OK, Ann. You win. I gave you a second chance, and a third, and when my mum and sister visited we gave you a fourth. That turned into a fifth, sixth, seventh...you've reeled me in. The bang for your buck is considerable, as the egg entrees come with two sides, including those glorious cinnamon rolls. Drool. And again, BYOB is a home run.
The stand-outs in my return visits were the breakfast wrap (egg, cheddar, bacon and avocado if you please) and the ridiculous bacon cheddar potato pancakes. Unreal! I always leave with leftovers (can't eat more than a few bites of the rolls in one sitting), so the value is even greater. You're not Tweet, but gosh darn it, my family likes you, and we can walk to you from my place. You're alright, kid.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Overall, this is a very good breakfast spot. Their cinnamon rolls are one of the highlights and if you're dining with a friend one order will be enough for both of you even though you each get two sides with every egg entree.
The service is hit or miss but my experience has usually been that even on the weekend there is little to no wait. Reasonable pricing and always on my list of places to go for breakfast and coffee after a night out. -

Hmm - so this is no longer the place of the childhood memories. Yes, things have changed like locations and menu items.... I'm just not feeling it anymore.
The last 2 times I have been I was disappointed. The wait, was long... to long. The food I thought was just okay, not bad not great - just okay. I thought it was very pricey too - my husband and I can't remember the last time our breakfast bill was that expensive.
I guess the thing that bothered me the most was that I felt the place was a little dirty. The floors were awful. My jacket was on the back of my chair and the bottom of the jacket was on the floor and I didn't notice - I got up to leave and it was like a ring of filth on the bottom .... which prompted me to look under the table... food and grossness was all under the table... eck! The service station where the coffee and water is - really nasty. This place needs a good bath. I won't be coming back on my own. Our out of town friends usually want to come here - but I think I am going to start persuading otherwise. I agree, with other yelpers too much HYPE. This is not the place it once was. -

Very hit or miss food. The very major saving grace for them, has always been their cinnamon rolls. I suppose I should try the pecan roll at least once, from reading these reviews? Two stars for the food, and one for both the cinnamon rolls and my youthful memories of this place.
Anyway, from someone who grew up within this neighborhood, I give you 4 letters of a place that's superior, and unless you're getting an order of cinnamon rolls to go, you won't regret going here instead(and it's also better than Pauline's): S-V-E-A. 'Nuff said.... -

Less than a 15 min wait on a Sunday brunch day. Enjoyed the food, service and quaint Ann Sather :) style. Yum-O! Can't get enough of their Cinnamon Buns!!! Mmmmm
Can't wait to go back soon :) -

I couldn't decide between 2.5 and 3 stars, so I rounded up because I'm probably just a bit annoyed today. I do like that Ann Sather is generally pretty quick when I go there. I've gone before work and been able to get in and out in about 20-25 minutes. The staff is always friendly when I'm there. And yes, the cinnamon rolls can be really good, especially when they're warm enough and have a good amount of frosting.
However, when I go for breakfast I tend to like to get an omelette... and here, I almost never get one. Why? They pre-mix their ingredients, so you can't make any changes to anything. Yes, I realize that there are many restaurants where you can't make changes... so the fact that they won't give me a Denver omelette with bacon instead of ham isn't a huge problem, even if most places will. What irks me is that to get the a bacon Denver, it costs me $1.50 more because I have to order a build your own omelette and add each ingredient for an additional cost. Also, I find it annoying that cheese is considered an additional ingredient (not getting two cheeses, just one) - so that even if I get a bacon and cheese build your own omelette, it costs me $9, while a Denver omelette is $8.50.
A small thing to get annoyed about, I understand. But it *does* annoy me, and is part of the reason I don't go here very often. I'm more likely to visit Cornerstone, or maybe M. Henry now.
I will say that one other thing they have in their favor is the fact that they're open every day, I think. Christmas, Thanksgiving, everything. Nice to have a go-to place for breakfast whenever you like. -

So this Ann Sather's has a tofu scramble, given this information, my bf was excited to drag his vegan girlfriend here (me of course!). Now I appreciate Ann Sather's trying, but the tofu scramble is pretty terrible and here's why. They literally took a brick of tofu, crumbled it, heated it up, and threw in a few veggies...no seasoning at all. So you can imagine, this tofu was pretty bland and came off as a lazy attempt to offer a healthy (vegan) option. In my opinion, Ann Sather's either needs to step the recipe up or just remove it from their menu. Now, for another perspective...while my carnivorous boyfriend liked the cinnamon rolls, he didn't care too much for his meal - it was a plate of meats and eggs - and said that he'd never return. So there you have it, both the vegan and the meat eater found Ann Sather's to be lackluster. Oh, and did I mention that the waitress was being aggressive with turning our table? As soon as our food came to our table she gave us the check, and after a few bites she came back to see if we were ready to pay. So we paid then she came back and took the receipt (with the tip amount) before we were even done eating...I don't like that. We won't be back.

Coworkers: You got go for cinnamon rolls! Me: ok...
Yes, the cinnamon rolls were good. So was the 2 eggs, bacon, and links I ordered. OJ was good and fresh. But nothing was 'great'. Overall, I enjoyed this location due to the great decor, and spacey room. The service today was a bit slow. I was not greeted or seated at the door, as well as 2-3 others that came after me. While everything was prompt after this, the bill came very late. The location was not packed at all.
Maybe I am just not a big cinnamon roll fan, but Ann Sather's was just ok. -

The restaurant is famous for their cinnamon rolls, and I know I should not be eating them. I ate here with my best bud Sage J. and his partner Andy last week.
I ordered the Tofu vegetarian scrambles and the sides of cinnamon rolls. (I had to try them since Andy raved about them) They were so massive and drizzled with sweet, sugar cream. So sinfully decadent, but I could only eat a few bites. It was delicious, but a bit much.
It was a good thing we worked out at the gym after eating. Those cinnamon rolls are probably 500 calories each! Next time I'm going to try healthier sides. -

After knowing this place existed since inception, my first visit here was in 2012. Oddly suprised by the "cinnemon buns" that are more than any three people should consume in one seating, I was curious why we even ordered breakfast. Biscuits and gravy had too much sage for my liking, so I'll not be back. Sorry Ann Sather. Too much hype.

Do not go here! The place was nearly empty, and STILL nobody acknowledged us after 10 minutes of sitting. The man beside us, arriving just after us, got served a cup of coffee, but nobody came to our table at all. We got up and left. As we did, someone said, "Thank you." Ha! (I ate there last year, and the food was just awful. Bland and mushy. I thought I'd give them a second chance after some time passed...bad choice.)

Smoked salmon eggs benedict for under $10. I had never had this mix of foods before and it was so savory and delicious. I loved it. I got the mixed fruit and hashbrowns as my two sides and was very happy with my choice. This was the best fresh fruit bowl I've had to date. It had fresh kiwi, strawberry, blueberries, pineapple, grapes. No nasty syrupy cherries. :)
I went here for breakfast for the first time today with my pops. There was a good mix of people from oldies, families, 20 and 30 somethings.
Beyond the wonderful food options and efficient service, The location on Clark is perfect for a Sunday of breakfast followed by shopping along all the small shops that line the streets. I'm a new fan of the dress shop across the street and all and it's a good opportunity to do some "one stop" shopping all no the same block while supporting local business instead of the dirty corporations ruining our economy. -

Any place that offers gooey cinnamon rolls as a side is A-OK in my book.
I love their breakfasts and some of their lunch options. I had a turkey Reuben that was sub-par though. I thought it would be turkey pastrami but it was actual turkey breast like from a left over Thanksgiving dinner. That would be fine normally but what i had was dry.
I'm going to stick to their normal breakfasts and the normal Reuben. -
Review from PJ H.
The food is not terrible but not great either. Lots and lots of sugar and sauces on everything so it can be difficult to taste the food. The free cinnamon buns are tasty but fill you up very quickly so be careful...:) If you go in here during peak hours then good luck with the service. It's not really the staffs fault, it's just super busy and you take what you get...

There must be something wrong with this branch of Ann Sather because my experience here was completely mediocre compared to my experience in the Lakeview Ann Sather.
I got the Mediterranean Omelet and the egg was tasteless and overcooked. The spinach was also not fresh at all.
The cinnamon rolls I got on the side were pretty good, but not mind-blowing.
Our waitress very very patient with our large group, however, and her service was excellent.
I just don't understand how my experience here could be so different from one of their few other chains in the city. -

Oh me, oh my. Overhyped much?
My girlfriend has been on somewhat of a mission to go to Ann Sather, and it's taken us a long time to get there [in part because we love m.henry so much]. But one weekday morning we finally got to try this place.
It was dead. Only old-timers were sitting and sipping coffee. So we were seated rather quickly. Looking at the menu, many things looked good [by description], but we ultimately ordered the crab cake benedict and Swedish breakfast sampler.
The benedict...was not good. The crab cake wasn't bad, but the hollandaise tasted mustardy, and looked like mustard, and yuck. The Swedish sampler had a Swedish pancake [think crepe but folded in half twice], a Swedish meatball [with gravy], potato sausage [ehhhhhhh], an egg [any style], and lingonberries [yum!]. Every entree comes with two sides, so we ordered hash browns [not like American hash browns], fruit cup, sweet muffin [which was microwaved waaaaaaaaaay too hot], and cinnamon rolls [looks super sweet but is perfect!]. Nothing [besides the cinnamon roll] was that good. Sorry!
The service was good. Our waitress was attentive and nice. But I mean something [overall] was missing. I'm not sure what. Doubt I'll be back. -

I was really hungry for breakfast, and since my wife and I like to try places we haven't gone to before, we decided to drop by. The place was pretty packed when we arrived. I ordered the Denver Omelet with hash browns and fresh fruit while my wife and the sampler with the cinnamon buns and hash browns. It was really filling but it did not stand out. Portions are not too bad. I think I got really full from the food quickly. I loved the buns, but my wife doesn't like sweets so it wasn't that good for her. This would be a four star except the coffee tasted kind of burnt, and I had ordered a "large orange juice, but i got a regular glass. I wonder what a small oj would have looked like.

I really wanted to like this place considering that it is a Chicago establishment and many of my friends really like this place.
But sadly the food was just not that good. The famous cinnamon rolls were sickly sweet for me and the rest of breakfast was a shrug. -

So... I guess Ann Sathers thinks they are a liiiittle bit better than they are - seeing as they gave themselves an additional $1.44 tip.
I took my dad to Ann Sathers for Father's Day brunch. Food was decent, but they were SLAMMED because, well, it was Father's Day brunch so we were cool with the slow service.
I am, however, NOT happy about the surprise on my credit card bill - which I'm sure they hoped I wouldn't notice. $1.44 isn't much but if they did that to the 1000 people I'm sure that came through for Father's Day... yeah, it adds up.
That extra $1.44 tip on top of the tip I already gave, cost them a repeat customer... Hope it was worth it. -

Two weeks ago, I took a friend here as a thank-you for driving me out to the sticks for an appointment. We were going to M Henry, but they are closed on Monday. All I can ask is, 'What happened?" I ordered the Swedish meatballs with pickled beets and and Swedish apples as a side.
I started with a small side salad. The salad was horrible. Half of the lettuce on the plate was water logged, brown and slimy. The tomato had obviously been sliced the day before and then stored in the frig overnight, because it was grey and mushy. There were a few slices of the beets on the plate. These were so infused with vinegar that it made every hair on my head curl.
When my meal came out, I took one bite of the beets and pushed them aside. They'd better serve me as some sort of caustic cleaning solution. On my plate were 4 huge meatballs, covered in brown gravy. There wasn't much of a bed of noodles and those that were on the plate were dry and gummy. The meatballs (I only ate 1) themselves, were pretty generic...not much flavor (beef or otherwise) and overcooked. The gravy was just OK. The Swedish apples were so sweet my back teeth hurt. Even the orange juice tasted sweetened. The best part of the meal was the cinnamon roll.
My friend had one of the omelettes. From across the table, it looked pretty unappetizing. She was enjoying it, so I didn't say anything. When the bill came, all I could think was, "I'm paying $30 for this?" With all the great brunch/lunch places to go to, there's no reason for me to come back here...not even for the cinnamon rolls. -

Wait. That was it?
Recurring theme in my reviews: I LOVE brunch. I have high standards for brunch. Errands brought us to Andersonville, and we ended up here for brunch. I was pretty excited about it, and it ended up being disappointing.
Green eggs and ham (newbie to the menu): Great idea in theory, but way way wayyyyy too much pesto and asiago. Combine the green overload w/ egg whites and it ended up a clumpy, greasy, green mess. I did like the side options of applesauce and cottage cheese.
Brunch buddy had a simple two eggs and toast. Se ordered them over-medium and they were barely over-easy.
I''ll admit that I had to refrain from cinnamon rolls, but they looked exquisite. I'd come back to pick some up, but I would likely not come back for anything else. -

I was an orphan on December 25, 2010. My family lives a bit too far to just make a day trip, so in Chicago I remained.
I texted another orphan from work. Beepbopboopboopbeep. (That would be the sound of texting, obviously.) And we met at Ann Sather....just the two of us. Don't feel bad for us though.......why?
Because I ordered this: French Toast Fantasy. Big, fluffy carb loaded bread, cooked a luxurious golden brown, and filled with yummy saturated fat (aka mascarpone). Sprinkled with crunchy granola and fresh blueberries and strawberries. Oh.my.god. Merry Christmas to me!!!!
The only thing that could possibly make this a real fantasy would be getting spoon, erm, fork fed this luscious french toast by an adorable nerd from work, while sitting on his lap. I'd happily pay extra for that.
Two ladies got copious amounts of coffee, food, and lovely service. Thank you, Ann Sather for making my Christmas morning delightful!Listed in: I'm a chick and I love brunch.

From all the great things I have heard about Ann Sather, I was actually disappointed when I finally got to eat there. Yes, their cinnamon rolls are great, but their breakfast is not.
I went here about 3 months ago and can't even remeber what I had. See...not very memoriable at all. Though I do remember that the potatoes were decent. This place has an upstairs which we were told to sit there and when we did we just ended up sitting ourselves since there was no waitstaff around. The tables and decor are old. The tablecloths are plastic and the silverware kind of dirty looking.
Waitstaff not real friendly and slow. We waited a long time to get our check when all we wanted to do was leave! I probably won't go back to eat there, but I will stop in when I crave a good cinnamon roll!Listed in: Brunch...the best meal of the…

Ann Sather has good food, great service and a nice ambiance. It will not blow your mind or revolutionize the way you think about breakfast, but it gets the job done. I eat here regularly when I have a casual business appointment or a catch up breakfast with a friend.
The food is well prepared and well seasoned, you get a lot of standards (Eggs Benedict, Omelets, Pancakes and French Toast) and a few nice Scandinavian dishes (meatballs, swedish pancakes, don't forget the lingonberry sauce).
My personal favorite is the Swedish Stuffed Pancake. Don't be alarmed by the description: its a swedish pancaked stuffed with broccoli, cheese, ham and topped with hollandaise sauce. It is actually a lovely balanced entree. The rich hollandaise sauce is tempered by the slightly sweet pancake and the filling of broccoli and ham really a few other textures and flavors that come out really well. Its not too heavy and not too rich, and from first bite, you will love it! It used to be an occasional special but now is on the menu, so take advantage!
Other dishes that are great are the salmon and dill omelet, the steak and eggs with garlic pesto sauce and the french toast Fantasy.
But another key reason to go to Ann Sather is the side dishes (as long as you don't mind carbs, sugar and general deliciousness). The Cinnamon Buns are huge, rich and filled with gooey goodness. The biscuit is solid, but make sure you ask for a side of gravy. The potatoes are meh but get the job done. The sides are great to share or take home for a snack.
All this to say is Ann Sather is a good place that you should try. Its not the best breakfast I've ever ate (such as Walker Bros.) and none of their entrees, save the Swedish Stuffed Pancake, would I consider in my top 10 breakfast items (such as French Toast Orgy at Toast). Nor is it the best example of Swedish breakfast (Tre Kroner in North Park).
BUT it is a lovely restaurant, with tasty food and friendly service. If you are in the area, you should definitely add it to your breakfast rolodex. -

Not much has changed in the past 14 years...but the recipe for the cinnamon rolls...sadly. I still can't bring myself to give 'em fewer than 4 stars, but the rolls are just not the same. Could be the sugar, maybe the flour, whatever. Still worth the trip, but not nearly as fantastic as I recall.

A-OK. Not a particularly memorable brunch experience, and while everything was decent I wouldn't return when there are so many other brunch places around the city to try! I had the traditional benedict with hash browns and their famous cinammon roll as my sides. My eggs were actually a bit cold (very sad), which sorda took away from the whole dish. And while the cinammon roll was good, it was just a cinammon roll. Eh.

I have't been here in a while, but it was nice to go back! Ann Sather has the BEST cinnamon rolls! Yum! They have great breakfast specials too! I ordered the Berry Cheesecake French Toast! Sooo good! I decided to try this place despite the fact that Rachael Ray (GROSS!) ate here. I even ordered the same dish she did, apparently-- the French Toast Fantasy. It's French Toast made out of cinnamon rolls, and if you like sweet (which I do), it's incredible.
Nothing's cheap, but I'd come back and just get a side of the cinnamon rolls (definitely stole the gf's). They were TO DIE FOR delicious, HUGE, and hot for something like $3. Yes. -

Breakfast should be comforting. It should leave you feeling content, happy and, if its really good, ready for a nap.
Ann Sather does it all. The restaurant is full of life. I ordered Eggs Benedict with biscuits and country gravy and it was delicious. Oh, and if that wasn't enough I had a cinnamon roll as a "pre-breakfast appetizer."
Go for breakfast. Eat a breakfast the way breakfast should be. Take a box of cinnamon rolls home and enjoy the rest of your day.
Bottom line: You can't go wrong. -
Review from Katie M.
So I dream about these cinnamon rolls. From a thousand miles away. Nothing I've found in Boston can begin to come close. Everytime I'm in Chicago, I make a pilgrimage to The Best Damn Cinnamon Rolls in These Here United States, and I am never disappointed.
I am, however, always stuffed to the point of absurdity. Like, sometimes I don't know if I'm going to make it out alive I'm so full. I don't really understand how they charge only $10 or so for an omelet and two sides -- yeah, a pair cinnamon rolls are only ONE side, what?!! -- but they do.
The rolls are the best but the omelets bring it, too, and there's tons of choices. I'm sure you can go wrong with a dish or two (the menu's overwhelming, it'd be hard to nail absolutely everything) but everything I've had has been flavorful & plentiful. -

UGHHHH!!! How can anyone go wrong with an Egg white omelet!?!? Miss.Ann Sather did,and that makes me sad :( *weeps*
This place has an oldie look to it,i think they had a 50's cafe vibe ,with light blue walls and pretty looking ladies and men painted all over it,and they had a Diner like seating and i must say the servers here creep me out. Why?The women are all at least 5'8 and they have a boy cut hairstyle and completely oiled and they refuse to smile and they behave like robots who serve coffee every 3 seconds.yes!!i had 4 cups of coffee in 30 minutes!!aghhh..
My friends ordered the Mexican omelet,Crab cake+eggs,Poached eggs with sausage and i got the ugly egg white omelet with peppers and spinach. And they got a side of the famous Cinnamon rolls.I must say the Cinnamon rolls were massive, sugary and i think i lost my appetite by looking at it.But my brave friends ate it all up!woohooo..And then came our main dishes, and my omelet looked like a burnt pancake with a layer of cheese on it,which i could easily remove and it tasted like crap.
But my friends were happy with their dishes and had no complaints,i guess one has to try avoiding be healthy and order their general dishes and not try to make your own omelets?? Any how,i am sure this place can be given a second chance, when i decide to eat some high cholesterol food.*grumpy*

I rather liked Ann Sather. I liked my swedish pancake and I liked the little tablespoon of lingonberry on the side. I was so happy with the meal all together.
I especially liked my server who had a flair about him. His collar was flipped up and his hair was gel'ed perfectly. He had a cute boyish smile and then after he placed down four very large plates of cinnamon rolls at the next table, he came to my table to ask if I needed anything more. That other table were so surprised. So with a big faced smile I said to him, "They didn't expect so much huh?" and we both giggled.
The other reviewers pretty much captured how awesome the food is and how fun the decor is. I needed to share what a fun wait staff they had. Of course, I did read one review where the waitstaff had a huge awkward fight. Well, the more flagrant they are - the louder the fight, right?
Let me also add that there is an elderly aerobics class upstairs in the earlier part of the morning. How fun is that. -

My parents and I came here and I watched my mom eat a muffin bigger than her head and with more frosting on it than a whole cake. Ok I only exaggerated a little on the frosting part but this place is cookin!
My dad and I like big omlettes with lots of cheese selections and meats to fill. Its a big cafeteria looking place but with homestyle decor and cooking. Mom likes the big fluffy waffles with walnuts.
I used to get their coffee and buttery sweet biscuits before I caught my morning bus to work at the corner of Broadway and Roscoe St. -

Food? Great. Every time I've been to Ann Sather whatever I have ordered has been delicious. Of course, everyone talks about the cinnamon rolls. In my opinion, yes, they are tasty but way too sweet for me at any time of the day.
Now, onto the service. The last time I was here, our waitress seemed a little out of it. One slip up, ok but it became an annoyance. I won't list everything she screwed up or forgot, but here's a little tip for our waitress if she is reading this: if your customer puts their credit/debit card in the check presenter, YES, they do want you to use it.
Ok, so over all, a great place for breakfast/brunch. If you are a sweets person, get the cinnamon rolls. If you want grapefruit juice, hope you don't get the waitress we had cause you'll get apple. -

Ann, we need to talk. Please, come have a seat. Do you want something to drink? This is not great news, so, if you feel the need, alcohol may help dull the pain. No?- you want to stick it out with a diet coke? Well,OK, but- you know, it comes in the can, and no free refills.
OK- I have the best of intentions. My words may hurt, but, as you know, I typically do not sugar coat. It is time to stop parading around like a young thing. You have aged, my dear- and frankly- time is not being kind to you, not at all. You need to find a color palate that is not reminiscent of forever 21 in a pastel hue. Light pink and blue sponged walls? Please, they were done in the late 80s- 90s and are showing the age. Stop parading around like a middle aged woman trying to hold onto her youth. Embrace your age, and grow with it. It does not have to be painful for everyone.
Now,aside from your looks, which need improvement, we also need to deal with the food you are serving.
You see, you used to serve absolutely fantabulous food. The idea of coming here was exciting. Alas, this is no more. I brought my parents here this week. To say we were underwhelmed is a kindness. Let me be a bit more explicit.
My mother's ruben sandwich was HUGE- but she really did not care about the size- it is the TASTE that mattered. The meat was overcooked and stale. Yes, the melted cheese covering was good- but that does not make a ruben! My father's open face meatball sandwhich was also gigantic- but once again- it failed to WOW! You see- it was just luke warm. He was hungry, and never sends food back- so he ate it. My crab cakes benedict- the hollandiase sauce was zesty and great. The eggs were done well. HOWEVER, the crab cakes? Was that REAL CRAB?? I THINK not. In fact- I am pretty darn sure it was not. It had a very fishy taste, had a pinky red hue, had extremely large chunks-all reminiscent of imitation crab legs put into crab cakes.
Ann- really. We expect more of you. Your history demands it. Your cinnamon rolls help us remember how you used to be. Please, embrace your age and grow with it. If you are satisfied with sinking to a dated atmosphere that sells huge quantities of low quality food, well- OK. But- if that is the case, our friendship will have to end.
Why 3 stars? One for the cinnamon rolls, one for the service, and one for the history.
