Review from Adam A.
San Francisco, CA
I recently took a trip for the first time down to New Orleans. The food blew me away, the ambiance made me giddy, and the culture thrilled me. I come home to the SF Bay Area to find food just doesn't taste as good anymore. The intense flavors, the feeling of southern comfort (not the booze, but similar effects)... gone.
No more! Angeline's transported me back to the feeling of being in NOLA... and honestly the food is better than I had out there - and more appropriate for the region, to boot. Vegan wild mushroom jambalaya??? Really? How does it manage to taste this good without having some sort of animal brutally murdered to make it? Sinfully delicious food without the guilt!
Try their swamp water - iced tea and lemonade hybrid. Try their mashed sweet potatoes, and most importantly, DEVOUR their brussel sprouts. I could order three of them as my only meal there, and float out of the restaurant quite happily. Never have I had something as deceptively tasty as that dish. As a warning, I'm almost a hundred percent sure that butter is the main ingredient of that dish... it isn't health food, for sure.
And for dessert - caramel banana bread pudding. Decadent to the extreme! And if you must, you can also feast upon the yummy beignets in their clouds of powdered sugar (but I'd just order two bread puddings if more dessert is necessary). -

South San Francisco, CA
Having been to New Orleans, this food doesn't compare with the meals in the South, but there are limited options in the Bay Area, so this is a good choice if you are craving Southern comfort food. We had several different dishes, so other people at our table can try. First off was the Jambalaya, this was one of the better dishes, not too spicy with the right amount of kick and flavor. The Brussels Sprouts were covered with oily, it left you with a fat, greasy feeling. The sweet mashed potatoes was a good side to accommodate the Crawfish Ettoufee. The entree was good, and came in a hearty portion, but it was a bit on the salty side. Lastly, we tried the beignets, and they came out hot and crispy.
Also, the wait wasn't too long, we made reservations and they were very accommodating when our full party was late. Note: they are planning to expand very soon, so the wait won't be so bad. -

Having grown up in the South I was looking forward to a treat. I had the Cajun Mixed Grill and was sadly disappointed. The sausage flavors struggled against too much heat. The ribs were very tender and smoky but drenched in so much a sweet sauce that I almost sent them back. The shrimp may have been flavorful but were lost in the mix. The potato salad should have acted as a break from the heat but simply added to the fuel.
And LOUD MUSIC? Seriously. This place is tiny: Why have the music so loud that you can't hear the people across the table?
I may go back in a year to try the oysters and the friend chicken. -

Review from Kathy L.
Berkeley, CA
If you are a fan of Paula Deen, honey, this is the place for you! It goes without saying but I'll say it anyways: wear your fat pants.
The good:
-Fried oyster-BIG crispy nuggets of oyster goodness. Hard crunchiness of the cornmeal batter + softness of the oysters= Non-sogginess!
-Dim, cozy atmosphere and attentive servers
-The AMAZING letmeslopthisoneverything gravy that comes with the fried chicken
The OK:
- Fried chicken: maybe the hype got the best of me but I was expecting some gooood, southern home-style chicken. Instead, I got a stylized interpretation of fried chicken strips. Tops in the boneless category but still inherently less delicious/ authentic/ moist than boned. The sweet potatoes got too gingery and sweet after the initial few bites.
- Hush puppies: if you've never had it, please do so now. Otherwise, they're so-so. Too much batter and not enough flavoring/ onions/ anything to break up the monotony.
- Fried Catfish: exactly what it says. In conjunction with the hush puppies, it made a very fried, but bland plate and will leave you craving for vegetation.
- Gumbo and jambalaya: it pains me to say this but while good, they were not in any way memorable.
The Bad:
Long wait, but they'll take your number and call you!
Having grown up the South, I looked to Angeline's to reclaim a taste of my childhood. The first time, I tried the jambalaya and gumbo, waiting for visions of spanish moss and sounds of cicadas, but I never left Berkeley. A fluke? The second time I tried the fried stuff, but felt nothing except indigestion. Next time, it'll be beignets, the crawfish etouffee and the shrimp po' boy and maybe I'll be surprised. But for now, it's good food, but not transportive. -

AWESOME PLACE!
Traveling with a co worker through Berkeley over lunch. Needed to find a good place and decided to check Yelp for some good recommendations.
Boy, am I glad I found Angeline's! The food here is fantastic. The Jambalaya was the best I ever tasted. The service was terrific and the prices very reasonable. -

Review from ABBY A.
My beautiful (and skinny) cousin, Chanda, took me here one Friday afternoon and I loved every dish we ordered, especially the DEEP FRIED OYSTERS! Oh-my-God. They also have thee best Jambalaya I've ever had. I also tried their Fried Chicken which was also delicious, but I strongly suggest their Jambalaya over the Fried Chicken. Did I mention the Deep Fried Oysters? Oh! And you mustn't forget the beignets; they're so warm, sweet and fluffy! Angeline's also serves delicious brussels sprouts which aren't as bitter as they are at other restaurants. For dessert, we had the Banana Foster Pudding which was a little on the sweet side, but that's never a bad thing. Aside from the limited parking right in front of the restaurant, I have no complaints about Angeline's except that I wish there was one closer to SF!
Abby A. will be back for those deep fried oysters and jambalaya! -

The food is mostly excellent! Nice beer selection...
You won't walk away hungry, for sure.
The atmosphere is appealing, however a bit crowded feeling. But everyone is always having a great time and the service is very good.
I dig it!
Note: Parking SUCKS every where in Berkeley... -

Question: I'm staying in at Berkeley, soooo what's yummy to eat there? And what could keep me walking around if I visit, say, San Francisco?
Answer: You can start by gorging at Angeline's.
o.o? How so? Here's the plan.
Before DL & I boarded the BART towards SF for NYE (acronyms, argh x/), we started off on a late lunch at this Louisiana-style eatery, located across Downtown Berkeley BART, and is a few blocks away from the main Cal campus. Décor-wise, Angeline's is slightly cramped & traditionally rustic yet neat-looking with a minute mix of festivity, i.e. some green & purple Mardi Gras elements hanging atop the wall w/ the kitchen.
We began our appetite w/ these insistently raved Hush Puppies ($4.95). Slightly reiterating my Quick Tip, the fried food-crazed Yelpers are telling the truth! The 1st bite had me shush, as in, silently concentrating on how superbly well-put, approachable to my chompers, & flavorsome the buttermilk & the cornmeal palpably emerged, alongside spreading the likewise upheld honey butter for a delicately sweet contrast. If you wanted some greasy goodness, unfortunately you gotta look elsewhere b/c there's undeniably no spoonful oozing out of these 6 fritters.
More or less 10 minutes after gobbling those 'lil cornmeal doggies we had our Shrimp Po'Boy ($11.95), Angeline's Gumbo ($5.95) & Sweet Mashed Potatoes ($4.95) placed at our tiny wooden table. This humongous-portioned sandwich was, mmmmm, just oh-so delicious with the uplifting Creole mustard yet WITHOUT THE NEED OF MAYO ;). I made this generous pile of tasty & impeccably battered shrimp even scrumptiously brighter with equally liberal amounts of Angeline's kickin' hot sauce, which isn't as spicy as Tabasco. Meanwhile, I didn't eat DL's Gumbo, but when I sampled his mashed yams, latticed with hints of ginger & vanilla, the very sweet-sensitive taste bud of mine had to politely say, "No thanks."
So, after demolishing quite a lot of the fried greatness, that's where we used up almost all those lovely calories by walking back & forth on historically hilly SF. Leaving with more-than decent albeit bearably slow service & a 4-star Berkeley eat, there goes my detailed response to the question above. Oh, and Gung Hay Fat Choy =D! -
Review from Kelly T.
This food is so rich, so authentic and so yummy that it's hard to stay away from Angeline's. I love the brussel sprouts, and the fried chicken is some of the best I have ever had. Although a bit on the expensive side, Angeline's is a real treat, and well worth shelling out a little extra cash for the quality.
Something else I love, just because I am in the know, is that they support a lot of local organizations and are good community people. It just makes me love this place that much more.
There is usually a bit of a wait on the typical date nights, but that isn't a problem for too much longer, let's hope! I am pretty excited about the notices I am seeing that indicate they are expanding. It's always nice to see the good guys win. -

My wife and I had a date here last week and Angeline's blew our minds! I got the special, a pork chop with blue crab butter, fingerling potatoes and green salad. She got one of their most popular dishes: buttermilk fried chicken with mashed sweet potatoes, gravy and green beans. Both were heavenly, and mine was made all the better by the best root beer I've ever had. Try it!

Though this is one of the only few Cajun/Creole joints in the Bay, its a great spot...The decor subtly reminds me of my favorite city in the States and they also carry Abita beers which is a decent brewery but it always gives me the nostalgic feeling of New Orleans! The only knock I have is that I noticed the Po'Boys arent really "Po'Boy" prices but like any authentic cheap sandwiches from any culture, someone is bound to "dress it up" and charge an arm n a leg for it.
I've had the Hush Puppies (must have), Gumbo (decent), Fried Chicken (good but they can use dark meat!), and Shrimp Creole (yum) and I'm definitely looking forward to try more items in the near future! -

We have been to New Orleans 2 times & are always in search of any food here in the East Bay resembling the food we have in NOLA!
We found Angeline's a few years ago & have been in love ever since! We also attended the Crawfish Boil last year & LOVED it!
You must try this place...everything is good! We just wish they had fresh crawfish all the time!
Thanks Angeline's for the awesome food & for allowing us to reminisce about NOLA each time we visit! -

Over 1400 reviews? Now I'm just a number here but I'll write something anyway.
I ordered the gumbo. I grew up in Alabama for 5 years and yes, this was authentic and delicious. The decor doesn't really fit the food though. It's too nice. The south is full of mom and pop joints serving this kind of food in tacky little kitchens and on the roadside under a tarp. Take a drive down there on the back roads and you'll see a truck on the side of the road selling either fresh watermelons, boiled peanuts, and sometimes gumbo. There are many little places run out of what looks like a shed with a picnic table out front selling some of the best food on earth. Angeline's does a great job of bringing that flavor to Berkeley and serving it in a more sanitary "California" environment at the California price. Everyone at our table loved their food. I'll go back again. -

Berkeley, CA
Pretty cool place, it is small but cool. We got really lucky to be sat because they were really really busy. It definitely seems like they are popular with regulars. Our table was super tiny though, it was kind of like eating on a frozen dinner tray table. It is certainly cramped in there but most places in Berkeley are I suppose.
The Crawfish Etouffee was really really tasty, I would recommend that dish for sure. The Shrimp Po-Boy was also good but if you come here I think you should get something more special than that, especially for dinner because it comes with potato salad which is really good but strange to eat for dinner.
Overall a pretty cool place to eat and pretty tasty. The desserts looked awesome but we didn't get any because we are poor but they looked great and I was jealous of those that were eating them. -

We stopped in last night looking for something exciting and saw the great reviews on yelp, so I thought we'd give it a try. The atmosphere was great, full house with a line out the door. The host was very friendly and gave us an accurate estimate of the wait and a few laughs while we admired the tasteful modern meets Bourbon Street decor.
We were seated and the waiter was very friendly and made a few recommendations, and the service was great.
Honestly, the food was pretty lame. It was what I would expect to have if I ordered the same at an amusement park. We ordered our watiter's recommendations, the Crawfish Etouffee and the Cajun Shrimp. The Crawfish Etouffee (recommended favorite) was okay, but he Cajun Shrimp was pretty bad. Both plates arrived with a giant lump of pasty sauce dropped on a flat bed of rice. Green beans with a dusting of Parmesan cheese sat awkwardly on the edge of some very boring plates.
There was nothing subtle or very interesting about the etouffee, just kind of spicy gloppy sauce over rice.
My wife had the Cajun Shrimp, and honestly, I don't know how they let it out of the kitchen. We switched plates halfway through the meal and the sauce was awful. A tomato base that tasted like it was burnt when re-heating and then had a bunch of sugar dumped in to cover it up. She though it tasted like bottled bbq sauce. The shrimp was, however cooked perfectly, which made the sauce seem like even more of an insult to the plate.
There were a ton of folks in there, and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, so I guess it can't be all bad. Maybe we ordered the wrong things, but if this is typical, I don't understand what the big deal is. -
Review from Monica S.
We came in a group, first timers the lot of us. Our quirky, upbeat server helped us navigate the menu, oohing and aaahing over his favorite dishes.
The man knows his cajun food.
Here's the bite-by-bite:
1. Hushpuppies! Crisp fried balls of cornmeal yum!
2. Holy moses, that fried chicken! The chicken is salty and juicy, coated in buttermilk batter and fried in thin strips until extra crispy, served with sausage gravy and green beans. I was skeptical whether I'd ever find anyone that could give Bakesale Betty a run for the money, but Angelines might be it.
3. Beignets! We tried these at Cafe du Monde in NOLA and weren't impressed; after trying Angelines, I understand what a beignet is supposed to be. Fried (sense a theme? leave the diet at home) puffy donuts topped with powdered sugar. What was best about these beignets is that they were perfectly crisp on the outside but moist and airy in the center. The dough, too, is not too sweet, which is perfect if you're like me and lean towards the savory My table mates, on the other hand, spooned on the powdered sugar with glee. To each her own!
4. Banana Bread Pudding! Too many restaurants serve bread pudding that is dry and/or painfully sweet, but not Angelines. This dessert was bursting with banana flavor and smooth, rich cream, just sweet enough. If they offer you bourbon whipped cream on top, say yes.
Also, fun fact: on Monday and Tuesday, red wine is half off (by glass or bottle). That's supposed to be good for you, right? Excellent. So it all balances out. -

Angeline's is the kind of restaurant that you crave and are willing to bear 580 traffic and the difficulty of finding parking in Berkeley just to experience. The atmosphere is very laid back and the service is great. My absolute favorite dishes on the menu are the oyster po'boys and red beans and rice. It's an ideal restaurant to take friends and family who want some comfort food or something different from the usual Chinese, Mexican, Italian, and Japanese restaurants that dominate the Bay Area. Both of my parents are from Louisiana and I have traveled there quite a bit in my lifetime. Let me tell you that for a Cajun restaurant in California, this is as authentic as it gets! So come with a good appetite, maybe wear some stretchy pants, and enjoy the great food that Louisiana has to offer without even having to travel there!

I love visiting New Orleans and am in love with the cuisine of that region. Most places that try to do NOLA food fail miserably, leaving me wondering if they've ever even visited there. But Angeline's is not way off the mark. Is it as good as the real authentic deal? Hell no. But for those missing NOLA, it does a body good. My only real complaint would be the portion sizes were too small. But luckily I had the foresight to order 5 appetizers and 2 entrees! So if you're craving po boys, mufaletta, crawfish etouffee, beignets, fried oysters, and all that other good stuff. . .this is by far the nearest replication I've found outside of the south.

This place is quite adorable. It's a treasure in Berkeley, but as a recent UC Berk student, I've always known that this place is super popular. It is probably not within the price range for a college student, but when you start working... that's when you should come back!!!
All of the recommendations from people were fantastic. I loved the hush puppies and gumbo. The gumbo wasn't super spicy, it was just right. We also had the banana bread pudding, which was DEEEELICIOUS! The waiter recommended the extra $1 whip cream, it id help make the dish even yummier. :)
The WAIT for this place was ~1/2 hr, but it was a little hectic because people were waiting in the entrance while others were going in and out. I liked that they took down my cell phone number to call me when it was time for us to come back. There's no point of waiting in front of a restaurant in the freezing cold.
One thing I didn't like was that they forgot to bring our change, but maybe it was because we gave too much in the first place (with a bunch of ones that we could have exchanged).
I would definitely come back to this place. :) -

When I read sweet potato mash on the menu, I immediately thought AWESOME!
So I ordered the buttermilk chicken, something I'd definitely recommend. It comes with the sweet potato mash. Anyways, I felt like Anton Ego when he first tasted the ratatouille. If any of you have watched Ratatouille the movie, you know what I'm talking about! Eyes wide open, mouth dropping goodness. LOVED IT!
Hush puppies? DELICIOUS! Baby back ribs? WONDERFUL! The strawberry lemonade was pretty awesome too!
Anyways, I'm stuffed and ready for bed, but thanks for such a wonderful meal Angeline! I definitely will make my way here again! -

Recently, I came here again for dinner. I had hesitation from my last visit but couldn't remember why. Oh yeah, the food is mediocre and is nothing like authentic food from NOLA.
Boring, and flavor lacking. I'd say the pecan pie was delish but the mac-n-cheese, boudin and gumbo were three things: blah, BLah and BLAH.
The place is always busy so this strains the service. However, our server and the hostess were pleasant. We also had a reservation which they honored with on time seating and a sign on the table "reserved" --i did like that. The bathrooms are clean and spacious. The food is priced decent and the location is great.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Gayle and I had just finished seeing a most poignant "How to Write a New Book for the Bible" at Berkeley Rep on a pleasant Saturday Afternoon. At the end there wasn't a dry eye in the house, and when I asked Gayle what she wanted to eat, her immediate answer was: "I'm going for the meat!". I agreed that some good Louisiana comfort food would be an excellent choice. We also had a $40 gift certificate (thanks to Shauna) which would give us a few more menu options.
We walked in at a little after 4:30 and by 5:15, the place was packed. Gayle and I immediate compared this to our recent trip to Spain, where Lunch is at 2 PM and Dinner starts at ~ 9 PM. Our only quibble was that although the background music was well selected and pleasant to listen to, it was too Loud (and even in a crowded room). We got a nice seat at the window and at one point even saw one of the Stars of our Berkeley Rep production walking by.
At work, one of the Department Managers is from Louisiana and told me recently that Angeline's was the most authentic meal that he had enjoyed out of his home State. That's high praise. That conversation also got me thinking that it was time to give Angeline's another shot after a previous 3 Star Review a few years ago.
The first change (since last time) that Gayle and I noticed was a full menu, even in that in-between afternoon time. That gave us a chance to skip the previous deep fried choices and go straight to the Cajun Mixed Grill and Crawfish Etouffee entrees (respectively). Gayle loved everything (andouille sausage, baby back ribs w/house made bourbon BBQ sauce, and grilled shrimp) and commented that it was the most amazing potato salad she had tasted (short of the old Pedroni's from Petaluma recipe). She also demonstrated that this was a "lick the plate" moment. My dish was also excellent, with the right amount of spice and tasty green beans for colour balance. All this was washed down with Abita Beer (Turbo Dog for her and Jockamo IPA for me). And for dessert, we shared a luscious Creole Pecan Pie (with bourbon-vanilla whipped cream). We left the restaurant "Happy Full".
At one point Gayle asked me about often I ate this way during business trips to Baton Rouge and New Orleans. I replied that there's lots of these dining opportunities and that folks in those parts take their food seriously. However, weight control can be an issue as the portions there are usually larger. We also agreed that our service was excellent and that we would be back, and maybe with Darling Granddaughter and her order of Baked Mac & Cheese.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I love Angeline's!
Their food is really good but I'll go there just for the beignets. Just as good as New Orleans authentic ones. Best when served fresh but I've even had leftovers and toasted it...still good.
The beignets are piled with powdered sugar- so much that you can hardly see the tasty dough underneath.
Last time I came, it was close to closing but they still welcomed us in with open arms and seated us promptly. Service is great and atmosphere puts you right in the mood for good grubbin. -

Please make a reservation! You really don't want to wait an hour+ for a table in this very busy, smallish restaurant. Also, make sure your whole party is there at the appointed time or they won't seat you. Warning - you will have trouble finding parking in the neighborhood and it is seedy at all times of day. Homeless, junkies, pickpockets, punk kids, etc. Be alert and careful, OK? The food is worth it so don't let this discourage you.
This restaurant was popping! The atmosphere low key on the lights but loud on the noise but it was alright because everyone was in a fantastic mood, eating their phenomenal food. The bubbly atmosphere helped my party releax and have fun and it didn't matter if I laughed so hard I snorted.
We had a party of four which ordered eight items, not including numerous drinks. We had two appetizers, two deserts and four entrees. From gumbo to the fried chicken to the etoufee to the fried clams and deserts, we shared everything and all four of us loved everything we tried. No, it wasn't highly spiced but that it because they have to accommodate to the wider audience, not just the maniacs who eat habaneros and ghost peppers for fun! The food was authentic, flavorful and spicy in the right levels.
Even though this place was PACKED with lines of people waiting for a table, our server was fast and accommodating, even slowing down to explain his favorite beers on the menu and why he loved them. I can't wait to go back! -

I was happy to see this place busy that's usually a good sign. I was asked if I wanted to sit at the bar but I didn't want to so it took me about 10 minutes to be seated. I was very fortunate to wait such a short time because once I arrived many people were waiting behind me and my bf.
I ordered the buttermilk fried chicken and a strawberry lemonade. The fried chicken was crispy with flavor. I recommend eating your chicken together with the sweet potatoes, for some reason I thought it tasted amazing like that. The green beans were pretty simple they had parmesan cheese sprinkled on them. Buut the strawberry lemonade... Ah it was soo good I've never tasted such a delicious lemonade like this one! It had a unique flavor to it.
The only thing I didn't like was how when I finished my lemonade the waiter asked me what my finished drink was and I was caught up on my phone and I answered, "oh strawberry lemonade", and he didn't really ask me if I wanted more he just decided to bring me another glass I mean hey I did like it and all but I thought I should of at least been asked?
Anyways pretty good place, I completly forgot to order the hush puppies ill be back for that next time! -

Made reservation for 2 at Sunday 1pm. Good thing they told me ahead of time there is a 15 minute reservation hold as I managed to arrive at 1:15pm.
Only place in Berkeley where I've had delicious jambalaya. As a matter of fact, one of the only places that even serves jambalaya. Healthy sized portions with savory, rich chicken, sausage, ham. I also had the mac and cheese, which is pretty good, but not as good as the mac and cheese you can get from FIVE. -

Came here often in my last couple years of college and while I've always enjoyed the food (jambalaya, beignets, fried chicken, etc.), I never thought it was THAT good. The prices are decent for the entrees (10-17 dollars ish) but the appetizer prices are semi high. The jambalaya and fried chicken are usually my favorite and their mac n cheese is pretty tasty (although a bit pricey 5.95 for just a side). If you are ever in the area, try it out, but its nothing I would super crave.

I regret that I have not tried much here, but what I've had has been great.
I met here with my dad for lunch the other week: he ordered some fried oysters and sauteed brussel sprouts, I had the cup of gumbo with some swamp water to wash it down. The staff was very friendly and attentive (everything was always re-filled promptly), nor did they seem to mind that we lingered to chat for a bit after we had finished and paid for the meal.
I'm excited to come here again to try more things that I'm positive will be nothing short of amazing, like buttermilk fried chicken or jambalaya. -

I love love southern food! Just scrumptious!
Hush puppies are just that good here! It makes my mouth water just thinking about it!
Moving along, the jambalaya was so-so. It's good, but not great. There are better things on the menu like the shrimp creole - I really like the green beans they give, it makes me feel a bit more healthy.
Baby back ribs... what more can I say? It is simply wonderful... I usually don't eat pork or red meat but I had to just try it!
Beignets were also very good... However, I'm not much of a sweets person so it was quite hard for me to finish my portion of the desert. Take my advice, if you're full already, don't order desert. It won't make you feel good!
Why just four stars? The wait was just way too long! We waited for about an hour! I don't think any restaurant is worth that wait. I know that the wait is not the fault of the restaurant... it's its patrons what just won't leave! Just know that you are in for a wait if you decide to grab some southern food in Berkeley! -

I love Angeline's. Good food at a good price. But this time, I kind of felt I was being pushed out the door. You see, I started with a good house salad. Then an appetizer sized portion of the baby back ribs. At this point trouble. Just as I was in the middle of the ribs, a server plunked by main course of crawfish etouffee on the opposite side of the table from me and walked away.
So one plate or the other had to get cold. Why oh why couldn't they have taken the small bit of trouble to sequence my meal properly? No matter how good the kitchen, no matter how well-priced the food, if you throw everything at a single diner at once, you ruin the experience.
Having rushed to eat everything while it was warm, I ended up with a good case of heartburn.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »
