I have been seeing Amiee, Anita Kurl's owner, for years, since well before she opened Anita Kurl . She has artfully cut and dyed me through long and highlighted, bobbed and banged, and my current pixie cut. I adore her AND the rest of the staff at Anita Kurl. They are funny, friendly, and fabulous, and the salon is always filled with laughter and chatter. Bonus points for days when Gwen, Amiee's sweetly placid chocolate Lab, comes to visit and sit serenely at my feet.
I always leave the salon with a smile and I always get asked who cuts my hair. Those two things will keep me coming back to Amiee and Anita Kurl forever.
Ahh, I've been meaning to write a review for months.
I've been seeing Derek for almost 9 months now, since they moved to this location (and I work just a few doors down). :) He does awesome haircuts and color!
A month or so ago, I actually was in a money-crunch situation and tried to dye my hair out of a box from the drug store. Long story short, I had to come back to Derek (completely ashamed) to have him fix it. It was a feat, but it was done. Yay, Derek! He saved my life...err my hair!
I really like this place! It's a cool location- and Derek gives a mean haircut! Asks what I want, but then offers suggestions and uses his hair-cutting expertise. Everyone is very nice and chatty- its an enjoyable experience altogether. I wish I was a starlit and could get my hair did every day! I would go to Anita Kurl.
Super place. Friendly staff, cute dog. Cory's been cutting my hair for at least 8 years now, and he gives the most excellent cuts!!! Most highly recommended!
Great place!! Kelley has cut my toddler's and my hair a few times and has done a great job.
Nicole recently cut my G-moms hair and did a wonderful job. She was so happy with the way it came out.
The staff is insanely welcoming and fun to talk to. It's like walking into a friends house for cocktails. Everyone is chatty and cracking jokes.
I highly recommend checking it out.

(I'm updating my review as I believe there's been a misunderstanding with a previous incident. The owner of the salon reached out to me and was very pleasant)
I've been here 4 times total, twice for cut and coloring, once for just cut and once to watch my boyfriend's haircut, all by errin. she's awesome. she's friendly, always smiling, a perfectionist. she listens to what you want and don't want and even remembers things you tell her from your every first visit (like i don't like the feathered layering by the side of my face). the atmosphere in this salon is just great. always a ton of laughter, etc.
I highly recommend this place as well as errin but if you're interested in making an appt you better call now as she gets booked up weeks in advance!
Just wanted to say, this place is still as awesome as ever. Derek did an amazing job on my hair last night. GREAT place and definitely worth the trip to South End now that I've moved out of the neighborhood!

So I went with Angela F here for her haircut for her sister's wedding, and even though I didn't get a cut from them, I'm impressed by Anita Kurl.
First off, the atmosphere of this place is similar to barbershops you see in the movies. The staff all seem like they are family, and the relationships they have with their customers seem to be regular first-name-basis.
Even though I sat there for about 40 mins waiting for Angela to get her cut, staff would walk by and chat with me, I'd play with the dog (they have a dog of the salon!), plenty of reading to flip through.
I must say, it was easy for us to make an appointment (I thought it was funny you could schedule a lunch with them), and the price was apparently pretty good (Angela was satisfied).
So if you are a girl, I'd say this is a pretty good place to go get a cut. As a guy, I don't know about $50 haircuts, but if I had the luxury, I'd come here.
It was interesting...
I went to Anita Kurl 4 times in 12 months. The first time I left feeling a little blah, but ended up in time loving the cut he gave me. I went in wanting to chop it all off (I have BIG curly hair, thick. long...) and he wouldn't cut it off. He seemed a little perturbed when he worked on it for so long and I didn't love it. It was big on top, mullety on the bottom, and I wasn't loving it. He did fix it before I left, but I could tell he was a little put out. I would have been upset with me too, knowing that I spent so much time sculpting this great hairstyle...but I wasn't happy with it, and ultimately, that's what mattered.
I went back and I ended up getting an appointment with Nicole.
Nicole was my goddess at Anita Kurl. She was new to the AK staff, but has been doing hair for a long, long time. She def knew her stuff, and how to treat someone who was uneasy.
I asked for a full chop, but was uncertain and wanted her professional opinion. She has hair similar to mine, so I had a feeling I could trust her. We made a deal: If I trusted her with this hair cut through the summer and still wanted to chop it in the fall, she would be happy to do so. I loved the suggestion (I could ease into short) and was THRILLED from the get-go with my cut - which NEVER happens!
For a curly girl like me, it was great to see I could have a haircut that wasn't just below the shoulders and cut in long layers. She did a cool cut where it was short in the back, and longer in the front - long enough it was weighed down and not bushy. Plus, she taught me how to best straighten it at home. I walked away with a spring in my step, and felt great.
I loved it so much, I repeated the style when it was time for a trim instead of chopping it all off.
But, still, curiosity still sat with me, and I wanted to chop it all off, just to see what it would look like. She did an amazing job, and she looked thrilled with the results. I was ecstatic. My showers went from 15 minutes to 4.
I love this place so much that I'd even go all the way to the South End even though I no longer work down the street for a cut by Nicole.
They do have a CC machine for the cut, but you have to give a cash tip (there is no place on the slip to provide extra funds). So bring some cash with you to your appointment.
cory has been doing my hair for 13 years. needless to say, my hair is gorgeous! he does a perfect color and a perfect cut. also, he's knowledgeable about hair and products. cory is the creme de la creme of hairstylists.
anita kurl is the most fabulous salon in the history of the world. while i am loyal to cory and can't say enough great things about him, every stylist here does an amazing job. i wish that i lived in there because i'd always be having fun and my hair would always be flawless.

Oh right, they do hair too, and the hair is fabulous. I have worked with Nicole, who has previously worked in the Back Bay and in South Boston...so I basically follow her migrant self around and I am ecstatic that she's here now.
Nicole does amazing color and cuts and is also pretty fun to be around. You can make your appointment online, which is super convenient and the price is right.
I have never had a bad haircut ever, and 4 different stylists have cut my hair. Think about it. Thats 9 haircuts a year times 3 years or for the mathematicians out there, 27 hair cuts
27 transactions without an issue. Thats pretty incredible
On the other hand, the conversation seems to revolve around Madonna and clothes.....Not much to offer a hockey fan like myself, but a great place
I've been seeing the owner Amy for probably close to 8 years off and on. I've followed her from a couple different establishments and my Mother and I have remained her clientele. She is the current owner and only works a couple shifts a week, but is fantastic. I've enjoyed cuts from Erin and Derek a well. I've only stopped going as a friend of mine now styles my hair. Also Amy's dog Gwen is usually there as well, whom I adore.

I currently live a block away from Anita Kurl and it's an emergency I need a blow dry hair salon.
They do a great job prices are amazingly low for the area. The girls are friendly and they have a lot of knowledge of what they are doing, which is always important.
My one and only grip was that they had a dog in the salon during my appt. I love pets but not in businesses.
I went to see Richard on the suggestion of a friend. I wanted somewhere affordable where I could get at the least a good cut, she mentioned that she had paid only $112 for a cut and color.
Richard did a wonderful job on my hair. When I walked in he was ready to go, I was also the first appoint, so I don't know how much that means. The cut is exactly what I wanted and what we discussed prior to him starting. Everyone knows how annoying it is when you ask for a certain amount cut off and leave with twice as much gone. I have pretty straight hair but a large wave that creeps in the longer it gets so sometime stylists have a tendency to cut it either too short or a little crooked, but Richard ask me all about my hair before he even started washing, I felt totally comfortable letting him cut my hair.
The conversation was also good, but not too talky; I laughed a good portion of the time I was in the chair. The stylists that were there were fun and talkative.
Oh, just to note they only take credit cards for the actual cut, color, etc.; tips are cash.
I would have to say that I've gotten one of my best haircuts at Anita Kurl. As with almost everyone else out there, it's hard for me to find a hair stylist that listens to my requests (meaning they don't cut a chunk of my hair off when I only asked for a trim) and more importantly, is consistent (meaning they give good haircuts when they're "on" and give really really bad haircuts when they're "off")! I decided to give Anita Kurl a try since all the reviews on Yelp were so great. My hair stylist was Aimee, the owner of the salon. She is GREAT! Not only is she good at what she does but she's so easy-going and friendly. I was a first-time customer but she treated me like I was a regular. Therefore, I trusted her with my hair. I asked for side sweeping bangs and a trim. She actually listened! Even though she only gave me a trim, the haircut was amazing! I was very satisfied with my haircut and was happy that I decided to come here for my haircut right before my sister's wedding.
It is a little pricey but maybe only because I'm used to the cheaper-priced salons in California. My haircut w/shampoo cost $60 including tip. Making an appointment is easy and convenient because you can schedule, change, and cancel your appointment online on their website. The other stylists are also very friendly and easy-going. You will not be disappointed because I've only heard good things about this place.
I am very happy with Anita Kurl. Cory did a the color and cut. He was very nice and my hair came out exactly like I wanted. I thought it was very reasonable for a full foil/cut/blow dry. I will be going back!
I got my first cut here today... Anita Kurl just moved onto Washington St., into a much larger and more open space, and they're not just 2 blocks away from work. On a whim, I walked in at 3 without an appointment and we got started right away! I'm never really descriptive about what I want a stylist to do with my hair, which is frustrating for some, but Derek pretty much read my mind and gave me a chic little Mia Farrow-esque cut, perfect for summer & super low-maintenance, which is key for me. I'm thrilled! Derek was an absolute riot and kept me talking and laughing throughout the 45 minutes or so that I was there. The two other stylists were also really nice and friendly. $52 + tip, definitely worth it for a comfortable salon experience and an awesome haircut... I'm sure I'll be back!
I've been trying to pick a salon since I moved to Boston and finally decided to give Anita Kurl a try based on the reviews I read here. I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised! Normally when I get my hair cut and/or colored I spend a day or two (sometimes longer) avoiding mirrors and sulking a lot. Not today. Aimee did a fantastic job on my hair! She made some great suggestions and was respectful of my wishes. Finally! A stylist who doesn't translate "I'd like to keep as much of the length as possible" into "I'm tired of having hair, please remove it"!
The ultimate validation came when a complete stranger stopped me on my way home to tell me how nice he thought my hair looked.
Anita Kurl is not just a South End salon with a snappy name. It's a funky little establishment with a fun staff that almost seems like family. I've been going here religiously for several years now and ended up making friends with each of the 5 stylists that reside here. None of the pretentiousness you might expect in the South End, and needless to say, they know what they're doing with a pair of shears.
