Delicious. I love this place. They have a huge vegetarian selection for a non-vegetarian restaurant. Everything I've had is perfect. Well spiced, fresh, perfect balance between subtle and intense.
I especially recommend:
sour soup- I never thought I would love pineapple in soup
the tofu appetizer- tangy, crispy, covered in fried basil and tangy sauce, even carnivores love it
The mock chicken clay pot was good too, but only if you are in the mood for rich curry.
The portions are not huge- if they were this would be a 5-star, but the food is 5-star.
My husband and I went here for the first time the other day - we were prompted by all the great yelp reviews and that it is right down the street from us.
What a find and pleasantly surprised on how nice it is given the busyness of this part of mission. The restaurant is dimly lit and cozy , clean and tastefully decorated, and interesting menu. It was our first time having Cambodian food - similar to Thai which we love - thus we really enjoyed this food as well.
Although we did have to wait sometime before we got our appetizer and main courses, but when we did get our food it was hot, and delicious. The waitress did apologize for the wait - not sure if this is typical or if it was just a busy night. We will certainly go back - the wait will not deter us.
The crepe appetizer is unusual...flavorful. Perfect for sharing. We had the pumpkin Curry and Chile Beef - both were delicious.
My first couple of visits here, I had only gotten lunch take-out. Standard noodle dishes and crepes, which I thought were really good - 4 stars worth. The other night, though, Steven, Cutie Q, and I had dinner in house. It was amazing.
We ordered the spicy hot and sour soup, which hit the spot perfectly on that chilly evening. We also had the ahmohk, which is a curry fish mousse served in banana leaf. It didn't sound that appetizing when I read it on the menu, but it's a popular dish, so we figured we'd try it. It was delicious. I'd order it again for sure. Steven usually likes foods spicier than I do, but we agreed on the spice level of both the dishes. They were so flavorful.
The people here are very accommodating and friendly. They were also wearing what I guessed to be beautiful, traditional Cambodian dress. The space is simple and cozy. Best of all, it's close to home, but I'd venture here even if I moved out of the 'hood, now that I know it exists.
For several years, I lived down in Long Beach, where there is a huge Cambodian population. I NEVER had Cambodian food then. Damn, was I missing out!
My first time, and they were very gentle. Like Thai food, but more spare, so that the individual ingredients stand out more. They deliver, and we'll be calling again soon.
Oh yeah, and they serve the pumpkin curry over the pumpkin, or rather they send the curry separately and you pour it on yourself, ala bread bowl. Instead of like pumpkin chunks in the curry, or something obvious like that.
Outstanding.
I thought this place was truly excellent -- er, outstanding -- yes even for San Francisco. I went for a birthday dinner. I didn't even look at the menu - we ordered family style. Every dish I tasted was delicious -- from the tofu pumpkin with tons of pumpkin, to the mixed seafood plate, to the crepe, it was all good. The atmosphere was cozy, clean, even slightly upscale. But the prices were real good. And they let us bring a birthday cake. I would venture to say that this is a perfect place for a bday.
Fantastic....
in every way. Try the pumpkin curry or a very inexpensive yet satisfying lunch special.
So glad I found this place in the Bargain Bites section of the Chronicle! I love going to family run restaurants, especially when the service is super friendly and genuine :)
Food was fantastic:
+Bamboo shoots salad - super spicy, super good
+Panang curry - yum! Perfect with fluffy white rice
+Pineapple fried rice - great crunch of corn and carrots, flash of curry, and a tad sweet
I will be back very shortly!
Five stars, damn it...
Excellent food, friendly service, and great value for your dollar...
I asked for spicy, and I didn't get some lame Americanized heat. Thanks for serving up the real deal...
3.5 Stars
I had the cold noodle with chicken. I liked the hint of coconut sauce, but the cucumber that came with the dish was a bit bitter.
I really liked their bbq chicken, yum anything with lemongrass makes my taste buds happy.
I enjoyed their fried banana with ice cream. The fried banana had a hint of cinnamon, a really nice touch.
I'd definitely would come back to try their other dishes.
don't know what authentic cambodian is, but i doubt it's like thai or japanese. the waitress recommended a BBQ chicken dish and it tasted exactly like teriyaki chicken that you get at thousands of americanized japanese restaurants. The other dishes were very similar to thai, although blander and less spicy.
The decor is nice and the service is friendly and efficient.
My favorite restaurant in San Francisco! My family and I have been going there since 1987, and the food is consistently excellent. It's a must visit for out of town guests, who universally love it.
The food is similar to Thai food (but less agressively spicy) and Vietnamese food (but with more depth of flavor) with an emphasis on lemongrass, thai basil, mint, fish sauce, peanuts, and chilis.
If you go with a group, definitely try the spinach salad, which is delicious and fun to eat. Other must try appetizers: beef kabobs, chicken salad, cambodian crepe, spicy tofu. The spicy hot and sour soup is amazing, the green curry is deceptively mild at first, but packs a powerful cumulative heat punch, and the ahmohk (fish mousse) is a little taste of heaven in a banana leaf.
The service is warm and welcoming, and the price is right. Try it, you will love it!
Finally! I've had some Cambodian friends in the past and have always wanted to try their food. Thanks to yelp for helping me find this place.
I came here for late lunch on Saturday with my mom. She likes trying new places as much as I do so she was pretty excited.
Upon entrance, it's a cool date spot with the reddish walls, clean and modern simple style (reminds me of Burma SS). They had some Jason Mraz playing in the background.
The warm and welcoming service from the waitress/hostess (she may have been the owner) is the second thing you'll notice. She treated us like family members, which is funny because when we first stepped in she told us she thought we were Cambodian. We then told her we thought she was Filipino. Asians all look the same!
Their menu is extensive and has something for everyone. You'll find a bunch of soups, beef, pork, chicken, seafood, noodle and vegetarian dishes.
We both went with the lunch combo $6.50 and you get to pick from two different items. http://static4.px.yelp... it also comes with rice and house special soup. http://static1.px.yelp... The soup was refreshing with ginger, cilantro, and coconut flavors.
I recommend getting the ginger beef http://static3.px.yelp... as it had a unique subtle fish sauce flavor broth and the vegetables tasted very fresh and snappy.
Wash everything down with fresh coconut juice from a fresh coconut to complete your unique and exotic culinary experience. http://static3.px.yelp...
This was my second time at this restaurant and my third time sampling cambodian food. It reminds me of Thai but for me, it's not as tasty. Maybe its because I'm not used to it but everything to me was good but not great. There are however a few things that I've never seen before. We had a couple appetizers that were pretty unique. The cold noodles and the crepe. The fish mousse entree weirded me out but apparently its a local favorite. The owner is superrrr sweet and she will help you decide what to try. The place is clean and inviting and if you're up for some new cuisine, try it out.
Tip: Papaya salad was my favorite dish hands down.
I love this place. As a cambo girl, I appreciate the authenticity. At the same time, the food can still appeal to a foreigner's palate. Trust me, it'll be different but GOOD. I love that it's a mom and pop shop because it makes the dining experience more personal and intimate. The service is so friendly and warm and they are always open to make a suggestion. I think my fave dish is the crispy rice chips but really, everything is delicious. Glad that the only cambo restaurant in SF is a great one :)
This was my first time eating Cambodian food, and I have to say, I wasn't all that impressed. We ordered a bunch of the tofu dishes, and to be honest, they all tasted pretty much the same. My favorite had to be the vegetable curry and spring rolls, but really, I wouldn't write home about any of it.
To their credit everything tasted clean and fresh, but just uniformly the same. Yeah, I know Thai Basil has a distinct taste, but that's all anything tasted like. So if you like Thai basil, this place is for you.
Not only it being the only Cambodian restaurant in San Francisco, but being true to what home cooked Cambodian food is -- it's definitely worth 5 stars.
Angkor Borei offers 2 very palatable authentic Cambodian dishes, the PRAHOK and AHMOK. Try them.
Being very familiar to what types of food are served in a Cambodian household, Angkor Borei is spot on.
Many people have asked me what Cambodian food is like and that question has stumped me many times because I'm not sure how to describe it without having it compared to other more familiar cuisines that we have many locations to choose from within the city... "it's similar to Thai but not as sweet or peanut buttery, kind of like Vietnamese but not too much fish sauce."
And Cambodia being bordered by those 2 countries, you will see an overlap of familiar Thai and Vietnamese dishes at Angkor Borei, but the flavoring is different.
Of course, they have left out a lot of authentic stews, soups and dipping sauces that are distinctly Cambodian from the menu BUT for a very good reason-- most of those dishes would require an acquired taste and a lot of time to appreciate.
So you think you're getting items on the menu that you think is an imitation of a Thai or Vietnamese dish, but you're wrong.
This was the first time I had Cambodian Food and it was good and bad...I went here for dinner.
Pro's: Nice little gem in the mission. Ambiance is nice and warm with brick color walls and mahagony interior it seems...Food was all about $8-$12.
THier Red Curry Fillet is AWESOME GOOD! and their COLD noodles is very tasty (I pour the whole sauce in there)
Cons: The food was small to OK portions. Everything was a la carte BUT the food portions are good for 2-3 ppl MAX...One appetizer will NOT be able to split btw 4 -5 ppl... Parking can be dificult and the bamboo shoots are way to spicy unless yo let them know ahead of time to make it mild.
Not all the food here is great...You really have to know what to order to get the full tasty experience....
Order: Red Curry FIsh, Cold Noodles and sticky rice dessert
DO NOT ORDER...the spicy bamboo shoots, the chicken with green beans and bell pepper or the shrimp in claypot with lemon grass....
That's all folks...
Goodnight
UGHs. this is the second time that i tried this place in the past 6 months and i am not impressed at all. i vaguely remember coming here about 4 years ago and enjoying the food, but that was a while ago.
one star: edible enough, but you're eating it just because you have to pay for it.
two stars: service is friendly but slow. the waitress filled our water glasses at the beginning of the meal, and it took a half hour to notice our empty glasses at the edge of the table.
first time, we had the sour soup which i actually enjoy. the cambodian crepe is also good, but nothing like what my mom makes. the worst was the sauteed pork which was mostly bell peppers and onions.
second time, again the sour soup because i craved it that night for some reason. had the ground pork stew which came with raw vegetables (raw eggplant on the platter? what??) we also had the pan friend fish fillet with bean thread noodle. the fish was bland and there wasn't enough sauce to give the fish any flavor. $40.00 for the meal including tax and tip.
overall, i was disappointed both times, not WOWed. i really want to like this place and i feel that i may be ordering the wrong dishes. but really, trying 5 different dishes and not really liking of them says a whole lot. oh we were the only asian people in the restaurant both times we went, do you think that says something?
i don't think i'll be coming back here again.
Hm mm!
Wow! What a gem!
It's quite rare for me to make my way to far up Mission but last night we finally made it there. The restaurant is pretty without being overdone. I appreciate the attention to details on each table.
A love the mix of sweet & savory. The Pineapple shrimp curry was delicious. The stuffed crepe is simply amazing. Simple but so flavorful. My favorite is the pan fried fish with clear noodle & vegetable on top. The rice is perfect.
It seemed to me this is a family business. Service was great and friendly.
To top it all off... it's is so affordable.
I can't say enough good things about Angkor Borei. The food is wonderful--clean, crisp tastes. The spicy dishes are actually spicy, with wonderful notes of fresh chillies and veggies. The meat is cooked perfectly, and everything is well seasoned. And as my cholesterol has been high (which I feel I should be constitutionally entitled not to worry about if I am younger than 30), I have been eating a lot of their fake chicken of late. It is great--it is firm and tasty, a perfect meat replacement.
I would be remiss if I didn't also mention the pumpkin curry, which is sublime! Also, the service was efficient and friendly when we dined in. Their delivery is also reliable and fast, and they are always easy to deal with on the phone. They have been a stand-by for us on many a night when we are too tired to cook for ourselves.
Cambodian is a mix between Burmese and Thai. We had the cold noodles, the spinach leaves and the pumpkin curry. The spinach leave was my favorite. There are like 13 different ingredients that you put in a spinach leaf. It was fresh and tasty. The cold noodles were good but didn't have a strong flavor. The pumpkin curry was very good...You actually get a whole pumpkin with it. It was creamy delicious and filling.
Wow.
Fresh and plentiful.
Affordable.
Super satisfying.
We had a spectacular meal.
And flaming hot!
We requested it and that's exactly what we got.
We were both glistening and endorphin rushed.
Lip numbingly spicy but still able to taste all the delicate nuances of the vegetables.
The meats were perfectly cooked. Nothing spongy or squishy.
Vegetables were bright and had wonderful barely cooked snap.
Bliss.

Efficient table service.
Pleasant dining room.
Very small/intimate - I counted 13 tables in all. Four 4 tops and the rest 2 tops.
I am so glad this is in my neighborhood.
YAY, I am a fan, the staff is super friendly, the food was good, the prices fair. But can I be honest? Having just come back from Cambodia, the menu had few truly Cambodian dishes. It has a severe lean towards Thai and Chinese cuisine. They do have Amok and Lahong. And those dishes we had were delicious. The Sour Soup is awesome.
All that said though, the rest of the menu really was pretty standard asian fare.., cashew nut chicken, basil chicken, sweet and sour pork, etc etc. The beer selection is also decidedly Thai and Chinese - the only Angkor they serve is Anchor steam.
I know what you are thinking, it's all very close to the same region, and that is true. But I was looking for something to take me back to Cambodia and it just didn't completely deliver. Cambodian cuisine is largely fusion of vietnamese, burmese and indian, and I felt like I was in a Thai restaurant with a couple Cambodian dishes available to sample. I'd love to see the friendly owners and capable chef's take some risks here and and add a few more exciting options.
I thought it was good but not amazing, It really deserves 3.5 stars, it just didn't blow me away. I'd would give it a fourth star only because I am grateful that there is at least one Khmer restaurant in SF and I'd love for them to be successful.
I used to eat here regularly when they first opened in the late 80s. Maybe it is just nostalgia, but the food was much better then than it is now.
We ordered the pork noodles and grilled chicken for lunch. The noodles were dry (little or no liquid) and rather bland. They were served with small bits of pork, some plain shaved cabbage and a bit of ground peanut. They lacked the interesting and complex (sweet, spicy, savory) flavor that I was expecting. The grilled chicken was served with a small undressed green salad, with white rice and a dollop of sweet, spicy sauce. Both dishes were very plain, were relatively small portions, and lacked good flavor.
The service was fast and friendly, but the the food sadly, and therefore the overall experience, was a disappointment...
We came here because BFF wanted to reunite with her friends. I wasn't particularly hungry so I shared the Pan Fried Fish Fillet with Garlic Fish Sauce. It was okay, but not really my thing. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food though. The hostess was also attentive and very kind.
Had the spinach leaves to start, followed by the ginger chicken. The spinach leaves were excellent and the chicken also very good. Service was good, and reasonably fast. Love it! I'll be going back!!
I know I may be such a 5 star whore that no one will take my 5 stars seriously, but I'd really like to give credit when credit is due, even when it's something as simple as Spinach Leaves to tip the scales towards 5.
After a raucous start to the year I'm settling into the nice easy lazy days that some higher being is offering to me currently as an apology for a cruel January.
I go to yoga, I nap in the middle of the day, I enable the quiet slacker evenings in.
Life is good.
Life is better when you can't stop stuffing yourself silly with spinach leaves stuffed with hunks of ginger, lime, toasted coconut and peanuts (green peppers and red onions were avoided due to my body's ability to transform into a human beatbox upon consumption of such things).
Dipped in tamarind sauce. Everything is better dipped in tamarind.
ps. veggie noodle soup w/ mock chicken A-, more cilantro please. :)
One of my favorite restaurants EVER!
Some of the thrills. . .
a beautiful inside tucked away near the corner of Mission and Cortland behind an unassuming storefront
a vegetarian menu!
delicious, complex flavors, rich but not too rich, delicate almost, not oily, each bite was worth savoring
delicious tea
clean, sparkling clean restaurant with decent prices and cloth napkins
and oh so kind and lovely owners. . .
only con, not the best parking ever.
I can't wait to go there again!!
Dinner here was a delicious foray into Cambodian, my first here in the City. The interior is ruddy and welcoming. The staff was delightful, very eager to offer recommendations and we quickly made friends with them (it didn't hurt that someone in our party spoke Cambodian). Now onto the good stuff!
Crispy tofu - Delicious! Pungent with a slightly sticky sauce that compliments the texture of the tofu.
Beef salad - Tad spicy but surprising mix of flavors, hot/cold soft/crispy. I appreciated the balance.
Cambodian crepe - Crepe was thick, nutty and soft. A bit hard to share.
Ahmok - Curry fish mousse, say whaa!? Presentation is artful. Taste not as hard-hitting as I would've liked but still really good.
Sour beef soup - Recommended proudly by the waitress as being typical Cambodian. Good coupled with rice
Other tidbits:
They were out of dessert (or rather, mango) when asked, but offered sticky rice + ice cream as an alternative.
Portion sizes are rather small in general. 5 dishes for 5 hearty eaters will not likely cut it, although it seemed ample initially.
Inconvenient location (for us Sunset-ers, at least).
The verdict? It's great for treating your palate to something new, but it's a hard pick if value's your main concern. I say, what the hay, you're worth it.
Upon coming in, the decor was very nice. Perhaps a little too dark though. After sitting down, I did not expect prices to be this low for a place like that but it was made up by the portions as they were smaller, making it overall resonable.
Its Cambodian food, so its a good change of pace from your regular Thai food. It's somewhat authentic as they had the vegetable dip with fermented anchovies.
I was hoping for somehing MORE authentic as I've been to some "HOLE in the WALLS" down south that were AWESOME. I ofcourse bring my Cambodian girlfriend with me!
I'd recommend it if asked about it, but not exactly somewhere I'd RAVE about as I like to put a bit more weight on food than just the decor.
Overall, I had a good time... not GGGRREEEEAAATTT but good
I remember the first time I went here...
I was with a group. Some of my friends were talking a great deal about how lovely (or hot/do-able) the women dressed in intricate traditional Cambodian garments in the paintings on the walls were... ha. Well, I've been back there several times, and those paintings have been replaced... And even though the conversation that night was very -ehh- random, I do remember that the food was very flavorful, nicely spiced, and just yummy! and that the prices were also very nice.
The people that work here are super friendly and always very accommodating. They are very vegan friendly -- they have a large vegetarian section toward the back of the menu which I'm sure is mostly vegan. So if you're unsure about a dish having egg in it (because they rarely if at all have dairy in their food), just ask...
I don't remember what the dish is called exactly, but it had cashews and tofu in it... Whatever it's called, that sauce is amazing!!! Just pour some of that on top of some rice, and yum... Mmm-mmm good!
Apparently, this place has been here for quite a long time... And seeing as how it's always good, I'm sure it'll still be here for a long time.
In high school, one of my best friends was Cambodian. Her mom was a great cook. After school, she offered me some squid salad, and I never forgot that day.
Years later, while reminiscing, I yelped for a Cambodian restaurant, and found this one. Set out on a mission to the Mission to relive that after-school afternoon. We arrived at an odd time, and had to wait 30mins for dinner service. Hungry and determined, I patiently waited at a cafe across the street.
When we got in, the place was quiet, clean and cozy. The server was sweet. We ordered the squid salad, cashew chicken, and baked prawns. Tender, pungent, salty, spicy, fresh..the squid salad took my taste buds back in time. Cashew chicken was tasty, and the prawns came out in a foil swan. Nice touch.
Would definitely recommend this resto for couples, or good friends that want to hideaway for flavorful food and intimate conversation.
See C.L.'s review below because we ate here together. I really liked the perfect level of spice in the dishes and the nice service. I've had Cambodian before in Oakland and in Cambodia, but nothing really memorable. Well, to be fair, in my first visit to Cambodia, I got really sick so I couldn't really remember , and in my second visit, I was in a tour bus with Thai people and we ate at a THAI restaurant and buffet places in Siem Reap! Sad, yeah. It was a free trip for me though.
So, anyway, finding parking near Angkor Borei sucks. I'll be here next time, but I'll take the 49.
I love this place!! i have been coming here with my parents since i was a little kid, and the owner is always so excited and welcoming to see me when i come in. food is great, and the price is even better!!. I suggest coming in for lunch time. they have a great lunch special menu thats cheap and gives you plenty of food! if you want some good food, and friendly service this is the place to go!!
Absolutely the finest dining experience. The couple who owns Angkor borei attend to every detail, from accomidating a table of 16 on a Saturday night with one day's notice to executing every course perfectly. The Spinach Leaf appetizer and coconut iced cream with fried bananas could be served at any restaurant in the city, and the fact the same folks are responsible for each course is amazing. I can't recommend Angkor Borei more highly. Of course, as some posters noted, if you aren't a fan of Cambodian food you won't enjoy Angkor Borei, but it seems unreasonable to fault a Cambodian restaurant for serving Cambodian food...
Well I am not sure I know much about Khmer food but I had a bunch while I was visiting Campuchia.
I had the pleasure of dining here with a few vagabonds, Shin, Aki-chan and Simon-san. We decided to go all Khmer with a hint of Vietnam on the side.
7. Fresh Spinach Leaves
5. Nhoam Lahong (similar to Som Tum)
5. Crispy Crepe (Ban Xeo) - Veg Menu
17. Spicy Green - with Beef
Spicy Mixed Seafood Khmer dish, name evades me, which was meh!
We ordered all local dishes and ate with our hands, just like they do over there with leaves and Fish sauce.
We were in a large group of 20 people and the restaurant was packed. The food was ok in terms of taste when compared to what one can get in Phnom Penh.
+s
They accommodated 20 of us.
They let us have separate bills, 4 of us went in on one bill.
bought out extra leaves for our appetizers.
the service was a tad bit slow but it was a house full and they served with a smile and showed good hospitality.
-s
he assumed we don't need chop sticks.
Recommend: Yes, must try at least once.
Romantic: Yes, I believe it is a great date spot or to decompress after a visit to Angkor Wat.
Will I go back: Yes but after I check out the competition.
Dessert: Did not have any. N/A
The food was incredible and flavorful. I ordered the spicy green curry with tofu, vegetarian crispy rolls, and steamed rice for take-out. It was ready when I arrived, and the people were the nicest! One gentleman in particular greeted me with a huge smile on his face that made me feel very happy and at home. The rolls had the perfect flavor and crispness, and the sauce to go with it was good. I loved the complexity of flavors in the curry, and the spicyness and amount of liquid was perfect!!
The only drawback was... there was a HOLE in the bottom of the friggen plastic container holding the curry. So it leaked half of my beautiful precious curry all over the inside of my bag. T_T It took me until I was halfway home (waiting for the 29) to pinpoint the source of the leak. FAWWWWKKKKK!!!! Oh well, at least the plastic bag didn't break, though the paper one inside it sopped up most of the curry anyway. I still managed to enjoy it, albeit messily.
Although I love Thai and Vietnamese, this was my first experience with Cambodian food. We loved this restaurant. Four of us went for dinner last night and ate family style. Everything we had was great. I totally disagree with another reviewer that all the food "tastes the same." Our dishes were all unique and all delicious. We had the spinach leaf appetizer which I recommend everyone start with. It is bursting with such an array of flavors. Then we shared Panang Beef, Shrimp claypot, spicy chicken, and lemongrass tofu (new on the menu). Service was great and our waitress was funny and charming. And no one tried to kick us out as we sat there as the only remaining customers, having paid our bill an hour earlier, and all the staff well ready to leave. And how excited am I to see that they deliver?! Will be using that service frequently!
One of our favourites. Parking not bad and worth it. Charming and somewhat quiet. Inexplicably uncrowded. It is one of our celebration/date night spots.
Recently updated decor elegant. Mom and Pop very charming.
Every dish is delicious. Love the fish mousse (not a mousse texture had chunks of tasty fish wrapped in banana leaf). All the fish dishes are excellent.
Papaya salad nice. Spinach leaf appetizer a must-have.
Sticky black rice, mango sesame seed a nice finish.
Love it, love it, love it.
2 thumbs way up!
my first experience eating cambodian and i LOVED it.
i came here last week for a friend's bday celebration and they accomodated a group of 14 of us.
i wanted to order something unique so i decided to order from the specials menu- pumpkin chicken curry. my dish basically consisted of 1/2 of a pumpkin with a spicy chicken curry served inside of it. i love spicy food so this was heaven. the pumpkin was delish as well. i basically would scoop some out and eat along w/ the rice. Y-U-M-M-Y.
service was great but the timing of the dishes were off... i guess when having a party of 14 you can't please everyone! i'm definitely letting that small detail go though b/c i plan on coming back :-)
