Review 333 is dedicated to my new friends at Animal Acres, namely Honkey Tonk the donkey http://www.yelp.com/bi..., who won my heart when he pressed his head against me and leaned on me just like my dog does. And of course the cute geese couple, Valentino and his wife Valentina, who followed him around nagging at him like any good wife would do. =D

Located just a little more than half an hour north of Hollywood, this is a great place for children and adults alike, giving humans an opportunity to make a connection with some of the creatures we share this planet with. There are cattle, horses, donkeys, pigs, sheep, goats, turkeys, geese, ducks, and chickens. The turkeys strut their stuff, showing off the beautiful hues of blues on their faces, while a rooster crows, and a duck says something other than "Aflac". The kids I saw here absolutely loved interacting with the animals, but it does something special for the adults too!

They offer tours through out the day on Sunday and the staff does a wonderful job of presenting the facts and information in a very non-judgmental way, allowing you to simply enjoy the animals if you'd like, or to get detailed information about the rescue of the individual animals and the cruelty they have faced.

Animal Acres rescues animals that have been mistreated, abused, or just left to die by the cruel factory farm and slaughterhouse industries. To put it simply, these poor animals exist because people eat meat. Luckily, Animal Acres provides them with a place they can live as happily as possible. Unfortunately, Animal Acres can only save a miniscule percent of the many downed and dying animals out there because unlike the meat industry, they don't have the income to take over the country. But with the generosity of kind hearted people, they can keep rescuing animals and adopting them out to loving homes.

Over 90% of their funding needed for rescue, education, and advocacy efforts is provided by Animal Acres members. Sunday tours are $5, but it only takes $25 to become a member, which includes free tours and discounts at local businesses (http://www.animalacres...). You can even adopt a farmed animal for as little as $10 a month.

My hope for the people who visit Animal Acres is to see how much all animals have in common; humans included. I couldn't help but compare a pig grumbling at another to my own dogs, or the way certain animals acted to certain people I know (hard headed goats butting heads, know anyone like that?). If you would never image eating, skinning, or milking a dog or cat, why would you want it done to any other animal? You may not support racism or sexism, but do you support speciesism http://animalrights.ab... ?

In the amount of time it took you to read this review, it is likely that these animals were killed in support of the meat, dairy and egg industries (from http://www.beautomated...): 80 buffalos, 4 camels, 957 cattle, 158,444 chickens, 8,501 ducks, 1,278 goats, 15 horses, 4,370 pigs, 1,794 sheep, and 2,018 turkeys.

Education and compassion are wonderful gifts, and Animal Acres does a great job at providing them to those who are open to learning.

Animal Acres is one of my favorite places to go.  I love to see all the saved turkeys.  The tour given is great and informative.  I would recommend attending events Animal Acres holds.  The goats are precious too.  This is a great family place to visit and appreciate life.  I love it!

I wish this animal sanctuary was closer to LA... just kidding.

Animal Acres is a safe haven for would-be-slaughtered livestock, rescued from nearby slaughterhouses. (most of these animals escaped, or were saved by individuals)

It's a serene, clean area 45 minutes northeast of Hollywood, surrounded by canyons that you knew used to be under the sea, millions of years ago.

I came here for their annual Thanksgiving event--Feed the Turkeys, plus a Vegan Thanksgiving feast.

I don't mean to go all mushy and cuddly-duddly, but seeing these animals so free and playful, in their simple, natural states of being, made me realize how weird it is that they are also being served on plates somewhere. I think everyone in my family was affected. It's one thing to read about animals in a book, it's a completely different feeling to be with them.

I am glad I dropped by Animal Acres; I will make time to return during another one of their events.... it's truly a fresh breath of air amidst all the busy hustle-bustle of the typical LA/Hollywood fare.

This is a beautiful, peaceful sanctuary for animals who have been abused, neglected, and almost killed.  It is amazing how these animals learn to trust people after all they have been through.  The animals are incredibly loving and so much fun to be around.  It will bring tears to your eyes to see an animal who has lived in a box its entire life be able to take its first steps on soft hay, interact with other animals, and be treated like living things instead of products.  You will also learn a little about the horrific ways these animals were treated before being saved.

The staff and volunteers are amazing people, especially the ones that participate in the rescue of the animals.   They do not bombard you with information guilting you into veganism.  They do however, encourage compassion and respect for the animals and will enlighten you on the ways these animals were treated, without being graphic.

Sunday tours are available for $5 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.  Feel free to pack a VEGAN picnic and relax in the patio.  There is also an events calendar on the website, so check out some of their great events.

This is a family friendly location, however, pets must stay at home.

Attendees should understand that this is a Sanctuary and NOT a petting zoo.  Visitors may pet the animals, but they must also understand where these animals came from.  Please be sensitive.

The sanctuary also has a thrift store in Palmdale called Nellie's Barn, so if you have any items you would like to donate, please drop them off at the Sanctuary.

Visited Animal Acres for the 11am tour one Sunday and am so grateful for such an amazing experience.

The facilities are very nice and the grounds are lovely but what really makes Animal Acres so memorable are the rescued animals. Goats of all sizes will walk up and take a gentle nibble of your shirt. Turkeys will sit in quiet dignity and allow you to pet their feathers. Pigs will flop onto their sides and happily accept belly rubs. Brontosaurus-sized cows will slowly meander by (seriously, I had no clue cows could be that enormous) and even an emu might let you get close enough to admire it's feathers. You can't help but be touched by the sweet, unique personalities of every animal, especially considering the cruelty they've all experienced.

The high-energy, very informative tour guide gave interesting bits of history for most of the animals and explained the purpose of Animal Acres very well. Taking into consideration the children in the group, her talks weren't graphic but I do appreciate that she did explain the realities of factory farming and what other less fortunate farm animals experience on a daily basis. The gift shop had plenty of books and literature on veganism (no preachiness at all so omnivores don't need to become defensive) as well as t-shirts and other items (and opportunities to sponsor an animal or become a sanctuary member). If you bring a vegan picnic lunch with you, you're welcome to sit and eat in the very pretty, relaxing courtyard once the tour is complete (it would be insensitive to eat a chicken salad sandwich in front of a rescued chicken, yes?).

At the risk of sounding totally sappy, visiting Animal Acres was one of the most moving experiences I've had in a long time- being nuzzled by sheep who survived horrific conditions yet are still trusting and dearly affectionate can't help but break your heart wide open (in a good way). I'd recommend the tour (and becoming members) to anyone and everyone. These folks do great work and definitely deserve as much support as possible.

I volunteered here a couple of times a few years back. I still get their newsletter, and wish I could help out but this place is a pretty far drive from me.
There are so many animals here that have been rescued from farms treating their animals inhumanely. It made me sad to see all of the damage that has been done to the animals, but happy to know that they had been rescued. People like animal acres deserve the help and donations. They go above and beyond for the animals. Thank you Animal Acres!

We drove here on a whim, on a Sunday, to check it out.  This place is great.

The lady that gave us the tour ( 6 others), Siddy (sp?), was very welcoming, and apologetic about the weather- cold and windy.  But she gave us a great tour, showed us the animals they had there, and gave us a brief blurb about how the animals are all from profit farms, and that all their animals were cruelty cases.

They had emus, goats, cows, horses, a bull, a new calf (14 days old), and pigs.  One of those were 700 lbs.  They had all been rescued from slaughterhouses and abusive parents.  They have a small hospital and lots of volunteers.  We became members and are going to become volunteers as soon as we move closer!!

How much fun is Animal Acres? Too fun! My Valentine's Day 2010 treat was a trip to Acton to meet and greet some lovely rescued farm animals. The whole experience was wonderful, and you really get a chance to hang out and bond with all kinds of animals-- from chickens to sheep, from goats to 300 pound pigs! If you're lucky enough to date an animal lover, this place is an excellent date spot! The surroundings are lovely and the prices are fair. Definitely check out their website and plan your first visit to meet "the kids" down on the friendly farm.

I LOVE ANIMAL ACRES!!!!  I love it so much that I'm going to the gala.  I'm so excited because I found out Madeleine Bistro is catering it and they are my favorite restaurant.  Yay!  Animal Acres is such an awesome organization.  Its a great place to learn and see about the serious mistreatment of farmed animals.  Though this is a serious issue it is really fun and uplifting to be there among all the friendly people and animals.  I met some ducks, turkeys, geese, chickens, roosters, pigs, goats, sheep, bulls, cows, rams, wolf, & kitties!!!!  They were all very sweet and I can't wait to visit them again.  Animal Acres is always offering events and tours.  Great place to bring kids and kids disguised as grownups.

Only 45 minutes outside Los Angeles, a visit to Animal Acres is an absolute MUST.  It's a wonderful experience to get to spend time with these amazing animals.  They have tours on Sundays for $5 per person at 11AM and 1PM.  The tours are a great way to get familiar with this little paradise in Acton for animals and the people that love them.

I love this place. I am a member and if I lived closer I'd volunteer every week. It's a great experience to go on the sunday tours so you can learn about the sanctuary and all the different animals. Great for kids and adults, and whether you are a vegan, vegetarian or neither, you will really enjoy this place and learn a lot. If you become a member you'll get free tours for you and another person. It's a nonprofit so donations are always appreciated to help the animals!

Animal Acres is such a great sanctuary! They do all they can to help animals in need while also educating people about the realities that happen to these abused animals. People can come visit these friendly critters who have so much love to share even after the hardships they have encountered before reaching this paradise! My whole family has a great time every time we visit!
