Review from P. B.
Baton Rouge, LA
It just happened to be one of those days where all I wanted was a muffoletta.
After Monjunis closed, I found myself out of options for anything remotely resembling cold cuts, olive salad and wonderfully round bread. Not that Anthony's is close to me or anything, but I enjoy driving out of my way for good food.
As I arrived, it was packed. There's probably room enough for about 20 people to eat in the "dining room", a wonderful rustic hole in the wall bordered by a deli counter, crackled magazine praising the Italian hotspot, and jarred or boxed groceries from the old country.
I got a muffoletta to go, a worthy, formidable $12 purchase and sat down to wait for my to-go order with another patron who had, like me, heard the whispers of how great Anthony's is and decided to take the plunge.
This place is literally a mom and pop shop (and the son takes the orders.) Even the 3rd generation toddler was ambling around crunching on a biscotti. This is a family joint, and I like it like that.
There's plenty of other treats here as well, meatball subs, pasta, and plenty of other sandwiches to choose from, but the best has got to be the muff. This is the best olive salad I've had. Crunchy, tangy, perfectly proportioned. Fresh, thin mortadella, salami, capicolla, ham, and provolone. Someone once said it's better than Central Grocery. I'll go ahead and say it again, it is better.
Why? Because it's toasted and pressed until that provolone melts. And when it does, your fate it sealed.
It's been open for more than 30 years. Here's to another 30.
Grazie, Saia family. Well done -

The Italian Lover is a sandwich to be taken seriously. CLEARLY one of the absolute best hidden gems in Baton Rouge, and by people from the old country. LOVE IT...

When in doubt, go for the muffelata. (A full one can be shared by two people.) I nibble on my friend's and it was amazing. I had their spaghetti and sausage which was good. However, the muffelata is amazing.
It's not the best on the outside and it's a little cramped on the inside, but the food is worth it. Follow James M's directions to get there. -

You have to be on the service road. The turn into the strip mall is between American Pawn and Auto Zone. It's easy to miss.
I usually get the spaghetti and meatballs but they don't have it every day. The meatball poboy and half-muff is my backup. -

I would have never found this place if my co-worker didn't recommend it. It's located in a nondescript strip mall that faces the wrong side of the street, but the sandwiches are top notch! I have not had a better Italian sandwich, and I've been to Italy.
Transport this little deli to New Jersey, and I'd swear they were part of the mob. I saw a few people come in, pick up their "order", and not pay. Hmm...questionable? I think so. (Okay, so they might have paid, but I certainly did not see an exchange of money.) -

Do not let the location or the appearance inside to deter you from visiting this place and enjoying the food! The store is very tiny with five or so tables for eating which makes for a cramped situation. But honestly it gave me a home down feeling. Reminded me of the old cajun stores we used to visit as a child. The staff was fast and extremely friendly. The owner Tony was at a table relaxed and reading a newspaper. We had the Italian Lover and the Meatball po-boy. Both were pressed, hot and tasty. They have a large freezer with homemade lasagnas, tortellini, and other italian goodies ready to grab and go. You may need to ask someone at a table to grab it for you so you do not reach over their table. I see this as character! It allows you to interact with people, and that does not happen often now a days. As I told Tony...we will definitely be back for more.

This place is very small and quaint, but I like that. I meet Marco(the son), very accommodating. I could tell these people were truly Italian from hearing them speak to each other. The Poboy I had was great, the only thing about it, the price was a bit high. That said, I'll still be back, just not as often as I'd like. Next time I'll try their specialty the New Orleans style Muffoletta:)

You would never see it if you weren't looking for it. Run by an Italian and his son, this place is fantastic. Try any sandwich, it will probably be good. If you don't see the titular owner, his son has been there without exception every time I have been there. They have a great dynamic with the customers.
The special treat is during Lent when the matriarch does her seafood specials. -

Hidden at the end of a strip mall on Florida Blvd, is a terrific place to get a hot meal, delicious sandwhiches, or specialty Italian groceries. They have awesome lunch specials, very reasonably priced. There's a small "eat in" area, but you can't be offended when people lean over your table to reach the raviolis and italian ice in the freezer section.

Yum yum yum- and what an adventure finding it. Can't get enough of their muffalettas. Usually order to go but love waiting at the table to watch the other folks in the know order.
