I play cards with my neighbor sometimes. She's an 82 year old widow from southern Italy her husband was a wildly successful artist. She has stories galore about the good old days and all the amazing nights out in New York in the 60's and 70's. When she told me she had not been in over 10 years, I knew I had to take her when the weather got warm.

This past Friday was our hot date and Angelo's was her top pick. I must say after reading the reviews I was a little skeptical. I was prepared to fight of an upsell and eat overpriced food with tourists.

Our waiter was definitely on our team. He helped my neighbor with her menu since it was a bit dark and even recommended we only get one salad to share since they are quite large. All of the food was excellent and so was the service. Only complaint was the calamari in the pasta was a bit chewy and it went uneaten. The waiter charged us for regular pasta instead of the Zuppa Di Pesce to compensate. ($12 less).

As we left he asked in Italian if I was her granddaughter and said I was beautiful.

Great food, great company and great service. I'm sure if I could go back in time to 1965 the meal would have been even more amazing, but for 2012 I am a satisfied customer.

    Ciao Bella!

Excellent, quality Italian food. The service was ok. We kept asking the waiter for bread, extra plates, and water and he gave us an attitude as if we were bothering him. Ummm...aren't you my waiter???

Anyways, I guess he realized he was being a jerk (or wanted a good tip) so he apologized.

The food was.... *speechless*. We ordered the hot antipasto with stuffed mushrooms, mussels, peppers, eggplants and it was delicious. The veal with rigatoni was hot and delicious. Oh my it was so good. "Mister" ordered the steak dinner (I forget the name) and his was great also. However, we both fell in love with my dish *cheesy grin*.

And last but not least their homemade tiramisu. Tiramisu is one of my favorite desserts and their tiramisu was a slice of HEAVEN. When the waiter told me "homemade" I was nervous, at first, but after the first bite I was done.

I can't wait to pay another visit to Angelo of Mulberry St. However, I am not looking forward to waiting over an hour to be seated. We went on a Saturday night and unfortunately they don't take reservations for "two". But will probably go on another night.

Yes so many of you feel Angelo's is a glorified Little Italy tourist trap. While Little Italy might be just that Angelo's which opened in 1902 is far from it. Take it from an Italian you really can't do much better than Angelo's in the United States for southern Italian food. If they are doing anything illegal on the premises it is probably slaughtering baby calves in the large basement for their outstanding veal. Does not matter how you take your veal it will be simply outstanding. This is the only place I have found in the US that cuts and cooks veal properly. The veal is about as thin as prosciutto and is so tender you can cut it with your fork. My favorites are the Veal Parmesan, and the Veal Saltimbocca. Angelo's makes all of their pasta and sauce themselves. If you do not like veal any dish you order here is going to be excellent. The fried zucchini as a shared appetizer is wonderful and if you have room for dessert the cannoli is the best you will find in this county. You can't go wrong with the tiramisu either.

If you're going here for dinner you should call and make a reservation. If it is busy you might need to wait even with a reservation. This is not a 1 seating table restaurant and it might be jammed at 5PM or at 10PM. Complaining about waiting will get you nowhere. Maybe it helps that my last name is Genovese and I always make a reservation but I have never had to wait at all even on weekends. Service has always been fast but they don't rush you, this is not a place to go if you're looking for a quiet dinner. Most of the servers have worked their 20-40 years, you treat them with respect you get the same in return, even though I don't agree with it and am picky with service if you complain here you probably will get nowhere even if it is legitimate. Luckily I have never had an issue so service has always been very professional for my wife and I.

Lastly prices are high, much higher than the other old time restaurants in Little Italy (Vincent's, SPQR, and Umberto's) I have eaten at all of the other places and find Angelo's to have superior quality food. If you want something a little cheaper my second favorite is Vincent's. Vincent's actually does have slightly better sauce, especially the extra spicy sauce! I think it is worth the splurge every now and then and if you want outstanding Italian food then Angelo's is the place. If you want cheap prices and greasy shit on a plate go to Olive Garden.

Loud, noisy, and a wait staff that starts off cool & stand-off-ish but warms up as you compliment the food. Now 'dats Italian! Best stuffed pepper I have ever had - and it was sans sausage! Excellent Papparadelle dish. Huge and yummy fried veggies, including tomatoes! -- enough for 4 people.  Meh on the soup. Definite go-to place for next time in Little Italy.

Little Italy...ever the tourist trap, yet I still find myself there at least once a year for a predictably good Italian meal. I typically only go there when a friend is in town and wants to "experience" New York City.

Honestly, there are a lot of good restaurants on Mulberry St. They have to be decent because the competition is so fierce. The non-stop assault of little Ginos standing in the doorway of their restaurant trying to solicit business is almost unbearable...actually, it's the worst part of going to Little Italy. "You eat lunch yet? C'mon folks...we got the best sauce in New York!"
Nowhere else in NYC do you get that kind of in-your-face begging to try a restaurant. However, there is one restaurant that does not partake in that kind of shameless petition...they don't need to. That place is Angelo's.

I have been 3 times now and have never been disappointed. This last time, our waiter's name was Giovanni...complete with the 'old country' accent and all. He had the look of someone who would just as soon sprinkle parmesan on your pasta as cut your throat. Don't worry though...it's just part of the shtick in that area. The wife and I got the Pappardelle Campagnole. It is astounding. So simple yet so good. There were 3 different kinds of meaty mushrooms layered in a kind of vodka sauce with thick, toothsome noodles. By the way, all of their pasta is house-made...along with their sauce. That is what sets them apart from some of the other pasta-factories on the block.  We have also had the cannelloni there as well, which is also incredible. The service is fast and just right.

The one thing to note is that at night it will always be crowded and there will always be a long wait. Lunch is a perfect time to go. We were seated immediately. Another note would be that the place ain't cheap like some of the other restaurants on Mulberry. But, you get what you pay for.

I have been coming to Angelo's since a friend moved to New York in 1998. In a nutshell: old school mafia feel (love that), traditional (delicious) Italian food, fun (tiny) bar area, and the service can be brash. But, it is New York for goodness sake. I love that!

    Food I recommend:

Appetizers: Funghi Selvatici Di Bosco Saltati (wild mushroom appetizer) and Calamari Fritti.

Pasta: Rigotoni Vodka, Pappardelle Campagnole, Ravioli Ripieni Di Aragoste (lobster ravioli) & the Capellini Angelo (simple yes, but delish!).

Tip: Skip dessert here and go around the corner to the fantastic Italian bakery!

I do believe that the restaurants in Little Italy survive because Little Italy is down to a block and all the restaurants have been there for the last century. This one, like all the other restaurants I tried and were disappointed in, came highly recommended. I was craving serious carbs so I figured Italian would be perfect. Shared the pappardelle with mushroom and tomatoes and veal marsala with a co-worker. The veal was good but certainly nothing to be excited over. The pasta was bland and I can make better sauce at home easily simply by pouring it out of a jar and adding a few spices. The service was decent but the prices for the quality of food I got was outrageous. Nice decor and all but really not worth the effort. I wouldn't recommend this place to anybody and do not plan to go back when I'm in town again.

Awesome dinner!  Front dining room had great ambiance.  I ordered Rigatoni w/ meatballs and my husband ordered Fettuccine Alfredo with Italian Sausage.  Both were perfect!

We were originally turned away by the Maitre'D saying it would be 1 1/2 hour wait, even though I called earlier and was assured we didn't need reservations...it was about 7:00.  We left and came back (about 10 min later) only to be told it was an hour wait, and we could wait in the bar.  We opted to wait, have a cocktail and were seated within the hour.  The bar was packed and all 6 stools were occupied.  Be prepared to stand...so wear comfy shoes!

All in all, it was well worth the wait.  I guess some of the rudeness goes with the turf!

Excellent food. Really very delicious. But - shady, shady, shady.

So, I've been here once before, about 5-6 weeks ago. I liked it and I thought it seemed nice and authentic and while maybe a little pricey ($27 for rigatoni & meatballs), I decided to take a bunch of people here on Saturday night.

It was smack-dab in the midst of the San Gennero festival in Little Italy and I thought we were pretty lucky to get a table for seven at prime dinnertime (8pm) without more than a 10-15 minute wait. Too bad our luck soon ran out.

Upon seating, we were poured water (remember this later) and given a basket of bread. No butter, no oil. Just bread. We were also asked if we'd like to try the antipasti. Okay, we said.

We all ordered a main dish, except for one of the kids who ordered a giant bowl of soup. My kid likes BUTTERED PASTA NO SAUCE NO NOTHING OMG so that's what I asked for. Remember this later. We also got two bottles of wine (maybe 42 bucks each) for the four adults to share.

So, fast-forward to about an hour later when we're all done and we received the bill for FOUR HUNDRED TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS. This included the appetizer, the wine, THE WATER (what the fuck) and the dinners.

I was very surprised to see that the (medium-sized, not small, not large) plate of antipasti (which had about 4-5 slices of fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, and some assorted meats) cost $70. I was also shocked to see that we were served water that cost $7 a bottle. When I asked about that, I was greeted with a shrug from the waiter who seemed to understand English perfectly over the last hour or so, but now was suddenly struggling with the language.

Okay, so we got the royal screw from this dude. I was pretty pissed, and even more so when I did the math in my head and I saw that not only were we ripped off, but we were charged $27 for the buttered rigatoni for my kid.

Our waiter, who I am sure has been at Angelo's for 100 years or more and must be a very nice person regularly, took my son's bowl of pasta off the bill to placate me. So that brought us to $398 including tip. FOR PASTA, PEOPLE.

I'll tell you that not only was I embarrassed that we were treated this way (in front of some very close friends, I am sorry to say) but I'll never spend my money at Angelo's again. And I have a lot of freaking money to spend, you thieves.

Final note: Expensive appetizer, I get it. But charging us $14 for water is obscene, especially since you were pouring it AS were were sitting down, and no one asked if we wanted tap, bottled, etc. Also - the $27 buttery rigatoni still burns my ass.

I loved this place! And I so want to give it 5 stars but on principal alone I am only giving it 4- for two reasons. We were sat at a table for two right by the door. There were plenty of tables open and people right before and right after us were sat at "bigger" tables that seat 4 people. So this annoyed me because it was between the front door and host stand and hard for our waiter to get to. And this caused my annoyance at the waiter- which is not totally deserved. Took some time for him to come to the table and with that said took time for us to get our check and get it back so I could sign the credit card slip.

With that said- the food was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.! OMG! It was the most packed place that we walked by and we only knew of it because my sister had been there before. She got the lobster ravioli. I got a veal dish. Both amazing. We got the Mozarella dish to start. Fried mozarella with sauce. YUM! And its fresh. So fresh. I want me some more. I will go back for sure again!

While expensive (everything is Ala Cart, so entrees do not include pasta) the food was very well prepared. I tried the lobster ravioli and while not filling in itself, the suburb bread made an excellent accompaniment to soak up the sauce. The cannolis (while not my dish) also was delicious.

We passed on the dessert because there are other places we like to go to in Little Italy for dessert. The staff was polite and efficient, but not the friendliest we have seen.

Still, I would go back for another meal. The ambiance and the food were very good. This place is definitely old school in the good sense of the word. And yes, it is in the middle of a tourist trap, but hey forgetaboutit.

Went here with a very large party for dinner one night.  The food was spectacular.  We ordered a lot of food and had a little bit of everything.  But, the two best dishes of the night:

Medaglioni di Manzo Portoghese - Filet mignon with mushrooms and port wine.  This was one of the top two best steaks I've ever had.  The port wine gives a nice sweetness and the steak was so tender.

Linguine Nere Arrabiate - A Thursday night special.  Black linguine with crab meat and shrimp in tomato sauce.  Amazing!  One of the most perfectly cooked pastas I've ever had - just al dente.  The sauce was subtly spicy, laced with whole shrimp.  Fantastic.  if you go here on a Thursday, you have to try this dish!

It's a little pricey, but the portions are big.  You can easily share an order of pasta between two people.

Food is awesome. Best in the area. The wait time is annoying, but it is what you have to expect for a touristy area with this place having the best food. Always got a great crowd both young and old. Perfect spot if you are traveling in the area, on a date or most of all looking for one of those meals you will talk about. A little pricey, but expected for a NYC hotspot.

    BAD EXPERIENCE! OVER RATED!!

Food was so so and was not worth its price. I have tried better. Service was not that great, did not offer me wine menu. During the meal the buss server stole my cell phone. we didn't notice till we left, and we went back to look for it. They said they haven't seen it. Then I checked outside again, but I was thinking it must be in there ...so i went in again and by this time they had someone sitting at the table we were sitting at. I guess they thought we were disturbing the customer, so the next thing you know they returned my cell phone and said "ITS NOT ME, ITS AMEIGO!"

Disappointing trip from this experience to NYC. And maybe they guess we were tourist cause they charged us OVER 20% garrulity!!! Ridiculous!

The best Italian eatery I have encountered in Little Italy. And I'm a man who loves his pasta.
For appetizers we had fried mozzarella (which I have never encountered before) and calamari. Both were delicious and whetted my appetite for the entrees.
I had the Vodka Rigatoni, an orange pasta dish. This is a personal favorite, and they absolutely nailed it. The flavors were all there, and resulted in possibly the best dish of pasta I've ever had.
The staff were quick to serve and refill our beverages. Overall they made my party feel welcome! I will come here again.

Five Stars says it all, yes?  I have one suggestion:

    SHARE!  The portions are obscene!

Best baked clams on the planet.
    Best veal on the planet.
Best ala vodka on the planet.

8 of us had an entree of our own and we were all happy, but had more than half our dinners still on the plate and couldn't take anymore.  So we wrapped them all up and gave them out to the homeless people.

First time to Little Italy and this place did not disappoint. I was a bit concerned we'd be unwelcome with 3 boys aged 6-8 in tow, shorts still slightly wet from a recent splash fountain visit, but the maître d'hôtel did not blink an eye when we inquired. Feels good to be accepted.

I ended up getting the Tuesday black linguini special (Linguine Nere Arrabiate, to be precise). Sooooo good and everyone wanted to try it. I actually never bothered to check but I assumed the 'black' came from squid ink, which got the boys interested and conversating and such.

Service was also excellent - our waiter was a low-set man of age who was alternately adorable and grumpy. Clearly an old-school server who knew what was good and took care of us throughout the meal, even making recommendations for gelato around the corner. I'd much rather have this guy helping us than some 26-year-old, especially in a neighborhood that screams tradition.

After a great night last night...watching the 2nd installment of the "Sherlock Homes"  I was so hungry. I recommended to my friend that we try a new Italian restaurant in Little Italy, you know.... "A real Meal" After doing a quick search on YELP! I decided on "Angelo's" and boy was I pleased. My friend got the mixed seafood dished ...the one featured in the restaurants profile pics (YELP) and I got the other dish (pasta filled with ricotta and  cheese) Sorry I don't remember the name! LOL it's on the menu under Pasta.  Well anyway, the food was fresh, authentic, and worth the trip. I highly recommend Angelo's and I will be a return customer and so will you, I'm sure of it!

The place was noisy. I felt like I was in some godfather movie with the Italians from the jersey shore. The ladies look the housewives of jersey shore. No variety. Same haircut same ghetto nails and whinning voices.

The waiter spoke Italian in front of you. for I know they would making fun you. Our bus boy came to give us water like the was watering his lawn, zipping by. The manager didn't come to asked how was your meal. The place was packing like they need the business really really bad. The menu were dirty and old.

I order a some angel hair paste with tomato sauce with cheese. Soon after I started to eat. the cheese started to stuck to my teeth and the fork like baked on / burnt on food. Fred order some Brasciola Dish. It was basically a giant meat ball filled with "brisket" like meat or meat loaf and soak in a bath of sauce. My house salad was oddly mixed with corn and Celery go figure that one out  . what is so Italian about corn and celery in your salad. another first for me.

The painting on the walls were old like some thing you pickup at a bed bath and beyond. The paint job was wall was not done professionally. looked Ike they spend the weekend doing it. The wall paint bleed to the ceiling.   My Inlaws did a better job and they were two ladies doing it.

This visit to Angelo's was a recommendation from one of Fred's fridend who visited the place and it came highly recommended. Sadly I would not come back here.

Maybe tourist think it is the best place on earth. But as a local neighbor, I would not go back there.

I just love the tacky outdoor seating, like the sidewake is not small enough and fumes from cames passing by.    "Waiter's I will take whatever she is having and some car exchaust".

    Trust a local not a tourist's review.

Pasta is GREAT there, there's no denying that.  However, be wary of the waiters there.  When we went, the waiter added an extra $30 to the bottom of our bill (Handwritten) and when asked what it was for, he said, "Service and tip".  We told him that gratuity is included usually only in parties of 6 or more (we were a table of 4).  When he heard us talking about it, he decided that he would take it off the bill.  He admitted that he thought we were TOURISTS and gave us a sappy story about how he was stiffed tip by some other Italian tourists earlier that day.  Beware and make sure they don't trick you into paying for anything extra!

I cannot say I fell in love with this restaurant. The food was good, but nothing stood out. I think I got the Chicken Parmesan, my friend got a steak. The service was fantastic, it was all rather quick. I guess it's just the ambiance and prices. Italian always has a higher price point, but I would have liked to have tasted some exemplary sauces, rather than feeling like the food was boring.

Cocktails are $10, for those who are wondering about drinking with dinner

I read the reviews and decided to give Angelo's a try with my wife and 7 year old son. Got a little nervous when we sat down a a table and noticed a couple glasses, plates and silverware looked like they could use some extra cleaning. The waiter seemed aloof for the most part, but the bus boy was very helpful and eager to please. My wife had the eggplant and I had the pasta vodka. There's no kids menu so we ordered our son the pasta and meatballs at $26, but we figured we would have leftovers to heat up for lunch instead of sharing. The portions were decent size. The food was FANTASTIC! Best sauce on all three dishes that I've had at a restaurant in a long time. Entrees were reasonably priced, especially considering that it's NYC. I would definately go back again.

First let me say that Ive been to Italy over 10 times and know good Italian food - Last night I went to Angelos with a group of 16 people.  Food was nothing special at all - I got what was essentially grilled chicken with salad and it was bitter, flavorless and more onion than anything.  I saw basil in it but there was so little that it had no effect on the taste whatsoever.  In addition, the service was equally mediocre and the prices were disgustingly inflated.

They completely overcharged my party for numerous things and when we approached the waiter he had nothing to say, nor did he offer to even try and fix the problem.  Instead he acted busy and walked away -

The biggest slap in the face was that 27% was added to the bill for service since our party was more than 6.

Post dinner, 3 of the guys who had the chicken parm felt nauseous but the jury's out as to what made them sick to their stomach - Was it was the food or the fact that we were ripped off?

Needless to say, Angelo's on mulberry street will never get my business again.

I have been to Angelo on few occasions. The first thing I have to say is that you definitely should consider sharing, the portions are really really big.
I recently went with 5 other people and the food we all ordered was delicious, although I must say that they like to cook with a LOTTA oil.
We ordered prosciutto with fresh mozzarella, and artichokes as apps and then for main courses we went all out for different pasta dishes: ala Vodka, pappardelle, spaghetti, cannelloni and rigatoni with ragu. We shared all these dishes and truly enjoyed the experience.

Lotta 4-5 stars about this place - the authenticity, the character, the quantity of food, the service but I have to go with 4 instead of 5 because the food in general was a bit too saucy too creamy i,e, IMO hides its better qualities - for example the veal dish we tried was great veal but too much smothering with cream, prosciutto, greens, eggplant...depending on which veal dish chosen.  Having said that the osso bucco special was sublime...and LARGE - the marrow inside the shank was about 3 times the normal...delicious!!
I'd give this a 4 1/2 if I could just because of that osso bucco

O, the broccoli rabe was perfectly cooked, fresh, clean (steamed), and again,a  HUGE portion

and the pappardelle app was excellent but again, a bit TOO saucy

Wine list a bit pricey for what you get

Angelo...if you make your veal more traditional, less creamy and saucy, you would be PERFECT

All in all, a very pleasant Italian meal in Little Italy.

I was in NYC yesterday with a few coworkers for a convention.  After the convention we did a little shopping and asked a girl in one of the stores where we should have lunch.  She suggested this place.  Big mistake!  The service was pretty awful.  The place was not busy at all and the server acted as though we were a bother.  The food was so so.  The pasta did not taste homemade... and I've had some amazing homemade pasta at other restaurants.  We would have had a much more enjoyable time going elsewhere.  I would not recommend or go to Angelos again.

We arrived at Angelo's of Mulberry at around 7:30 w/out a reservation and sat at the bar till a table was ready.  The bar is very, very small and too busy to enjoy as a place to wait.  Thankfully, our table was ready after just two drinks.  The service is good and the food is also good. I would surely make this a stop when in Little Italy and you want some down home Italian food in and old school scene!

Angelo of Mulberry Street is one of my favorite restaurants in Little Italy.  The food is absolutely delicious, the portions quite large and the waiters are vintage classics.  I can't go to New York without a visit to Angelo!

We dined here on the recommendation of a NYC resident, and had a nice dinner. We did make a reservation, and were able to get seated right away, at 7PM on a Saturday night. ( all members of your party must be present!) There was a line out of the door waiting, so I am glad we had a reservation!

I thought that the bread they brought out was good, so what if it was cool? I keep my bread at home in the fridge. ( I know that is probably weird.)
For Appetizers we had the Calamari, and the Fried Mozzarella in Special Sauce. Both were very good and were quickly devoured.

For our entrees, I had the Filet Mignon with Mushrooms, others in my party had the Chicken Parm, Veal Parm, and the Gamberi Angelo. Everyone really enjoyed their entrees. I will say- we had been to Del Frisco's the night before, so I was a little disappointed in my steak.

Dessert- My sister had a cannoli and proclaimed it to be the best she has ever had. My husband had cheesecake, which he said was good, though not a traditional NY style, he said it was creamier and had a lemony flavor- I suspect it was made with some ricotta cheese. Keep in mind that when you dine here, you are right around the corner from the Original Ferrara's Bakery!

Overall dinner was nice- the service was fast and friendly. I feel like they moved us in and out pretty quickly. The atmosphere is fun, very family friendly I felt. I will note that it was VERY warm in the restaurant, to the point that one member in my party had a hard time eating because she was overheated.

Angelo's was our first Little Italy experience and we really enjoyed it.

Warm atmosphere, good bread, quality dishes, questionable prices and service a little stuffy.

I had to beg for attention at the bar even though the only one sat. I liked our table. Back room was coziest spot in the place. No specials? If there were any, we didn't hear them. Our waiter was looking to turn the table or go home. Either way, it was bad service as he stood over our table after we finished. Thanks for the tourist treatment tho. He actually added gratuity to the check even tho were only a party of 5.

Wine list was unimpressive with $40 minimum house merlot. Good selection of entrees but disappointing portions. 10 stalks of asparagus for $9...etc.

Good italian in Little Italy isn't hard to find. I'd rather spend less and get better service next time I'm on Mulberry.

I have only been to Angelo's three times in the last ten years, each time with my friend, Sue, who is a consummate Italophile...  I don't live in the city anymore, so these days Angelo's is more of a delicious nostalgic haunt than a dinnertime reality.  Here is what I can tell you about the Angelo's that I know: they offer heavenly bread, ambrosial red wine, and rigatoni vodka that I have tried (and crushingly failed) to replicate dozens of times.  The waitstaff is great, the atmosphere warm.  I laugh and laugh with Sue when I'm not making small mewing sounds about the food.  I'm heading back to NYC for my birthday next March and Angelo's is one of the first stops on my list.  I am looking forward to it!

This place is nothing special.  I went here with a large party and the waiters were very friendly, but the food wasn't that great.  We started with a small appetizer plate.  It had 1 grilled shrimp, 3 over breaded clams, and a HUGE chunk of semi-melted mozarella cheese.  Meh!  The cheese ruined it!  I love cheese, but not like this!

I tried the gnocchi and it was pretty good.  The Snapper was a little too fishy and the sauce was just ok.  I also tried 5 of their desserts, and once again, nothing special.  Other members of our party didn't have comments that were any better.  I really had high hopes for this place. :(

This place has the atmosphere down: Fat ladies in furs and the New Jersey contingent of what's left of Cosa Nostra. It's packed like a rush hour bus with tables so close you'll be noticing humanity squeezing by you, brushing their asses and genitals on your shoulders.

The noise is astronomical. Very loud place, so bring a bullhorn or a legal pad to communicate.

The food was good, but not "let's go back there again" good. I woke up at 4am with heartburn, most likely from the garlic extravaganza that was my gnocchi.

My waiter was a simpleton. He graduated from Dum Dum Academy. Shortly after we ordered, all three of us were given a taste of something. Was it something compliments of the chef? No. The waiter had decided that maybe I wanted to split my appetizer with everyone at the table. By the time we realized that it wasn't an "amuse bouche" it was too late - everyone had eaten my appetizer.  I asked the waiter why he split my appetizer with everyone at the table even though I'd never asked him to. "I thought they'd like to try it," was the answer.

Service was spotty. Naturally, right when we decided we were finished the waiter vanished like Hoffa. We managed to locate him a while later and ask for the check which he delivered before vanishing again. He's what we'll call a 12-percenter.

If I was a tourist from Idaho I'd probably love this place as it's what I'd expect from a restaurant in Little Italy, and they don't have this stuff in Idaho. But I'm not a tourist from Idaho. I'm a whiny, cynical New Yorker who knows there are many better places in my fair city.

Judging by a lot of the reviews on here, people were either all or nothing and it appears based mostly on the service.  I can see how the service could be annoying.  It took us about an hour to get a table and we got there around 8:30.  That said our waiter was pretty friendly, and I don't really go to any restaurants to feel pampered by the staff, it's all about the food for me.  The food here was OUT-STANDING!  I've had gnocchi many other times, This was absolutely the best I've ever had, and set the personal standard for me.  The sauce was simple, but flavorful, and just amazing.  The calamari were extremely fresh and the best I've had as well.

We went to little Italy with nowhere specific in mind, and picked the most crowded place on the street.  We were not disappointed one bit.  If you go, expect a wait, and expect who appear to be friends or relatives of the owner/staff to be sat ahead of you, but stick it out, the food is worth it.

Well, what can I say.  The welcome was exceptional, had to stand by the door for 'hours' without any attention.  Once at the table I was treated to an interesting catering by the pretentious waiter and the eventual food gave me the same satisfaction as giving oral sex for one hour without getting any response! This exceptional treat was clearly reflected in the bill!
But hey! Don't let this get you down.  Maybe I caught them on a bad day (or I had one), so do visit them, perhaps you will prove me wrong or you can use the experience as a reference point.

I visited Newyork last summer, and our family went out for classic italian food. We walked into this dim lighted, very classy warm feeling 'little' restaurant. Everything had a little touch of a retro vibe to it as well..including the bathrooms.

The waiters and waitresses were very pleasent,  and even had a french accent!

It's formal surrounding. Though, it being New York, people arent dressed up while walking the streets all day.. so, I doubt it would matter what you were wearing.

The food was good, as well as big portions.. but it was extremely expensive. About $30-$40 per person, NOT including if we ordered any appetizers or desserts.

If youre willing to pay a chunk of change for your meal, this is a great place for you.

I'll just stick to the Olive Garden. =]

I have been a loyal customer of Angelo's for 25 years.

My dining experience has always been excellent. The waiters are career waiters...I have only seen 2 new ones added over this 1/4 decade! These guys are lifers!

The food is always consistently excellent. The service is great too!
This place is always hoping. So if you are a timid mid-westerner who is terrified by mobster movies, you may be intimidated. It is worth the experience,

I ordered one thing here: (homemade) Pappardelle Campagnole.  The pasta was al dente (+1) and littered with baby tomatoes, chanterelles, and whole pieces of garlic (+2).  A little oily, but I can be forgiving of that.  Oh. So wot's the prob? SOMEONE THREW IN A VAT OF SALT.  What a waste. (-3)  It was the only thing I ordered, too.

My companions shared a huge shellfish-containing starter platter that I couldn't eat that, incidentally, was also declared salty.  But I should mention that one of them ordered the San Pietro/John Dory for her main and that wasn't salty.  Nor was it exciting according to the portion I tasted, although she enjoyed it.

OH.  And they automatically added 20% to our bill. (-1)

Just before leaving, I gave my companions some chocolate I'd bought for them, and our heretofore serious waiter said, "Very nice, I like," that made me do a double-take to see if he was sporting a light grey suit and thick black moustache. (+0.5)

    "Attire: Dressy"
Nope! Okay, so a few people were dressed up, but it was jammed with tourists, and I really think they'd be too busy to care anyway.  Waiters running everywhere, and the owner having fun dimming the lights over the course of 30 seconds...right behind my seat.  This place is hella noisy.  Hella.  That's not a word I typically use.

So, the numbers don't tally, but I've settled on two stars.  If a friend truly wanted to eat here (with me), I'd probably order the same thing but request that no additional salt be added.  Otherwise, I'll be spending my money elsewhere.
