The Angel Oak is a must-see if you're anywhere in the Charleston area. Hell, if you're anywhere within 900 miles. I drove over 5 hours [after resting from a 30 hour cross country drive] this past summer solely to see this tree with my own eyes and fingertips.

It did not disappoint.

As the previous reviewer mentioned, this majestic and historic landmark is in danger due to the plague of our century: greedy developers.  The Angel Oak is over 1500 years old and the oldest living thing east of the Mississippi. Somehow, that's not enough of an accomplishment to stave off encroaching suburbia.

The Angel Oak is every bit as imposing and statuesque as it appears in the images.  It has been a presence for centuries: providing shade, a picnic area, a lovers' grove, a playground and sanctuary for the thousands of people who've crossed, clawed and climbed* its beautiful, formidable limbs.

Pay homage while you still can.

Or better yet, help your posterity have a chance to witness it, too: http://www.savetheange...

* It's not cool to do this anymore.  The tree has been weakened by several hurricanes and storm systems.  Looky but don't climby.

Worth the trip.  It's impressive, it's huge, and it's old, very old.  To me it's awesome to think about the history that has occurred while this thing has been around.

this tree is 1500 years old.* it's ancient and beautiful and spectacular.
i've never felt more at peace than i have here.

but the shady whores in charge (charleston city council) just voted to let some developers develop the area all around it, a sacred place full of other ancient oak trees. if you don't know the area, johns island used to be a beautiful, rural, african-american community. now it's been developed into suburbs for white people.
it doesn't matter if you live in charleston or never even heard of the place, if you have any part of a soul left, sign this petition to stop it:
