here is my first confession on yelp that will probably be the first of many- i am undeniably a sushi snob.

before the recession, my bf and i used to eat sushi at least twice a week. we roll our eyes and look down upon those poor, unknowing souls who only order california rolls. and during our meals, we critique each piece of nigiri according to the freshness, texture, butteriness, rice consistency/temp, and size. my bf also has the tendency to close his eyes while eating to savor each morsel while embarrassingly moaning in orgasmic pleasure. the louder the noises, the more buttery the fish.

and we both agree- angel fish is the best sushi restaurant in the east bay out of all the ones we have tried so far. we've eaten here a handful of times and the nigiri is always fresh and melts in your mouth, especially the toro sake, hamachi, and escolar. we even ventured to order chicken katsu once and it was perfectly fried, not too oily or heavy. the ambiance isn't too memorable, but who cares when you're having orgasms in your mouth.

i also recommend trying the takoyaki if  you haven't already. i used to eat them all the time when i lived in japan but it's impossible to find in the states. this is the only place i could find that serves it.

in conclusion- angel fish makes my mouth and belly do the happy dance.

After the mediocre experience that I had at Yoshino's I decided to put my faith in all my fellow Yelpers! I convinced my coworkers to go to Angel Fish rather than getting something in the Marketplace.

WOW! If you can only order one thing here make sure it is the Seared Tuna lunch appetizer.

The light sesame and vinegar dressing made this dish one of the best Sushi experiences I've had in a long time.  My mouth felt in love.   The tuna is seared and then rolled in sesame seeds. Sliced very thin and resting on a bed of spring greens. Beautiful presentation and light fresh flavor. Thank you...Yelpers.

Wow.

Judging by a lot of AF's reviews on here, people are easily razzle-dazzled by pizazz and showy presentations... But maybe all of this is just a distraction?

My experience at AF was.. "meh" / alright.... (but there's much better elsewhere).

One of the main problems I have with sushi/Japanese restaurants is its a lot of "flare" and ooh-ahh, but when you order that really expensive sushi roll or whatever it is that attracts you, when you get it its this little dingy nothing with cool decorations on it.

When it comes to EATING I'm a fan of good food that ISN'T a blatant rip off----Not special effects. AF doesn't give me what I'm a fan of.

AF's ambiance is nice, I'll give it that, but the service / managers there seem snobbish, bored, and fake.

The prices are (of course) too high for tiny portions with a lot of "flare."

The sushi was good, I'll also give it that, but bigger portions that are just as good can be found at a place that's a regular favorite of mine, like Kai's for instance (and no, not just because my name is Kai, either! lol)

One thing I especially hated: They serve you blazing hot tea in a ceramic cup (which sounds good, right? Hot tea's good, isn't it? ... But wait....) .... The problem with this is that the near boiling heat goes straight through the cup and into your fingers! So unless someone warns you in advance (which they don't), you nursing sore fingers the whole night.

*****TRUST ME ON THIS ONE! YOUR FINGERS WILL BE BURNED IF YOU IGNORE THIS WARNING!*****

I left disappointed, scarred (literally! j/k), and a little nauseous (at the snobbishness) & wishing I had stuck to the main island's sushi!

Do yourself a favor:

Don't make the same mistake I did!

Wowie wow wow wow!!! I was not impressed by the strip mall exterior but when the food came out I was speechless. It was soooooo good. Too bad I don't live in northern Cali so I could enjoy this restaurant on a weekly basis! Let's just say this, if this restaurant were in a strip mall in LA, this is what would happen.

It's success would move it to a newer, trendier location on 3rd street near the Beverly Center, or West Hollywood. It would replace homely hostesses for wannabe supermodels, probably half Japanese, half white...those damn gorgeous hapas. They would open up a bar and serve the latest "it" drinks mixed with a splash of sake. Rhianna or some sort of relaxing house music would be bumpin' in the background with dim back lighting. Cuz even the uglies look good in dim back lighting. Food would cost double what it used to, but that's ok cuz it's cool now. The waiters and waitresses would look busy but take forever to get your plates to your table. The check also takes forever and parking costs $20. Oh god, don't come to LA!!

OK, back to the food. We ordered the salad, some rolls, and the sashimi which was sooo fresh it was like butta. You could just tell it was THAT fresh. The texture was so smooth and soft and the fish just looked so healthy. It was saying, "eat me! eat me!"

San Fran ain't got nothin' on you Alameda! I LOVE ANGEL FISH!

This place in a non-descript strip mall anchored by Safeway, kind of near the Oakland airport.  There is plenty of parking.  The fish is very, very fresh - the uni was some of the freshest I've had, as was the albacore tuna.  The fried saba was on the bland side, but I guess that could be authentic Japanese style - we added soy sauce.  The sushi comes with a dab of wasabi on top of the rice, under the fish, so you don't really need too much else.  Someone next to me ordered what looked like the tuna salad, which looked quite good and he seemed to really enjoy it as he ate it in 5 minutes (yes, I timed him).  Service was prompt and polite - from the time we sat down and finished eating, it was less than 30 minutes - the food was so good that we just chowed down.  Definitely a place to check out if you're in the area.  They do not accept Discover.

I came here with a friend from out of town that loves sushi as much as I do so all is set to order everything and anything tasty on the menu. I'm pretty impressed with Angel Fish because they seem to have a large selection of specialized sushi. With our budget check unlocked, we proceeded to binge on nigiri after nigiri. Of course it didn't hurt to have a cute girl there since it seems like sushi chefs are always nice to the girls not to mention the extra perks from the chef. =D

The meal was euphoric and not much else needed to be said. I recommend to sit at the bar in order to get the 4+ star experience. The tables now seem to me a death hole for your tastes buds.

I LOVE sushi. If it were less expensive we'd eat at Angel Fish once a week. My husband and I have had sushi at several places in Alameda and the fish is freshest at Angel Fish.

We generally stick to nigiri sushi and the simpler rolls (tekka and negihama). Occasionally I order sashimi. Those applications really showcase the freshness, flavor and buttery texture of the fish. We also like an interesting fusion-type appetizer called...hmm, sushi tostada? tuna salsa?...that consists of fried triangles of wonton topped with maguro and avocado. Authentic? No. Tasty? You bet.

We've eaten there many times and never had bad service. Service is generally friendly and efficient, but even when the restaurant is busy - and therefore the service a little slower than  usual - we don't mind, we just sit and chat, drink unfiltered sake and anticipate our next taste experience.

I agree with the reviewer who compared Sushi House and Angel Fish. I've never understood the attraction of Sushi House. My second favorite restaurant here in town for sushi is Kamakura, and in fact that is where we go when we want a wider Japanese menu (usually due to guests who aren't crazy about sushi).

Angel Fish is located in Harbor Bay's shopping center near Island Drive and Mecartney. Don't let the shopping center aspect deter you - the place is great. And available parking abounds in the center's parking lot.

My sake nigiri was great.

I had to floss in order to get the gristle out of my teeth from my maguro sashimi.

It's close to work. I'll stick with salmon.

this place rocks!!!  1st time i went with my boss and its always a nice treat when you get invited for the 1st lunch...  food was great i got the assorted nigiri and all items were a nice surprise meaning better than what i was thinking and that was already at a high standard....  maguro tuna was fresh and the eel i rarely enjoy but it was tender and tasty.  The ice cream cake at the end was a nice touch on the house because the owners knew my boss....

2nd visit...

i got the charishi and it was tha bomb...  again everything was delish and i wish i had more money....  cant wait for next time will bring a client so i can expense it!!!

YUM!?

Yes, Angelfish is GOOD. If sushi were like fast food burgers, it makes Sushi House equivalent to McDonald's. And Angelfish like... In 'N Out. (Maybe an underestimation, but hopefully you get the idea). This restaurant scored extra points with me too because it's on BayFarm! Why did I always drive to Sushi House to get my rock n' roll fix when I could walk to Angelfish. It seems a random place for a sushi restaurant, but good Molly I love Alameda.

Angelfish is better than other Japanese restaurants because their food has this almost imperceptible edge - it stands out ever so slightly from the typical Japanese fare.  We ordered the Nasu-Den for an appetizer: baked eggplant topped with miso sauce. The presentation totally surprised me which was awesome - instead of peices of eggplant, it was literally a single slice taken from the entire vegetable with the miso on top. Now intruiged, I REALLY wanted to try it then and it was so good! (Although the miso probably would have started getting too salty for me if I were to eat most of it myself.)

The rest is history: the sashimi in the chirashi dinner was fresh, their tonkatsu batter comes out light and crispy-crunchy - none of that thicker, denser kind, and the alaska and rock'n roll were reallllly yummy. All of their crabmeat is real too, not the imitation crabmeat a.k.a. fish. Another thing I noticed was that the miso soup had noodles in it, which was different but still good.

I'm not sure what some people are saying about bad service, because our service was pretty good. Yah!

We've eaten at a LOT of sushi restaurants in the Bay Area and this is one of the best!  The fish is sooooooo fresh, prices are really reasonable, and the food is very tasty.  Small disappointment that a menu item (Tuna Salsa) was unavailable :0(, but that won't stop us from going back.

Good stuff:  Rainbow Roll, grilled Ika, chicken Kara-age, tuna salad, tempura ice cream!!!

The sushi are always fresh here.  The portions are reasonable, but it can get pricey especially when you're eating all the specials and seasonal stuff.

My favorite to start off is the Tuna Salad.  It's very fresh and topped off with some Ikura.  I'm a fan of their Hamachi Kama (grilled yellowtail collar).  It's not on the menu, so you'll just have to order it.

Staff is friendly and if you sit at the sushi bar, you will get good service.  It's definitely one of the best places I've tried in the East Bay.  It's a very  cozy atmosphere.

Oh yes, they also have a great selection of sake if you are a fan.  I also recommend trying their dessert.  YUM!

Happened to be in the area and have wanted to try this place out. Really enjoyed the fresh fish. We ordered sashimi for two and thought that was the true test to eat sashimi at an unknown sushi joint. We weren't disappointed with the quality of the fish. The presentation was excellent. Was surprised that no salad, miso soup, or even rice was served on the side with it though. Not sure if this was just an oversight or routine.
We went on to order a Rainbow roll and a couple of pieces of nigiri - all excellent, fresh and tasty.

We'll be back very soon.

I've eaten at a lot of pretty outstanding Japenese restaurants in my life, so as pleasant as this place was, I'm gonna have to say that it was pretty A-Ok.

Monday Night Dinner --

FOOD: To me, the perfect sushi roll consists of fresh fish that isn't padded with a whole lot of rice. And Angel fish has that down. We ordered the Rainbow Roll and Alaska Roll (avocado + salmon) and both were quit delectable. (RR = 8 pieces. AR = 6 pieces).

We also ordered the Grilled Mackerel dinner - which when it comes to fish, is probably among the best simply grilled fishes I've ever had. (The skin was nice and crisp, and the meat wasn't too dry as most places tend to overcook them).  The dish also came with some nicely marinated veggies, a little bit of potato salad, and a tiny bit of daikon which all amounted to a very nice presentation.

The dinner also came with a bowl of rice, miso soup, and salad (which was italian style -- had some cheese on it, which I found a bit strange for a Japenese restaurant).

Now at this point I will have to admit -- I am a huge fan of the bento box, so it's a bit disappointing to me when I come to a Japanese restaurant and one doesn't exist (even if the food is great). I've ventured to Japan where bento boxes do exist and are authentic, so I don't think I'm asking for too much...am I?

Anyway -- I would have liked that option.

SERVICE: Attentive and efficient, but not very personable. My glass of water was filled when it was half full, our food came quickly, and our plates were cleared immediately afterwards. Appreciated the efficiency, but a friendlier demeanor would have earned higher markings in my book.

AMBIANCE: Very romantic and modern. Dim lighting. Soft R&B in the background, sake bottles all around --giving you the illusion that there's a hidden bar somewhere (but sadly there is not).

PRICE:
$4ish - Wakame Salad (seaweed)
$10ish - Rainbow Roll
$8ish - Alaska Roll
$14ish - Mackerel Dinner

About the same price you'd pay at most Japanese restaurants.

All in all -- it was really good, but nothing too outstanding that makes it a unique experience from other great Japanese restaurants I've been to.

In the olden days of 2007 and 2008, I would give five stars to restaurants after having one great meal... and then come to find out, either on my next visit or from other yelpers, that it wasn't so five star, after all.

I guess sometimes I've just lucked out - caught the cook on a very good day.  Other times it was yelper error. You see, I can get all blissed out and when in that condition, I think everyone and everything is just soooo faaaaantastic.

If that's a hallucinogenic flashback, then I don't regret my youthful indiscretions one bit.

Whatever the reason, it's happened enough times that now I hold off.  I go back a second time and then decide: was it food heaven, beginner's luck, or the product of a euphoric haze?

I've been to Angel Fish four times now. Each time I've had a truly great meal. The seared ahi tuna appetizer salad, with its unique and delicious dressing, is a must. I also love their hamachi kama, the rock n roll and the caterpillar roll. The common denominator of the rolls being broiled eel and avocado...so good.

I've also ordered nigiri from their seasonal fish list. Quiz the server and she'll point out the five or six available that day.  Truly, these are melt in your mouth slices of heaven from the sea. Tonight I had hamachi nigiri and the fatty salmon, which has a much more appetizing Japanese name that I've already forgotten. Both were absolutely perfect.

I tried my niece's chicken teriyaki. I usually dislike teriyaki because of the sweet sauce. This sauce was great...not gloopy, and just a hint of sweetness amidst lots of garlic. The chicken itself was tender and juicy.   She also had the chicken katsu on a past visit and loved it. (This is a girl who begs to go to a Japanese restaurant for sushi, then eats one cucumber roll and orders cooked chicken.) sigh.

They don't fawn over you, but the service is good and the food is prepared quickly. In fact, you might want to order in stages if you prefer a leisurely pace to your meal.

The sushi bar seems relaxed and quiet. I've only eaten in the main room, which I think has bad acoustics. I had a very hard time hearing my niece over the din. Depending on the conversation, this can be very convenient. "Aunt Cathy, what's your number?" Oh how I wish she was talking about my phone number.

I'm not ready to have this conversation!! Help!

I could just start humming that anthem to personal accountability by Jamie Foxx and T-Pain *Blame it on the goose...got ya feelin loose, Blame it on patron... got you in the zone...*  But I prefer total avoidance. Hence:

"What?" "Sorry, no, I can't hear you." "YES, I did just text *TTYL* to you from across the table - I CAN'T HEAR A THING"

Angelfish lives up to the hype. The prices are reasonable, and the sushi is tasty.

A vast array of fresh fish. The Aji, was fresh and the fried bones tasted like a crunchy fish chip. Amaebi was so sweet, and the fried shrimp heads, well tasted like fried head guts, in a good way. Ankimo was excellent, and for the $8.50 price tag, you get a lot. Shiromaguro & Sake were super fresh as well.

The only downfall were the rolls. We ordered spicy scallop and a tempura roll and both were poorly executed. The rice tasted really gummy as well.

Next time I visit, i'll be sticking to the Sashimi and Nigiri.

My brother is a sushi chef and has been for years. I often eat to my hearts' content at the restaurants he works at and he makes me special rolls because I'm his favorite sister (well, I'm his only sister). I think I can say, I'm a bit of a sushi snob.

I know there are many sushi places that are amazing but it's a bit too expensive. I've been searching for a good sushi place that's reasonable priced. I think this is my place! The only downside for me personally is that it's a bit far. Yet, I think it's worth a drive so I'll like to make the drive there to get my sushi fix when I'm craving delicious, fresh sushi!

Ratings for dinner on a Thursday night:

5 stars for food - the sashimi is fresh and tasty; lobster roll is SO good! Other rolls are good, too, but lobster roll was my favorite - it has a nice kick but not overpowering if you like a bit of spicy; I was a bit worried it would taste like the spider roll which I've had at so many restaurants but it has it unique flavor. I'm not the biggest fan of unagi (b/c it's not raw) but my friend wanted to order a roll with it (I think it was the Rock'n'Roll?) so I tried it and I actually liked it! If a restaurant can make something that I'm not even a big fan of taste good, I think it's only fair I give them a 5 star. :) I think it was that the unagi was bbq'ed just right and they didn't overpower the roll with too much sauce like other sushi places do. The wasabi and giner is also fresh and tasty. They do add a lot of sesame seed to the rice than most japanese sushi places but I like sesame seeds so I had no complaints but something I wanted to note. The portions aren't huge but for me, quality is more important than quantity so I was pleased with the amount of food but if you're someone who values quantity, you might be a little disappointed. I think for the quantity though, the price seems right.

4.5 stars for menu - there aren't too much variety as far as rolls go but good enough for me; although I love variety, my main concern at a sushi restaurant is that they have good, fresh fish. They have a lot of nigiri options and other things; although I didn't try the grilled foods, another table near us ordered it and judging by how it looked (I like looking at other people's food), it looked good! I also like the menu because it didn't seem like a typical sushi restaurant menu but if you're looking for something like sushi house, you might be disappointed.

4.5 stars for service - attentive and they seem to know that good service matters to the customers. For me, the service I get can break or make my dining experience.

3.5-4 stars for the ambiance - the seating arrangement is fine but the decor and music was a bit not what I expected for a japanese restaurant but it can be because they're catering to a certain group of people? I don't know but it didn't suit me completely. It'll still be a good place for a casual date though - not fancy but pleasant and peaceful, not like some sushi restaurants where they blast music and the noise level is so loud. I would be happy if someone took me on a date here. :) I like that it's not a huge restaurant. It's not tiny either though.

3.5-4 stars for location - went at night and it was a bit difficult finding the place because it's in a plaza-like area that has more of an office feel to it. I think if I went during the day though, I might enjoy it a bit more because there's a small harbor-like place and other restaurants and stores. Most of the stores / businesses were closed so it didn't seem too lively and felt more dark. I went on a weeknight (Thursday); it might be a bit more lively during the weekend? Big plus is there is plenty of parking because there's a CVS and Safeway within the plaza. You can do your grocery and whatever you need shopping after! So awesome. It's probably not a bad location though for a restaurant.

I say, you should certainly give this place a try! It's on my A list and not many restaurants make it on that list - my friend can tell you how much of a foodie / food snob I am in general. I'm not picky with what I eat but I'm super picky when I judge on the food's quality.

Found this place on yelp randomly and was going to be in the area so decided to try it

Smalll, clean, and good service. Food is awesome, very fresh. We had:

Large tuna salad
amaebi
fatty salmon nigiri
spicy tuni maki
negihama maki
fried squid legs
special thomas roll: seared salmon with albacore, hamachi, avacado inside with green tobiko on top and spicy sauce
miso soup

everything was so fresh and very tasty. The tuna salad was huge and had ample slices of grade A tuna in it. the dressing was nice and light so we ate the entire thing. that salad was at least good enough for 4-5 persons.

The amaebi- came with the fried head- so yummy, only $7.50!
Fatty salmon was good too, but Ive had better that was more rich and creamy, but this was STILL good.
The squid legs were nice and crunchy and chewy, salted and fried perfectly.

The highlight was the thomas roll, per the recommendation of our very nice waitress and at $13.50 with 8 medium sized pieces, the quality and flavor was very very good. I generally stay away from the crazy rolls and sauces and opt for nigiri but we were in the mood for this and tried it and it was one of my favorites of the night.

Total bill $67 and we were SO STUFFED. A hidden gem in alameda and a good choice when in the east bay!

Angel Fish was once a favorite sushi spot for the hubby and me until service and food quality turned for the worse.  As a treat for my husband who had a bad day at work, I decided to pick up some lots of sake (fresh salmon) nigiri for dinner.  I called in the order and picked it up very promptly.  I came home and my husband brighted up when he opened the take out box filled with nigiri.  However, that smile soon disappreared once he took a bite.  They had given us smoked salmon instead.  My husband called Angel Fish to explain what happened.  Instead of being understanding or accomodating, they actually had the nerve to tell my husband that their sushi chef would never make such a mistake and it was actually fresh salmon, not smoked.  My husband tried to explain, but they cut him off and said he didn't know what he was eating.  Now, we're not sushi snobs, but after 10+ years of eating sushi, I think we could tell if it's smoked salmon or not.  My husband was so upset that he wanted to throw all the nigri back into the restaurant all over the girl on the phone.  -1 star

Well, after that miserable incident, it took us 2 years to come back to angelfish, and only because the other choices on the island for good sushi are minimal.  Angelfish has now redeemed itself back to 2 stars from our last visit, for way better service (a lot nicer) and still good sushi (once they get it right.)

Terrible food and service. I noticed they that they only have japanese servers they weren't very  helpful. I felt like my server only wanted to try and have me order more just to get a better tip. Very pushy, asked for water no such luck.

I do not recommend eating there.  Manager or owner was extremely rude.

This is my favorite East Bay sushi joint. The fish is always excellent, the prices are reasonable, the atmosphere relaxed, the wait never too long, the parking is easy, and the service usually good. My only suggestion: skip the sushi dinner combo, unless you like imitation crab.

Just OK.

I'm on the search for a replacement sushi restaurant. The owners retired at my regular spot and sold their business. So I've been searching Yelp reviews to find another. This in not that place.

I was very disappointed with the presentation and mass produced feel of my food. I ordered a spicy tuna hand roll and a large bowl of pre-mixed tuna appeared. It had a very over processed texture and was not to my liking. In the sashimi combo and chirashi I found the pieces of fish, while most were tasty, overly large and unmanageable. It seemed like the chef was being generous, but it made for a very difficult meal. The baby tako was the biggest shock. It was not a nice piece of fish, but a mixed salad that was overly mayonnaised. In my opinion, mayo does not belong in sushi. We were also given some kind of soup/stew that appeared to have everything but the kitchen sink. We ended our meal with the green tea creme brulee which was good but didn't make up for the rest of the meal.

I must say that I've definitely had worse and I'm probably just a sushi snob, but I'll leave Angelfish off my list.

I just stopped by here today because I was on the way to see Britney in Oakland and I had an hour to kill before the concert. When I get sushi I like a little bit of everything. Miso soup, edamame, salad, a roll or two and some sashimi.

The quality of fish here was excellent, but the edamame was overcooked (too soft) and cold, non salted. The miso soup was nontraditional, but still good. It had noodles and carrots added to the broth and tofu. The salad was NOT a japanese salad. It was caesar and didn't really fit in with the rest of the meal.

The service was good. The bill was almost $40 for just me. Go there to spend some cash.

There was no wait the night we stopped by so we were seated and ordering within minutes.  I wish there was a copy of the specials in the back of the restaurant, in addition to the front, because I saw some things listed on my way out that I might have ordered.  Oh well.

The seared tataki salad was really delicious.  The fish was fresh and the dressing light but flavorful.  The uni and the spicy tuna roll were good too.

We took kind of the long way getting here and I wasn't paying attention so I'll need to look up exactly where it is but next time I'm in Alameda, I might stop by again.

Best bang for your buck.

$5.50 each. happy hour that consist of your choice of TUNA SALAD, tempura, gyoza, spider roll, dragon roll, Large Beer and a couple others.

First off I'm not big on salad but here its a must have for me. The dressing is perfect the little eggs have great texture and the generous portions of tuna was everything i can ask for.

Thumbs up for being able to order take out for happy hour prices so you can take it home and enjoy your meal there.

This needs to be on travel channel or some kind of show feature great finds.

Come early cuz they fill up.

The first time I went, I got the Seared Tuna (pan seared then coated with sesame seeds and a vinegar dressing). I kept reading about it on here, and decided to try something new. The sesame seeds on the edges of each piece of tuna gave it that little kick of flavor in every bite. It was such a big portion too, I could barely finish it all, after having some miso soup and sushi. Well worth it.

Hells yeah.  This place was sooo good for lunch, that my boss and I went there for lunch and dinner on the SAME day.  The bento I had for lunch was perfect; grilled salmon, tonkatsu and maguro sashimi.  Everything (that needed cooking) was cooked to perfection, and the sauces weren't too sweet or strong.

We had some interviews todo today near the Oaktown airport, and I am still learning area(s).  I picked my boss up at the airport, and he wanted to go to a good sushi place.  Thanks Yelp (and Yelpers) for making me look like I know where I am.

It looks like this joint has a ton of real Japanese stuff, and the prices aren't that bad at all.  Service was fast, food was very fresh and had a nice atmosphere.  The lobster roll was pretty damn good, and I don't really like rolls.  Who would have thought Alameda had a great sushi place.?  Oh yeah---they had lots of Nihon-shu and Shochu as well, but I was still on-the-clock...next time.

Delicious sushi just melted in my mouth when I ate it.  The fish tastes so fresh and buttery.  I tried several types- salmon (fatty and not), fatty tuna, white tuna, yellowtail, albacore, spicy tuna roll, and spider roll- all so good that I had to keep ordering food (hence the extensive list).  I would have given the restaurant 5 stars except that it took a really long time to be served (how long does it take to slice raw fish? I think the waitress totally forgot about us because everyone else was being served), the rolls were tiny, and my husband and I were seated amidst several families with young children-totally deflated our hopes of a romantic date night.  Overall, its my favorite sushi place in the area and I will return again- not for date night though.

Good, and a bit pricey, but I guess that's what you're paying for, real quality.  I'll have to do a quick comparison to its cross-town rival Su$hi H0use over on Alameda "mainland."

I ordered the chirashi and right off the back, i noticed it was $4 more.  no prob, i expected that.  The miso soup was better (more hard ingredients besides the usual tofu and seaweed), but the salad was WAY lacking (a couple pieces of romaine for $1?)  The chirashi came, and it was in good presentation.  There was a nice variety of fish, and the egg was much more appealing than other places.  The "oilfish," as my wife ate it when i was looking, was "not as good as su$hi h0use."  The salmon was very flavorful, and when i ate the mackerel, the last piece of fish, it was savory, replete with its oily taste.

my folks had the udon (negative), and my sister ordered this grilled eggplant, but that was glopped with too much sauce.

The tab, for 5 people, was $100.  I was decently full, but i could tell my parents wanted more quality and quantity.  I was fine with my meal, but noticed that it was only one piece of each type of fish.  other places have always done two.

I recently went here for lunch with a friend of mine.

For being 1 p.m. the restaurant was empty. The Japanese woman with with the stringy blonde hair that works there seated us then disappeared.

I ordered the tuna salad. Big mistake. The tuna was hard like it had been frozen and strangely tasteless. The tobikko was also hard like it had been sitting in the salad dressing too long. My friend ordered the unagi-don and said that the unagi had been blackened, not seared.

When my friend mentioned to the blonde woman who mysteriously reappeared to take our plates of the state of the tuna, she didn't look at me but explained to my friend that it was fresh that day. *snort*

Basically, with horrible customer service and inconsistent quality of food, I will not be back here.

I'd have to say I'm a fan of Angel Fish

So every time I come here, I always get one thing and that would have to be the seafood salad.  I always get it to go though because it is always so busy but they are for a reason right.

Well the Seafood is very unique with all the different textures and flavors given to it, I love the taste as well.

the only reason i give it 4 stars is because of the prices but what can you say, its japanese food on Bay Farm.

Anyways 4 stars, catch you all later

For those who can't stand a) nonjapanese-run sushi restaurants and b) mayo or ketchup smeared funky rolls (yuck!!), this is (along with Kirala in Berkeley) what you're looking for. Not surprisingly, I have repeatedly failed to convince any of my Japanese friends to eat else where. They said: "Kirala and Angel Fish is where we eat Japanese food, period". Oh well..

The restaurant is actually run by a former Kirala chef, and the quality proves it. I have yet to experince bad food here. Everything was incredibly well-made, even something not so exciting-sounding like the Black Cod appetizer was actually incredibly and unexpectedly smooth, buttery (melt-in-your-mouth buttery), and delicious. And of course all the various sushi plates, chirashi, and unagi (yummi) are as solid as diamond!! Another surprise was the Green Tea Creme Brulee. It may sound a little funky initially, but you will not regret ordering it. I believe tonite we ordered our 14th in a row (after we promised to each other not to).

Want great sushi and Japanese food? Go to Angel Fish!!! Same Kirala's quality but a bit more affordable (though a bit farther away).

If I lived on this island and I can only choose one Japanese restaurant for sushi I think I'd probably choose Angel Fish.   It's sushi prepared by Japanese chef  ie. authenticity baby!

My favourite would be chirashi, try it out and tell me you love it too.  As for dessert, I remembered it's dark it's decadence and rich and creamy but not too heavy.... well, maybe you'll find out what it's called lol...

My parents have lived in Alameda for as long as I've been alive and I'm sad to report that we just recently discovered Angelfish, because man, we should have been feeding our Japanese food fix here all along!

For starters, its a Japanese restaurant run by Japanese people! Is that too much to ask for these days? I think not! In addition, the sushi specials are top notch without the hyped up price that most sushi places bring about. Last Saturday, we opted for the hamachi, scallop, salmon belly (truly melt in your mouth) and some of the best saba that I've ever had which even matched my amazing experience in Honolulu. The mackerel was so good, we had to place another order! The wasabi on the sushi was also a notable attribute because of its freshness and lack of astringency that most powdered wasabis bring about. Another bright spot was the tuna salad which was a delicious mixture of field greens, romaine, a soy vinaigrette and of all things, parmesan cheese.

I highly recommend Angelfish to all who are looking for a great sushi experience that is authentically delicious. The menu is great, the prices are fair, and best of all, for all us Alamedans, its in our backyard.

It's Wednesday night at 5:45pm and there's already a 30-minute wait.  Must be good.  We ended up only waiting for 20 minutes.  As soon as we sat down, the waitress asked us if we were ready to order.  We said no.  In the next 2 minutes, she came twice!!  I was a bit annoyed because it was beyond good service and we felt rushed.

I got the Tuna Salad which a lot of people rave about.  It was WAY too tart.  I don't know if it's the vinegar or lemon in the dressing but it is too much.  I do appreciate the huge slabs of fresh fish and generous amounts of tobiko and even the bigger fish eggs.  We also ordered the Alaska roll and the Spicy Lobster Roll.  Nothing spectacular but I really do think their key feature here is the fresh fish.  You can definitely tell.  I had a bite of my friend's black cod and it was nicely cooked.

My favorite item of the night was the TAKOYAKI!!!  For you unfamiliar folk, that's the round octopus dumpling.  The last time I had it was in Japan and this comes pretty darn close.  It's fried octopus in batter and topped with fish shavings, green onions, and sauce.  There's a dark, sweet sauce and also a mayo-based (maybe mixed with a little sriracha) sauce.  It came out warm--but not too hot--and very easy to bite through.  I would come back just for this.

The menu here is very simple and authentic.  No over-the-top rolls.  That's the way it should be.  I definitely recommend looking at the specials on the white board.  The last time I came to this plaza was for a bad haircut a couple stores down.  No to the hair salon but yes to Angelfish.
