Great store, love the selection.
So many great home furnishing items...trendy but not over the top, items that you can purchase and have a lifetime, even give to future generations.
The clothes look great...not really my PERSONAL style of clothing, but again, I L.O.V.E. the home furnishings! -

I am quite shocked by the bad reviews - I absolutely LOVE Anthropologie.
1. Customer service. The customer service is always fantastic - the sales associates are warm, friendly, and helpful without being pushy. As soon as I've picked out more than 2 items, a sale associate will ask me if they can get a fitting room started. If I go by myself and need a hand with a zipper, a different size or an extra opinion, the staff is always there for me.
2. Clothes. The clothes are unique and of excellent quality. Yes, they are expensive, but nearly everything eventually goes on sale if you're patient. Try on stuff you like, then check back on the website on Tuesdays. Every Tuesday (sometimes Wednesday), new markdowns are displayed. When your item goes on sale - run to your Anthro and snag it! If the item is on sale on the website but not marked down in the store, tell the sales associate - they honor the website's pricing. After shopping at Anthro, I can't buy from regular boutiques anymore. The quality isn't as good, and neither are their sales. I have gotten countless gorgeous dresses for under $50 because I pounced at the right time.
3. Returns. This place is excellent about returns. As long as the tags are on the garment, it obviously hasn't been worn, and you have a receipt, they will gladly give you a refund - ANY TIME. If you have an Anthro card, you don't even need a receipt. You can own something for years and take it back with no problems, assuming the tags are still on. One reviewer before me stated that a sales associate gave her a hard time about taking off the tag. Well DUH! If you took off the tag, you probably wore the item. I wouldn't take it back either! The lesson there is don't take off the tag unless you're positive you're going to keep it, silly.
4. Website. Anthro has one of the best websites for shopping. Always read the reviews - they're often spot-on. If you're not sure how something will look on an actual person, try to find a review where someone took a picture. This can be wildly helpful. If you buy something and select "Standard Shipping" it will usually arrive in only 4-5 days.
Excellent clothes. Excellent customer service. Enough said. -

This is a beautiful Anthropologie that's quite a bit bigger than my home store in Houston. As everything clothing-related is usually a) too small and b) too pricey for me, I appreciated the fact that the housewares section in this store was quite extensive. There's a whole section just for cabinet and drawer pulls, and I was sorely tempted by some of the beautiful milk glass tumblers on sale. Most random find: an oven mitt that matched an apron I'd bought at another Anthropologie at least three years ago. It was only $12, which is like two cents in AnthroDollars, so I had to get it.
Worth a look if you're in the neighborhood. Right across the store from Waterloo Records and next to Book People, which are also well worth checking out.Listed in: Austin-tatious

Review from Megan M.
I really want to like this store, but there's something just off about it.
One minute, I'm looking at some really cool-looking plates and all of a sudden, I turn around and BAM! There are some fashionable shirts. Oookay. I step around the corner and I see a hat, next to some candles, next to some towels next to some journals next to some wine glasses.
All of it is quirky. Most of it I would like. I'm just thrown off by this kind of identity crisis running around the store. It's like a girl who can't decide which shoes to wear out, so she enlists her husband/child/dog/whatever to help her pick something, but she ends up adding more types and kinds of shoes to the mix. I felt like the husband/child/dog/whatever- optimistic at first, but then semi-frustrated that she couldn't decide on a flipping shoe.
Same thing with the prices. I pick something cute up, expecting it to be maybe under $15 and it turns out to be $30-40. But then I pick something kind of cool up, thinking it might be $20-30 and it ends up being under $15. Wha? I guess it keeps you on your toes?
Also, the employees were absent... well, I mean, I saw them hanging around- and even walked by a few, but I wasn't actually said, "Hello," to until I got to checkout.
So I guess if you're looking for something quirky, it isn't that bad of a store. It might take you a while to find something specific, but at least the store is clean and smells good. -

I will never be able to afford a single item of clothing here, but I love their incredibly beautiful, much more affordable dishes and housewares. Today they were having a big sale. and I scored two gorgeous bowls adorned with birds (I subscribe to the "put a bird on it" philosophy...any Portlandia fans out there?) for under $8 total. I love that their dishes look fragile and handmade, yet are shockingly sturdy and dishwasher/microwave safe.
Marveling at the store's lush decor just puts me in a happy mood and gives me inspiration for colors to wear or ways to decorate my house. Maybe someday I'll actually purchase an item of clothing here...but I doubt it. Most of their clothes are a little too over-the-top bohemian or girly for me, and I can find similar stuff (or last season's stuff) at Target or Goodwill for a fraction of the price. But the bowls and mugs and plates...swoon. -
Review from Jenna W.
The two stars that are present are for the awesome clothes.
The three that are missing are because of the staff. They're awful. I've been in there on multiple occasions when I've been ignored the entire time I've been in the store, without so much as a greeting. As a former retail slave, I know that's a big no-no in retail land.
I was flipping through racks in the sale room the other day, and there was one other customer doing the same thing. An employee came in the sale room, straightened up for a few minutes, and then left. She returned a minute later with another employee, and loudly said, "UGH. THIS ROOM WAS JUST PERFECT, AND NOW IT'S ALL MESSED UP AGAIN", while staring at me and they other customer. We had been gently browsing through racks, definitely not causing much of a mess. We're customers, not freaking tornadoes, how much damage could we really do in under a minute? Way to make your customers feel completely uncomfortable, Anthropologie.
I've shopped at many other Anthropologies and the staff members have always been helpful, so I'm not sure what's up with this location. They need to get their act together, because although their clothes are fabulous, they're not worth getting put down by the staff. Stop hiring snobby hipsters and start hiring people with actual customer service skills. -

If I were in the market to supremely invest in an exquisitely stylish leather couch or doorknobs that read 'enter' and 'exit' or 3-wick jar candles that make you have a private moment...
I would come here. [fin] -
Review from Ellen C.
I really do like Anthropologie, in that it's that cute boho-chic style with elements of flirty wearable, form-fitting femininity, but sometimes the delicate girly overtones overwhelm me a bit. I'm still mostly a tomboy at heart so Anthropologie is a nice change of pace when occasion requires a little more adorable kind of elegance (wow, so I am not so great at describing fashion-related things).
Anyway, Anthropologie and Free People are all under the Urban Outfitters brand so I'm sure the similarities are quite striking - the price point and clothing material/construction differ a bit here and there. Anthropologie and Free People seem on par with one another in terms of price point - the latter being more free-spirited and less proper? Does that even make sense? No? Good.
I find the sizes run pretty accurately, though you occasionally have to size up or down depending on the kind material or constructions, unless you have some kind of always perfect proportionate body, in which case - I hate you. Anthropologie carries their own specially manufactured brands as well as other moderately luxury/boutique lines. I'm not particularly well-versed in such things, please bear in mind.
For the men, well there's housewares and amusing coffee table books. And how about the housewares? Holy overpriced ridiculousness (I believe there was a recent http://salon.com addressing the ludicrousness of Anthropologie constructing a series of example studios in Los Angeles, decked out in Anthropologie wares - a set-up only the fairly well-off can afford to dream of). Most of the stuff is rather cute and I assume, supposed to emulate an indie DIY hand-made kind of feel? Kind of counterintuitive considering that price point, so yeah I'll stop harping on and on about that (it's highway robbery, omgzwhy?!).
The few articles of Anthropologie-origined clothing I have are quite resilient - I'll say that much. So although, yes, it's all produced in the same ole periphery countries, the stuff is of a far superior quality than say, Forever 21 crap. Quality over quantity for the most part. The reluctant feminine non-tomboy part of me heartily approves of this place (minus the housewares stuff, because again - what the heck is that about?!). -
Review from Carla S.
Several Yelpers recommended I go here the other day as I was in need of a dress. I had never been to an Anthropologie before (even though we do have one in Orlando) so I didn't know what to expect.
Well I really liked it a lot.
The clothes are really cute (i'm dubious about the quality of fabric of some items i saw, but you could say that of just about any place).
So after wandering about, and crashing into things (i'm clumsy). I found what I thought would be the perfect dress. I go back to try it on and I meet "Shannon" (remember her name).
{A little background info, I've lost approx 20-25 pounds that I gained due to divorce stress. I have another 20-25 pounds that I gained prior to that due to marital stress. So I know I have a ways to go, but I am about to learn just how far}
So Shannon takes me back to a fitting room and asks my name as she writes it on the door (i like that). She does the "if you need anything..." speech that's standard.
Then it happens. Reality joins me in the fitting room and gives me a royal BEAT DOWN. My God. I had no idea how big I still am. Granted, I picked a dress that any woman with boobs & hips would look bigger in because of the cut. Regardless, this was not the dress for me.
I call Shannon in to help because the dress had ties that could wrap around you a few times and I thought if they were tied differently that might help. (Denial also joined me in the fitting room). She came in and helped and was offering ideas as to what all could be done.
Finally I say, "I feel fat." and here is why I want you to remember Shannon's name. She says, "THEN DON'T DO IT!!!" What? I have never had a salesperson not try to talk me into something.
Well I departed without purchasing anything, but I will be back and I know who I will be looking for when I do.
(stay tuned for my review of Curves, which i joined the next day) -

I just wrote a wonderful review about the other Anthropologie store in Austin and the same rings true for this location. The only issue with this location is the parking can be a bit crowded and the parking lot can be hard to get in and out of do to its location right off of Lamar.
The staff are great, the items are fabulous, the sales room is small and cramped BUT worth the visit. -

"We gladly accept returns accompanied by an original receipt."
Or so it says on Anthropologie's receipts.
So I did not appreciate the stern lecture I received from the sales person when returning a top yesterday. I loved the color but I ended up not loving the asymmetrical hem, despite trying it with three different pants/shorts styles at home. I just couldn't make it work so I never wore it. I had, however, taken the tag off, thinking I'd eventually be able to wear it.
I had the original receipt and the tag but the sales person felt the need to berate me for taking the tag off before I was sure I was going to keep it. She said, "it's not that I don't believe you" and that she would "make an exception this time".

The clothing at Anthropologie is amazing-- there is really something for everyone, whether you like it or not! Your wallet might hate you afterwards, but your body will love you for clothing it so well. Their selection covers a spectrum; some pieces require a more imaginative eye to pull off, others stand out in obvious beauty. Even if you don't find the perfect dress, blouse, sweater or pant (or simply can't splurge that day), you can console yourself with a sugary-sweet bit from the housewares section. I just dare you to cry the day you've purchased a rick-rack and pom-pom edged dishtowel. With cherries on it. And maybe a nice little tea cup/saucer set. Some lovely bath items. A scarf. A retro-styled apron....!!!! Clearly, I could go on.
For me, Anthropologie is a place to treat myself to a little something nice (or a lotta somethings gorgeous) every once in a while. With its pretty lighting, high ceilings and chic decor, the store itself acts as a soothing retreat. If I were to rate the clothing and store aesthetic on its own, the store would get 4.5 stars.
Unfortunately (and this is the part where you and I cringe), much of the service leaves me wanting more. I don't think that some guests should receive preferential treatment simply because they are more demanding and high-maintenance. More often than not, I am ignored, just glossed over in favor of somebody else. It makes me feel like an unvalued guest.
Generally speaking, the younger members of the staff knew what from what and treated me with genuine politeness and care. It was the attitude from the old-school guard that hurt my feelings most. Yes, okay, I might not be able to wear the teeny-tiny chiffon blouses, but I might be able to pull off a dress or two and look kinda cute. If you'd just give me a fitting room, I'd be able to find out.
I know that the clientele you often receive isn't exactly the most pleasant group, but I don't think that the nice ones should go overlooked. Maybe if you treated them better, the nice patrons would visit more often. (I know I would if I just felt more welcome and comfortable.)
I've been to a few other locations and have been blown away by the kindness of their staff. I just wish that this location had service as nice as their product. -

Their cloths are beautiful ! Their large is actually a large. They can be pricey but do not let that stop you. They have a great sale room and if you really look in the store you can find items reasonably priced for a store like this. Also, all my dishes and glasses come from here.

For the record: this place sucks if you have any kind of T and A.
Seems like the stuff only looks good on girls who officially don't have an eating disorder, they were just "born skinny".
If you are a waif, in possession of Daddy's American Express black card or want to sing in an all girl indie band, this is the store for you.
If you've got juicy booty and sexy curves, and you're not afraid to flaunt it, DO NOT buy anything from here- it all fits really badly.
You can tell me BEBE is 'clothes for whores', but I'll take a fitted top or dress from that chain anyday over a frumpy, loose and baggy frock from this overpriced, overrated store that really was better as a Whole Foods joint.
Also, I never see the kinds of discounts most other chain retailers offer on a regular basis, so for all of us budget minded females, there are much more appealing and logical places to blow our free cash. -

Anthropologie has become my "Go-To" gift giving store. Yes, its a chain, blah, blah, blah . . . But their products are so nice; between their clothing and home accessories, you can pretty much never go wrong.
I have dresses, necklaces, tops, latte bowls and even bathroom cabinet knobs from this store. The style is classic without being trendy and appeals to a wide range of ages. Plus it smells SO good in here!
A few of their items can cost you an arm and a leg, but I have also found some steals from the discount rack, and many of their household items can cost as little as $5.
My family has learned they can buy me pretty much anything from this store and I will be pleased, and in return I can buy almost any woman any item from Anthropologie and I know they will like it! And the gifts come in such nice wrapping. That alone is worth buying gifts here! -

O Anthroplolgie... I heart you but your prices are too much for me to handle.
Though some items maybe worth what their tag may state, some pieces are just out of this world! Their clothing is fun, their home goods are inspirational, their knick knacks are screaming at you to buy them, and their customer service is pretty personal until you come smack dap in what seems like their permanent check out line, 3 customers deep. Goo. There are always 5+ employees on the floor but for some reason it doesn't seem as if their associates are crossed trained to work the fitting room and the cash wrap... that is such a huge faux pa to me. But I find myself returning to see what fun, new items they have for me to dream about buying. -

How to get the Anthropologie Bohemian Artisan look on a Bohemian Artisan salary:
1) Park
2) Walk to doors
3) Put on blindfold.
4) Open doors.
5) Demand to be led to the back sale room of the store. If I am there and have taken my own blinders off, I will gladly lead you.
6) Begin on the left side for the lowest prices.
7) Once you have found your items, slip them on over your clothing and look in the mirror. It is too tempting to pick something up on the way to the dressing room.
8) Make your final selections, put on blindfold, and fumble back to the counter with credit card in hand. Don't worry if you chip some china on your way out because it will just mean more stuff for the sale rack. -

Very sweet, very helpful sales girls. I was a terrible customer the other day and everyone was so nice about it.
I stopped in on my way home from yoga to peek at the new fall merchandise and check out the sales room. I had mall hours in mind and had been assuming that they were open until 9. I started finding tons (and I do mean tons, I don't shop that often so when I do I make an event out of it) of things and sending them back to the dressing room. I seriously had 75+ items to try on.
I finally get myself back to the dressing room about 7:40 (still thinking they are open until 9). Everyone was really friendly, no one rushed me. Lots of help and offers to find other sizes. About 8:30 I'm pretty close to done and wanting to make sure I'm out of there before they close for the evening. I ask the sales girl - "you guys close at 9 right?" She tells me, still being nice about it, that they actually close at 8. I was mortified and felt terrible and fell all over myself apologizing. She very sincerely assured me that it was not a problem as the staff had lots of things to do to around the store before they could leave.
I am seriously amazed at how professional and nice the entire staff was to me that evening. They would have been well within their rights to tell me when I entered the dressing room at 7:40 that they closed in 20 minutes, or to tell me at any point after 8 to get a move on. But they didn't. They continued to help me and do so in a gracious and sincerely friendly way. I was able to get a lot of great things for fall and now I am set and don't have to worry about fall clothes. Thanks to the whole staff!!
The review lost one star b/c some of the things are just so darn expensive. -

I've been to other Anthropolgies before and always found the customer service hit or miss. I guess they have nationwide training in how to be rude because it continues here in Austin. I'll stick to the online version.
I go in early when there are very few customers, and of course, I'm invisible, especially with the pile of clothes over my arm. Yet an other woman with one item, is offered the royal treatment. I had to actually ask for a room after the two pranced off around me. When I finally caught the salesgirls eye, she actually asked: "Did you want to try those on??" Duh! No, I want to walk around with them for fun.
Gorgeous store, great things, and now I can try the stuff on before I come home and actually buy them. These girls aren't getting my commission. -
Review from Deji M.
I don't want to make this post. However, I've got a fashionista wielding a weapon alarmingly close to my head making some threats. Apparently, I conveniently "forget" where I purchase some clothing articles when asked, resulting in this pretty desperate - sorry, I meant... dramatic effort to obtain information. I don't type so well with the heel of a stiletto pointed at me. Forgive typos.
I bought a funky, striped, royal blue silk skirt here for $65 off the clearance rack, and, remarkably, it fit ok.
OWWW OKAY! It was $40 off the clearance rack. And it fit perfectly. Geez.
I bought another skirt the likes of which I've never seen before for $80... I'm sorry. Okay, okay. I meant... also for $40. From the clearance rack. Please don't pull so hard on the hair.
There are a lot of places to shop in Austin. For some reason, I enjoy quality at an affordable price. And now the world knows about the back room at Anthropologie. Not a good thing.
-1 star for the crazy prices on some items, and the fact that I'm now missing a clump of hair.Listed in: Buy Buy Buy

I love the craftmanship of the clothing, housewares and pretty much everything in the store. Everything is unique and colorful. The space is truly amazing with high ceilings and very light and airy.
Unfortunately that is where the beauty ends. Am I just crazy or did someone cut off all air supply in the sale room? They keep it like 90 degrees in there. Are they trying to get all of us frugal shoppers out?
No seriously, I have found some major deals here; however the actual quality of the items, not so hot. I got my earrings for my wedding there wore them on my wedding and went to wear them again and they broke. A pearl actually fell out. I have purchased all of my bed linens from Anthropologie and they are flimsy and fall apart after several washes. But they are very pretty to look at.
Lastly, the staff can be uber snobby. Last time I was there I picked up a large decopaged container and some items fell that were beside it. Nothing broke. A salesperson came over and I apologized and said, "Don't worry, nothing is broken" and her response was "good". Good thing I am not going there to meet friends.Listed in: Born to Shop

If I were a trust fund baby-- this is where I would stock my wardrobe, buy my dishes, furnish my apartment, and get all of my jewelry. but alas, I'm not. SO...I scrape by sorting through the countless items banished to the clearance section with the occasional splurge on the 'good stuff'.
I meandered through anthro today with no real plan--horrible life decision. That means I had no goal. Nothing specific to look for. AND no time limit. Enter me: doe eyed, dreamy and drawn to the newly stocked sale racks. But everything in the full price section was so pretty....CRAP. Next thing I know they have started me a fitting room. I have 4 dresses, 3 shirts, 2 sweaters, a belt, a scarf and a necklace.
I have that excited but terrified feeling as I try things on...it all fits. I want it all. I can't afford it all. But I want it. It's so "me"--that shirt would go with my new jeans. and this dress with the necklace and belt. what a cute outfit. OH the slippery slope. I narrow things down.
I'm having buyer's remorse BEFORE I check out. seriously--the devil and angel on each shoulder. It's so expensive. BUT ALMOST EVERYTHING IS ON SALE. You never spend this much money. BUT YOU GET PAID THIS FRIDAY. Yes, the naughty shopaholic was louder. I threw up a little in my mouth when I swiped my credit card.
At the end of the shopping trip--I got 2 dresses, 2 sweaters, a belt, a scarf and a necklace. My total bill? $280. More than I planned-YES! worth it? I think so...everything I got is beautiful. I got one staple wardrobe piece that is perfect for the season (eggplant purple sweater)--everything else was clearance. The staff was very helpful, but not pushy. They let me wander for a good hour wthout making me feel like I didn't belong.
I'm feeling pretty confident with my purchases...tags are off almost everything.
Beautiful store---stays with trends, classic lines for the most part--the twist is the fabric or the combinations. Another dreamy Sunday, I'm sure to come by again.
***then I got home and ordered another dress online that they didn't have my size in the store. *gulp. addiction is brutal. -

As much as I love what Anthropologie sells, I can't tell what percentage of my clothes are still together vs the ones that are just fine that I've bought there. It seems it could be 50 - 75% are irreperably broken. I took one item in to get fixed as it severely became disjointed, and even after professional help, it still came entirely undone. I'm going to have to say the fabric is not so good for the design.
But yet, I can't help it, I do love it so and wear the damn thing hole and all. I know this says something about me, but, whatever. I don't buy nearly as much as I would otherwise, so that's one for me. But I continue to go back, so that's one for them.
I might be annoyed by the staff but I can't even get there because of the quality issue. And the quality issue is why I give it such a low grade. Design, great. Not always, but on average. Website, great. -

What a pretty store. The displays of clothes and housewares are pure eye candy. The girl stationed by the entrance was so sweet. My daughter wanted to only sit and read her book... no problem... she was made comfortable in a plush chair by the entrance while I wandered around in peace.
I found a few beautiful pieces of clothing I really liked, but one look at the retail price tags made me blink hard several times. Obviously, this is not a store that will get a lot of my regular business. Perhaps I might find something at a more reasonable price come sale time. Meanwhile, I plan to return as this is a great place to browse and while the time away. -

Thank god Austin finally got an Anthropologie! A perfect addition to the 6th and Lamar area, this store is beautiful and fun to get lost in for an hour or so. The clothes are unique and fun, with a price range from "not bad!" to "good lord!" The furniture and housewares are lots of fun. The store layout is unique and perfect for thoughtful browsing.
Even though its a chain, it still manages to feel special and unique. Check it out!Listed in: Born to Shop

I have been in uber exclusive (lame) stores on Rodeo drive with less snobby staff. Although the brand overall is solid I think they need to reconsider their sales approach. If you need to shop here spare yourself and shop http://anthropologie.com.

Anthropology is the same company as Urban Outfitters.
The fact that this location was built from the old Whole Foods space, next door to the new REI, makes it high-ceilinged and good for browsing, but that's about it. As with Urban Outfitters, the items are a little too precious, a little too theoretical, and certainly overpriced.
The houseware items are REALLY stereotypically girly. The whole store, really, caters to some kind of hipster-housewife-Victorian fantasy.
Beware of broken and chipped items, especially on items like drawer pulls and dishes. Go next door and buy yourself a Leatherman. Or something new from BookPeople. You'll get more use out of it than anything from this place. -
Review from Tara H.
Is it expensive and possibly overpriced? Sure. Does it have a style that may only attract a certain type of person? Sure. Is it the dreaded chain store? Sure. Do I freakin' love it? Heck yeah!
I love Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters for the same reason. Home accessories and personal accessories you can't find in other stores. They have their own "look" and, honey, they work it. Plus, this is definitely one of my favorite spots to pick up gifts for my friends.
One other thing I love is the window dressing. Besides By George, Anthropologie has the best window dressing in the city! -

I really do love Anthropologie. I don't necessarily love the prices, but when I feel like faux-shopping I go wandering through the store fooling myself into thinking I can get anything I want but just don't feel like it.
The sale section though... Oh the Sale Section! Now that's a place I like even more. Once in a while I'll get lucky and find a dress in my size AND my price range. There's a pretty good selection, for far more fair prices than the rest of the store... and they rotate pretty quickly, so it's fun to check often. It's a great area for gifts, either for yourself or for others. -

Antrhroplogie is one of my favorite store, but I am willing to admit some of their major flaws: prices can be high and half of the clothes are designed for prepubescent girls lacking hips and breasts.
But... the clothes and housewares are beautiful and unique and I have found the staff to be really helpful.
On a recent trip to the location in Southlake with my mom searching for a few more clearance cabinet knobs ($3) to finish my project, they called the Austin_Lamar location (my favorite) to see if they had any in stock. They shipped them to my house at no charge. -

Well, I tried to go in here, but on my first attempt I was blown backward an impenetrable gust of intensely strong scented candle and room spray smells. They would have been pleasant enough at 1/2 or maybe 1/3 the strength.
Eventually I made it through the door. I'd have to agree with the other reviewer who said "frumpy." Not what I expected from UO's upscale cousin, at all.

Wow I love the clothes/ home accessories this place offers... My biggest problem is the $$$. If I were a rich woman, I'd make a wardrobe for myself from this place and add in some gucci and prada too... However being a young, not so rich woman, I can't even buy 1 thing from this place without feeling intense guilt. $50 is about as cheap as a top goes for at this store... An the really cute stuff can cost more like $180. Grrrr...
They also have really cute bedding and kitchen decor, however, it's a very unique style, so my guess is you either love or dislike this place. I'm giving it 4 stars because I do love it, I just can't afford it. So far every experience I have had at this store has been nice, though, as far as help and the sales people.Listed in: Fashionista!

I am conflicted.
It's not exactly over the price....or the iffy quality of some of these duds...or the (I heard this through the grape vine, I'm not going for slander here) crazy story in the Philadelphia Weekly concerning how the hyper-conservative founder of Urban Outfitters (Richard Hayne) has totally reneged on the original principals of Free People when it was in it's REAL thrift-store phase (and he was still married to his liberal wife, later the founder of the White Dog Café) and started donating quite a bit of money to Sen. Rick Santorum...or the delightfully shocking, total Brit. Empire-worthy representations of the Other in the catalogs I receive and, beyond that bit, enjoy fairly often...
It's kind of a mix of all of that. Together. But more than all of that, I think it's the way that I look in the catalogs and online at these beautiful (and beautifully photographed dresses) and then walk down three blocks to the store and feel the material and study the seams and feel ill over the wasted opportunity for some very cute and a few ravishingly beautiful items. I feel the same way about the quality (though certainly NOT the beauty) of UO and FP's clothes.
On the local level, as in this Anthropologie here in Austin, I'd say it's awesome. It's fun to get lost in. The service has been generally good, or at least live-and-let-live. I would gladly purchase any item in stock that I felt like purchasing from Anthropologie from this Anthropologie... so three stars for the store and more like 1.5 stars for the company/clothes. -

A little too much little old granny stuff for my taste, overall pretty frumpy.
I'm usually a 12 (yes boo hoo :c) but here I was a 10! Now on that same note, their shirts are itty bitty and long enough for toddlers, but only barely. I know I'm tall but if a shirt doesn't even go past my rib cage it may be a liiiiittle too short in design.
Lots of neutral earthy colours. The skirts are a great length, I didn't see a single one above knee, which is what I love to find. Nobody wants to see where ass meets thigh.
The prices are really the main deal here though, for a chain it is very expensive. I got two mid-length skirts and one sleeveless midlength dress. They were all one layer and no more then two different types of fabric per piece.
The total? 363.86
So I have to say it /is/ extremely overpriced. Total I would expect to pay 120 tops for the same items at another store.
I'd say you pay for the brand but, really, anthropologie is no BAPE. -

When I'm in school, I usually tend to gravitate towards one store to buy the bulk of my clothes from, for sake of time and energy.
Anthro is that store for me when I'm at Texas. I think I could go on and on about how great Anthro is -
- Their buyers are superb. I think I would still come here if I was dead beat broke just to look at how they've curated the store. They source their items from all over. Over Christmas they had stuffed animals that were made from women in Africa. Their serious jewelry is something to examine. And they carry labels like Spendid, Bailey 44, Bordeaux, Tracy Reese, Saivana, JBrand, AG, and etc.
-The store is gorgeous. I feel like the decorations change constantly. I think all Anthros have a staff that builds their decorations. It's especially fascinating when their decorations are made from recycled materials.
-Generous customer service policies. Unlike Banana Republic and JCrew, Anthro hasn't cut down on the time they allow you to return their clothes. It's like they have an unwaivering guarantee on their products.
-If they don't have it in store, they'll see if another store has it and ship it to you for free.
-This Anthro in particular has one of the largest sale selections I've ever seen in an Anthro - and I've been to a lot of Anthro's in my life.
Reasons why I'm only giving 4 stars as opposed to 5.
-The girls here are catty.
-Anthro has great sales, but it's extremely agitating when the dress you bought 3 weeks ago is all of a sudden 50% less than what you paid for it. (Anthro grants price adjustments within 14 days of the original purchase date.) -

I'm going with four stars, and you know why? Knobs. There are about a thousand jokes I could make based on that eventuality, but it's true. I've been in here from time to time since they opened, and I even understand a majority of the criticism (within reason) that some levy. But for me, there will always be knobs. And the sheer joy of discovering those and other accoutrements that can help add a little something to your living space.
The critical among us tend to point to the pricing structure here, and I can't say that I don't get that (some items are frankly spendy), but for the style and selection of what they have going here, the fact that I can always make the dessert lover smile with a well-thought out surprise, and the fact that we've almost always encountered super helpful but rarely intrusive staff make this place work just fine for me. And the coup de gras? Knobs.
This weekend we really changed the nuance of one of our rooms at home by switching out the knobs. The pessimist would say that means that it's easy to spend lots of money fixing up his home, and he'd be right. But I was jazzed enough to find our new additions that if I had to do it all over again, I'd do it all over again. And that works plenty great for me. I only ask that you take a quick peek at what you're turning when you exit, thanks. Those knobs have a legacy.Listed in: Shopping in Austin

So my significant other and I went to Anthropologie yesterday to find a gift for a friend of ours. Harmless right? Well, after browsing through the store and falling in and out of love with things to get, we decided on (prudently I might add) to just get her a giftcard. Sometimes its better to get a card and actually pick out what you want than hassle through returning something.
So we walk up to the counter and ask the salesperson behind the register for a giftcard. He informs us that they have just run out and are in the process of switching over giftcard companies. Okay..... I can understand a small little white lie when you run out of something, but don't think I'm an idiot and tell me two lies to cover up for your incompetence. So he goes on the explain what we can do is order a giftcard from their corporate office and they will mail the giftcard in 5 to 7 business days. They will provide us with a business card explaining this matter to our gift recipient. Okay.... I guess that'll work, not too glamorous, but at least she'll recieve a gift in the mail (everyone always loves that). So, said clerk proceeds to hand us a phone and gives us the number to call their corporate office. This is where the problem starts. First, he doesn't even dial the number for us before he gives us the phone and stands there telling us the number out loud while other customers checking out around us are staring wondering what is going on. When finally someone from corporate gets online, we provide them our credit card number and all of the pertinent information that they need. Then they ask us for the recipient's address so they can ship the card to them. Well shit, we don't know her address of the top of our head. So we spend another 5 minutes trying in vain to find it, and end up calling the girls husband incognito and finding it out. All of this while we're still on the phone to corporate headquarters of Anthropologie. Now, at this point, corporate proceeds to put us on hold for 15 (we counted!) minutes to process this transaction! 15 whole mintues! How long does it take to run a credit card?! And, to add to our frustration, all of the clerks were conveniently absent from behind the counter so we were left alone, hanging onto a phone! We contemplated leaving several times, but since we had already given them our information, we wanted to finish the transaction and make sure they didn't go buck wild with our credit card number. Finally, after the transaction was processed, the person on the phone tells us that not only did we just waste 15 minutes of our day on hold, we would have to pay shipping for the giftcard! ARE YOU "EFFING" KIDDING ME!?!?!?! So due to the employees' incompetence at this particular store we would have to pay more!? There was no offer to wave the shipping charge or to send it to the store where we could have come to pick it up?!
Nothing.
At this point, we are rather irrate and ask the clerk behind the counter if we can just have our "business card" wrapped so at least our friend will have something to open. Pretty normal request right? Well, according to the clerk, they were out of string and wrapping paper! True story. He actually said "I'm sorry but we are out of string to wrap the gift with." My mouth dropped open and my fiance proceeded to explain to him how to "get crafty" (her term, not mine) and take some things from around the store to make the wrapping job somewhat presentable. We walked out of the store feeling thoroughly frustrated and dissapointed with the lack of customer service that we just experienced.
In conclusion: I will take a little blame in not having walked out sooner than we did. We do not need to be funding a business as poorly managed and run as this one. But, first off- the dude needed to call corporate for us and provide them with our information that he collected beforehand. There is no reason for a store such as Anthropologie, with prices like they charge, to be expecting the customer to do anything but hand them their credit card or cash to pay for anything. All of these problems could have been tempered had he taken that initiative. He should have never dissapeared after that to leave us to feel abandoned. Then, he could have done something to MAKE AN ATTEMPT to wrap our gift. It seems like this store takes pleasure in telling its guests "NO". Then they should have done something about the shipping charge. Then, then, then.... I could go on all day. Bottom line, I will not be returning to this store. I provided only one star because I couldn't give less. -

This place just strikes me as a place to get really unique, artsy things you can't find anywhere else. The prices are outrageous for some items ($800 for a vintage book??) but you have to appreciate the store window sets, artsy and spacious interior, and creative inventory. I've only bought one thing here ever which was on sale - a set of porcelain measuring spoons in the shapes of giraffes. How weird and cool is that?

Way to pricy for items mass manufactured in China. Pretty designs, but terrible quality.
Meh. You're better off shopping the sale section online. -

I've always found this store to be intriguing. The layout in some cities is spectacular, definitely a certain feel when you walk in. The Austin location is pretty cute, they did well with a previous Whole Foods location. The staff is pretty nice, and while I found them mostly aloof, I actually found that appealing. I cannot stand customer service peep's who loom over you and are 'up the butt' with their sales technique. The prices can be a bit of s shocker, but since everything is good quality and fits wonderfully for me, I find it mostly acceptable. (Still a shock for my husband though! :)) Will be back again for sure.
