5 reviews for Angellino's
I can't believe nobody's reviewed this place yet.
Okay, maybe it's because I was a poor starving (well, not really) student when I used to go here, but I remember a lot of good, HUGE, meals. The amount of food you're served at this place is enough for 2 or 3 sittings. No joke, and I'm no lightweight (especially after eating here too many times). Decent pasta, some really good sauces, and a solid menu, especially for Mansfield. Not the cheapest meal in the area, but if you work out how many meals you're actually getting, it's a total bargain.
I realized how into this place I was when small children started staring and pointing at me, saying things like "Mommy, I thought it's rude to eat like that."
You know you're full when you can't even bear the thought of tossing an after-dinner mint into your mouth, for fear that you really might explode this time.
When you're first seated, you're brought out some bread and roasted garlic...excellent way to start. I always, ALWAYS, get at least a cup of their New England Clam Chowder, I think its absolutely fantastic. The portions are huge, which is nice, but my girlfriend and I usually opt to split a calzone to offset the tremendous portion sizes. Beware though, we learned the hard way that the Vernon location doesn't make calzones because they don't have the oven for it. I have had traditional dinner entrees, and they were very good. Also, this is not a chain restaurant, it is simply a restuarant with two (count em, 2) locations. Not a chain.
If you're interested in portions as big your torso, then please, go to Angellino's. You'll get your fill and at least two meals more worth of food! But is quantity equivalent to quality? Not always, no.
My trip to Angellino's followed a hike out in the nearby woods with a boy I'd met. Yes, it was our first date and I was as sweaty as could be on a warm late summer day. But he wanted to do dinner, and even though it was only around 4 something (early bird special much?), we hit up this joint and it was pretty well full for the time of day. Like a cute, awkward couple, we both ordered Chicken Parm (he sans the sauce, me with the whole megillah). To be honest I can't remember how the service was, but I remember that the food was just okay. It was a first date, so I was focused more on the conversation, the fact that I was smelly and gross, and trying to figure out where the date was going.
But the food: Just okay, nothing special. It's a chain Italian restaurant and you can't expect too much. My suggestion? Spring to spend a few extra bucks and head to downtown Hartford to Hot Tomato's!
I used to go here when I was at UCONN and we needed a break from the dining hall. While I wouldn't say it is authentic Italian food, it sure beats spaghetti slop from McMahon dining hall.
I've been a bit iffy about this place, though, since the last time I was there...a group of us girls were seated at a table next to a wall, which had a little hole in it, which apparently housed a few bugs. These bugs proceeded to come out of their hole and make their way onto our table while we were eating. These weren't ants - they seemed to be small roaches. Or termites maybe? I'm not even sure what termites look like. It really actually grossed me out, and it takes quite a lot to gross me out.
I've never felt the same about Angellino's since then.
We celebrated our parent's 25th wedding anniversary and we had about 25 people total, everyone left very happy. Because we had private room, we could even bring our cd player and we played our parents favorite songs , not many restaurants would let you do that. Service is always great. They have the best garlic and warm bread, good drinks. Big plates, I can never eat a full dish myself but everything is very tasty. Nice Italian restaurant for this area! On weekends they are always very busy, so reservation would be a good idea.
