Are you looking for a new furry friend? Then head to the AWLA! They have cat, dogs and small companion animals like birds, hamsters, bunnies, and gerbils. I started volunteering a few weeks ago and it has been a great experience. The staff is so caring and shows lot of love and respect for all of the animals. There are also lots of volunteers there who spend time with all the animals and give them lots of love and attention.

I volunteer here and I have to say that the animals are the most loved and cared for of any shelter I have seen. A top notch shelter all the way around. Adopt here - don't buy from a pet store!

Awesome! I really must admit I don't have a comparison basis but this is the place that brought my buddy Link into my life so its hard not to love them.
They really are patient and understanding, willing to endure many visits as you (and your future pet) look to find each other. -

Not only did I adopt my cat here, but I've been volunteering approximately once a week for the past 5 or 6 years.
The facility is well maintained and the staff at AWLA are dedicated to finding a good home for every animal that they can.
If you are interested in adding a pet to your home, you should make AWLA one of your first stops. You can always see what animals are currently available for adoption by visiting http://www.awla.org -

These people rock.
The shelter is very well maintained, and run by some of the nicest people you could ever meet. All of the regular staff here seemed very knowledgeable and very caring not just of the animals the tend after but of the people who come in looking to adopt. We went through several interviews and a home visit before we were allowed to take our puppy home. The lady who came to see our house (Rebecca) brought us an endless supply of literature to go along with the dog, and thorough instructions on everything involving him.
They have quite a large selection of dogs, cats and even smaller furry creatures (gerbils, rabbits, mice, etc). I believe they even do birds as well. The fee for adopting dogs is almost nothing when you examine all the things that it encompasses (spay/neuter, first vet visit free, counseling, bath+nails, and much more). I truly feel the people who work here want to match up their animals with the best homes possible, so if you're looking for a new pet please check them out.Listed in: District Distractions

This is a loving, kind shelter staffed by great people who really love pets.
When my cat of 17 1/2 years finally had to be put to sleep, I immediately wanted another. The house was just too empty otherwise.
A friend had adopted from here many years ago - so I went on their web site to see if they had any kittens available. I spied a little white and tiger patched darling that 2 days later I went to see in person and adopted. He was about 10 weeks old then and now 2 years later he's a delightful ball of energy. Happily we return every year on the anniversary of his adoption to make a donation to the shelter. -

This place is where we adopted our cat (Mellow: we decided to keep his name). This place is friendly, clean, well staffed and very helpful. We had been looking for a cat for a while and we got lucky getting Mellow. He was so sweet and he brought so much happiness in our lives that I am so grateful that they saved our cat. This is one of the best animal shelters in the area. Thank you AWLA for our cat. This place will always have a place in our hearts.

Like some other reviewers, I can't help but love the place that brought my little buddy in to my life.
I adopted my dog from the AWLA a while back and I was very pleased with the experience. I eyed him online and went in with the hope of meeting him and a few other dogs I saw online that I thought would be good matches. The volunteers and paid staff were all great and were able to answer questions I had about the dogs' personalities, needs, etc. You could tell they really cared about the animals.
When I went through the adoption process, I liked that the staff was thorough in chec king to make sure my home would be a good one. They also made sure to really explain my dog's personality and needs. The personality assessment they gave me was spot on, as well.
Overall, it was a great experience and I'd highly recommend them to anyone looking to adopt. -

I originally went to the Animal Welfare League of Arlington 1.5 years ago on my birthday. I was just looking for info when I met the a 1 year old Pitt/ Akita mix who had been brought to the shelter as a stray. Since she was a stray, there is a 10 day grace period in hopes that her original owners would come find her - but I came in on Day 11. I sat through the required interviews and learned alot from people who did her personality assessment. They were completely on target, which is so impressive considering they had no historical info about her. A week later I was walking her home with me.
Almost 7 months later I went back to the shelter and ran into the woman who signed off on the approval for me to receive my first dog. She remembered me and was curious why I was back - I told her my girl needed a friend. She was very excited to hear that - but she was honest that at the time, she didn't thing they had a dogs who would make a good buddy for my girl. I said I would be back and sure enough a couple weeks later I saw a dog online at the shelter & I was curious. So I went back to meet her. And again, I ran into the same woman and she agreed that the girl I was looking at might just be the one & so I ran home & walked my dog right back down so that two could meet.
Now most folks are used to hearing that having two female dogs (especially two very active & assertive females) is a good recipe for disaster. But not these two, they played so well together. In less than two days I was learning about my soon to be second dog's history and behavior profile. This second dog, had been surrendered to the shelter twice (fyi, she won't be going back except for an occasional visit to say hi). Again their behavioral assessment was on target & they prepped me with lots of info of how the two girls may get along.
Its been just over a year & we are a very happy family - Thank you AWLA!!! -

A really nice thing about this shelter is that it's open to animals of all kinds from all jurisdictions: dogs, cats, birds and other critters. And what an impressive and pleasant animal shelter it is! I had to surrender one of my kitties due to behavioral problems and this place was the only one I called that had vacancy. I went expecting it to be hard to locate, crowded, old and dirty, with mediocre service. Instead, I found it to be easily accessible, spacious, new, neat and clean and well staffed. The team members are patient, knowledgable and efficient. Rather than try to rush you off the phone or out of the office they give you their undivided time and attention. They are also very informative and offer helpful tips. Another thing I appreciate is that they are very understanding and do not try to make people feel bad or guilty about giving up their pet. In the end, it's possible they may have to put my kitty to sleep but I am confident they will only do so as a last resort. I highly recommend a visit to their website. http://www.awla.org
Note: They also sell Anti Icky Poo for as much as 50% less than what other retailers charge. Plus they don't charge tax! -

Looking for a new animal friend? Then look no further than this shelter. This is not your father's dog pound. this is a up-to-date animal shelter that is bright, airy, clean and the staff are friendly.
I was first introduced to the League by a friend who a) adopted her cats from them and b) who now volunteers there. In fact my first interaction with the League was not at their shelter but at their annual fundraiser -- Walk for the Animals which happens the Saturday before Mother's Day.
I could not believe that 300 dogs could get along in one space! It is truly an amazing sight to be seen.
My first visit to the shelter was surprising -- in a great way. I was amazed that the place did not smell like animals -- even in the afternoon. I was also saddened to see so many animals needing homes -- especially the little ones -- and by little ones I mean hamsters, guinea pigs, bunnies, and birds. I didn't know you could adopt these animals. I guess it is true you learn something every day. I was also surprised with how staff easily discussed several "hot button" issues with me such as euthanasia and pit bulls.
So when you are ready to add a new member to your family, please don't shop -- ADOPT. -

The team there really is fantastic. They were responsive, helpful and friendly without being over the top. I also like that we were able take the cat home the same day we wanted her. Our cat is fantastic and she has been a great addition to our home.

What a breath of fresh air! After wasting a week trying to "qualify" for adoption from another place, we went to AWLA on Sunday afternoon, and in an hour we left as fully qualified adopters, with soon-to-be-ours dog reserved for us, and appointment for final counseling for the next day. All the staff was extremely professional and while guiding us through the process, never made us feel like "applicants", subject to evaluation. Compared to $300+ fees charged by other institutions, their adoption fee ($130), which includes microchip, vet visit, and a bunch of other services, is incredible bargain! And what's most important, the entire process is aimed at "people adopting a dog" (vs. "a dog adopting people", which some other rescue places seem to follow). Can't say enough positive things about this place! And others must agree, as the lobby was full of people adopting other animals - something we didn't expect. Keep it up, AWLA! We look forward to bringing our new family member home tomorrow!

I'd highly recommend AWLA fo anyone hoping to adopt a pet in the Washington Area. I had so much trouble with the DC Humane Society and nearly ended my pet search after two frustating attempts to adopt a cat with them. AWLA, however, was wonderful and very accomodating. They let you know the status of all of the animals and whether ohers have applied to adopt them (unlike the DC shelter). I spent over an hour in the play room near the cat cages spending time with a few different cats, and the staff knew the health history and background for every animal. When I decided on a shy, 8 month old stray, they were ready to do the paperwork and take her that night. They also called to check up on her when I brought her home and set me up with an area vet who is wonderful. My AWLA cat has proven to be a wonderful, loving pet! I continue to donate to the shelter regularly and still receive their rather clever newsletter in the mail.
