Review from Lili K.
Came here for a social event and it is a small venue, but I can see some appeal to it. The bartender was friendly, and the drinks were strong. Of course, this was a random night of free drinks, so it's probably different on regular days. This is probably just a local spot to pregame before heading elsewhere. Btw, I don't see how you could dance much in here, being that there's such a tiny floor for it.

Just randomly stumbled into here this past Saturday and it was pretty empty, super dark.. red... and dark..
When you walk in, I don't think there's a coat check but there IS a coat RACK to hang your coat. I of course wouldn't trust it because anyone could just take your stuff and I'm not about that stolen-coat-on-a-winter's-night kinda life.
There's seating around the room which was plentiful only because it was pretty dead with less than 30 people there. The crowd in was a mix of college boys, wannabe rock artists, and wannabe scene girls. The music definitely did not match the crowd which definitely threw me off and didn't make it anymore fun.
Not too sure how much drinks were since someone had purchased mine for me, but I'm sure it's the NY usual.
I definitely wouldn't go back.. the vibe was just so weird in here. -

Not my scene. Not sure it's really anyone's scene.
Combination of hipster, young frat boys/college girls, harder-core musicians...
Nothing special. Drinks ok. Prices ok. Bathrooms ok. Eh. I won't be coming back. -

When I was too young to drink it was like my dream to come to this place and get hammered. Once I was old enough to drink I realized that this place was actually lame unless you have a huge crew of band guys in that night...and I'd rather get hammered at Le Souk down the street. Decor is pretty cool but I can't stand the 80's 90's music...like if I wanted to hear that I'd be turning into some LiteFM station in the car, not listening to a DJ. But hey I guess that still qualifies as hipster so I dunno. There usually playing a movie on the wall, but if you're watching the damn movie I think you're missing the point.

I was here once after a really, really, late night out and it was just super crowded, as others have said. It's not the type of place I'd start my night off with, but it's perfect for that later, buzzed spot you want a nightcap at, without being hounded by creeps, since they avoid you at all costs. :)

Review from Campbell K.

So this bar is an example of "when Yelp gets it just right". What I garnered from this bar's reviews was that it is:
a.) Owned by Pete Wentz of Fallout Boy, and his lovely bride Ashlee Simpson - two human beings I would gladly gutpunch.
and
b.) Entirely populated by the skinny jeans, tight v-neck, leather jacket crowd.
Sure enough, I was strolling by this bar one night with two particularly sake-bombed female friends of mine, and in their drunken minds, the aforementioned points (a) and (b) sounded pretty excellent. We go in, and (surprise, surprise), every single person was wearing a v-neck that was cut far too low, medically constrictive jeans, and a trendy leather jacket - topped off by about half wearing sunglasses (yes, in a dimly lit bar). Nostra Yelpmus.
We had a bit of looking-down-our-nose fun with the little Fallout boys and girls that meandered silently and awkwardly around the place, and eventually left, feeling reassured in the predictive power of Yelp.Listed in: Campbell's Index de Bars

Dim loungy space with small dance floor area. Does have a DJ that plays a mix of music (the saturday I went it was mainly hiphop). Good for groups.

4 stars for sundays
2/3 stars for all other times
as of this year, a&k has become a steelers bar, and an awesome steelers bar at that. i really worry that too many fans will find out and it will turn into the next reservoir, but for now, its a great crowd and a fun place to watch the games.
other times.. the crowd is a little off, but the space itself is okay, and they have a good beer selection.Listed in: East Village

This place is so lame. So very lame. I'm not wild about most celebrity endorsed things but I appreciate good quality when I see it. Angels & Kings just seemed not only not worth the trip from Murray Hill (haha) but almost kind of cheesy.

I'm not a bar type of guy. You won't really catch me in any bars unless it's a bday party or I have no choice.
So, last night I found myself in here because I helped promote my brother's latest comedy show (look up Alex Carabano / MakeFunNotWar on YouTube).
It's nicer looking than many bars in that area, but the bike randomly above the doorway was weird.
Also (and this is something bouncer hated, too), the entrance opens to a dangerous step down AND there's a vent that sticks out of the ground right at crotch height.
Apparently, the vent belongs to the building next door. The fuckers could have put something more practically, but noooo they wanted to be dicks.
By the way, I only gave three stars because of the following:
- It's a bar
- The drink I ordered was crazy expensive for this area ($12 for patron on the rocks)
- The weird vent thing -

"Holy Regicide, Batman!"
I don't know what it was about last night and shitty bars, but we seemed to find quite a few! It's was like an Easter egg hunt, but instead of finding colorful plastic eggs with chocolate and $100 bills inside, we found cesspools of social degenerates and bouncers that thought way too highly of themselves. Cue "Knocked Up" scene:
"You're a doorman, doorman! Doorman! DOORMAN!"
We were having quite a good time inside, although it took us a little while to flag down the bartenders who seemed to have a knack for vanishing for minutes at a time. Prices were average for NYC, I guess. Wasn't really paying attention.
They don't have a wide arrange of liquor, or, as my friend said, "They don't have anything worth paying for." I don't believe they had any beer on tap, either. I always think it's a little weird when a bar has zero beers on tap, but they had plenty of bottles so I guess it evens out.
The music is oldies, which I loved. We were dancing and singing the night away when the doorman came over to us with a smug look on his face and told us we had to leave. Wha...? The area we were standing in was supposedly reserved. Really...? It's a corner of the bar. No table. No... anything, really. Just a corner. "Who is it reserved for?" I asked, mainly because I was wondering if it was just reserved, or if people were there who needed the space at the very moment. "Not for you," was the reply. Cue scene from "Knocked Up."
I guess it's too much to ask for some courtesy after you've dropped $200. The bar itself might be okay, but the staff make me want to get up on my high horse and give a speech about respect and humility.
It's fine to do you're job. It's okay to ask us to leave an area because it's reserved, but next time you do take that gigantic stick out of your ass - you accidently whacked me with it when you turned back around to take up your place as New York City's finest doorman.Listed in: Britton's Bar Bible, Places I Like... Review from Sasha d.
New York, NY
Let me first mention that this review goes out to all the lady-Yelpers of New York.
I guess I have to mention Pete Wentz is involved with this establishment, and that's why I wanted to go to Angels and Kings originally, because it seemed like some major lolz were in store for me on an otherwise uneventful Tuesday night.
How wrong I was.
What was in store for me was not lolz, but--and I do not exaggerate--the most attractive collection of straight dudes I've ever encountered in a New York bar. I'm talking percentage-wise, because the place wasn't packed, which was nice actually, no bumpy-drink-spilly action, room to sit, etc. But whatever, who cares about sitting down, when you need to look flirtatiously at like, two thirds of the patrons of the bar, because you can't decide which one you like best? I felt like a boy-crazy kid in a candy store where instead of candy they had guys, and instead of selling them, they gave them away for free! Even the bartenders, who might give you free drinks, or Ricardo, the barback, who will adorably dance with you whenever he makes rounds to pick up glasses?
I suggest going on Tuesday. The "party" is great. I guess calling it a party isn't fair, since there aren't usually enough people to constitute a party. But the DJ plays the PERFECT mix of top 40 hip hop, classic pop and indie stuff.
Sometimes weird stuff goes on here though. MTV was filming something once when I was there, and by that I mean shining a blinding light on everything and tripping people on chords. And I've heard tell of emo-celebrities showing up for beer or whatever, but i'll believe it when I see it.
My only problem is $6 drinks. Hello, starving student over here! Luckily, the environs are conducive to the generosity of others, so hopefully you won't be shouldering the cost of your buzz all alone. -

There is only one reason to come to this bar and that's to see if you can spot Ashlee Simpson shooting up in the bathroom. Otherwise, this bar is a dud with a poor atmosphere, a tool of an owner (Pete Wentz) and with a large enough dance floor without any dancing.
If you enjoy wasting time, come here. -

Ok, before you read any further, keep a few things in mind:
A) i'm on the border of being in love with pete wentz. correction: definitely have crossed the line of being in love with him. the line is a dot to me.
B) i love fueled by ramen/decaydance.
C) i like going anywhere emo-type band guys are involved (which at a&k is at least once a week).
D) if you are judging and making a face right now, get the f out of my review.
So, if you still have any respect for this review, read on, yelpalicious reader.
I love angels & kings for a few reasons. One is that I hate going to bars where you have to wait in line and have to get bottle service and all that stupid crap. angels & kings has the friendliest staff, to the pitiful point that I've hung out there just with the bartenders, bouncer and the owner and had a fantastic time. it's not a dance club type of bar, but you can sit around the "dance floor," drink beers watch people trying to dance. very amusing. the bday parties they have there are usually fun for people watching, there are so many different types of people that stumble in. sometimes its a grand entrance with cameras flashing (read: travis from gch, pete, panic!, etc), and sometimes its just a random group of interestingly weird people. either way, i always find myself having oddly insightful conversations.
the gong thing is funny. it seems to me that anyone can just go bang the gong, and everyone gets free shots. not sure if its always like that, but give it a try.
either way, i like going here. its cool to mingle with people who write/sing music i like. and nobody acts pretentious, everyone just hangs out and has fun. i thoroughly enjoy myself each time i go. take this, hatersssssss :)Listed in: Bars that don't suck

Came by on a Tuesday night, so it probably was not as crowded, with Natasha L. The people inside were kind of strange, like the guys I was talking to, who kept conferencing on the appropriate way to respond to me. I could hear you, geniuses. Next time try having a game plan BEFORE you get tot the bar, k?

WALL STREET, NY
It's important to look at this bar for what it is and not what it once was. It has a standard drink selection with standard prices and a very loud juke box with standard hits. The decor is interesting and somewhat unusual with deep reds and comfy couches.
This place's value (and rating) plummets when you factor is the crowd. It is crawling with "hipper-than-thou" folks who's idea of fun is dancing obnoxiously and demanding all of the attention with obviously intentional "drunkin" antics. There is also a strong showing of B&T types with popped collars and tight polos clearly interested in being in the Fall Out Boy guy's bar.
Skip it, you'll be better off. -
Review from Liza M.
Sunnyside, NY
Being here for an event I'm sure does not give you an idea of how the place normally functions, but I have to say that when I walked in I was surprised. It did not look like one of those 'this is owned by a celebrity' places. It looks like a semi-normal East Village bar with minimal seating and forgettable decor.
Until you start to suspect that the bathroom graffiti is actually planned out by the owners, you notice that there are not one but two bouncers (at 8PM on a Thursday when the place is empty) and there is a 'coat check' which is composed of a small man hemmed in to a 3' x 3' area with velvet ropes. Ugh.
I enjoyed the film that was being screened there that night but I won't be back for a night of drinks - the beer selection was laughable and the cocktail list dismal. And maybe it's just me, but I think that having bottle service as an option on your menu is enough to make me not want to be at your bar. -

Went here with my roommate because we heard it was Pete Wentz's bar and thought we'd be able to go and make fun of emo kids with fake IDs. The crowd couldn't have been more different -- this place was full of yuppies! Not that there's anything wrong with 30somethings in Original Penguin shirts, but it certainly wasn't what we expected.
As my roommate put it, "Clearly the crowd here is the demographic that reads food blogs and heard that it was Pete Wentz's bar." -

Crap, am I jealous of Sasha D!! Where were all those cute straight boys when *I* went?? Of course, the bday boy was cute but not straight, so that might explain the particular demographic mix on Saturday night. Right. Note to self: stop hanging out with gay men to pick up straight men.
Anyway, they don't serve any beers on tap. Too much red lighting. I felt like I was in hell. Or some seedy brothel in Bangkok. And neither of those places seem likely to feature angels. Maybe kings though. Kings like whores. I watch the Tudors! Okay no I don't. I like the old Jonathan Rhys Meyers, from Velvet Goldmine. Bring HIM back! This new one is too buff and a bit of an asshole. -
Review from Jess K.
True story: I wanted to go to The Orchid Lounge with my friends but now it's this place. They don't use the gong to give out free shots or display weird old Chinese movies on the wall. So basically it's the same bar but without the cool ambience and filled with hipsters. We stayed for half the night but got bored staring at the people in this bar. Nothing stood out and our goal was to show friends visiting from London a good time.
It wasn't until a few days later that I found out this bar is owned by Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy. Does that band even exist anymore? Anyway. I guess it made it slightly cooler but still. Bring back the gong! -
Review from Zach M.
New York, NY
Jenny had been begging and pleading for me to go to Angels and Kings since I moved to NYC in July. Last night, she took me there for the first time.
Let me say a few things first: I don't hate emo kids, but I have my reservations hanging out in large groups of them while drinking. Jenny and I were joking on the way over about how they probably hand out tissues for all the crying that takes place, or have "you can see my balls more clearly through my tight jeans than yours!" competitions.
This, however, did not turn out to be the case. A DJ spinning 90's hip hop and R&B, and he actually takes requests?!? Nice touch for a Pete "Sugar, We're Going Down" Wentz bar! They were also playing "At Close Range," the amazingly awesome Christopher Walken/Sean Penn movie, against one of the brick walls. That was like, the first R Rated movie my mom let me watch! The bar is lit in red lighting, giving it a burlesque feel, which is only enhanced by the plush antique leather couches that run along the perimeter of the room. The bartenders are friendly, fast and helpful.
A few down sides: there always seemed to be a huge line of people for the bathrooms, of which there are only two unisex single service stall rooms. Luckily I have the bladder of an ox and was able to hold it, but others are not as lucky. They charge $4 for PBR (don't force people to overpay for piss), $5 for bottles of bud. I'm a firm believer that all bars should have at least one tap line running, and these guys don't.
One surprise of the night (and someone else caught on to this in another review) is that a Thursday night in this place will have you swimming in estrogen. Seriously, the guy:girl ratio was something like 1:4. And the girls weren't even emoed out!
I will undoubtedly be coming back to this bar, not because it is particularly amazing or deserving of my hard earned cash, but because Jenny will definitely be jonesing for Pete Wentz and will want to go. At least after last night, I know I'll have a decent time. -

A room with a bar, no personality, and some benches.
Well, I guess its not entirely bad; it sure isnt Gross. . but what IS it?
I came here several time and they were filming the Real World. . .
The last thing I need in my life is getting caught on some bullshit, has-been reality show that is long overdue for cancellation.
This place is apparently owned by the singer of Fall Out Boy and on the right night. . .IF you're lucky, he'll be there.
Gee, someone inform Gawker Stalker. -
Review from Jamie M.
My friend and I went here for her 21st b-day back in February. (Forgive me since this review is way late!)
I had never been here before, but she had bought into all the fame (Apparently the Real World had been there or something?) and insisted that's where she wanted to celebrate her b-day. Fine, you're the b-day girl; you can call the shots.
I don't think we paid a cover charge; something about over 21 not having to pay? Anyway, the coat check was a roped off section by the door with a make-shift 2-level rack hanging from the ceiling. A little odd, but okay.
The overall ambiance of the room was cool, especially with all the stuff above the bar. There was even a silent movie/film screening on the wall in the corner.
I personally did not drink anything here, plus I thought the music selection was all over the place. A few older songs I do remember dancing to with David Carl, our gay man in residence (who has since moved back to Texas, sad face). All the guys we met that night thought he and I came together and thank god for that, since the crowd was definitely very touristy that night.
I personally remember wanting to leave within an hour of being there, though we ended up staying for close to 3 since my friend Stef wanted to hang out.
Chances are I wouldn't visit again though; it was all reality show hype when in reality there was nothing to show.Listed in: Girl's Night Out, Hitting up NYC VIP style

Review from Sean S.
There is a gong behind the bar, and apparently they use it to celebrate little things, like a big tip, or a really bad tip, or when the clock strikes closing time, or whenever they feel like it. But we couldn't get them to bang it.
I've met friends here before, but never really stopped in. This time I did for a bit. It's kinda a generic east village bar, but seems to get a good mix of people. Spacious couches on one side, bar on the other. Dark and cozy, but probably a bit loud and rambunctious for a date spot... -

New York, NY
Um. Not much going on here. I think I was here on a Friday night or so but yeah... Not a great crowd at all, it was pretty sparse. The music, as others have noted, was very sporadic in choice - it's like it was trying to be dance-y with little to moderate success but then the bottom would just inexplicably fall out and you were left standing there, dumbfounded.
It's kind of a shame because I think it's a nicely set up place and everything, but for whatever reason, it's one of those places that just doesn't work. It's like the nightlife equivalent of that friend of yours who's sweet and nice and who everybody thinks you should be totally crazy about, but you're just not into. The chemistry just isn't there because they have one or two glaring dealbreaker qualities.
Meh. I'll give it another go one of these days. -

There was some NYU young producers event when I came here, with a lot of very young college kids drunkenly dancing around. And then after they left, there seemed to be quite a few thirtysomething doucebags around leering at my friends and I...and a few who picked up on us with the WORST lines. Ugh.
But...they had PBR, and the bartender was rad...and I liked the overall decor. I would give it another shot. Oh, and the DJ was playing the best mix of mid-90s rock...I got totally nostalgic on all that Weezer, Bad Religion, and Smashing Pumpkins. -
Review from Jyoti H.
Went on a Thursday night for bender drinks (the start of a bender). It was pretty dead at around 11pm, but thats fine because lately I'm tired of bars that are filled to capacity where people are spilling drinks on you.
It's not a date spot, but more of a friends night out "well we are in the EV and want to bar hop so let's stop in a for a drink on our way to somewhere else" type bar.
I wouldn't specifically go back, but I wouldn't not go back again either.
The beer selection was pretty extensive, but I got a lemonade flavor drink instead. -

New York, NY
The DJ is the only thing that saved this mediocre bar / wannabe club from a dreaded 1-star review.
My partner and I went as a special date. My boy thought the bouncer was hot. We both enjoyed some of the eye-candy clientele. We both liked the exposed brick and wood-finished decor, even if the place was too dimly lit. But rock & roll theme? Meh. Decent try.
And yeah. Rock is loud (mind you, not one song the DJ spun was rock. It was all dance, progressive, or r&b). But there's "NYC bar on a weekend" loud and "Splash" loud. A&K would be better off sticking to the former especially in such a tiny, reverberant place.
I mean, I love snugglin' up on my baby bear's ear...but we couldn't hear each other speak unless we did just that. I've actually had easier times having conversations in Splash. We like music that loud when we're dancing, not when we're chilling. And, while A&K haS a WEE bit of open space where on could dance, it's impossible to do so with a full bar. Still, the DJ spun excellently.
Moving on to drinky time, I had five of my famed Groupons. Each entitled us to two of any drink on the menu. Mix and match as we please. The bartender knew nothing of the Groupon site let alone A&K's specific Groupon deal. So he argued that he didn't know it he should take them but would go ahead and give us $9 off of our total bill per Groupon.
Painting yourself as the hero when in actuality you're not educated about what your business has offered to its patrons? Hell to the no!
The ONLY reason we were eventually given the deal I paid for was because I told the bartender, "Look, man. I've been a server since I was 14 years old. I'm going to tip you on the full value of what the bill would have been. But I'm not settling for anything less than what I paid for."
At that point the bartender stopped disputing the value of the coupon to us and made the drinks we requested...but kept pulling aside various employees and pointing to us during the entire 3 hours we were there. He also purposely kept avoiding our signal for more drinks, only coming over to us when every other customer had been served. This crap made it mostly impossible to just relax and enjoy the environment! Big not cool boo!
But I was determinded to have a good night. So I told myself that I was willing to move past everything else if the drinks were on point.
NOPE!
The $11 drinks were served in 8 oz. tumblers, which were filled to the top with ice before being filled only half way with liquor(s) and the other half with mixer(s)!!! This included the Long Island's which are served in pint glasses!!!! These were $5 happy hour sizes/liquor quantities anywhere else, y'all!! To us, that's shameful at those prices.
Of course we thought we were getting bent over because of our Groupons. But this is how he poured EVERY drink! And check out the mini-Cosmo pic I posted. That amount of liquir wouldn't have filled a martini class...yet was served in a huge wine glass. I would've laughed and walked out had I been paying full price.
At the end of the night I asked the bartender to put the tip on my credit card. He said, "I'll have to run it for $1 and then put a $20 tip." Dude just poured us the weakest drinks in the history of the world after hassling us about our Groupons and then would only accept a full 20% gratuity??? Really???!!!
In our opinion if you're thinking about going to A&K do yourself a favor first. Go right around the corner to Bar on A, get proper service with heavy-handed pours and twice the liquor for less money...and then, if you must, make A&K your end of the night pit stop so you're nice and sloshed and won't care where you are or how far you're being bent over each time you pay for a drink. -

Needless to say, I love Pete Wentz a hell of a lot more than his bar.
The atmosphere is laid back and it's pretty awesome if you're their on the right nights. Performances by artists in the industry and flowing drinks? Count me in. I suppose the one drawback I had while at Angels and Kings was that the bartender I had didn't know how to make a hulk shot for my group... among a few he didn't know how to make. The drinks at the bar aren't the best but it's really the events you need to look out for at A&K - that's gold. -

Bleh. i don't mind spending tons of money on awesome drinks, but for some reason I couldn't do that here. Maybe it was the bartender that didn't give a hell about me.
Probably that.

Had a party here and can attest only that:
a) the staff is friendly and awesome
b) the arrangement of seating is such that it's great for groups and parties, sort of a loungey situation in a dive-ish bar
c) the happy hour is killer: half price ($3 for a rum drink) till NINE o'clock
In short, a good place to get drunkadoo. -

I don't get all the hate for this place. Is that the cool thing to do now?
Anyway, this place is my go-to when I have friends come visit the EV, or pretty much anytime I want to have some beers with friends. You can always guarantee a fun vibe, good music, and cheap beers. ($4 PBR's all the time - 2 for $5 on Trainwreck Tuesdays)
They have a decent trivia night going on the first Thursday of every month with prizes for every round. Trainwreck Tuesdays are always a good time with Rob and Erica DJing a mix of GOOD 80s music as well as popular hits. AKoustic Mondays also tend to bring in some talented local artists, as well as the occasional popular touring band.
So basically, if you're laid back and want to rage with your friends and listen to some good tunes, AK is your place. If you're a pretentious douche who loves to complain, go wait on line at PDT - and act like you can afford to drink there.Listed in: East Village Happy Hour Bar…

The bartenders are incredible. Very friendly. The place was much classier than expected, with candles lit all around the bar. They had Casino Royale playing on the far wall and top 40s music all night. My friends and I went just to check it out -- Happy Hour is $2 for any vodka drink from 8-10 p.m. But no one really starts filling the place until 11ish. But even at midnight on a Saturday, the place really wasn't packed.
Overall: Good place to kick back with your friends over a couple drinks. -
Review from Susan s.
Why did I get dragged here on a Saturday night? I usually love coming to Angels and Kings. The music was Top 40 and the crowd was young preppy college kids. PBRs overpriced and people just standing around just wanting to dance but didn't want to be caught embarrassing themselves.
I tried to stay here for the shortest amount of time before running out with my ears ringing... -

I had my birthday part at Angels and Kings and it was pretty good. I got there around 1045pm and it was rather empty, which isn't a surprise for NYC on a Friday night. I called about 2 weeks ahead to reserve a table, and I was able to get a nice long area of the black leather couches (which was nice, since it was January and we all had winter coats). Overall the decorations were pretty cool.
The DJ music selection was a mixed bag and I wasn't really digging it. If you're looking for pop music (like Fall Out Boy's music), you won't find it here. -

I've somehow ended up here twice in the past year. The first time I was here, there weren't too many people there which made it kind of nice. The bar isn't that big to begin with and there were just enough people to not make it feel incredibly lame. We were able to get a seat and just sit down and talk over our beers.
However, the second time I was there was not as good. The place was PACKED. The music wasn't too good.
I think my judgment on this place is that while I'm not opposed to going back here if I have to, I'm definitely not going to seek it out. The space itself is sort of pretty. The beer selection is limited. Drinks price are average for Manhattan bars. In short, nothing special. -

New York, NY
I will admit that the reason I went here is for Pete Wentz. Despite being a terrible musician, he does provide me with my daily dose of celebrity gossip. So, I curiously wandered into his bar one night. I was actually pretty pleased. The crowd wasn't pretentious or annoying (as most East Village crowds are). The bartenders are a bit rude. The DJ is in a strange location (he's risen up to resemble God, methinks), but he plays pretty good music-most times I've been there he's been playing early 90s rap, which is a-ok with me.
It's usually not super crowded, so I think it's an okay place to hang out with close friends. However, it's crowded enough that if your goal for the night is to meet people, I think it'll work too. It's a pretty small place, so once it starts to get crowded, it's probably best to leave.
