Ridiculously good.
I got a creamsicle which may be my new obsession. Anthony's is dangerously close to where I take classes every week, I have a feeling I'm going to be coming here too much for my own good.
Thanks, Groupon, for introducing me to this delicious gem. -
Review from Keyla R.
This place has great Italian Ice. Perfect for any summer's day. I love the strawberry and the chocolate.
They also serve Bobtail ice cream. Bobtail is locally made in Chicago. Good Stuff. And, at Anthony's, they will prepare a container large enough for you to bring home. But, I would not buy more than you are going to eat in an evening or two. I don't like the way it keeps well long term. Besides, why would you want to? This place is right by the Southport Brown line stop. Super easy to buy fresh on your way home every day!
Service is quick and friendly. And they have tables to enjoy it at, if you must. But, I suggest you grab to go and window shop Southport while you enjoy your treat. -

I was freezing my butt off yet dared not to put down or throw away the frozen deliciousness inside a Styrofoam cup. O...M...G!!! I am a die hard lover of ice cream but after seeing the rave reviews about the italian ice, I made it a point to try.
The evening I went, it was cold and they had the door open. I'm assuming because it had been slightly warmer in the afternoon. Since I was driving, I decided to sit down and enjoy my frozen treat. Bad idea. I was cold inside and out. I sat in shivering bliss as I slowly devoured the pink grapefruit Italian ice I had ordered. Partially in fear that if I ate too quickly during my shivering episode, I would tip over and break into a million tiny ice pieces. So slow sweet delicious torture, I did endure and it was worth every bite.
The lack of a fifth star is due to the cardboard "giant" pizza slice I ordered. I have had much bigger and tastier slices of pizza. Don't waste your $5 dollars. -

The Italian ice at Anthony's is great. Every flavor is delicious. Check this place out if you're in the area.

I have been doing business with Anthony's for about 1 & 1/2 years now. We buy the Italian ice buy the bucket all year round and it's always fresh. My customers love the fact that it's fat free & dairy free they just can't get enough of the stuff.
Every year we serve our sandwiches and Anthony's Italian Ice at the Sheffield Garden Walk Festival and we get the same response.
So, if you haven't had any yet...
Thanks Mike for the great products and service. -

This place isn't your typical Italian ice joint, as they have so much more. They have a large variety of Italian ice and ice cream, as well as pizza, hot dogs, and sandwiches. I'm a fan of Bobtail ice cream, but I came here for some Italian ice.
A small order of Italian ice is plenty, as it'll get you two large scoops of any flavor you want. I've tried the strawberry and watermelon - both taste like the real fruit, but the watermelon is lacking a bit. I'm just used to it being juicier, with chunks of real watermelon, but I still liked it. -

Overall, the product is excellent. Not my favorite desert place but a good option. Bobtail Ice Cream = excellent and the Italian ice is very good. At the end of the day, the place is just a-ok for 2 reasons.
1) Price. Don't get me wrong, the quality is good but the the price is a touch high. It is hard to get out of here for less than $5 or $6 per person. Seems steep for portions and for ice cream/italian ice.
2) Ice cream scooping. There is a way to scoop ice cream. Some folks at Anthony's get this righ but several times they haven't quite gotten there. You have to get down in there and work it to get a nice big scoop(s). Then you have to pack the ice cream well, so that you don't have an "air cone" ie no ice cream at the bottom. At Anthony's, sometimes you get good scoops, sometimes bad. Anthony needs to work out the kinks and make sure everybody knows how to scoop and pack. Especially if he is going to charge premium prices.
As an aside. the froyo is not so good, so avoid it.
At the end of the day, quality is there but it is too expensive to be anything more than A-OK. -

You can't find a better lemon lime Italian ice. And be sure to try the cherry one too. Made with cherries from Traverse City, MI!
When the weather gets chilly they offer several different homemade soups. The split pea is amazing!
The owner Michael is super friendly and the staff is always sweet. -

Don't touch anything. You might stick to it. Every table here had stuff spilled on it or was sticky, icky, and really schmutzy. It made it impossible to enjoy the slice of pizza or ice cream.
The poor teen who was left here fending for herself didn't have a chance. The place seemed busy enough maybe the owner could afford to pay one of the many people willing to take almost any kind of work a few bucks to stand around and clean up after the customers, so the little teen gal can serve them? No way can she reasonably do both based on the volume of business I saw here.
Just my .02 -

I have to admit I was a little confused when I saw Chocolate Italian Ice. I've had a million fruity flavors of Italian ice so wanted to give this a try. I was totally torn though when I saw they also carried Bobtail ice cream as that's the bomb diggy!
They fill one of those styrofoam coffee cups with italian ice for a small size so it's a great deal with a large portion. I love italian ice because it melts so slowly. Chocolate flavor was different than I imagined but I ended up liking it very much!
Service was meh, get in and get out or hang at the tables inside or outside. There is a lot of street parking in the area. -

I absolutely love this place. I go here at least once, if not twice a week. The strawberry lemonade Italian Ice and the Cubby Crunch ice cream cone is heavenly. You will not be dissapointed.

The creamy tomato soup is the best I've ever tased! I picked some up yesterday for dinner because I caught a cold, and I'm going back tonight for more...give it a shot...
The best place in the city for soup! -

I love the location! Hard to park but during the summer great area to walk around enjoying the yummy Italian ice. Perfect summer treat!
I enjoyed strawberry and strawberry lemonade! Yum!
Very smooth and not icey like other place. Although there are no chucks fruit in it either which would be nice.Listed in: ice cream!

Anthony's is my go-to for ice cream. I live in the area and I have plenty of choices, I could walk to Dairy Queen, I could even walk to Scooters but they just don't compare to Anthony's.
Unfortunately, I am a creature of habit and I've never had their Italian Ice which is why I can't give it all 5 stars. The ice cream is always amazing and easy to eat and you really can't beat the pricing. The employees are always incredibly friendly asking if you'd like to sample.
It feels like a little ice cream parlor in a small town - definitely not a big city. I wouldn't recommend sitting inside and eating, it's very limited seating but their outdoor space is perfect for people watching.
Anthony's never disappoints! -
Review from Julia B.
Sadly I did not come here for the Italian ice, but I wish I did! In the middle of the St. Patrick's Day Madness, my group needed some grub and I spotted the pizza slice sign. Guiding all the peeps in, I promptly began ordering some pizza-pepperroni, sausage, and cheese-all were cooked while we waited. The owner gave us free samples of their peanut butter frozen yogurt...MMMMM it was so good! And we only had to wait a few minutes for hot, fresh pizza. The pizza was great, just what we all needed (some more than others). Then I spotted the Bobtail Cubby Crunch and I knew I loved this place. Also, the guys working were super friendly, even though our group was a little loud.
I will definitely be back for some sweet treats when it gets warmer! -

What can I say?
GREAT italian ice!
(Fruit flavors taste like real fruit, chocolate is a personal fav!)
UNBELEAVABLE pricing!
(Large servings - kid's size is plenty for me - and very low price!)
Honestly, how many places are there where you can truly get high quality for a low price these days? Not many...but Anthony's is one of them :)Listed in: Best Eats

I am so glad I live near Anthony's! It is a summer-time staple and the water ice is on-par, if not better than what you'll find on the east coast - it's smooth and creamy and refreshing. They also serve Bobtail icecream, which is delicious. And you get a lot of product for the price! Big fan!

I didn't think anything could top the cherry ice; that is until I tried the blood orange last night.

Remember that one Seinfeld episode where the fat free frozen yogurt was so good that no one believed it was fat free? I imagine that yogurt would have tasted exactly like the fat free peanut butter frozen yogurt at Anthony's.
This place has the best Italian Ice and frozen yogurt that I've ever tasted and they give you a lot for your money. A $2.50 "child" size is (12 oz) sufficient to kill a sweet tooth. I usually opt for the $4 large (24 oz) and freeze what I don't finish on my walk home. I haven't tried freezing the Italian Ice, but the frozen yogurt holds up well to refreezing (after some moderate melting) and is surprisingly creamy 4-5 minutes out of the freezer.
Anthony's has an extremely friendly staff. On warmer evenings there is a never ending line, but the workers behind the counter always move at warp speed with the friendliest candor. There's a particularly high voiced teenage boy that always makes me laugh to myself when he calls me (and every other girl over 18) ma'am.
Other great things include the outdoor seating (basically just a few chairs outside - but it's a great people watching spot) and the fact that they are open until 11 for the random late evening fix. They do however change their hours seasonally, as I found out while sadly staring into their dark interior one late evening in March. -

Yummmiieeeeeee!!
I had a chocolate/peanut butter frozen frozen yogurt twist...think cold, smooth, peanut butter cup!!
My friend had a chocolate/coconut Italian Ice almost "Almond Joy-ish".
I had a sample of the Mango Italian Ice, oh my, I'm so coming back!!
All homemade and 100% natural.
Great selection of yummy flavors.
Little outside sitting area, water bowls and treats for the pups.
SECRET: There is no "Anthony" the owner's name is Michael.
Friendly guy.
Excellent service.Listed in: Fulfilling My Sweet Tooth!

I love Anthony's! The Italian Ice is spectacular. They have about 12 different flavors and I almost feel healthy eating it because it's homemade and loaded with big pieces of fruit. How bad can it be for me? It's fruit! (This is the same logic I use for pie.)
My favorite thing to get is a scoop of cherry (sweet) with a scoop of raspberry (tart). It's a great combo. Oh, and it's reasonably priced too--$2.50 for 2 scoops.Listed in: Sweet Tooth, Southport Cooridor, Great Lakes Ice Cream Tour

Frozen yogurt, Italian Ice, and real ice cream all in one spot.
I am so happy this little neighborhood ice cream shop exists.
I HIGHLY recommend trying the Merlot Chip ice cream. Yes, Merlot like the wine, chip as in dark chocolate chips. It was incredible!! -

You know... they say comfort food soothes the soul.
For me, shopping does the trick.
And if you are in this area, you are likely to be shopping or drinking soon.
Prior to alcohol, it's generally good idea to eat something. Like the grilled cheese sandwich here with a fruity, fresh, crisp Italian ice... try the raspberry.
The key to an exquisite, authentic Italian ice is for it to flaky for that texture to melt on contact with your mouth. This ice can be chunky. Tasty still, but crunchy. The flavor more than makes up for it-- Berries! Real berries! It's not the artificially colored flavored syrup that tastes like the cough medicine your Mom used to force feed you. Thank goodness!
I tell myself that the all-natural flavoring means lower calories, lower fat and it won't simply migrate then adhere to my thighs.
Service is great- always very friendly.
Bonus for the Doggie Water bowl outside! -

Overall, I liked their italian ice...I tried a passion fruit and raspberry combo. It was very tasty & refreshing on this hot, Hot, HOT July night. I liked that it was flavorful and not overly sweet.
There was a steady flow of customers when we were there and helpful staff to serve up their treats very quickly.
Yum! I'd go back for sure.Listed in: Addicted to Sugar

It's exciting to find a place that has wonderful treats for my vegan self and non-vegan friends alike!
I'm generally not fond of cold things, but I love the flavoured Italian ice here. Last night I had a scoop each of mango and pink grapefruit. The ices here aren't too sweet or too tart like those you'd get at other places. They taste natural and refreshing instead of like fake cherry or whatnot, which makes all the difference in the world.
They're open pretty late too, so it's a great stop after early-evening activities. -

I used to always make a special trip to Anthony's when it was located on Bissel and Armitage. Since they moved to Southport they are now only 2 blocks away from me and I can't stay away! Their Italian ice is so good. I always get chocolate mixed with something else. In the winter they have soup from Joey's Brickhouse....another favorite place.
I have a friend who is addicted to the cherry flavor. She's pretty much there every day in the summer, sometimes twice in one day and she lives in Streeterville.............she has too much time on her hands, but I digress. I'm always at a loss on what to get her for her birthday or Christmas....what do you get someone who has everything and can buy anything she wants? This year I got her a gift certificate to Anthony's......genius!! I talked to Mike the owner and he seemed a little surprised by my request. He didn't have any gift certificates, so he just wrote it on a piece of paper and said he would go next door to Kinko's if I wanted something nicer. I did, so I went back the next day to pick up the new printed version. Thanks for the great service Mike, she and her husband loved it! -

I came her when I was looking for a more healthy alternative to the daily dairy queen soft serve cones i was inhaling this past summer and Anthony's did not disappoint me!
Their frozen yogurt flavors are great and taste yummy and taste even better when paired with italian ice. My reccomendation: Peanut butter frozen yogurt with chocolate italian ice YUM! -

I had the cantaloupe ice. It is truly the best thing I have tasted in recent memory. If you like Italian ice, it is a must. The staff were very efficient and friendly. I have to go back to the ice. I thanked the young lady who scooped it for me as though she invented Italian ice. Very, very delicious. Tiny delicious piece of melon in there. I sampled the coconut and peach as well, and was jealous of my friends who had them. Going to try every flavor.

for some reason, the haters of the world have turned against Grapefruit. Too tart, they say. Not as flavorful as Orange, they say. To those people, I say SHOVE OFF! Let me and my love of Grapefruit be in peace.
That was until I met Grapefruit Ices at Anthony. For once, I can use the words "sweet" and "grapefruit" in the same sentence.
p.s. sweet as in "awesome" or "whoah". not like that whore, Orange. -

Excellent Italian beef sandwich here, although the true stars are the soups. My sister in law works at the kids' bookstore across the street, so more often than not we end up with food from Anthony's due to her. That's not to say that we don't enjoy it.
The handful of times I've eaten "in" (rather than getting soup take-away) the folks inside have been about the nicest people one could imagine. -

Great soft serve. Great Italian Ice. Bobtails Ice Cream never upsets. Few tables outside to relax and eat at. Perfect way to end a summer day.
Non-frozen alternative: Sensational Bites - a bit north on Southport has great treats as well. -

Emily B and I were craving ice cream in a bad way one day.
So we headed across the street from Mystic Celt, over to Anthony's, because a) it was in our line of vision and b) we had the shakes so bad that we needed to take care of things, stat.
Anthony's serves some Bobtail flavors, and Emily and I both chowed down on some Cubbie Crunch - which has so many things in it, it's hard to distinguish what you're eating at any given time.
Overall, a cheap, clean, friendly ice cream place. -

I just might be the only person that went into Anthony's without leaving with a portion of their Italian ice. If their Italian ice is anything like their potato bacon cheddar soup or bagel hot dog, I'm going to have to get me some. The cold weather won't hold me back from having a frozen treat.
I spent $13 (on 2 hot dogs and a large soup) and 15 minutes here chatting it up with the very nice gentleman at the counter who seemed more than happy to inform me about their specialties. I fell in love at first taste with the potato bacon cheddar soup, and immediately made a commitment to the large.
I can't wait to come back to try out more of the soups, Italian ice, and leave a bigger tip. :) -

I absolutely love Anthony's Italian Ice. They have a great selection of flavors and the staff is always friendly. If I am looking for a cool, refreshing treat, I know exactly where to go!
They also have homemade soups & sandwiches, so they are a great place to grab a quick lunch on a weekend. I haven't tried any of their soups, but they always smell great!
In the summer, they always have a bench outside where you can sit & enjoy your treat and people watch (my favorite!). They also are very dog-friendly with treats for your pooch & a water bowl in the summer.Listed in: Southport

This review is basically for Bobtail ice cream which they sell at Anthony's.
The must have flavor: Peanut butter chocolate chip
Creamy, peanut buttery ice cream with chucks of delicious chocolate.
I've actually never had anything else there... but the ice cream is great as is the small outdoor seating. -
