Quiet place with good drinks and strong Wifi. It is not super brightly lit inside, so it is relaxing to be in there. Cool temperature.
I liked it. I'll be back! -

Whaaat?!!! A place where I can get my iced latte AND platanos y frijoles.. YES! Not a 5-star yet, I need to try it out more before that.
I had been here once before for coffee but never looked up a their expansive menu. I wasn't feeling too hungry today so I had a veggie burrito and it was fantastic. Good variety of veggies with a nice grilled taste.
Service was fine. It has waiters but not really waiters. Like, you get a number and they bring you your food but they don't actually wait on the tables so don't expect that. It a coffee house so walk up and ask for what's missing and/or wrong.
One note: walls are painted a dark red so the place it a bit dark for reading. -

I just moved to Highland Parque. And no I am not one of those gentrifying people - just a hard working Angeleno that saved up to buy her first home. So it was important to introduce myself to the local food talent in the new hood.
Antigua Bread was my first neighborhood food experience in my new hood. I had a soy latte and chilaquiles. Amazeballs! I was hooked ever since. I have returned many a weekend to get my fix before I work out or just to start the weekend off right.
Free wifi - but seems to have a pretty decent turnaround even when the hipsters/chipsters start to wake up from their stupor.
The staff have always been great - so not sure about all the complaints about service. -

Considering we have lots of shitty fast food places in Highland Park, this place is a diamond in the rough. Actually it's like when you work with a bunch of ugly people. Day in, day out, nothing but uggos everywhere. Then after a year that chick with the sort-of nice ass starts to look REALLY hot. But actually, in any other setting she would be like a 4.5, maybe a 5... This place is that chick.
all insensitive humor aside...This place is a great local cafe. Good coffee, good pastries, good service and delicious breakfast served all day. GREAT prices. I love this place. It's not fancy or pretentious, its not super amazing but it's good. I'm glad to have a place like this in my hood. And you can use the wi-fi from the restaurant next door. -

Los Angeles, CA
Let me start by saying I wanted to love this place. I popped in once and got a great coffee. The vibe was lovely, the pastries looked good. It seemed like a solid spot. Then, another day, I went back for brunch - that's where the problems started.
We placed our order, we sat outside. Then we waited. Waited. And waited. I went back in to check on the order. The server had clearly forgotten to put it through, but promised it was coming soon. Half of it came out, but we didn't all get our orders. We went back in to query it and were told it was coming - except it didn't. She'd forgotten what we'd ordered and how many people were in our party. So after a 40 minute wait, we had to re-order one meal, while the two of us who by now had eaten, waited.
To be fair, they did rush the final forgotten order through. But by now, whatever the food was like, we had a bad taste in our mouths.
It's fine to make mistakes, and I totally get that things like this happen. But it would have been much better if it had been owned right away and an apology had been given - instead, it was poorly covered up with a surly attitude. We were all left with a feeling that they didn't really care.
I'll go back for coffee, but will definitely take it to go... -

A couple of my friends go here on a regular basis and they keep mentioning their omelettes.. So finally, I made it an obligation to have a supposedly savory breakfast dish.
Antigua Omelet: obvious eggs covering bacon, sausage, jack cheese, tomatoes, onions.. and came with potatoes on the side. This was more of a gourmet/delicate omelet with the typical ingredients and tasted no much different.. It was good but nothing special. On the other hand, the potatoes were well seasoned and were little chopped cubes of tasty little treats! Portioned appropriately for one person.
Breakfast Burrito: Very similar to the omelet mentioned above, but went with only sausage (no bacon). Same more gourmet take, rather than the get your grub on burrito.. Although it could've been split with 2 not so hungry people.
Staff was nice, The decor was suprisingly inviting given the location of the place, Prices were okay and maybe the pastries they had behind the glass counter would of been more of a hit?.. Cool spot but many other places that I would rather munch on a prefered hearty breakfast. -

A haven of cheap eats..your $$ stops here. Decidedly decent quality for a full meal (including beverage) under $10. Yes, apparently getting your money's worth is still possible in LA; you just have to know where to go.
We were there for a "happy hour" gathering of sorts..and took advantage of their special dinner menu, which offers burger/fries, chicken parmigiana, fajitas, club sandwich, and basically all salads, for $4.95 each. Really? Did they forget the "1" between the "$" and "4"? The skeptic in me had some serious doubts about this supposed bargain. But, as it was recommended by a friend who frequents this place (no food poisoning or other tummy troubles thus far and apparently he comes here A LOT)..I put my misgivings aside and went for the burger.
Verdict: decent. Obviously not the best burger I've ever had but it was edible and a good deal at $4.95. My friends ordered the chicken parmigiana and fajitas and those seemed on par with the burger. Let me just say though that the real value comes in portion size. They absolutely do not believe in skimping at this place. All in all, a worthwhile meal.
Other than their special dinner menu, Antigua seems to be known for their breakfasts and coffee/tea beverages. Their coffee was enjoyable so another visit to sample their breakfasts and pastries is definitely on the radar.
If you find yourself in the area starving with nothing more than $5 in your pocket, fret not. Just walk yourself over to Antigua and fill that tummy! -

I love this place and I reviewed this in 2010 with a 5 rating That review still stands with two changes. I am dropping the rating to 4 only because they have cut their hours way back. I used to go here in the evenings a lot, but they close at 8PM (or before) and at 5 PM on Sundays. The food is still really good and service is also good, but don't get here much any more because of the earlier hours.

this place has amazing breakfasts and coffee and coffee type drinks
I've been coming here for a few years (since it opened) and I have never been disappointed, not once.
Their food is great...very fresh and healthy...it tastes like the way I like to cook - good and healthy and tasty..not too greasy...but yummy
the service is excellent too and I love the fact that they always have beautiful upbeat Latin music playing...always makes me wanna dance! -
Review from KAREN H.
A great addition to Highland Park. This neighborhood has predominantly hispanic bakeries, tacquerias, and 99 cent stores. It's really nice to see an independently owned coffee shop taking a chance in this type of neighborhood. It a nice place to stop in for a cup of joe or meet a friend if you are in the area.
I love the rustic brick interior. And the dark wood furniture.
Food:
I have tried mainly their breakfast items. Their Huge breakfast burrito with meat, potatoes, egg, and cheese is a like 5.99. Also omelette plates with side of toast and potatoes are the about 6 bucks also. If you go to Corner Bakery or something you are looking at $10+ for a breakfast meal. Not only are the portions good but the food tastes good also.
The bread and pastry section is very limiting. They have the very basic Mexican breads. Nothing in that section has caught my eye.
Their lattes are great. Coffee has good bold flavor. I make it here for a soy latte almost every morning.
I'm kinda glad that Starbucks didn't take the risk in opening here ..
The only thing that bothers me a little is that I come here so often and never get acknowledged by the staff. It's like they act like they never seen me before. And I always order the same thing! lol -

One of my new go-to coffee spots. Great Americanos and lattes, a relaxed, welcoming vibe, and a cute outdoor patio for chillage or a meeting. Not ridiculously loud or pretentious, just solid java in a nice setting. Seems to be something of a little community hub, too, which is also cool in my book.

Good cheap food. Love their green enchiladas. Good coffee and pastries, chill spot. The staff/service is not the best, but if you can ignore that and just enjoy the atmosphere and the food, it's a pretty cool place

I might have just had my perfect Sunday and Antigua helped me get it started. I was meeting my cute Salvi friend for breakfast and he picked Antigua and there it was. We had some great coffee, for a normal price, and a tasty burrito for cheap. mmmm, chorizo. My friend had a croissant sandwich and thought is was great.
The place was really adorable and staff was friendly. We arrived at 10:30 and there were plenty of tables. When we left an hour later, the place was crowded with all different types of people. Families, teens and those more anonymous like myself. Looking forward to my next time.Listed in: Favorite Dates

We came here for their "happy hour" because my friend comes here often for their $4.95 meals. When he told me about it, I was hesitant, because how good can a $4.95 meal be? And he's not really a foodie, so I was really skeptical. But I always love a deal, so I decided to give it a try. I was surprised that they actually offer real meals for $4.95, ranging from salads to chicken parmigiana and burger and fries. I ordered the burger and fries and it was ok...cheaper than any fast food restaurant actually. It wasn't the best burger I've had, but it was decent! I was just happy that I only spent about $7 total (including a drink) for dinner. Now that's hard to find anywhere in LA! Who wouldn't come back?

Antigua is a reliable neighborhood spot that will always get you some basic quality foods that will fill your tummy and give you the best value for your buck. I love that I can walk over to Antigua and get me an Ultimate Antigua Breakfast with an 8oz steak, two eggs, black beans, platanos fritos and queso fresco with a side of tortillas for just 10 bucks! And that's the most expensive breakfast item on the menu! It's a hearty breakfast lovers dream.
The omelettes are unremarkable but are tasty and do their job. I also love the fact that we are supporting a true neighborhood institution whose owners have serious love for the local community. :-)
bring your laptop and grab a coffee and pastry, or head to the outdoor patio and see what local color you can observe while you dine on your Ameri/Latino food.Listed in: Highland Park Haunts

i LOVE this place. I mean I really LOVE this place.
Delicious coffee that doesn't crack me out...great breakfast foods and nice people.
This is definitely one of my top ten brunch spots. If they served mimosas it would be my favorite brunch spot. The chilequiles are fantastic and the boy swears by their burger. -

I recall when Antigua was being built, and I was eager to see what would happen with the place.
Points for having breakfast available all day. Had their breakfast burrito which is quite filling, as well as more traditional breakfast fare. I wasn't disappointed with any of these. The pastries are tasty. The coffee is pretty good
Antigua is SO convenient to the Gold Line stop for Highland Park (it's literally a block away around the corner). There is also parking around the corner.
The only complaint I have about this place is that it doesn't stay open as late as I'd hope. I'm sure more people would hang out if it was. -

I've been going here for about a year now and the food just gets better and better. I highly recommend the carne asada plate. Their hamburgers and chicken sandwiches are pretty good as well.
The servers are very friendly and I always leave a tip in the jar at the front. I recommend this place but it does get crowded pretty quickly. -
Review from Carol L.
Breakfast is yummy, filling and cheap, with everything costing less than $10. Plus their coffee and espresso drinks are great!
My friend and I recently came here and split two of their breakfasts:
* ANTIGUA BREAKFAST - Three eggs, black beans, plantanos fritos, crema, queso fresco, salsa fresca and tortillas or bread.
* CHILAQUILES - Tortilla chips topped with two eggs, queso fresco, cilantro and onions with a choice of green or red enchilada sauce. Served with rice and pinto beans.
I liked their black beans more than the pinto beans. My friend asked for the eggs to be scrambled into the chilaquiles and they obliged. The green sauce was really good, as was the rice. I was very happy with both dishes!
The also offer American style breakfasts...
From their bakery case, we snagged their last BLUEBERRY AND PEACH DANISH. The blueberries and peach slices sit on top of a cream cheese based custard. Make sure to get one of these if they have them! -

Really sorry to be writing this as am new to the area and this place looked so good! Perhaps if I give it a go at a less busy time I can up my stars on this review. Unfortunately, we had a pretty rubbish experience this weekend. We waited over 45mins for a simple breakfast, went up to ask where it was, told it was coming, then when it eventually arrived, they had forgotten one of the orders. Some of the food was cold and by that point we just wanted to leave. Very frustrating and sad as was super excited about going there after all the great reviews....Gave it 2 stars because it has a lovely atmosphere and outdoor dining.

I have been here about a dozen times, and I am never disappointed. I come at least once every two weeks for a lunch/study session. Their iced vanilla latte is smooth & not too sweet, and you know I can't pass up an iced chai tea latte, which I loved. The steak torta is so tasty. Guacamole is fresh & steak is tender. YUM!
I've also ordered the chicken tenders. They're nothing to rave about, but the kid in me enjoys the real chicken taste to these tenders. And considering the location, I come here because it's clean & the service is great! -

It is loud and cramped, and often busy so they must be doing something right. But I think most go because of its current deco, local and consistent, not because it is fantastic. The food is fine, but you can get same if not better, at many of the local restaurants/cafe.
The coffee and service is always better at Antigua Cultural Coffee House at 3400 N Figueroa St (not a big food menu but anything they offer, from my experience has been great). -

Q.T.: BREAD PUDDING!!! Recently went here for "Marienda" (early evening snack before dinner) and got an ice coffee and their version of bread pudding. 1st thing I notice it was sliced up like a pie not the traditional bar. Man, this thing was GOOD! Kinda like half bread pudding, half flan. It wasn't too sweet, most of the sweetness came from the coconut jam that they use on top! Goooooosh! Soooo goood! I was fortunate to get the last piece, Lord knows, I coulda eat the whole thing!

Antigua Bread is simply...okay. I have always been curious about this place every time I exit the freeway and toward Figueroa.
Parking is located in the back, so don't let the alley scare you. These alleys usually scare anyone who is not from around these parts, but simply put there is not much to fear.
The decor is nice. Modern, hip, and the nice tones of oranges, reds, and browns. I came here looking for something sweet, like their pastries, but I was informed their pastries are best served fresh and in the morning, and since I came in for a mid-afternoon lunch, there were no pastries in sight.
I ordered an iced, soy chai latter which was decent and an order of chicken fingers which came with fries. Unfortunately both my chicken fingers and fries were soaked with enough oil to lack flavor. I do not normally use ketchup, but in this case, I did.
My friend ordered a soy latte and she felt the same about her meal. Her BLT was oily, and nothing too amazing about her sandwich. Her fries were also soggy with oil.
Still, I guess it's an okay place and I am willing to give it another try. It is nice to see an attractive place in this part of town, and I hope that next time I return I will have a better food (and hopefully get my pastry on) experience. -

It's hard to believe it took me so long to visit this place when its so close to me. This place is great, it looks like how Starbucks wishes they did if they were a bit more authentic.
The foods with sandwiches, burgers, and enchiladas, the food isn't exactly the most exotic but there's just something delightful about a perfectly made Chicken Pesto Sandwich.
Staff also seems super friendly, I love this place. -

I have not been disappointed by Antigua Bread yet and setting up for high expectations, I don't think they will. Even though this one is closer to me than the one on Huntington Blvd location, I frequent the farther one more often. Their dinner special is a steal and I love their Antigua burger with that thick cut of maple applewood bacon.
will I return?
I return every other week! -

Blehh,
We came here the other night.
My bf wanted to see what "my people" eat, sooo we stopped here since we were nearby.
We got here at 8:04.. 8:04.. the doors were open, there were a couple people sitting down.
Then the girl at the front says..
"were closed at 8", in the most obnoxious, rude way. BOOO!
Sounds like im being sensitive. But, no.
I'm really not the person to rant... Ever. I digress.
I might try their other location. But as long as that girl is working here. I wont be back. Or maybe we'll get there at 7:59 :) -
Review from Andrew H.
since i only swung by for a coffee and a pastry, i don't feel like i can properly assess the rest of the prepared food, though it did look delicious. my friend and i were just looking to kill some time and decided that a nice conversation over a light breakfast would be nice.
with some outdoor seating available, antigua bread provides plenty of seating and a quiet atmosphere where you can just sit, enjoy a nice brew, nibble on some food, and just relax for a few minutes or a few hours. overall, it had all the makings for a quality coffee house. -

Morro Bay, CA
well, I really don't need to add much, as they're already hitting 4-5 w/ most, so you know this place is good. just do yourself a favor and, before you die, make sure to have the chilaquiles and a vanilla americano. oh, green sauce on the 'quiles.
Not sure why it is, but the powdered vanilla they use is flippin amazing. never had anything quite like it, and the best part is, I don't say anything when i order, they know what i want and just ring it up. love it when the only question i get is "do you want the chilaquiles?" I know maybe it's boring and predictable, but i like it when a place remembers you and treats you like family.
so, 2 stars for food, 1 for ambiance, 1 for cleanliness (cleanest place you'll find in highland park), and 1.5 for staff that truly know how to be friendly. 5.5 stars, but YP only allows 5, so 5 they get. go there, today. now. get in your car, blow stoplights. hurry. -

Los Angeles, CA
Situated next to the long-time running Las Cazuelas is this recent gem. I have been here many times, and I keep coming back and inviting friends. While it isn't going to challenge the likes of Elements Kitchen or Auntie Ems in terms of ambiance or menu choices, it nonetheless does an excellent job with many classics. Including: the tuna melt, the cheesesteak, and the club sandwich.
Perhaps my favorite part of this spot, however, is trying out their assortment of lattes and mochas. I make it a point to try something new each time I visit, and I have seldom been disappointed (and even then it was only because I preferred the hot version of the drink to the cold).
Staff can be hit or miss, ranging from very friendly and talkative, to "let's keep the line moving" level of indifference. But overall, no real complaints. The place is kept clean continuously, so there won't be any traces of foods form previous visitors on any chairs or tables.
Parking can be found nearby by the meters, or simply the lot in the back (the cheaper alternative, also the smarter one as there is rarely a full lot).
As I said, I make it a point to bring friends here when we need a quick bite to eat, at a reasonable price, without having to shell out big money or make reservations an hour ahead. -

La Crescenta, CA
This place was decent. I decided to take a nice walk and check it out after reading all the good reviews.
The staff: friendly, but zombified. I can understand it. I hate my job too and I'm not rude, I just look bored. Lulz
The food: It was ok. I ordered the turkey sandwich that came with fries and a drink. Total cost was about $8. Pretty decent price for all of that. The sandwich was just standard turkey and cheddar on a really thick french bread type of thing. It was good, but I could've made it at home.
The atmosphere: I liked this part the best. I sat outside and enjoyed the day. Seemed like all the patrons here were pretty low-key and down to earth.
I'd come here again. Maybe I'll just have coffee (decaf now...wah!) and write. Cute place. -

***3.5 stars***
This place is definitely a coffee shop first before a brunch spot. Coffee and service here are solid but their food is nothing to go holy frijoles over.
Sandwiches are decent and comes with a generous portion of fries. Heck, they're still better than the pre-packaged ones you find at Starbucks. Costs about the same too. The breakfast scrambles here are okay too...and the portions are sufficient. Prices are extremely fair. Comfortable indoor/outdoor seating.
Service is superb and genuine....which kinda surprises me since they don't rely on tip here too much. I totally see the 4-plus star Yelp rating potential in Antigua but it's just not quite there yet. I think its kitchen needs a little tweaking before that happens. -

I love this place.
They have really good capp's and breakfast here for not a lot of moola. I love stopping by here for something to eat before I hop on the train at the nearby Highland Park station. Everyone who works here are uber friendly. They have free wifi here as well, and you can stay here for as long as you want. This is a good neighborhood joint. -
Review from Randy M.
Los Angeles, CA
A lot of reviewers just don't get it. A new business comes along, and they expect the moon to be delivered to them on a plate. Admittedly, I am on occasions one of these people. But for the most part, I realize that with any new business- especially food service, there are always kinks to iron out.
There is a lot of untapped potential at Antigua Bread, and I expect to not only see things improve, but possibly write an update in about a year's time. In the meantime, here are some suggestions directly to the business, which I give in my former-professional opinion, which would improve their establishment.
1. Stop buying cheap supplies from Smart & Final. They are the retail-consumer equivalent to Sysco, and it definitely shows in the quality of your food items. Instead...
2. Buy locally. Every Tuesday, right behind Antigua, is Farmer's Market. As a matter of fact, during other days of the week, there are Farmer's Markets within easy driving distance. Go to them, and buy directly from the people that grow the food. The quality of product will be better, the chances of a strange breakout of e. coli will be lessened, and the taste will generally be a whole lot better.
3. While diversity is normally a great thing, the menu is all over the place. Simplify and decide what you want to be, and what you want to serve. Trying to be a café/bakery/coffee shop/restaurant is by and large not a good idea - especially when the business next to you happens to also be serving many of the same items. So scale back the items and concentrate on what your business should be doing foremost- bakery items and beverages. Sure, offer food items, but be picky. If you want to offer items that your neighbor has been making for years, work with them to develop a win-win situation.
4. Pretty, big-tittied baristas are usually appreciated by male customers, but if they don't know the basics, they are a hindrance, not an asset. Get them properly trained on the equipment or get them out of there. (hint: putting a steam nozzle into all the way to the bottom of a container of milk is NOT the proper way to make foam for a cappuccino, latte' or foam in general.)
Other than the above suggestions, Antigua is a pleasant place to grab a coffee, meet up with friends, or enjoy refreshments any time of the year. I hope that the owners will take these suggestions into consideration (especially #4), as that it can make all the difference between a good place and a great place. -
