About the Business
The Animal Sanctuary & Care Society (ASCS) is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization that has been rescuing and re-homing homeless cats in Marin County, California for over 14 years. We take in strays, abandoned and many, many cats scheduled to be euthanized at shelters and provide them with the necessary medical attention to be fostered or adopted into loving, responsible homes. Those who are not 'adoptable' are cared for for the rest of their lives. Animal Sanctuary & Care Society is a "no kill" organization. We believe in spaying and neutering to limit over-population and reduce the suffering of homeless of cats.

This is an amazing animal rescue organization. They helped me when I found a stray cat that needed help. They picked it up and took it to a local vet to be checked out. The vet luckily found a chip and called the owners who said the cat had been missing for months! The owners were reunited with their pet. They were efficient and caring. You could tell they love animals.

They are so loving with the dogs and cats. My new cat did not want to leave with me. She stuffed herself in a small basket and refused to come out. They have alot of volunteers coming through and recording their play time with them: petting, just giving some attention. When I left, I did not feel bad for the others left behind. They were very happy

I support the ASCS in their mission of rescuing, fostering and adopting cats that are otherwise going to be euthanized. The owner, Debbie, works hard to rescue cats from all over the central valley and is very friendly and responsive. The cats seem happy and well adjusted. My negative review would be about the lack of screening/interviewing with prospective adoptors that can cause problems, and also lack of current listings, which seems to be a pervasive problem. I would rather have the volunteers rescuing cats if their time is limited, so it's only a minor complaint. These cats are also 'fostered' among up to 60 or more other cats--I would indicate this as a shelter, not a foster home. This distinction can have a big impact on the cat's personality and also how well the ASCS really knows the animals and how well of a match is made.
In hindsight of the adoption process, I wish they had used a survey and talked to us about what we were looking at instead of taking the attitude of "isn't he cute, why don't you take him home?". We needed an older cat, more independent and more shy to get along with our busy schedules and older cat who is now terrified of the very active 8 mo we brought home. Also the cat's description and personality were pretty different than how he was described. I can appreciate that cats change to the environment, but he was different within an hour of bringing him home, personality traits I would think someone who spent a little time with him would realize.
We may be returning him to be with a home that can give him the exercise, interaction and play buddy that he needs...they do take back cats that do not fit their homes sufficiently.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Catherine L.San Rafael, CA1179Mar 20, 2011
I have adopted two cats through ASCS and the people I have dealt with are very caring and responsible. This is a wonderful organization as they have many pets that will never be adopted that they care for.

Our family is so grateful to Debbie, Sam and ASCS for their amazing effort in finding our beloved kitty, Jesse a home. Upon finding out that our son had a cat allergy, we boarded Jesse and a week later put her up for adoption with this wonderful crew. Jesse was so well cared for throughout the whole process and her specific needs were met daily. In just 8 days, Jesse was in her new home with an amazing family. So many thanks again, we would absolutely recommend ASCS for their fostering and adoption process. They put our wishes and Jesse's best interest ahead of everything and we are eternally grateful.

Recently a stray kitty arrived, or was left, at the mobile home park where I live. He was such a sweet little guy that my neighbor and I didn't want to leave him to wander and get hit by a car or taken to the pound. I called my friend who fosters kitties for ASCS and asked if I could bring him to her. She checked with ASCS and they agreed to take Wile E. Coyote even though he came from out of their area. I so appreciate the work that ASCS does for cats and am very grateful that they rescued little Wile. He has been adopted now and I am sure he loves his new family. I am convinced that ASCS saved Wile's life.

I was in Petco when I ran into Debbie the owner of ASCS. I saw my "Max" within a minute or two. Debbie was so helpful. She brought Max to my vets a few days later so I could see him after work. On second look, I took him home and he's has been providing entertainment in our home for 2 years now. Debbie has a real dedication to all the cats she rescues and talks to the people who want to adopt to make sure they will be a good fit in their new home. If for some reason the kitty doesn't work out for a particular family, Debbie takes the kitty back. None of her kitties end up euthenized at the human society. ASCS has a network of foster homes so they know the cat's personality and whether they like other cats, kids or get along with dogs. I'd recommend ASCS to anyone. I also donate money several times a year to this group in gratitude for finding Max, my cat with the big attitude!

I adopted a cat from another rescue group and a month later it died. It was sick. That was certainly not the case with ascs. Their kitties are well taken care of, and they will literally take any cat, get it the help it needs, have it fostered and find it a home. This is an all volunteer group that is full of thoughtful caring people who use their time and resources to save cats that would be euthanized at a big shelter. I love them!
