as often as we can when we're in town. It's one of our favorite places to grab lunch, especially on the weekdays. On the weekends, yes, it's super crowded, but what do you expect when it's a popular place to eat? Hello?
Anyway, I'm a fan of their rye bread, baked goodies, hot cocoa, and salads. Portions are quite generous, and worth the price and wait. I'm never disappointed!
They also have a great little play area for those eating with little ones. -

Tacoma, WA
This place is a landmark in Tacoma and I finally ate dinner here after living in the city for years. I think it's more well known for it's Tuesday night open-mike nights than it's dinner. I was skeptical by the looks of things, it's definitely a bit shabby, but the food was so scrumptious! The service was quick and friendly. It was non-greasy comfort food that made us feel better instead of worse after we ate. Our side salads were extremely fresh, like from the farmers market or just picked in the yard. My fiance had the turkey enchiladas and I had a warm turkey sandwich on rye. It was soo delicious. The meat wasn't the typical salty deli meat, it was really great quality fresh food. The sandwich was perfectly simple letting the real flavors of the food out, not overdone. For dessert, a real peanut butter milkshake and homemade blackberry peach pie. YUM!

Port Orchard, WA
Food: Overpriced for what you get. Sandwiches with healthy options, chips - standard sandwich shop items.
Atmosphere: Odd. Granola with a hint of hood. Kinda dilapidated interior.
Child warning: They do not accommodate children. Bring your own child cup in with you - otherwise they'll get a glass. They do have toys present here but I wouldn't let my daughter play with them because they obviously hadn't been cleaned in ages. Sit in the front of the restaurant and avoid the conflict.
My biggest impression: an opportunity lost. This place - with improved quality of food, staff and interior could generate so much more in revenue and become a real neighborhood gem. -

The Veggie Sandwich is amazing! There is something magical about the sandwiches here....I think it might be the shredded cheese. Simple but effective.
The atmosphere is quirky and very northwest. Statues, worn carpets and mismatched furniture. The old fashioned bar behind the counter is lovely. The only thing I wish they would nix is the "kids" area. It's huge and tacky. Of course, I'm not a fan of kids, so......
Yes, it is a bit slow and yes it is not the cheapest sandwich, but it's tasty, very "Tacoma", homey and fun. For me, it's worth the money.
Oh, and I have never found the staff to be rude. They are not going to kill you with fake kindness, like people in the South, but they are perfectly friendly. -

This is a lovely place. It's artsy without the fartsy, sophisticated without the pretension, and manages to match its atmosphere with its menu. The only complaint that I can really make is that they have good profit margins. That is, good for them. But this isn't an everyday sort of place. It's for brunch with friends, and it's not too excessively priced (or under-portioned in quantity) to do the job.

Just went on Sunday when they were SUPER busy and my avocado sandwich has so much mayo on it I had to scrape it off the bread & wash off the tomatoes. I love mayo but that made me nauseated to look at it, plus it made my bread soggy within 5 minutes. Eeww. Plus, too much sprouts.

For anyone visiting the Point Defiance Zoo, this is a very nice place to stop for lunch. You can get a nice, healthy sandwich with stuff like sprouts, avocado, turkey, rye bread, etc. It's basically a soup and sandwich cafe style joint, but, the place also has a very nice vibe where there's a toy area for the kids during the daytime, and a stage for contemporary folk music at night. I like that. It's definitely a gem worth going to if your looking for a place near the zoo.
