Bay Area, CA
*It would be a 5 star if it weren't for the lack of cleanliness*
Today is Saturday.
This week, my man and I ate here TWICE already- it's that good!
When we ate here this first time, on wednesday, my bf said "Finally, a good Mexican food place in Livermore" - I think that explains it all.
It doesn't seem like a regular taqueria to me. I'm sure I have the definition of a taqueria incorrect but to me this is more of a sit-down restaurant- not the time of place you just come to get a burrito or taco and have it be good but kind of "meh."
Our first night he got the chicken mole & I got the chicken flautas. YUM. It was one of those dinners where like there's hardly any convo going on because the food is freakin good.
So then last night we came back after hiking and (I'm so boring) I got the same meal! The Flautas are where it's at for sure- sooo good. Not covered in oil, no shimmer of grease splattered all over the meal, seasoned perfectly with authentic rice, guac, beans, etc.
& this time my bf got the Carnitas (note: that's a weekend dish only, starting Friday night) which he also loved and ate the whole thing. He said he liked both dishes equally but the mole is heavier so take that into consideration.
We get seated right away and also our food delivered right away. The staff is great at refilling drinks, and they remembered us from earlier in the week and made chitchat.
The place is not the cleanest. Like, the silverware as an example, and it needs a remodel badly. I feel that if it had a remodel the business could be 3x busier than now (it's not slow, but moderately busy)
Even with saying that, this will be our go-to for Mexican from now on. After eating here there's no way we'd consider going back to Tequila's or De Los Caporales, and we never eat at Casa Orozco lol -

I've been here a few times. It's some decent food. They can be a little bit bland at times and also during lunch the service was lacking urgency. I would recommend the surf and turf burrito.
Had the tacos which weren't bad. Chips and salsa are just ok. I will probably come back but I'd rather just eat at tequilas taqueria. -

I have been to Anita's quite a few times in the past, but due to young children we didn't go out to eat for a couple year's. We happened upon Anita's again, took the kids and had a fantastic meal and experience.
The service was very good, they were super friendly, very good and patient with the children and constantly checked back with us to make sure we didn't need anything. The menu did say one basket of chips, but they gave us more (which personally would rather only have the one because I will keep eating them). I love their salsa as well, they have a "hot" and a "mild" and the mild is perfect for my kids.
My husband and I ordered a dish with a mole sauce and oh my goodness, it was delicious. It was the best mole sauce I have ever tasted and my husband said it was the best with the exception of this one restuarant in Mexico. The kids ordered from the kid menu and it was plenty of food.
It is too bad that there are a few bad reviews because I didn't see that at all. I have never had a bad meal or experience here. All in all, we will most definitely be heading back here more often, now that our kids are a little older. -

This place really does suck.
Back in the day you couldn't get a seat in this place for lunch, now you can pick your table and now i know why.
The food is bland and microwaved.
This day i got the Chile relleno soogy and just plain nasty, deep fried and covered with some sauce that had NO taste, the rice and bean had to been microwaved because the beans had that microwaved look to it.
That is why this place is dead poor food quality. -

We came because of the positive reviews, but in the end, I just can't write one. They are very clear on the menu, there is one basket of chips per table, doesn't matter if you have 10 people or 2, you get one basket. After that, pay for them. The salsa had a weird flavor, almost vinergary. The place is run down, although looks clean. I don't get why they don't print new menus instead of scribbling all the changes on them. The service was nice and it has easy parking.
My husband found his burrito to be excessively salty. I had tacos, a carnitas and al pastor. The al pastor was so greasy, the oil just dripped off, but it had nice flavor. The carnitas was really tough, chewy and dry. It was inedible without a lot of salsa, and since you only get one bowl per table, and it tasted weird to me, I didn't eat much of the carnitas taco.
Overall it just wasn't great food. I wont be heading back. -

Anita's is conveniently located in the same city I work in, therefore have visited this restaurant ample of times for lunch time that is.
We are always greeted with a smile and seated right away. I have tried a few dishes and never been disappointed. I think maybe once the rice was a little on the dry side.
I recommend ordering the Sopes. There thick corn tortillas with raised edges. The edges hold all the ingredients in. You can have them with carna asada, carnitas, chicken, whatever your little heart desires and then they are garnish with guacamole, salad cut like Cole slaw, a little bit of chili sauce and tons and tons of cheese...they are so good. If you are like me, you will only be able to eat one sope because the plate comes with beans and rice.
The camarones al mojo de ajo (shrimp in garlic sauce) are also delicious, the shrimp is not overwhelmed with garlic and enough sauce to dip your flour tortilla in...ahhh yummy.
I had to give this restaurant a five star because today for the first time I had to use their bathroom and guess what? Bathroom was super clean and smelled clean too. What a relief literally.
I love this place so much, I have planned many luncheons here and the end result has always been a success. -

Decent flavor food.. probably the best item is their refried beans.. but boy are they cheap.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On the menu, they tell you they are going to charge for an additional basket of chips and salsa after your complementary 1 per table. ordering additional tortillas (after the alloted 2 or 3 per fajita order) will be on your bill as well. I'm all about paying as much as anything would cost for great service and food but this place just turns me off for being so frugal. They give you a tiny spoon of beans and rice on the side too. Like its not the most abundant food in the world...?
After vowing to never go back, we did out of convenience last Friday and we sure regret it. The place was pretty full but not maxed out. We were seated in the back and immediately noticed a couple nats flying around. No big deal, we just shooed them off and continued conversation. It took a turn for the worst when my husbands salad came with a mini cup of olive oil and vinegar on the side. We were under attack and it was beyond disgusting. At least 50 nats swarmed the salad and vinegar.. we asked our waitress to move us but of course she was too busy taking a large table order.. finally we got some attention and we were moved 3 tables over. We asked her why there is so many nats everywhere and she replied with..'the garbage needs to be taken out or the bathroom needs to be cleaned'. ARE YOU SERIOUS LADY??? so clean it or take it out was my thoughts. She hardly apologized after moving us.
All in all the food is decent, but I will NEVER go back. Between the old dirty carpet, nats, dusty decor, and cheapness... I'm over it! -

I stumbled upon Anita's a few weeks ago while driving past Livermore and hankering for some good Mex eats... definitely one of my better stumbles.
I proceeded to be delighted by a burrito filled with some of the best Carnitas I've ever experienced. The chips were superb as well(thin, crisp and very fresh).
In addition to the fabulous food, the waitstaff was quite friendly and accommodating.
To top it all off, they were playing one of my favorite Latin Jazz albums by Pancho Sanchez!
This is, by far, the best Mexican food I've found in the East Bay andI'd gladly make the schlep from Oakland for some of more of their South-of-the-border goodness. -
Review from Andrea R.
I can't believe I've never taken the time to review Anita's! I'm also bummed I can't give more than 5 stars. THAT'S how much we love Anita's!
The food and service are awesome. Javier ALWAYS knows exactly what I want (and it's not just because I *always* order the chile relleno - my cheesy master). He's so warm and friendly. Claudia, too, is equally attentive and friendly, as is William who is always so cheerful and engaging. When we settle our bill at the front, Jesse usually strikes up a conversation with our daughter in Spanish :) so she can practice what she's learning in school. :) It feels like you're just going to a family friend's house for dinner.
I haven't even gotten to the food yet! My chile rellenos are always delicious. The sauce on top is fantastic. I'm not generally a fan of refried beans and rice at most Mexican restaurants, but at Anita's I clean my plate. Our daughter loves carnitas (which are only served on Friday, Saturday & Sunday). They make a special "kids portion" for her even though it's not on the menu. The chips and salsa are always so good and fresh. I could make a meal out of just those and will continue eating them until I pop or they run out, whichever comes first.
This is hands-down the best Mexican restaurant in Livermore.Listed in: Good Eats in Livermore,…

Have you peeked in their kitchen? Disgusting!
The food is barely good. Don't order the steak fajitas is horrible. Burritos are better than the rest of the items on the menu, but full of beans. Service is better than the food. Prices have gone up through the years, but not the quality.
Won't be back! -

I ate here with my hubby and 2 of his relatives last Friday. Hubby and I decided to share a fajita entree and asked for an extra plate. There was a $2.50 charge for the "split plate" - huh, for fajitas? I'm not a big fan of "split plate" fees, particularly when there's no splitting of the food for the staff. The drink orders weren't right, the margaritas were weak, and they only brought one small container of tortillas for the 3 of us (the 4th person had a burrito). Too bad. I had really wanted to like this place.

This is not a Mission style taqueria. Expect big burritos covered in enchilada sauce that you cut with a knife and fork.

Two words - pescado frito. They have the best, and it's huge, so be prepared for the stares of the other patrons when that monster is put in front of you (and the fish eyes staring at you can kinda freak out people too!)
I used to go every weekend to get this entree but for the past few years it's become hit or miss for them to have it available. I like the rest of their food okay, but nothing else really jumps out at me like the snapper.
The staff and owners are really friendly - wish they'd open for lunch and I'd probably be there more often. -

Food was mediocre but what really annoyed me is the fact that they charge for every basket of chips after the first one. What sit-down Mexican restaurant charges for chips?! Didn't know I walked into a chipotle or a tacobell.

This is the best place for Mexican in Livermore. We have been going there for years and feel a part of the family. The wait staff is excellent and knows my penchant for pico de gallo. They prepare anything as I request when I'm trying to eat more healthy and it's always worth coming here! The last time we went there was right before Christmas and they only had the one waitress and a helper-she worked her tail off and everything was served promptly.
Pricing is reasonable and the margaritas are incredible! -

To be spot-on, my rating is between an "Eek and a Meh"
Right up front I admit my family has only visited this restaurant once.
After one meal, we honestly had no desire to return simply
because we did not care for the food.
Service was ok; a lengthy wait for initially being acknowledged yet
service improved thereafter.
We didn't care for the chips served prior to the meal; they tasted stale.
All of our burritos were ho-hum and a bit bland...not bad, yet didn't
wow us at all. -

Livermore, CA
A tad pricey I suppose but very tasty. Lots of tables so it's easy to get in. I had 'Prawns from Hell' (I don't habla but I suppose it's sumpthin' Diablo). Very flavorful...to the point that I couldn't feel my tongue. I've been here several times and while I didn't get any Hollywood air kisses from the staff, everyone was friendly enough.
Go on a Saturday night and then head over to Downtown Ollie's next door for Karaoke night if you like enthusiastic off-key renditions of Tim McGraw songs. -

I used to love Anita's..
Back about 6 years ago and more.
Since then they suk!
ANd it amazes me!
They charge for refills on chips and salsa, and the chips really suck!
Fried in veg oil, now that is a sin to mexican cooking!
Ordering to go, you get a bag o-o-chips and a tiny 1/4 of a pint salsa if that at 2.75, what a rip off.
I got an expresso burrito the other night with the guac, if you want to cal pico de gallo with some under ripe avocado in it as guac!, sc inside, with mole on top. The burrito was HUGE and swimming and swinging in canned red sauce, yuk!
As far as being big, it was filled on one side w/dry crumbly rice that was sooo nasty, I was picking it out. Barely any cheese that I PAID extra for! SC and decent refried beans on the other. The pork was so unflavorful, fatty and tough that I ended up throwing away more than 3/4 of it, for about $9. bucks!
Will I go back? -

Anita's...I am so sorry it isn't going to work out between us. You see, when we were introduced by our friend, I was told that you were the best in Livermore.
I feel like you led me on.
You promised authentically prepared meats and I got over-cooked or over-wet and soupy fare. You promised delicious specials and I got gooshy enchiladas in unidentifiable sauce. You put ucky mole' on my son's taquitos! Your carne asada is dry!
oh I gave you the benefit of the doubt, so wanting you to live up to be my one true love. I returned time and time again only to leave feeling sad and disappointed. You Tease!
I just don't think I know who you are anymore.
Don't worry Anita's. It's not you- it's me. It's me that doesn't want to pay extra for mediocre chips and salsa to go. Or for a teeny tiny itsy bitsy cup of guac. It's me that knows there's someplace out there where I can get an excellent meal everytime I go.
I don't think we can be friends.
The 2 stars are for the service and my kid's chicken quesadilla. -

Livermore, CA
Anita's has far and away the best Mexican food in Livermore. I have been going there regularly for almost 15 years and have not been dissapointed yet. I would actually say it is more of a Restaurante than a Taqueria, since they have waiters and table service.
I recommend ordering from of the entrees For example, Chicken Mole, Pescado Frito, or Steak Picado. There are numerous good taquerias in Livermore, so if you just want a burrito or tacos, many different places will do. But if you want an excellent Mexican sit down meal, Anita's is certainly the best in Livermore. -

Stopped by here for lunch for the first time when I saws it driving down the street. Very solid, great Mexican food with a family feel. Service was extremely efficient, food arrived promptly. I had the taco/enchilada combo, surprisingly impressed with the quality of the meat and the ingredients. Chips were light and crispy, great salsa. Wonderful find for something I happened to stumble upon.

This place doesn't look like much from the outside. Its right near the parking garage and the new movie theater downtown, but you could blink driving by and miss it.
This place has great service and a full menu with all your favorites. I am particularly fond of the enchiladas suizas. Good prices, a great place for a group and for kids. I would eat here anytime. -

Please note this is only for the Tacos al Pastor.
Yes, I have found my perfect tacos al pastor. HOT, but not too hot ... a precise amount of yummy greasiness, and it wasn't dry ~ just fantastic! The tortillas were soft, the meat was moist, and an exact amount of food. I have been on a quest for quite some time to find great tacos al pastor, but I feel like Goldilocks trying porridge and feeling overly finicky about it. Why on Earth does it have to be in Livermore? Oh, well ~ its worth the drive.
I am also not judging my tacos on the hottie date that I had across the table either! He was yummy too, but I don't think there is a review section for that. -

We drove from San Jose to Livermore tonight for dinner at Anita's. It was well worth it.
Now, carnitas is my litmus test for most Mexican restaurants and I might have had the best carnitas I've ever eaten tonight!!! It was a huge portion too! Luckily my better half ordered my other favorite thing on any menu. Which is a ribeye steak. HUGE I SAY!!! Under 20 dollars for such a big steak and deliciously prepared too!!
Yessirreee we will make the trek again. Oh Yeah, Downtown Livermore has quite a little scene going on there. Makes me want to pack up the wagon and make a move.Listed in: Come Here to Comer

Livermore, CA
I convinced my daughter to go to Anita's over Chili's cuz I really just don't like that place at all. When picking a restaurant in Livermore for Mexican food we opt for Anita's over Casa Orozco which is only known for their margaritas' whereas Anita's has great food. The first indication the night wouldn't go so well was the almost ten minute wait to even get acknowledged. Please....the waiting area is only five feet square...it wasn't like we were thirty feet away or that there was a big decorated Christmas tree blocking us from view. I realize when you are busy that people need to wait to be seated but a simple 'Be with you in a moment' would have been appropriate.
We were seated at a table that was given a cursory swipe with a towel but it was still sticky. The server was surly and impatient for us to place our order. Why the hurry when you already made me wait?
The 'sauce' for the chips reminded me more of a tomato enchilada sauce. What happened to the diced tomatoes, chili's and onions? The guacamole while fresh had absolutely NO flavor. I ordered the Sangria which usually comes with some ice but this was served in a wine glass. Seriously I thought I was drinking something from a jug of E&J.
We waited over twenty five minutes for our food. I ordered the Super Tacos with Shrimp and Rice and Beans. Have you ever seen what a desiccated or freeze dried shrimp looks like? The poor little guys on my tacos were so over cooked that they were shriveled up and so embarrassed with themselves that they were trying to hide under the cheese. The beans and rice appeared to have been sitting on the plate at least fifteen minutes before coming to the table as they were cold and the top had that dried up look and texture. We both agreed that we should have skipped Anita's and went to Chili's on this night. Those poor little shrimps are sitting in a takeout box in my fridge but I have to ask why I even brought them home if I couldn't eat them there?
Don't get me wrong, normally Anita's has great service, food, and cocktails and I hate giving a mediocre review. I don't know what happened last night but they were definitely off their game. I will definitely go back to see if things are back to normal but it will be awhile before that happens. -
Review from Zac C.
I used to eat at Anita's all the time. But that was years ago. They used to taste authentic. But that was years ago. They used to have the best burrito in town, but of course, that also was years ago. It seems at a certain point they started catering to a different type of diner. They started selling lots of margarita's and it was rare to see a person eating a huge bony fish on a plate with a bottle of Tapatio. I think they were trying to compete with the Casa Orozco crowd.
Anyway I finally returned the other day with the in-laws and it was exactly as I expected. Bland and rather boring. They have a take out counter, but I would hardly consider them a "Taqueria". More like a sit down Mexican restaurant. They have remained in business for a while even though they "changed", so maybe they found their niche. It is just not so awesome for me. -

Cause Anita I'm giving you the best that I can...(digital underground). Man Livermore people have it made with this nice upscale Taqueria. Very jealous. The service was great, I'm not used to nice people actually doing a good job. OMG the burrito I had was so good, their refried beans were super creamy and tasty! Nom-nom. I ate the whole thing, usually I don't go that hardcore with my food. But if I'm ever in the area again, I'm so going here for a bite to eat. Oh yeah, make sure you get your burrito "wet." I know sounds dirty, but it means with red sauce poured on top. ; )

Anita's was my restaurant. I would eat here twice a month minimum. Always great food always great service. Then one day I got a bad burrito with some hair in it, and when I brought it to their attention the lady behind the counter accused me of waiting too long to tell her, or that I placed it or something, basically she had a total freak out. I tried to inform her that I wasn't asking for a comp meal, just giving them a heads up that their cook that day should be talked to; but she wasn't having it.
Having had my heart broken that my once favorite restaurant was being so rude after having such a big issue (I mean who wants pubic hair in their food?) I was ready to leave and never ever come back. The only reason I give 2 stars here instead of one is because the regular staff there was very apologetic and went out of their way to apologize. At least they recognized me as a frequent customer.
I was bummed.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Walnut Creek, CA
This is an outstanding spot for Mexican food and is definitely a local favorite. I used to live and work in Livermore and went here at least once a week. Now when I come to town it's my first choice.
Sure, you could go to Casa Orozco at the other end of downtown and spend twice as much for a fancier environment. That said, Anita's food is better than Casa Orozco at half the price. If you're passing through town and want a quick bite for lunch or dinner that you don't want to pay too much for, I highly recommend it. This is a traditional hole-in-the-wall mexican joint, so do be expecting a high-end environment or experience. They have certainly spruced the place up over the years, but it's no fine-dining experience.
They seem to be famous for their burritos which is what I get every time I go. It is at least as big as your head and is perfect for cutting in half and bringing home for lunch/dinner the next day. I frequently go with others and their enchilladas, tacos, and taco salad have all gotten great reviews from the people I've gone with.
I've looked at some of these other reviews and it seems like people are not really giving this place a fair shake. You have to look at this place for what it is, if you do, I think you'll have a great experience. -

Weekend..carnitas. Outstanding stuff, but tonight was Friday, so I guess they have it Friday until they run out Saturday or Sunday. I had this at Casa Orozco in Dublin, and it stunk. This was browned and crispy mixed with moist and chewy with a lot of flavor. It was basically perfect. The tortillas may be made on site. But if not, I can guarantee they were made today. Outstanding flour tortillas.
Stay away from their margaritas. WAY too sugary and sweet w/ no tequila. Stick to beer. I should give them four stars for this, but the whole city is a bit uptight so it could just be a response.
The food pulls through. Salsa..not the enchilade sauce that will come as well...but the salsa is perfectly balanced with a good dose of cilantro.
Service has always been outstanding from each of a few long time employees/owners.
This and my taqueria in Pleasanton are now the only two places I'll buy mexican food from. -

Well for the 15 plus years we have been coming here it has always been a positive experience! I personally never venture out to anything more than a Chile Verde platter! The wife always tries something new but not to extreme, tacos, enchaladas, flautas, chimichangas, yada yada! We always leave pleased with service, food quality and there take on mexican food! 5***** from us!!!!!

If I could eat at only one restaurant for the rest of my life I would pick Anita's. From the first time I went there, almost 4 years ago, to today, I am always treated with a smile. They are incredibly accommodating (I have been a raw foodist, a vegan, allergic to dairy, and a myriad of other strange eating patterns over the years) and they're gracious and understanding.
My top picks:
Melinda's Margarita - Mmmmmmmmm it's the best!
Side of guacamole - it is so fresh and creamy
Anita's Vegetarian Burrito - obviously I get it without cheese or sour cream, but I also get it without a tortilla or rice - this way I get an entire platter of whole beans, perfectly sauteed veggies, extra broccoli upon request, mushrooms, peppers, onions, and added guac on top.
As for their salsa, it can be hot. Mix it with some pico de gallo for a pleasant, refreshing alternative!
My friends' top picks (non-vegan):
Anita's Vegetarian Burrito (sans tortilla), add chicken
Quesadillas
Fajitas
Hard tacos with carne asada -

San Ramon, CA
So I just had lunch at Anita's and I'm feeling like it was a 2 1/2 star experience. I rounded up to 3 cause that just the kind of guy I am.
I had an Al Pastor Expresso Burrito which was... ok. First off, all the burritos come "wet", which is alright, but the enchilada sauce didn't really taste like enchilada sauce and there was Parmesan cheese on top. No, seriously. It actually says it on the menu "Comes topped with Parmesan cheese." Odd. Anyway, the sauce was too thin, and too tomatoey. Almost like a runny marinara... maybe that's why the parm. Not that it was bad, it just wasn't great. Second, there wasn't much meat in my burrito, and when you cut off a bite and it's swimming in sauce ,1) you're unable to taste much beyond the sauce, and 2) you wonder if a spoon would be a better choice. They also come with refried beans, sour cream, and guac, but when mixed with the previously mentioned sauce, you're looking at a pretty soupy result.
Finally, while the burrito was a pretty good size, I'm feeling much more full (and bloated) than I would've expected... and I don't think that's a good thing. You know how the Miller Lite ads say "Tastes Great, Less Filling"? Well the burrito I had was "Tastes Okay, More Filling". Is that what you're really after??? On the plus side, I've heard their Chile Rellenos are really good. Maybe I should've ordered that...

I was raised in El Paso, Texas. My mom was Mexican and all of my Aunts were great cooks. When I want to feel like I want a little taste of home, Anita's is the place I go. My favorite dish is the Enchilada Poblanos. The service is always great, food is wonderful, and it has a great atmosphere. We love them so much, we had them cater our 20th Wedding Anniversary.

Uh...I would highly discourage eating at this establishment. I was excited to go and try to find one of those awesome "hole in the walls," but this was not one of them. The service to the food and drinks were all extremely very poor.
We tried the margaritas and they tasted like hawaiian punch. The food was definitely canned food and a huge disappointment. We even tried to go for dessert, but their flan looked and tasted as though it came out of a can-it was sent back.
I hope you chose not to waste your time and money here - FYI I heard that this place might be closing down, but that might be just a rumor. -

This is my favorite Mexican joint in Livermore- sometimes I go just to order chips and salsa to go.
The salsa is the best- it's even a little spicy too, which I love. I usually order a huge container of it and a couple bags of chips. The hubster and I went there last week and actually had dinner. He had a regular burrito, which was HUGE and I had the Chili Colorado, which was delicious! Steak was tender and the sauce was spicy but with tons of flavor. Service was excellent.
The location makes it seem like it probably wouldn't be a prime place to eat (on Railroad- near N/S Livermore Ave) but don't be fooled, it's delicious! -

One of my favorite restaurants in town. The food is delicious and not over-priced. Also, excellent wait staff.
I'm mostly writing this review because I didn't get a decent lunch and would walk through glass to get a chimichanga with chili verde right now. They also make my favorite guacamole.
