Review from Bro H.
Syracuse, NY
This place is super cheap, and good for the price. Should you stop in if you're on a weekend-long visit and looking for the best Syracuse has to offer? Well, no. No shit. If you're hungry and want two meals worth of food for under ten bucks, you can't do much better. We got the baked ziti with ricotta (7.95) and lasagna (6.95) and ate about half of each. The pizzas looked great and are under ten bucks for a large as well.
Service was attentive and friendly. I disregard a lot of Yelp reviews when it comes to describing service. If you can't hide the fact that you're an insufferable pretentious douche in a short Yelp review, your server was also probably more than aware of how terrible you are and they probably treated you accordingly. Everyone at Angotti's made sure to say "hi" or "bye" and the owner was standing around making sure everything went smoothly.
Anyway, if you've moved to Syracuse recently and are looking for a cheap meal in a friendly place, give Angotti's a shot. -

Been going to Angotti's since my father turned me on to it in the late 1980's.
Best red sauce in the Syracuse area. Not to mention the best Veal.
Also best to go early. After 6PM figure on standing line.
They've trimmed the hours down mainly IMHO because both momma (head cook) and poppa (runs the front) are both in their 80's.
Try a calzone...For under $6 if you finish it consider yourself a pig LOL
Again IIRC their's 3 generations working there now, but seems to me Momma keeps the recipes to herself. Really hope she hands them down. Would hate to lose my favorite red sauce joint. -

It pains me to write this review because it makes me seem like the bad guy compared to all the positive reviews for Angotti's and giving low ratings is a rarity for me to begin with.
My mom and I hailed all the way from California to Cuse for some potential schools that I could transfer to the following fall. After a wonderful day in Ithaca, my mom and I trekked back to Syracuse and eventually, got hungry. I yelped, but it didn't look like there were many places worth going to because not that many people yelped about Syracuse (aside from the Dinosaur Barbeque..I regret not going there now!).
I stumbled upon Angotti's and although it was Italian (there are SO many Italian restaurants around), we decided to go there because from the other reviews, it looked like it would be alright on our budget.
Walked in, up the stairs and wasn't greeted. Strike one. Granted there was a party of 7 before us, but even so, when I looked to the owner, he tried to divert eye contact. Perhaps he was busy working/bussing, who knows.
Anyways, when we were finally seated, we were put in a corner, which was alright with me, I was just starving and needed food. Got our menus and waters. Waitress asked if there were other drinks that we wanted, mom said no, but I asked for some lemons. I like lemon with my water (: She said, "Sure." I didn't see her for a good while. When she finally gave me my lemon, my mom and I were ready to order. She took our orders (a bit too hastily). Mom and I both ordered from the "Specials" menu because since it IS a "special," we assumed it would be better than anything on the menu. I ordered the calamari on pasta and my mom got the seafood special over pasta. Both w/ a tomato based sauce.
Another 10 minutes passed (we're at 30 minutes) and we got bread. This isn't the nice, delicious, warm, fluffy on the inside crunchy on the outside, bread. This is soft, cold, no crunch on the crust white bread we received ): I took one bite and couldn't take it. Plus I didn't want to spoil my appetite by being full on bread, so I waited for the entree.
20 minutes had gone by and I was getting weary. The waitress did NOT come by as much as I would have liked. We're approaching about an hour now; no food OR service. When our food finally came out, I expected to at least have some wow factor towards taste. I love calamari, but the calamari I had in my pasta was essentially fish in the shape of squid rings. Not appetizing at all. My mom sort of enjoyed her dish. She didn't like the fish, she said it had too much of an overbearing flavor, as if it sat out for a while before cooked (assuming this was a fresh catch). The pastas we both had were the same, alongside the sauce. The only difference was the choice of topping.
Needless to say, I left the restaurant very hungry. I did not enjoy my food, I did not enjoy the service. Never have I encountered such unhospitable behavior from a server. I only wish I could get the voices from the tables around me that night because they, too, saw the grievances my mother and I was having. Because that table showed up after us and had a party over 8, the very same waitress paid more attention to them, than us. When my mom and I were trying to ask for a to-go box and the check, she walked by, we tried to flag her down but we didn't want to interrupt her as she was serving the food. She put down her tray on a tray-holder and continued distributing.
When the tray was empty, I expected her to come back to retrieve it, in which I would ask her to get the necessities for a proper departure. She didn't get the tray. After the last bowl of salad was set down, she returned to the kitchen. WHAT?
Sitting and waiting for SOMEONE to notice us (even when we tried to flag people down), I couldn't take it anymore. I had to tell the waitress straight up, "bring me my check and the box. NOW."
Maybe I'm just being pretentious because I come from California and was raised on giving and receiving quality service in restaurants. All I know is that I have never given that terrible of service in any situation and job that I have held. -

OK...there isn't any better for food value!
Atmosphere: Loud at times, but hey...a loud restaurant=lots of people=good food over and over again. AND you can't beat a restaurant where the owner is there nightly seating guests.
Food: Traditional Italian-American fare that is equal in flavor and portion size
Prices: The price of an entree at this restaurant is the price of an appetizers at most others in Syracuse. AND you receive MUCH more than you can finish. (Well, I do)
Service: Is the reason that it doesn't receive 5 stars. Sometimes you get phenomenal service, but don't arrive close to closing. They aren't happy with late arrivals.
Added bounuses: TONY BENNETT HAS DINED HERE!!! Pictures in the hallway to the dining room prove it! -

This place is a restaurant staple in my family. We come here for almost any occasion we can think of ... family visiting from out-of-town, celebrating good grades in school (ah, the good 'ole days), proms, just going out with the family on a Friday night, going out to dinner before a show, etc. We've been going here for years, and even though I now live in Chicago with some of the best food around, I miss this place.
Reasons why:
1. It's dirt cheap. Seriously. You can get a pizza for about 6 bucks, and it'll feed three people. And their dinner salad? If it doesn't come with your meal, it's about a buck fifty.
2. Portions are huge. For the price, you think you're getting a tiny plate, but that's so not the case here.
3. Good homestyle cookin'. You feel like you're at your Italian Grandma's house when you're here ... even though your family is Irish.
4. Mr. Angotti. He's there every night seating people at their tables, and even though he may seem like a grumpy old man, he really cares about the service you're getting and your food quality.
5. The service. This place can get really busy on Friday and Saturday nights, but the service has never been horrible. It can get slow when it's crowded (like any restaurant), but the waitresses are always friendly.
Bottom line: Come here with an empty stomach and you'll be well-taken care of at Angotti's. Just be sure to expect to wait on a Friday and Saturday night, as the line to get in is usually out the door.Listed in: Homeward bound

Angotti's deserves five stars for its good Italian food and unbeatable value. It's not upscale, but it's much better than most of its upscale competition. Angotti's is a charming place that always draws a really nice crowd of people. The New York Times review says it all.

Syracuse, NY
A friend and I recently had dinner here before a show at Syracuse Stage. I'd heard good things and was really looking forward to a good Italian dinner. Unfortunately, I was seriously disappointed by not only the food but the service, too. It started with parking. Street parking only, and the moat of slushy water between the street and the curb made it nearly impossible to even get to the restaurant. Then the wait... The wait was ridiculously long! From the time we ordered it took 45 minutes to bring two plates of rigatoni with the "homemade" sauce. The sauce was uninspired and watery. The rigatoni obviously came out of a bag of mass-produced frozen pastas and had barely enough spinach filling to produce a thin green line in the center of each piece. I've had better pasta from the freezers at BJ's Wholesale. The waitress, despite only waiting 3-4 tables, acted overwhelmed and overworked and disappeared for 10-15 minutes at a time. Maybe she was the cook too? Whatever the case, I won't be returning to Angotti's.
