Definitely come here if you are craving something simple, fresh, and delicious !

My boyfriend and I came here for an early dinner on a Monday night. It wasn't too crowded, which was nice because it is a very small intimate restaurant. The waiters and sushi chef were very attentive and sweet. We sat at the sushi bar because we like to order as we eat and ask what different types of fish they have that day.

We ordered 2 orders of everything:

Sweet shrimp: so buttery and fresh !!! The fried heads were amazing because they take out the shell for you before they fry it.

Hamachi belly: very fresh and smooth

Albacore sushi: melts in your mouth

Spicy yellowtail hand roll: so good!

Nigitoro hand roll: always good here!

Unagi: warm and there was not too much sauce !!

DONT FORGET TO ASK FOR THE YUZU-CHUSO!!! (they don't carry this at all sushi places .... And that's why I love this place) its a lemon and green pepper paste that you eat with your sushi and sashimi.

Dinner for two came about to be around $65 but definitely worth it!!

I will be coming back soon.

Super fresh sushi at this extremely tiny sushi place.  If you have a party of 6, you better call ahead and make a reservation.  Otherwise, take your chances and wait a long time since they really only have tables that fit 4, and there only a handful of tables.

It gets expensive here but definitely try this place if you're in the area or going to shop at Mitsua next door.

Small place but sushi was great! Arrived around 7p on Saturday and we were able to sit at the bar, recommend. We found on yelp. Honey and I had the BBQ giant clam, sushi giant clam (thick slices and yummy), aji, blue crab roll (skip it, basically CA roll), Conch cooked, blue fin toro (buttery), tataki (thick slices), black cod in miso (like butter), yellowfin ribs (on the house were delicious).

We were looking for an exotic sushi place and stumbled on this place in yelp. We are regulars at Maki Zushi which is still better for exotics but would not mind returning. Staff was great and chefs were friendly! We would give 5 stars if it carried more exotic items. :)

You did not lead me astray on this one fellow Yelpers! I was on business and stayed at a hotel near the restaurant. Heeding the advice about it being a small restaurant, I arrived early and was seated at the sushi bar.  The server was very attentive, and I appreciated the warm towel to clean my hands.  After reviewing the menu, I decided the only thing I must have was the blue fin toro, and told the Chef, otherwise to surprise me. After asking if there were things I don't like (hadn't found one yet) we were off on a culinary adventure.

I started with the blue fin toro, which melted in your mouth! Very rich in flavor.

The second dish, I missed the name but the sauce was a nice sweet touch.

I had a Spanish Mackerel, which I had not had before and I loved the full, fatty flavor.

Followed that up with a salmon sushi, that was beautifully presented and full of flavor.

Had a shrimp dish, he removed the heads and shell in front of me. It was mild in flavor, but I enjoyed it. I was about to mention to the Chef that I had reached my limit, when I was surprised with the shrimp heads, deep fried.

I will admit, this is not something I would ever order, and I freaked out for a second, but not one to offend, I bit in. I must say, I was surprised at how tasty it was. Which is in part why I like to let chefs surprise me, I get out of my comfort zone.

As a solo diner, I appreciated that he paced the meal for me, and answered some questions I had about the fish. The servers kept an eye out on me throughout. The food was simply presented but very solidly good. If I lived down here, I could see this as a regular thing.Oh, and by the time I left, it was packed.

This place used to be great! Affordable and fresh. I came back for my yelp deal and was no longer impressed with their selection. I actually got a stomach ache after my meal. I haven't gone back since. If I do come back, I would definitely just eat from the cooked menu. The spicey Chilean Seabass is badass! I love it!

Since I love Nana San so much, I had to visit the place where Goro worked at for so many years. This tiny place is solid for the money. Most pieces will cost you around $4.50, which is in the medium range for most places I go to. They don't have a huge variety, but what they serve is pretty tasty and I'm giving them a solid 4 Stars.

I perused the menu and some things did pique my interest. But it was lunch time and I wasn't super hungry. I decided to order just sushi and skip the kitchen items even though they sounded very good. I started out with red snapper http://www.yelp.com/bi... This was soft for the most part, but had a slight chew in some parts.

Next, was shrimp boat because many people have mentioned it. http://www.yelp.com/bi... This was pretty good. Lots of flavor going on here with the eggs and green onions. I think I would go sweet shrimp next time because I love the taste of raw shrimp much more than cooked shrimp.

Yellowtail was quite good. http://www.yelp.com/bi... This was very soft and clean tasting and I was surprised since it was a darker cut. The darker the cut, usually means it is further away from the belly, which is whiter.

Aji was soft and clean http://www.yelp.com/bi... I wished they would have deep fried the bones like several places I've been to. At $4.50, I knew I wasn't going to get it. But I would definitely pay extra for it though.

Salmon was extremely soft and good. http://www.yelp.com/bi...

I would come back here again, but only during the non-peak hour. This place is too small, fills up quickly and the parking really sucks in this area. Hopefully next time, I'll get some banter from another sushi chef though. The chef I had mainly kept to himself. If I wanted to eat my meal in peace, I would have sat at a table.

I enjoy interaction with the sushi chefs and one reason why I sit up front, versus in the back at the tables. If I was a patron of this place while Goro was around, I would be saying, "I sure miss Goro!" Dining at sushi bars is about the whole experience. I give 5 Stars out to sushi joints not because they have the best sushi around. I consider the quality to the price and also the interaction between me and the chef. If it were based on quality alone, I don't think I would give any place I've been to so far 5 Stars. Maybe for that to happen, I might need to fly out to Japan and experience Jiro San http://movies.yahoo.co...

A delicious traditional Japanese sushi bar. I typically go to Kaisen, but I'm glad to have tried something new.

The salmon boat is like a small bomb of flavor - thick salmon, roe, and a raw egg, with a little spice to it. Shrimp boat is the same, albeit not as delicious.

I ended up getting the poke bowl, a giant, delicious concoction of rice and marinated sashimi with avocado. It also came with a miso soup and some sort of egg souffle with crab and edamame in it. I was pretty happy, overall.

Excellent quality, good service, a little expensive, a small restaurant, but would definitely come back!

Came here on a busy Saturday evening. The restaurant is quite small and authentic, with only a few tables and a sushi bar, so I expected it to be fully packed.  Oh it was!  It was around 7pm but the server (Allen) was super friendly and gladly took our name and phone number to call us when our table was ready.  Because of the little waiting/standing room inside, we decided to just wait in the car, but turned out the wait was surprisingly short (only about 10-15 min).

We were promptly seated and our orders were taken so efficiently.  Dishes/sushi came out as they were prepared, so we never waited more than a couple minutes before our table was replenished with goodies =) The most memorable were the blue fin toro (superb!!), the blue crab handroll, and the spicy scallop handroll, but all their dishes were great. The miso black cod was also tasty and more generously portioned than most other Japanese restaurants I've been to.  Fish served here is fresh, service is quick, and prices more than reasonable.

The only con I can think of is that because it is such a small space, the tables are pretty close to each other and you don't get much privacy (we could hear other tables' conversations pretty clearly).

    Great find!  Will come back!

been to this place ever since I was 17.  Nothing has changed since I was 17,  this place is very good, quite authentic.. its also good to see the sushi chefs picked up some english over 10 years (they hardly spoke any back then).  some of the waitresses are still here too.  the price is very very very decent for the quality, but it is not the best of the best, like top 1% sushi.  I would say this is more like a top 5% sushi, but the price is a bit over average.  so over all, dollar to quality, is the top.

Now, i am comparing this to the sushi I had in top 10 places in Osaka, Japan or top 25 places in Tokyo.  Obviously this is not a fair comparison.  So for the best you can get in orange county, CA, I would like to give a 5*, although if this was in Osaka or Japan I would give 4*.  but the rating had no half star option, so..

oh yeah, this place can be really packed really fast.  if it is packed, try the bento place on the left.  very cheap, but pretty good.  its not sushi though.

also noticed difference in quality at the end of the day, like at 10 pm, versus 5 pm when it opens.  earlier the better, of course.

they are all pretty good, but I would like to recommend sea bass sushi which they dont have every day.  ask them if they do.

Visited here on a Friday night and we sat at the bar. The restaurant is small but cozy.

Not sure exactly how many pieces of fish we ordered but every one was delicious. Angotei isn't quite up to the level of the many excellent sushi places in LA that I've visited but I would definitely return.

The chef who served us was friendly and service from the waitresses was superb.

I purchased a Yelp deal for $50 for $100 worth of food. BEST. DEAL. EVER.

With 3 other girls in tow - we definitely got our money worth of sushi! The service was impeccable and it was intimate enough that we felt like we were in our own world chit chatting away over some sake, sushi, and good laughs. My favorite would have to be the Shrimp Boat! Gotta have.

Depends what time and when you there may be a wait, but what good sushi joint doesn't have a wait due to size and deliciousness? I think that's expected. If you're in the neighborhood, definitely give Angotei a try.

Super pricey, but loved the fact that they ran a yelp deal. The sweet shrimp boat alone is worth the 5 stars. I am serious. Go get yourself one (or two or three) and thank me later. The quail egg bursts and coats your mouth with richness as you taste the sweetness of the shrimp, the saltiness of the roe, and the taste of the ocean. Added bonus - the chef fries up the head, which turns into the perfect balance of crispiness and warm, gooey, rich insides. I'm trying to stay away from this place for the sake of my wallet, but writing this review has made me crave it more.

Came here with the hubs bc we were in a sushi mood and wanted to try something new. It's a small, quaint, very authentic Japanese sushi restaurant. Very small-about 4 tables and the sushi bar. We waited about 20 mins. We had the omakase and it was really good. We had the blue fin tuna, soft shell crab hand roll (with lots of crab and minimal rice!),  Spanish mackerel, yellowtail, red snapper, salmon egg, unagi, sea urchin, tamago, and miso black cod. We probably had more but I can't remember. Everything was excellent in size, taste, freshness, and price!  It reminded us of eating food at Kasen but much more reasonably priced. For 2 people and 2 large beers our total with tax and tip was ~$100.

Three words: blue fin toro. I would give this piece 5 stars alone.

The last two times I came here, I was subjected to a mouth orgasm from this delicious cut of fish. Fresh, delicate, fatty and melts in your mouth - you don't want to chew piece quickly. The boy and I have learned to savor this for last, as it leaves a lasting impression on the taste buds.

The rest of their menu is great as well. My girlfriend that introduced me to this place swears by their soft shell crab hand roll. Just the right amount of crispy, flavorful soft shell crab mixed with rice. I've had several salads, hand rolls and sashimi which I enjoyed, though the blue fin toro still tops the cake.

It's a small place, so don't expect to bring a large party here. The intimacy is what makes this place - great customer service, very personable chefs and staff, that provide great suggestions to already fantastic choices in sushi cuisine. Already looking forward to my next trip there!

I love the food quality & selection here at Angotei!

    Here's what I ordered (and recommend) -
    Sushi: Uni & Toro
Appetizer: Baked Giant Clam & Shrimp boats
Rolls: Rainbow & Soft Shelled Crab

The sushi was sooo good that my date and I ended up getting another round.  The fresh quality & presentation deserves 5 stars.  Downside: there's only 4 tables in the entire restaurant so it's cramped and the wait can be long.  The service was a bit disappointing but it could have been an off day for them. Either way, I'm a fan & will be back!

Yelpers did not disappoint!  Fish feels like they're still swimming.  :-)  Fresh!  We sat at the sushi bar and ate to our heart's content.  Final bill was $67 before tip, so the price was very reasonable for what we ordered.  Tiny place, so be prepared to wait.  Simple, traditional Japanese restaurant.  Impeccable service, fresh fish, and reasonable prices - what's NOT to love?

Finally got to try this place after a year of wanting to when I saw it on yelp for a deal, and the worst part is I did not get the deal and paid full price for the meal.

I got some of the sushi pieces like orange clam, giant clam, toro, and salmon. None of the pieces really stood out to me. I love toro, and I thought that no matter how low quality it is,  it would still be a good piece, but I just did not like it here. It was not fresh and it was flavorless. Now that I think about it, none of the things I ordered were that great to me.

I also got the albacore and tuna tataki, and the fish was not fresh, and the sauce was bit too sour. I had to finish the plate myself because my friend didnt like the dish and I was forcing myself to finish because I dont like to waste food. The chilean bass was the highlight of the dinner. It was soft and the fried onion pieces with the sauce goes well with it, but it didn't wow me. I also got the oyster shooters. It was good but kind of too salty for me to fully enjoy it.

Whenever I would usually eat at a bad sushi place, I would get the feeling that I should never eat sushi again, and Angotei gave me that feeling. The worst part about my meal here is paying almost 100 and not enjoying it at all. Sorry, but I just do not know why this place is so highly rated.

I really don't understand how some of these places have such good reviews. The only conclusion I can come up with, is that the people who eat here haven't had better so don't know any better.

The service was seriously mediocre and the un-fresh flavorless food didn't help either. Not only was it a waste of a meal, but it wasn't exactly cheap either. You would think a half-assed meal would only be "half price"?

There really isn't much to say when nothing was great about the place at all.

I really like the sushi at this place.  Quality is really great, but I knock it down a star because when we ordered omakase, i usually expect the chefs to make something "out-of-the-box."  Everything was kind of the same though.  Sushi: sushi rice, wasabi, the fish, then ginger/scallion/ponzu mix sauce.  Maybe if we became regulars then the chef would get to know us and customize a little more.  But we weren't blown away.  I bought a $50 for $100 from Yelp.  REALLY GOOD DEAL.  We didn't even use it all and got A LOT of food and ice cream.

We'll probably go again some other time, but it'll be difficult because I am sort of set with my fave sushi places in the area.

With my yelp deal in hand $50.00 for $100.00 worth of sushi. Thought we would use it all - NOT!

Wow... Omakase is the way to go.

Could kick my self for not remembering what was on the plate, however everything was delish and fresh!  I will update after I go  back again.

    Had to get:
    Uni
    Saba
    Ikura
Amaebi - had the head fried.

Saw this man and his daughter eating something with a quail egg - had to ask what it was.  Shrimp boat!  OMG!  an explosion of various tastes in my mouth.  on top of the shrimp is a quail egg, tabasco, green onion, masago and ponzu (?).  LOVED it!
My hubby had one and he doesn't normally like raw egg, especially quail egg.  He was pleasantly surprised.
Shrimp boat gone, now onto the  tuna boat, wow... LOVED it as well!

    Ok... Hiro - you rock!

Sake - had to have 2 bottles of sake...
Even bought one for Hiro and the staff!

Did not use all of the $100.00 credit.  Wow, what a bargain. I forget to post prices - I get lost in the food...

    Ambience - 4 Stars - a little small - but cozy
    Food - 6 Stars

With over 250 reviews, I'm sure what everyone else said is true.  My $0.02 is that this place is decent, but not worth the inflated price and the long wait.  Using my 50% off yelp coupon made the price more palatable, but the wait time is just horrendous (over 1.5 hours on a Friday evening).

This sushi restaurant offers good value.

The first time I went was on a Sunday around noon after running the Huntington Beach Half Marathon. The sushi was above average, and we were seated immediately.

The second time was on a Friday evening, and this time the sushi was EXCELLENT. It was FRESH. Waiting time was around 45 minutes before we were seated.

Off the top of my head, there's bar seating, and around 5 tables. There have always been 2 sushi chefs around during dinner time.

They occasionally run out of oysters.

    Some recommendations:

    - Salmon, Tuna, Yellowtail, and Spanish Mackerel sushi
    - Salmon Skin salad
    - Soft Shell Crab House Special Roll: be sure to get the House Special. The regular Cut roll version wasn't as good. The House Special comes with ponzu sauce for dipping.
    -  House Special Sea Bass with Ginger (Suzuki).
    * For a $1 more, you get their spicy version -- a mayonnaise-heavy, thick sauce. It's good, but can feel a bit overwhelming. Perhaps I'll ask for the sauce to be on the side next time.
    * The non-spicy version is in Ponzu/Citrus sauce and was good too.
    - Crunchy Roll
    - Hakutsuru Superior Junmai Ginjo sake

Because the restaurant is a bit small, expecting waiting times of 30-45 minutes. However, with the good value and decent-to-excellent sushi, this is a nice, cozy restaurant to take your date to. Service has always been friendly.

For really good sushi nearby, try Ikko (http://www.yelp.com/bi...), but be prepared to PAY (it's pricey.)

For good Ramen, try Santouka Ramen (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) in the Mitsuwa supermarket food court. It's in the same plaza as Angotei.

This place is small, but quit cozy.
Sashimi special, Unagi, uni, salmon,Halibut, giant clams sushi are really good. Fish is very fresh, fish meat is sweet and juicy. Uni is sweet and big, these chef's are quit generous. Small rice cube and a big  top. Everything is still very original, not too fusion. Love it!
Can't wait to try their fried soft shell crab rolls and tuna/shrimp boat for the next time.
Thank you for a great dinner, we really enjoy ur service, chef Endo.

There wasn't much of a lunch time crowd when I came at around 1 on a Friday afternoon.. Which was great since the entire restaurant has only 4 tables in the entire restaurant in addition to their sushi bar seating.... Only two of the tables can seat four kind of comfortably.. and the other two can seat two comfortably...
The sushi was so irresistible though... Goodness, it made the cramped seating SO worth it. I enjoyed their ango lunch for $20.
The rest of their sushi lunch entrees are around $11-17. (I believe 5-8 different combination choices)
They also offer like 10 different cooked dishes in addition to their Specials written on their chalk board over the sushi bar.
Their sushi was really fresh.. In the Ango combination lunch, it came with Uni, Sweet Shrimp, Salmon Eggs, Toro, Yellowtail, Tomago (2pcs) Clam, Squid, Unagi.. I believe that was it... So so so delicious. Each and every delectable smooth sweet piece.
I can't wait to come back!! I'll most likely come back for lunch... maybe an early weeknight dinner.... I fear their line...
I once waited for almost 2 hours for a Saturday night dinner. NEVER AGAIN!!!

Their parking sucks too. They're situated in a tiny little parking lot next to Mitsuwa..
BEST OF LUCK TO YOU! Many of the spots are designated for a single vendor.. Many spots have signs that say, '7-11 Parking Only' or... 'Dry Cleaner Parking Only' or something....

Very good sushi place in OC.  Can be expensive, but worth it.  Like the Blue Crab hand rolls.  The parking can be bad.  Watch out if you try to park in the back, since that is for the Mitsuwa Marketplace that can be packed with cars.

We got a yelp deal last year and finally used it.. Yum. The sushi was divine - I had like five orders of the salmon sushi. I would have given 5 stars, but the uni was yucky... i was pretty shocked. I don't dare come here during lunch unless i'm there right when it opens, because there's like 4 tables and no parking.

I found this place on Yelp.  I'm always looking for delish Japanese places that have fresh sushi for my BF and other stuff for me (no raw fish eater here!).  This place had great reviews so we couldn't wait to try.  This place is right next to the Mitsuwa Market.  You have to look carefully for it, otherwise you'll pass on by.  We walked it, and boy, it's a small SMALL place.  You step in and you hit the back wall already.  Good thing we didn't have to wait for a table.  But the people that came after certainly had to.  Oops sucks for you! My BF ordered a variety of sushi and hand rolls, he liked them all, said it was all pretty fresh.  I ordered the mushrooms with scallops, pretty tasty, well seasoned, could have been a bit hotter.  The seafood chawamushi, pretty standard and delish.  The blue crab cut roll, it was so small I was so sad.  The crab didn't taste the freshest, and it was a bit stringy.  Not a big fan.  The california roll had two sticks of imitation crab.  UNLIKE.  and a TON of wasabi.  UGH.  all my rolls came with a TON of wasabi.  I don't eat it.  so it pretty much went up my nose and made me gag.  The soft shell crab handroll was ok too.  Was kind of disappointed.  Then I was still hungry so we ordered some sea bass egg rolls.  After 15 minutes passed, we thought they forgot so we asked.  They said it was coming.  Then we asked.  and asked like 5 more times.  It was coming.  At that point I should have said forget it, but I was still hungry and I wanted it.  After 40 minutes, it finally came.  Miniscule egg rolls.  Sad.  But they were pretty darn good.  Crispy, hot, and fresh fish mmmm.  But damn, it took so long.  They apologized at least, but heck, I'm not sure what the hold up was.  MAKE MY FOOD!!!!!!!! don't let it happen again.  But then again, I'm not sure this place was good enough for me to come back to.  I always end up dreaming about my BF and mine's favorite place, Sushi Noguchi.  now THAT's a DELISH place.  can't beat it.

Wow! I have to say that Angotei is one of the best Japanese restaurants that I have ever been to. The sushi and sashimi are so incredibly fresh and flavorful. I do have to say that our our hefty bill may have come hand in hand with the quality of the food.

    Some of my favorites:

    - Sweet shrimp boat
    - Sea bass collar
    - Blue fin toro sashimi

Decent food, but pricey. And that was WITH the Yelp deal. Service is subpar; they could certainly use a refresher course in hospitality. By Japanese standards, they are downright rude. By American standards, though, they are par for the course. The biggest fail: the place is so tiny, not even a Christmas elf would be able to get a table before having to go back to building presents for all the boys and girls. Angotei must translate to "meh" in Nihongo.

I don't think I would have ever tried this place if it wasn't for my sister who got this coupon deal for my family for TET.  I went with one of my brother with his daughter and literally we went over our coupon deal.  It was $50 bucks for $100 dollar meal and we had to pay additional $40.  I think we went overboard on the GIANT CLAM!
We ordered a veggie dish for my niece.  She's only 3 and she loves veggies =]
To our supprise she loved eating the raw scallops. She first pointed that she wanted that so we gave it to her and she kept wanting more of it.  I tried to give her Salmon (which is one of my favorite to eat), she spit it out.
There fish are fresh and I will also recommand their shrimp boat.  They make one of the best shrimp boat.  I tried other place and it wasn't that great.
    My other favorites:
    Sea Urchin
    Oyster Shooters
    anything Sashimi
