Angelo's is a bit over-rated, but it's definitely one of the better breakfast restaurants in town.  It is a diner, but it's an upscale diner that is cleaner than most and has better service.

As far as food goes, I recommend the corned beef hash- it is a heavenly mash of corned beef, potatoes and onions, and the portion is huge.  I had this with two sunny side up eggs and raisin toast today.

I've heard great things about their french toast too... but I'm lactose intolerant and can't eat it :(

Anyway, this place is definitely worth trying.  The only thing I don't like is they have really weird hours (they close at 2 or 3 pm) and the wait for a table can be super long on weekend mornings.

If you like diners, you will like angelo's.

If you like good food, you probably will find angelo's just a-ok.

They don't really offer anything unique or unusual except they make their own bread.  I read one reviewer saying their crab cakes benedict was "unique".  I love crab cakes benedict, and it is not a unique dish.  It is served almost everywhere breakfast is served.  Additionally, Angelo's crab cakes are mediocre.  But, you get a MASSIVE portion.  I've never seen crab cakes of this size and you receive two.  As usual, like most diners, their food is relatively inexpensive which is a plus.

I was dying to try the infamous deep-fried french toast since I moved to Ann Arbor.  So I dragged a kind friend out to breakfast with me and we shivered in the cold outside for half an hour before rushing for an open spot at the bar on the take-out side.  Not too bad seating, actually, since there isn't as much of a rush in that building.

But yes, the food.  The coffee refills were less than frequent, but the good was decent.  I tried the french toast because of the rave reviews, but found I enjoyed the berries on top more than the actual toast.  (My own fault; I'm not a fried food person)  It was a little flavorless, honestly, and I had to push myself to keep eating it.

Still, I'd love to go back and try the pancakes.  Their flavors look awesome, especially the pumpkin.

This place gets 3 stars because it has great specialty raisin toast. The rest of the restaurant is quite normal compared to most Ann Arbor diners. It has booth seating, cute diner wall art, and quick service. Their menu is generally the same as any breakfast place or koney island but the quality is much better. It has a slightly fresher taste. The place is eclectic and original in decor and charm.
There are mostly college students and families seated here, but it a good place for a casual and informal lunch meeting. I enjoyed my experience and the service was great. There were three refills of my coffee and water. That is how I like it ;) & the place was packed. Parking in the back was limited though.

The breakfast is fairly traditional but their homemade bread sets it apart. They also serve Clancy's Fancy hot sauce which is made in Ann Arbor and I love that. The atmosphere is fun. Drawback is that on Saturday and Sunday you will always have to wait probably around 20-40 minutes to be seated unless you arrive very early in the morning.

Having worked at the University of Michigan and being within two minutes walking distance from Angelo's, I ate there quite a bit. It is best known for its breakfast and bread but it has an alright lunch menu as well. I enjoyed the staff and the fact that they remembered what my "usual" was.

The problem with Angelo's is that it has poor parking and there is often a line.

The bread is probably over-rated but I like it. People complain that it is too thick and it is used for their lunch sandwiches.

For breakfast, you can't go wrong with the pancakes. Be sure to get a side of raisin toast. Their french toast made with their bread is pretty good. The deep fried version is a bit too much for me.

For lunch, they have pretty good reubens, but be aware that they use their thick bread so it will be a lot to eat.

If you feel like something on the lighter side, try their soups or chili.

I'm finding it really tough to find a reason to like this place.  I've been here three times, now.  The first time was in January around my birthday.  I got the eggs benedict and hashbrows.  The hubby got the corned beef hash and eggs.  Both were quite good and we wanted to come back again, but never got around to it.

I have a job nearby and have gone to Angelo's twice in the last two weeks.  The first time, I got the special of huevos rancheros.  To put it frankly, it was almost disgusting.  The tomatoes were canned, which is fine, if they were cooked or marinated or something to make them taste like something other than the can.  They weren't.  The beans between the tortillas reminded me of dog food.  About the only redeeming thing on the plate was the potatoes.  The service was also lacking.  I sat at the bar since the place was packed, and a waitress stood directly in front of me and opened a beverage on the bar, about two inches from my plate.  I understand the need to grab a drink, I know space at the bar is tight, but there was an empty stool next to  me.  It just seemed to intrude on my space a bit by putting your drink next to mine, by my plate.

However, I was asked how my food was at the register, I told him and he removed it for no charge -- even though I somehow managed to eat half.  So I made it a point to return and try something else.

I came back today, same time as last and got the crab cakes benedict.  I loved the eggs benedict before and many had enjoyed the crab cake version, so I thought I was set.  First off, my server was the slightly rude one from last time.  The space I took at the bar was occupied by her water.  After asking if someone was sitting there, she said no, then refused to move her water.  So I moved it for her by the empty stool next to me.  I ordered a Coke and she asked me if Diet was ok because regular was out and she didn't want to change the line.  WTF?  No.  I ordered regular.  If I wanted Diet, I would've ordered Diet.  She seemed annoyed I was going to make her change the line.  WTF?

My food came and I was genuinely disappointed.  My eggs were over-cooked, the crab cakes were mushy and tasted funny and the hollandaise was flavorless.  Has this place really gone downhill in less than a year?  I wasn't queried on how my food was, I paid and left.  I'm not sure if I'll give it another chance.

I don't know what people see in this place to flock to it at such levels that it's packed.  But I don't get it.

I love Angelo's.  I try to make it there whenever I have time -- time being the key element.  It's not uncommon for the wait to be upwards of 45 minutes to get a table.  (There are secret ways to get seated almost immediately, but if I tell you, I'll be less likely to be able to utilize those in the future.)

The deep fried french toast is to die for (and may take you there early as it's so loaded with fats and sugars)!  Pancakes are great.  Omelets are amazing.  But the variations on the benedicts are, in my opinion, the best food around.  Lox benedict and eggs florentine vie for my favorite breakfast foods on the planet, with only slight competition from a street-side vendor in Tianjin, China.

I think Angelo's is fuckin' awesome and I come here every time I visit Ann Arbor.  I've never experienced any of the problems some other people have mentioned.  Service has been good every time I've been here and the food has always been right-on.

The crab cakes benedict are my favorite breakfast item ever, and they do them proper here.  And the toast, oh man the toast, I could come here just for a pile of toast.  Best pancakes I've had.  Decent espresso.  Fresh-squeezed OJ.  Legitimate hash browns.

I've been here a handful of times and have always had a great experience.  Angelo's is the tits.

Delicious food and great service. My sister and I came here for her birthday (her meal was half-off). She had the chocolate chip waffle and said it was delicious. I had an egg white omelet. Their omelets are a different style than I am used to, very thin in an almost crepe-like fashion, and quite tasty. Their homemade bread is good, I tried both the wheat and the raisin. I liked that the food ingredients were very fresh and nothing seemed greasy the way diner food can be. In addition, the coffee refills were constant without asking - my mug was always full!

A cozy bustling spot on the University Campus.  We ate here on a Sunday morning arriving before 9 am and were happy to get seated right away. My son ordered the standard breakfast that for around $7 consisted of 2 huge pancakes, a heaping portion of eggs (he chose scrambled) and about 5 strips of bacon and despite being a ravenous teenager, could not finish it all. I opted for the Deep fried French toast which was also sufficient for two to three people.  A great value and tasty breakfast.

I think my problem with Angelo's is that I came here with really high expectations. Not sure why this was (I think there might be this general feeling of excitement that floats around Ann Arbor about Angelo's). But Angelo's felt like an average diner when I actually got inside and tasted the food.

I think it compares nicely to many of the other breakfast spots in Ann Arbor - but honestly, there are more exciting places to try for out-of-towners. I ordered the deep fried french toast myself and loved the yummy blueberries, strawberries, and whipped cream on top. The french toast itself was hard from over-frying and not that exciting in taste (but large proportions!). I think because Angelo's had an average diner's feel to it and I love diners, I would definitely come back. Next time I'll at least know what to expect.

Ideal brunch spot! Found it on Yelp and have no idea why there are any bad reviews. Great service, a fun ambiance, and fantastic food. All the types of French toast are divine. Probably because the bread is home-made. The bacon is some of the tastiest anywhere. We will make a point to eat here every time we're in Ann Arbor.

Somehow, somewhere, a long time ago, Angelo's was a legendary, mythological, magical place. I must've missed that time period.

Now, don't get me wrong. Angelo's isn't horrible. Far from it. I just don't think it's this phenomenal, epic, awe-inspiring breakfast spot. I think it's your average joint that somehow was made famous by means unknown. There's no way Dick Siegel's song has made it far enough outside of Michigan to make Angelo's as famous as it is. Don't lie to me.

Their food is your typical breakfast/diner fare, and it's all pretty good. Nothing exceptional, nothing noteworthy. The one exception to that, I would say, is their corned beef hash. THAT is quite good. I don't generally like corned beef hash, but I will order it at Angelo's.

If you're gonna check the place out, make sure to get there early. This place gets PACKED!

Angelo's has the best breakfast in Ann Arbor. However, be aware that it has two very small parking lots that fill up very quickly. Also, unless you get to the restaurant before 9:30 AM or so, be prepared for a long line. The food is definitely worth the wait, though. My favorite has to be the crab cake benedict (eggs benedict on crab cakes), which is truly unique and delicious!

    Le sigh.

I wanted to have some satisfying french toast/pancakes/something sweet for breakfast and we decided to go here as it is within about a 5 minute walk of where I am staying.

I ordered the raisin french toast.  They make their own bread so I was looking forward to some amazing french toast.  In my opinion, the french toast was dry and not very flavorful.  I solved this problem by using lots of butter and syrup but I feel like those 2 things should be used to accentuate french toast instead of make it edible.  It wasn't bad, but, if you are looking for really moist tasty breakfast, perhaps look elsewhere.  Our waitress was also grumpy.  She wasn't rude necessarily, but she seemed to be hardly going through the motions and had already turned to the next person to take their order when the previous person was still talking.

I decided to use the restroom before I left.  The bathroom was dirty and looked like it hadn't been cleaned all morning.

Overall, this is an okay place but I will try an alternate option for breakfast the next time I'm in Ann Arbor.

We found Angelos on Yelp while looking for a new place to try when visiting A2 and they didn't disappoint.  The pancakes were awesome, the portions are perfect and the service was good.  The homemade raisin toast was great (although my wife thought the bread was too dense).

The restaurant has a nice diner feel to it and all of the staff were friendly.  It was a busy Sunday morning and we were seated near the door.  The greeters did a great job with crowd control without coming across as pushy or offensive.

This place has achieved legendary, strike that, EPIC status it seems.  It has all the hallmarks of being a great restaurant.  It's been around forever.  It's named after an actual person.  There is a line out the door every weekend morning.  Hell, I do believe that there was even a song written about this place (or it's a coincidence).  That makes me really want to love this place, but the food just gets in the way of my love.  I have to warn you, this is a very sad review.  I hope you have a box of tissues nearby.

Once upon a time (last weekend), I Heather G., went to Angelo's with an unfulfilled need for a good breakfast.  Now the background to this story is that I know how to cook and I can make an omelet at home.  I can also make a frittata.   When I go to a restaurant and I order an omelet, I expect an omelet, not a frittata.  What is the difference?  When you make an omelet you wait until the egg is almost cooked, and then add the veggies (or whatever) and fold it over resulting in a pile of veggies wrapped in egg-y goodness.  With a frittata you throw the veggies in the egg before the frittata is done, resulting an the veggies (or whatever) being mixed in with the egg.  My omelet was clearly more like the frittata.

But since I had my heart set on an omelet, I was disappointed.  No, I was sad.  I was even more sad that I had to order and pay for a side of breakfast potatoes.  And you know else makes me sad?  Bad coffee.  Bad coffee makes me real sad.  Angelo's has bad coffee.  Angelo's makes me sad.

But there is one thing that pushed me beyond sadness, to the depths of breakfast depression:  I could have gone to Cafe Zola.  Yes, I still would have waited in line, but at least I would have gotten an actual omelet, at least it would have come with potatoes, and dammit, at least my coffee wouldn't have tasted like acetone.  And the really f-ing heartbreaking thing is that it would have cost about the same amount of money.  I'm really broken up about this missed food opportunity.

Anyway, I ate all my food, it was okay.  I liked the raisin toast with real butter and cinnamon and sugar.  But was it epic?  No.  Was it something I would write a song about?  No.  Would I freeze my tail off while hung over and wearing a pair of Uggs?  Well you'll never catch me wearing such god-awful footwear, so no.

I got two words: pumpkin. pancakes.

Awww yeah! These are some pumpkiny treats. You can really taste the pumpkin in these flapjacks. Not just a smattering of pumpkin pie spices with no pumpkin and calling it pumpkin. No, this is legit orange stuff going on here. Fluffy and perfectly spiced they certainly made me a cheery gal on a cold winter's morning. 3 huge pancakes slapped with a side of the Canadian bacon for a little bit of salty side (and the sugar free syrup that they offer which I appreciated) and I had one heckuva meal.

Angelo's is an Ann Arbor institution and it shows. The crowd of college students huddled up in their sweatpants and ugg boots on a weekend spill out the door. Heck, the line for a table on a Friday afternoon was even pretty significant. But if you want a solid breakfast at any time meal or a hearty sandwich prepared with fresh and tasty ingredients it's worth giving Angelo's a wait.

The pancakes are great, as mentioned, but they also whip up some killer savories. The smoked Angelo reuben (a heaping serving of smoked turkey, cole slaw, swiss cheese and thousand island dressing) is fantastic and served with a side of sweet potato fries, more than enough for two meals. The sweet potato fries are tasty although I wished they had a little more kick to them--more salt? A dusting of cinnamon and sugar? A side of honey? Spicy seasoning? Just something else to give it an extra oomph! But still, mega tasty. Just looking around the room when we were waiting for our meals was enough to make me want to order one of everything on the menu. Nothing looked like a bum plate to me.

Trying everything on the menu? I'm up for the challenge.

I've been going to Angelo's most weekends for the last few years for a weekly breakfast date with friends, so clearly, I like it a lot. (It's the first time I've ever been a regular somewhere; the servers know what "the usual" for me is, it's like a movie!)

To me, Angelo's is a great diner-style restaurant for a hearty meal. If I want a fancy brunch, I go to Cafe Zola, otherwise, it's Angelo's. I've really liked everything I've ever ordered there, especially the homemade corned beef hash, though I must admit I'm not a big fan of the omelettes (they don't come with potatoes and are a little more well done than I like). And what's the usual? Coffee, two eggs scrambled with raisin toast. It's a ton of food, I can usually only eat half, and pretty cheap too (about $6).

Of course, as others note, there's usually a wait on weekends. The trick is to get there early (9:30 or earlier) or late (after 12:30) on the weekends. On the weekdays, parking is a bit tricky if the the lot is full. For me-- given the food and the service-- it's worth it.

This week's FBT was in the far away land of Ann Arbor.  I met up with Jeffrey B. and Jay A. for a very special FBT.

First, parking in this area and finding this area is awful.  This is the worst location ever since it's so hard to get to and park, yet the best location ever because there isn't another restaurant for blocks and blocks.

The breakfast was excellent.  I had The Omelette which is an omelette where you can choose four mix-ins for $7.75.  I chose feta, avocado, bacon and spinach.  There was a lot of mix-ins and they were all very flavorful.  I thought it was excellent.  The omelette was huge and was accompanied by homemade bread (choice of white, wheat or raisin).  The meal did not include potatoes.  I wish the omelette was a little smaller and came with some potatoes, but the omelette was good and filling.  It cost an extra $2.25 for a side of home fries.

Jay got the pumpkin pancakes.  I tried them and they were excellent.  They had good flavor and were cooked well.  The rest of the breakfast menu included a number of omelettes, pancakes, french toast and some eggs benedicts.  The menu was varied and had a lot of good options.

It was a great FBT with great company.  The only negatives are the parking and the lack of potatoes.

The place resembles a 1950s diner. The food is pretty solid and you won't be disappointed with the portion sizes (I asked for some spinach on the side and was given a heaping portion for $0.75) and the menu selection (they have waffles and your typical egg benedict, egg florentine selection). There is a line on weekends and they don't take reservations. This is all very typical however, and there's nothing very remarkable about the experience. There are just too many other brunch options in Ann Arbor.

Angelo's is a landmark in Ann Arbor and even though I have lived in Ann Arbor for 27 years, I have never found myself going to Angelo's.  I have tried Angelo's on the side and enjoyed their offering, but I never had the desire to go to Angelo's... don't ask me why...

So yeah.. 27 years later... I went to have brunch with friends.  We waited about 20 minutes for our table, ordered our coffee and looked at the menu... since it was my first time, I went with my usual breakfast items... western omelet, which did not come with cheese, so there was extra charge for adding cheese... also added sausage and got it with raisin toast (there's an up-charge for this... 25 cents)...

The omelet was decent, nothing special... the raisin bread was good... I'm told I need to order their specials, so next time I go, I'll try something that's unique to Angelo's.

As for the service, our waiter was nice and easy going.  He forgot to get the OJ for one of our friends, so be brought it and didn't charge us for it.

Like I always say, try it for yourself and see how you would rate the establishment.

I think for many mid-western students, this is their first experience to "fancy breakfast."  I think it's this nostalgia, combined with a heavy dose of Ann Arbor style that gives you a perennial A2 favorite.  The mythos is so powerful that the huddled masses will cue up for hours just to be stuffed into this turkey with dozens of pajama clad college students looking for morning relief.

Well, for the first time in ten years, I went again with some A2 expats, and hoped to get some decent food for an over inflated price.  Well, I am sorry to say that all we got was the over inflation...  The mexican omelet was filled with a taco bell like chili, and was covered with two slices of velveeta.  The chicken salad was a plate of lettuce with a few lone tomatoes and slightly dry chicken.  Raisin toast was dense enough to be building material.  Coffee and juice were fine.  All this with a 2 hour wait for a table, and food service, and a 25 dollar price tag.

Anyway, i'll give this place another chance next decade.

I've been here four times now, and once I'm back to Ann Arbor it's gonna happen again.  If you didn't get the memo yet, there will probably be a wait if you come during normal eating hours, so pleeease get over it or find another place to go.  Surprisingly, on Father's Day it wasn't that bad.  Note: this was ON and not FOR Father's Day, thanks to modern medicine's impressive array of prophylactics.  The line was small, but we bypassed it regardless by taking a seat at the bar (pro-tip: great way to get food quick).

So far I've had the corned beef hash, the three-egg-sausage-ham-bacon-toast meal, and a ridiculous omelette.  I've also had bites of various sweets that my girlfriend likes for breakfast, including the latest one, chocolate-chip pancakes with raspberry and a ton of whip cream.  A decadent, and yet shrewd choice.  Everything so far had been awesome and so for my fourth trip it was difficult to try something new, but I did, and that new dish is the sole reason for this review update.

    Crabcake Benedict.

This may not be unheard of, and I don't want to give the impression that it's the craziest thing in town.  I only emphasize it because of how incredible it was.  I'm not even sure why I ordered it actually.  I was like that guy on the ESPN Fantasy Baseball commercial who couldn't choose between all the great batters during the draft and then spurted out the name of a pitcher, his third pitcher in a row.  I was like, omelette, eggs benedict, eggs florentine, hash, steak and eggs, I don't know! and then I just said it.  Lord am I glad I did.

The upside to the crabcake benedict is that it tastes amazing and might be my favorite food now.  It's definitely not imitation, and the crab cake is homemade and just falls apart under the fork.  As other reviewers have noted, the hollandaise sauce here is excellent, and I couldn't get enough of it.  The eggs were poached perfectly, and of course, the whole thing is on two slices of homemade bread.

The downside is that it makes the surrounding vicinity smell like fish, and your significant other might be bothered by this while trying to eat chocolate-chip pancakes with raspberry and a ton of whip cream.  But that sounds like her problem and not yours, amirite?

I like Angelo's.  For one, they do the simple things well.  The coffee is no special brew, just Paramount, but it's a very good choice.  The bread you could make with a breadmaker in your own home, but no one uses that crap, and it's very good at Angelo's.  Everything else is just spectacular.  There's no "Super Bird Flying Chimichanga with Green Chilis" like at the Broken Egg, but at Angelo's you can order anything without fear of disappointment.  At least that's been my experience.  And it's well worth the wait.

Crowded before 8 am on a Saturday. The parking is limited, take quarters for meters just in case. It's a very old school place with tons of students and alumni chattering about the upcoming Penn State game. Lots of people seem to be regulars and know each other.

    The food rocks though.

We both got the special. Eggs are delicious, my husband added cheese to his but I got a side of Hollandaise and mmmm. We were both overwhelmed by the meats and ended up taking a bunch home. The ham was stellar, the bacon very nice, the sausage was thick but a bit too porky for me. Hashbrowns were just ok. The raisin toast OMG, happiness. James slathered his with jelly and I got some cream cheese (they gave me three containers wow).

The waitress was a chatty hoot, service was efficient and everyone was very friendly.

We will be back but earlier in the morning or sometime on a weekday. Definitely swing by for your birthday, get a free one with a purchase of a second.

I'm just going to come right out and say it: Angelo's is overrated.

I know, I know - it's one of those campus institutions.  If you've gone to school at U of M any time since the mid-50s, chances are you've had a greasy breakfast at Angelo's at some point.  And chances are that when you come back to town for a football game, Angelo's is one of your two Must Eat spots.  But as a recent transplant to A2, I have no such nostalgia to convince me that I need to stand out in the cold or battle for parking for what is just a diner breakfast.

That said, through some miracle my husband and mom and I got a money spot and a table at 8:30 on Homecoming weekend with no problem or wait.  We had a totally adequate breakfast, the highlight of which was the raisin toast.  My husband had to send his eggs back because they were woefully undercooked.  I had a half order of the crab cake benedict, which was still almost too much food (and I was quite hungry!).  The coffee was slightly better than your typical diner fare.

I'm glad we finally had breakfast at Angelo's, but I imagine we'll only be back for the free breakfast they offer to you on your birthday.  That is, if we can find parking, which we couldn't when we tried to get breakfast there on my husband's birthday.

Yeah, yeah, it's crowded. We know... but here's the secret -- go early if you're headed there on a weekend morning.

I know you're likely hungover (or wait, is that just me?), but by the time you wake up enough to drag yourself here and realize you're actually up, the food will provide a good antidote to what ails ya!

I don't come here all that often -- it's more of a special brunch/breakfast place.  When I do come here, however -- it's all about the thick, delicious french toast.

I'll usually end up at the Northside (and wait there a bit, too) rather than here -- they're so close and Nothside is a fave.  But Angelo's isn't bad. It's just better to get there early enough to avoid a ridiculous wait!

One thing -- I sometimes wish they were open late into the night.  I think they could make a go of it with the odd hours of nearby hospital workers and lack of coffee shops in the immediate area.

Angelo's always makes me a little sad. Like anything in this town that is of some quality, people hype it to such an extent that you arrive at a place expecting to have your socks knocked off-and find yourself being knocked down to earth.

Ann Arbor definitely exemplifies the idea that no expectations are the best expectations and I wish I had none when I first visited Angelo's. I probably would've been much happier with it. My first visit left me feeling down as I expected to have the best breakfast of my life and found that it didn't compare at all favorably to the other purveyors of supposedly great breakfasts that I had tried in many other towns (from small southern towns to San Francisco to Philly).

I went back about 6 months later (too late for the pumpkin pancakes, sadly!) and had the eggs benedict, which was quite good. Their french toast was neither cakey nor moist-just fried heavily without much crisp to it. I don't recommend it. The fresh berries are a nice touch in Michigan, though. The service is really nice, however, and they do make a good cappuccino.

I really feel like I'm raining on the parade with this review. I just posted it because I feel as if it's more instructional as to how to deal with Ann Arbor's dining in general.

Edit: For the past two weekends, I have visited Angelo's on the imperative of friends. I tried the pumpkin pancakes today. They melted in my mouth and left me with a big, ridiculous grin on my face. I also tried the crab cakes eggs benedict and had a bite of the Deep Fried French Toast last weekend. The eggs benedict was so damn good that I didn't mind the impending extra half hour on the treadmill. The French Toast was quite tasty this time. I've bumped it up a star for potential. Still four stars for the wait and apparent lack of consistency.

I still stand by my previous statements on Ann Arbor dining.

This is a fairly typical brunch venue.  I wasn't particularly impressed with the food--it's decent and hearty, but nothing was especially remarkable. A lot of people mention that the bread is homemade and delicious, but to tell the truth, I found it a little too dense and quite bland. I've been to Angelo's a few times, and each time I've ordered some variant of omelette. The serving portions are fairly large and I usually end up taking home a third of my meal.  The place was crowded both times I visited (on weekday mornings).  The meals are a little expensive, but it's what you'd expect of the cost of an average brunch.

Addition: I was referring to the plain bread in my original post, but I have also had the raisin bread, which I actually really like.

I love Angelo's because it tastes like nostalgia.  But an objective review of the food is that it is solid breakfast fare, but not quite equal to the legend.  Definitely worth it if you can get a table in less than 20 minutes.

But, is it blasphemy to admit that Zingerman's has better raisin bread?

Angelo's is a tough one. You come here with high expectations based on the years of glowing reviews from Ann Arbor-ites on how great this place it. You usually wait in long lines to get a seat.

Well, I took a day off and my wife and I decided to give it a try. We found a spot in the 8 car lot (Yeah, free Ann Arbor parking) and found that there was no problem whatsoever with getting a seat, possibly because it's Monday.

Angelo's has a nice diner look of days gone by, hand written special boards, tiled walls. Very nice.

I ordered the corned beef hash, she the deep fried french toast with a side of bacon, and two coffee's. Service was good. Our cups were kept full of nice tasting coffee which was not too strong nor bitter.

I enjoyed my Corned Beef Hash. It had a large amount of corned beef mixed in with the potatoes; perhaps a 50/50 mixture. With a bit of salt and pepper to taste this was very nice; not exceptional, but nice. The raisin toast was phenomenal though. The breads are made on-site and have a nice heavy texture that goes well with the jelly. The eggs that came with the hash were pretty blah. Not being much of a salt user, when somethings blah... it's really blah. Salt and pepper and the eggs picked right up.

My wife had the Deep Fried French Toast. This was made with the raisin bread and surprisingly, it was pretty boring. It was cover with blueberries, FROZEN strawberries and lots of whipped cream. None of these things were able to really make this dish stand out. The side of bacon was A-OK, a bit too crisp for my taste, but that's the way my wife likes her breakfast meat.

We each kept about 1/3 of the order to share with each other, just so we could really check out something different. I think we both came away with the feeling that the food was good, but not really worth the drive downtown, nor the premium price tag.

i'm being mean by giving this local favorite a 2 just because I feel like defying the majority - most U of M students will tell you how much they  love Angelo's.
I am very fond of most places in Ann Arbor but i just don't get what the hype is all about with this one! it is just your typical diner - with the typical omelet and toasts. For no apparent reason, people are willing to wait in line for half an hour to get a table here. I gotta admit I was one of those people the first time i came there. but never again (not willingly at least - sometimes I'm forced to by my Angelo's-loving friends).
