I've been shopping here for over 4 years, and love this place. The prices are competitive with other major outlets (PETCO, etc), but the service and super super knowledgeable staff is priceless. Plus they are locally owned. It's important to support locally owned businesses because for the most part, and especially at Animal Farm, they can give you really good, informed advice about just about anything pets.  Don't always get that at the other places.

And the owner, or lady who is always behind the counter, is a very nice person. Some reviews say she is not friendly, I have known her for several years and I think she' s slightly gruff, but if you talk to her she is actually very kind, just not overly chatty.  She has given me tons of phenomenal advice through the years and I really appreciate her. I love it when people are good at their jobs. Kudos!!

They have most of the fancy cat food brands that frequent my kitty cats' chompers here. However, they don't have Blue Spa, which is the best cat food on the market despite the fact that it will make your cats smell slightly like cheese. I'm okay with that though. Last weekend we bought our cats a water-fountain-purification-cat bowl here. At first they were skeptical but now our cats are loving it. I recommend it to anyone. All in all, it's nice to support a local business especially when they have a selection that rivals the big competitors.

Based on a phone inquiry. Crazy rude. Same question (about finding a pet product) to nearby similar biz was no issue. So tough taking calls from pesky new customers. Ridicules.

I am in the dog apparel design business and I had some tank tops to sell at a reduced price, so I called up Animal Farm Discount Pet Foods to give them the opportunity to carry a luxury product at a discount price. I spoke with the owner/buyer and before I could get my full sentence out she hung up on me. She was incredibly rude. It would have taken 50 seconds for her to listen to me and than say, "no thanks."

I like the idea of supporting local-owned even if it's more expensive, and they carry hard to find brands like Orijen and Innova Evo.  I've never had a problem with product freshness or quality.  I also feed canned Wellness that I typically go to PFE for (hey I'm human and I'm trying to feed high-quality foods on a budget), but if I'm here I'll stock up.  My kitties also love the Wellness "Healthy Indulgences" chunks-in-glop packets that they sell.

THey also stock lots of different frozen food for raw feeders and their selection of supplies for non-dog and non-cat varmints seems extensive.  I figure if I someday obtain a pet gazelle I could come in here with no worries, and they would blithely hand over a bag of gazelle chow.

And the frequent-shopper punch cards do come in handy, although they don't amount to much in the grand scheme of things.  I figure it's the gesture that counts.

Hooray for new neighborhoods!!!
I simply adore the chance to explore the unique & (if you're lucky) amazing finds of a new 'hood.
I recently moved (yes, AGAIN) and this time I was Berkeley bound.
In search of a new spot to replenish my kitties survival basics, I walked over to Animal Farm.

First off, the location is brilliant.  Right on San Pablo and directly across the street from Cafe Fanny, Kermit Lynch and Acme Bread.
Brilliant I say.

The sheer mass of products in the store can be overwhelming, but it's big, well laid out and the prices are totally on par with other places I've shopped.  In fact, they might be a bit cheaper.

They have all the fantastic natural foods for your pets including the raw frozen foods and a great selection of dry food as well.  Everything from litter to grooming products to clothing and toys.  It's a one stop shop.

One of the greatest things they offer is a punch card for frequent shoppers.  This may not sound like much, but when you're dropping large chunks of $$$ in a store, it's nice that they recognize and at least give you some free shit once and awhile.
Hooray for free stuff!!!

I know this place is more expensive than Pet Labyrinths which are springing up like weeds all over the place, but I feel obliged to support the local vendors.

I like the knowledgeable staff, even if they would rather not interact with people. That's okay, they like my dog and that's their business.

Very nice independent pet store with a great selection of all the usual stuff - food, toys, collars, etc. etc. Their Wild Bird Annex next door is the best for everything BIRD. They have feeders and tons of different kinds of bird seed.

I found the best dog toy here - a plush tree stump with squirrels that "live" inside. You can hide treats in it too. Very little in the way of toys seems to entertain my dog, but this she likes.

p.s. They carry Eagle Pack dog food here. That's a plus.

When I used to work in the East Bay, I did most of my household and personal errand shopping in Berkeley and Emeryville.

Animal Farm was my 'go to' for pet (cat) stuff and there's a wide selection of food, accessories, litter and toys all reasonably priced.  The folks who work the store have always been helpful and friendly.  They also offer a 'frequent buyers reward' card - when you the limit you get some money off your next purchase (As of my last visit those amounts were $100.00/$5.00).

I'm not a bird kind of gal, but as noted in other reviews, they have a well-reviewed bird annex.

Support the good, local independents at Animal Farm!

I introduced wiener dog to his first retail shopping outing and bought the little booger 3 toys.

1) Bouncy rubber ball thing with legs. Wiener dog did not care for. Waste of my money.  :(

2) Rubber barbell-shaped thing with holes to stuff treats in and grooves to slather some peanut butter into. Great toy to occupy wiener dog's attention and get him out of my hair.

3) Bone-shaped plush toy with squeaker. Wiener dog was giddy as heck and proceeded to destroy it in record time by shaking the life out of it and stripping the faux fur off.

I'm heading back today to see what other wiener dog entertainment device I can blow my salary on.

::original review 5/16/06::

One of my favorite pet supply places is Pawtrero Bathhouse & Feed in Potrero Hill, because of their selection of organic, byproduct-free or raw diets for your furball (and great staff). Unfortunately, some of the everyday items such as litter is so expensive, even though it's not Gucci or Hermes brand litter.

Not here at Animal Farm. If you live in East Bay, this is a great alternative. You get a similar selection in terms of healthy quality pet food and litter. They also have a bird annex, so the bird and small animal supplies are pretty comprehensive as well. Things are not Pet Club cheap, but affordable.

Street parking in front of store fairly easy. They have a punch card that gives you a discount toward a future purchase once it's filled up.

I've been going to Animal Farm for 6 years now.  The place is great, to say the least.  When things get discontinued, they always have a great suggestion for replacements and are more than willing to provide you with samples to help you find your little furry, feathery and scaly friends exactly what they want.  In a nutshell, knowledgeable, awesome location, reasonable prices and nice folks every time at the counter.  It's no wonder I keep going back.

i'm feeling baffled and frustrated by this place. i've shopped there for decades, since numerous owners ago. it's so convenient and they generally have anything i need.

but in the last 6 months i've had to bring back 2 sacks of dry cat food because thought it was not past it's pull-date, it was spoiled enough that my cat wouldn't eat it.

now i have a 25 pound bag of sunflower seeds and i've run into the same thing. the birds won't eat it! (same seeds, same feeder, same place, etc. for 15 years)

i know she'd take it back, exchange it, but i don't have the heart anymore. i returned the two sacks of catfood, but this i can't even lift, and i just don't know if i should feed any animals un-canned food from there.

i called the catfood manufacturer and she said that yes, food can go bad before the pull date if it's stored the wrong way.

i don't think there's anywhere else around where i can do one-stop all-animal-food shopping.

has anyone else experienced anything like this? anyone have any suggestions?

My local pet store... with a hilarious name and house-wife like owner. Reasonably priced. Three stars cause they aren't very good for rat-owners ... cant find a terrarium there?

When my flower shoppe received orders for a doggie gift basket, I got to shop here for pup-sized treats of all shapes and sizes (they sell in bulk!).  I was impressed by the fact that they have a "frequent buyer" card. But there's a weird vibe about the place... dark, quiet, and a barely perceptible tension between the owner and worker...

I'm a fan of locally owned businesses especially when they're pet shops.  They have everything I've ever needed here, and their punch cards are a nice plus.  The employees also rock.  Go here.

I buy good food for my pets and this place has lots to choose from.  The chains just have the nasty by-product filled food.  I'm so glad there are a few non-chain stores around still.

The staff has also been helpful when I've asked for advice.

I pass by it on my way home from work everyday, so I started to get my bunny food from it.   I never have to wait long to pay for my purchase.   I am usually in and out of there in 5 minutes.   The staff seems friendly and always helps me right away.    I like to support independent local shops.

I was under the impression that big chain pet food stores would be cheaper due to the large quantity they purchase.   WRONG!

I forgot to stop at Animal Farm last week.  When I went to Petco near my house, I was surprised by the price for the exact same bag of bunny food!    It's $2.50 more at Petco for the same size bag from the same company!   I decided to wait and get it from Animal Farm when I pass by it next time.

Great stock of supplies in a convenient location.

Unfortunately the owner is one of the most consistently unpleasant people in retail I've ever encountered. She loves (and is knowledgeable about) animals. People? Not so much.

This is an establishment run by committed, knowledgeable folks. I have eaves-dropped on conversations regarding the difference between organic and people quality (!) pet foods, what makes a dog's skin itchy and what steps to take to address the problem and what toy will best suit your particular pet. I like the fact that I can ask a question and receive personal attention or wander the aisles and not feel that they'd really prefer that I buy something and leave. On Saturday's parking can be a challenge, but if you ask, they'll tell you to pull around to their driveway on Cedar and load your big bags for you.

I come here not because it's close to my home/work, but because they carry the food I prefer to feed Klausy.  I feed him a hard to find kibble, and Animal Farm always has it.  They carry a selection of high end, good quality pet food and pet products.  It's not just for dogs and cats, but they also have things for other critters.  The folks behind the counter are nice and knowledgeable.  If you find yourself across the street getting a cafe au lait at the infamous Cafe Fanny and you have a furry friend, pop in and check it out.

I live a few blocks from here. In fact, while I was walking Zorba (my dog) today, I meandered by and picked up some tasty Avoderm lamb and rice dry food (yes, it was a bit of a workout getting it home). There aren't that many places that carry it, so it is great that this cool place with the cool people with the helpful and friendly demeanors just happen to carry what the ole allergic scratchy pup needs to stay happy and healthy. Excellent.

I recently got into bird-watching and was advised by my coworkers to head to this place.  They claimed that there was a high school kid that with one question about birds will open the floodgates to orinthology.  I unfortunately didn't see this kid when I got there, but I did get knowledgable help from other staff members about the differences between the bird-feeders and the seed.  I had told them I didn't want to necessarily attract the squirrels, so they told me what seeds to steer clear of.   I can't wait to go back for a hummingbird feeder and their gourmet nuts and berry pack!

Seemed like a typical general pet store. Only needed wee wee pads, so didn't look around much. I always look at the toy section, and it was a little small for dogs. Fairly reasonable and probably has whatever you need for whatever animal you've got.

I love this place! The staff is wonderful and extremely helpful. Support this local business. When my cat wouldn't eat the vet-prescribed food for diabetes, the owner helped me find the right one. After three years, along with the support of my vet (see my review for Abbey Pet), this has helped me keep him stable. Also, the store is very eclectic and easy to get to: Cedar@San Pablo. You may pay a bit more than Petsmart, but you are supporting a locally owned business. Good people.

Hmm this was a small little pet store I never felt inclined to visit until I was looking for a particular brand of dog food which they carried. The staff at the shop was very friendly and helpful. Items in the shop was a bit cluttered, however, it's a very cozy and convenient neighborhood shop that carries high quality animal food, treats, and other items.

i love to support small business. especially when that small business goes above and beyond what you would find at a larger chain establishment. animal farm is a friendly, decently-priced pet store in berkeley. while it takes awhile for me to get there from downtown oakland, it's often worth the drive.

my only complaint stems from when the really nice sales guy recommended innova evo for my 5-month old italian greyhound puppy. innova evo has the highest protein content of any dog food out there. it's meant for dogs who do agility training and save people from burning buildings. giving that kind of kibble to an already overactive puppy who spends most of its day in an apartment makes for sheer disaster.  my baby dog turned my bathroom into a tarpit of shit. didn't help that she was running laps through it either in an attempt to burn off her extra energy. poor thing.

bonus points for their frequent buyer program!

Animal Farm is a great local business that provides quality service; this is Berkeley service, so don't expect a warm and fuzzy reception, but if you ask any question you'll get a knowledgeable, polite answer and you can browse without being bothers.
