There's a two drink minimum if you sit at a table. Of the eight of us, two don't consume alcohol so we went over to the bar and sat down.
Hubby and I both got the 312 in a bottle and later he ordered a couple of draft beers. We also ordered the bread pudding. Very good.
Listened to a set by the Ben Paterson trio for an hour. Bought a CD for $10. Then left.
Total bar tab $38.
One of the lady bartenders seemed a little spacey to me, but she managed to track our tab so I guess she only looked spacey. -

The performances were great! My tilapia piccata was fresh and just the right portion. I left full, but not comatose.
$5 entrance fee. There was also quite a wait, I don't know if it was due to holiday season, short staffing, a combination of both, etc. BUT, our sweet waitress offered us a free round (which we declined, not being drinkers. Such a tease.).
Tip: Make reservations! We were fortunate enough to walk in and get seating, but many others had to wait by the bar.
3 stars, because the wait really was absurd, but the show kept all happy. -

Contrary to my original thought, this place did not have a touristy feel to it at all. Warm, dim lights, down to earth ambiance. Make a reservation and have cash on hand to pay at the entrance (its free before 7pm). Dates, girls weeknight out, business outing, 'me time' all seemed to be having a good ol' time there.
We had bourbon drinks (tasty) and scallop appetizer with pesto sauce (solid). Service was excellent. Look forward to coming back for more. -

I think this place deserves a little more love. :-)
First off, it's a jazz club, right? So comparing it to Alinea is not really fair, people. I get it, the food is not top-notch, but I have yet to see a place that offers very good quality jazz music, excellent food, and at a decent price. If you find one - I swear I'm going to live there.
Yes, they have covers, and yes, they may run $5-$15 per person, but you get to listen to some really good bands. With good sound. And with nobody standing in front of your table blocking the view. That sounds like no big deal, but for some reason very few jazz (and music, for that matter) places get this right. So music-wise the place is really good.
Food wise, I find it well above average. I've been there four or five times, and tried a number of appetizers, salads, and main dishes, and they were good. My chicken was a little too salty once, but, again, at least for me food is not the main reason I go there. It's reasonably priced, and if I really want something nice, I'll go some place that is known for good food. As someone mentioned earlier, the cocktails are also decent. Again, not the best in the world (they don't have crushed ice), but well made.
I do not recall having any issues with the service, so I can't make any comments here. It's true though that on weekends this place is busy, so making a reservation in advance might be a good idea. -

Great Jazz bar. I was staying across the street for a couple of days last week and had the pleasure of enjoying a couple of Manhattans and listening to the evening performers. Be prepared to pay a typical $10 cover on most nights. The place doesn't seem like anything special or fancy inside..... but it is all about the music at Andy's. I would definitely go back if I was in the area.

Great little jazz club in the loop. Did not eat here, but the music is great and the drink prices are reasonable. We came in on a thursday night and it was packed. Got a table after about a 20 minute wait. Not too bad. I will be back

Writing a review for Andy's Jazz Club is not easy. They have good live bands and vocalists. Cocktails are above average level. HOWEVER the food and service were unpleasant in Andy's Jazz Club.
It was last Friday night.10 dollars cover charge for the Corey Wilkes live band that starts at 930.Almost all dining tables were taken around 8pm..We 2 persons didn't make any reservation for dinner,so gotta share table with others.
I was given a big dinning menu. Unfortunately, when I opened the menu,I saw red wine stains right away....The menu list is long. We ordered Teriyaki Steak Tips and Malibu Shrimp for appetizer and Salmon Bruschetta for main.To my super big surprise, after a short while, the waiter passed us main course without any appetizer being served. We asked him " so where's the appetizers" He was like" oh?really?" Then he went back to Kitchen to bring out the 2 appetizers. We would not complain if just like this. But he afterwards spoke to us,"sorry guys, I think you want to eat main before appetizers". I thought to myself" Is it special care to us???" He just made his apology sound sorta hilarious and ridiculous.Woa...
Despite this Jazz place is not known for food,I thought they have a certain standard of food. The fact is low standard.Presentation of each dish is far from nice. The sweet sour sauce on the Malibu Shrimp tastes too strong, which totally covers the flavor of coconut rum in the shrimp. Shrimps were fried so-so.Neither tender or crunchy. As for teriyaki steak tips, they gave too much teriyaki sauce to the small bites of steak.I felt like I ate only sauce. Not any steak flavor.
Speaking of main Salmon Bruschetta, the so-called atlantic salom is hard as a rock.Rice on the bottom kinda tasted like porridge.....Very unpleasant dinning experience...
After dinner, we moved to a small table where is closer to stage. We ordered their signature cocktail Blackberry Magrita. Although the food was kinda shitty, cocktail was actually amazing. The live band came to stage on 930sharp.Whole atmosphere was good.
The bill was over 100 dollars.I can't say its expensive. But the overall dinning was not worth this amount. I'd consider not to go to Andy's Jazz Club if I wanna go to a Jazz bar next time. -

This place looks so cool and any live jazz is a treat (unless you walk in Ornette Coleman expecting to hear Dave Brubeck, but I digress). Is it so much to get a little service.
My three-tiered experience here went as follows: Enter, greeted by sweet old lady who may have worked there for decades. Good start. Walk up to the actual hostess, a younger girl to whom this was just a job. That's cool and all, but don't treat me like an idiot for asking for a table. I can tell the bar's full... it's just over there and it's not *that* dark in here. Got my table after the hostess took a stroll around the bar to double-check my assessment. Then the wait... the band plays the first song. No sign of a waitress. Second song, good band. Lousy waitress... wherever she is. Oh, there she is! I'll have a Captain and Coke and I hope to see you again in less than five minutes.
This was pretty much the theme of the evening. Good entertainment and awful, awful service. I actually have to drag out the old warhorse of customer dissatisfaction, "I watched them stand around and ignore me." Probably the worst wait service I've ever had anywhere. And for a place that could be so cool, that's a huge let-down. -
Review from Ryan C.
I was taken here for my birthday and was pleasantly surprised. Previously, I heard that "it's a so called blues place for tourists." OK, then. Walking in, it was a bit crowded but I didn't feel overwhelmed by it being crowded. Honestly, I thought the lay out and set up was better than other places I've been. There really isn't a bad place to be inside. Also, unlike other places, it wasn't soo loud to the point of not being able to enjoy it. I know, I'm starting to sound like an old man. The volume was right.
The night we went, Guy King was playing. I had never heard of him and didn't know what to expect. Actually, he was quite impressive. Impressive enough that I caught him at another place and would go back to see him play. Andy's introduced me to a local blue musician, which is good.
There was a cover, which is based on the artist or group playing and the price of drinks were same as every other place. Grab a seat, chat with a tourist and enjoy the music. You'll have a good time. -

I've been here a few times, with mixed experiences, but my recent visit was fantastic. There was a large group of us, and they managed to accommodate us all at a table, where we had a great view of the band. There was a cover charge, but the musicians were top-notch. My friends from overseas were all thrilled to get a real Chicago jazz experience.

It is very casual jazz bar as it has its own history for a long time.
Don't expect something fancy mood in this performance-oriented bar.
Haven't tried the food, but the cocktail was decent. -
Review from Bruce B.
It really all depends on who's playing and where you sit. I think Andy's is a good jazz club with a decent sound. The service was pretty spot on. I thought the waitress took care of me well. Andy's is a decent place for a date if you both enjoy jazz. The drinks are served strong and the ambiance is just what you would expect.
I'm giving Andy's three stars, because I'm not sure if there's anything that separated them from the others. I enjoyed the being there, but I didn't think the band was great. After paying a $20 cover and $10 dollars per drink, I expected something unique. Instead, I got the same old jazz club, which is fine, and that's why it's 3 stars. It's a solid place, but kind of blends in with the other jazz clubs. -

Pretty cool jazz place
Pretty crowded at the 9pm timing but absolutely dead at 12.
Very expensive with $15 cover
Drinks Are normally priced- don't get the effen frenchy tasted like cough syrup
My main issue is that I understand these places are crowded and the setup should accommodate for flow of traffic but seriously this place is hardcore at maintaining the setup- withing seconds of bringing another chair to our table- the hostess asked us to desist. She was nice about it but it was still annoying.
Wouldn't come back again to be honest. -

We LOVED Andy's!
The music was fabulous-we purchased two CDs from the Shawn Maxwell quartet-and the seating at the bar provided a nice view of the stage.
The bar staff were attentive and speedy. The volume was just right. The cover charge was $15 a person, but if you time your visit for a weeknight, it will be cheaper.
Drinks were expensive, but we ordered expensive liquor! If you stuck to well drinks or beer, you cold probably get out of there for under fifty bucks for two.
We will definitely be back! -
Review from Mahsa T.
It was an off-peak night when I went but I still liked it, in fact I probably liked it even more because it wasn't loud and crowded and I had a place to sit, was able to have a conversation, and enjoy the band. It was my first time here and the place was smaller than I thought it would be. Ten dollar cash cover at the door (after 8:30 pm) Sunday through Thursday and $15 Friday and Saturday. Cover is a few bucks less before 8:30 pm. They have a list of the showtimes posted on their website.
Andy's doesn't have the same great vibe and atmosphere as the Green Mill but I still had an enjoyable experience here. The service at the bar was excellent and they had a good drinks selection. Great live jazz in the city--what more could you ask for?Listed in: I Do More Than Just Eat

Review from Marie B.
Friend wanted good (live music) AND good food in the same venue. I advised I was not entirely sure I knew of such a place existed. He insisted Andy's was the place. Too bad we didn't have a bet on it.
First, the experience was NOT bad. To the contrary I had a very good time. The music was phenomenal! Jazz great Von Freeman was playing...that in itself was enough to make this a great experience. BUT, remember...the discussion was a GREAT live music venue AND great food.
So, we have established the entertainment more than exceeded my expectations. Now, let's talk about the areas for improvement.
The food. We ordered the Tenderloin Bites and a basket of French Fries. The sauce on the Steak Bites was much too salty and was a cross between a demi glace and BBQ Sauce. When they said "bites" they weren't kidding. it was tiny one inch pieces of steak on a similarly sized piece of bread. Odd. I do not remember the cost, but probably a bit pricey.
The fries were a huuuuuge disappointment. I know, how can one fail at making fries, but you can! These were standard, run of the mill restaurant supply, generic fries...that had not been salted or fried in a good oil. Mediocre at best.
Speaking of mediocre....the service was just that. Maybe 'cause they automatically add the tip to your bill? No motivation...
Lastly, a topic that has nothing to do with the rating....but in all fairness, I should share. Since my friend...date...wore a sport jacket and nice trousers, I assumed this place was casual chic and I got all dolled up. I walked in a quickly realized it was an unnecessary exercise!! Jeans and a cute top would have been more than acceptable!
I will definitely return, but I will have dinner beforehand and I will wear something comfy! -

You can always expect great music at Andy's. It is a very nonsense type place when it comes to that.
Drinks and food: We came here for after dinner drinks and dessert. The chocolate cake was moist in the middle (the edges were a little tough, like its been sitting in the open for a day). The consensus from the rest of the group that drank alcohol was that they gave you house liquor when you ordered something top shelf. I can't speak to that... They have a drink minimum on weekend nights so beware.
They get 4 stars since their primary purpose is music and they do it well. -

Great music, great food ( crab cakes are delicious, pizza is surprising good especially the margherita pizza) great drinks and service. Had our company holiday party there, it was fantastic! Prices are good for live music, food, drinks and a closed event in River North.

Music was the Jordan Baskin Trio on a Sunday afternoon- The place was not very crowded, and we wanted drinks and appetizers; but were made to sit at the bar while most of the tables in the venue sat untouched. Due to the support poles scattered through out the place, seating at the bar does not make for very good viewing of the band playing on state.
The music was fantastic -no complaints there. Service was pretty decent and drinks were made to our liking - if expensive for what they were. The food was definitely not that amazing and there was NO QUESTION that the food was overpriced considering portion sizes.
Cover was $5 for the early Sunday show- and felt well worth it.Listed in: Chi-Town

I'll preface this review by saying I'm not a jazz aficionado. I listen to the music and I certainly enjoy it, but if you asked specifics about trios, groups and such I'm not your gal. I can tell you I've been here twice, had very different experiences both times, but certainly enjoyed myself.
A little touristy? Sure. The location is prime for tourists coming from hotels especially during a large convention. Come on a Friday or Saturday night and you'll be lucky to grab a spot at the table...or somewhere comfortable to stand for that...come during the week or on a Sunday? You'll have a different experience. You can enjoy the music and still have a fairly intimate conversation too.
The cover at the door is cash.
Not sure about the food here, but I'd definitely recommend it for a drink! -
Review from Mindy S.
Sunday night + half price cover ($10) + jazz jam session + fun cocktails = excellent time at Andy's and I can't wait to go back. We shared a few items from the menu (calamari = good, tenderloin bites = very good, pizza = ok, caprese salad = good). I think next time, we'll be sure to have a more substantial dinner first, but it's good to have the food option. The drinks were definitely much better, and were reasonably priced as well.
Andy's is certainly a well-established jazz venue that should not be passed up. -

My wife and I went there for our second jazz club experience. Excellent musicians, elevated stage was easily visible, and the acoustics were very good. No valet isn't a big hassle because you can valet at Shaw's next door (12 bucks), but they close at 11:30 and Andy's closes at 1:30. Tip for dinner is automatically included which I'm never a fan of, but the service was very good. Some people were dressed up, others in jeans. Highly recommend dinner reservations so you can get a table which we did. Problem is that dinner tables can only be reserved for 2 hours, so they can ask you to move to the bar if they need the table. You never know IF they need it, so it was a little uncomfortable. Last issue is there's a 1 hour break between bands, so from 8:30PM to 9:30PM no live music and that cuts into the 2 hour table time. After 8:30 the cover goes up from 10 to 15 bucks, so plan accordingly. Overall, a very good experience and we'd go back there again.

I've had several fun evenings at Andy's, followed by one mediocre evening which was the last time I have been back.
Andy's features excellent jazz acts up close and personal. The food and drinks are solid, but certainly not the reason to go. Since the food and drinks are priced to support the live music, I've found a night out with a date usually runs to about $100, plus covers.
Last time at Andy's our waitress was terrible, first taking 20 minutes to bring us menus and then interrupting us literally every five minutes the rest of evening to ask if we wanted anything else. No, thanks, we're listening to music -- and you're distracting us.
I also found that Andy's had added an 18% tip to all parties -- and we were two people. Sorry guys, not cool. Your waitress got 10% because she detracted from our evening.
So Andy's moved down my list of favorite nights out. I'm not saying I won't be back, but I'm not rushing for the door either. -
Review from Rob R.
If you believe that decent jazz can come from working musicians sustaining themselves only by love of the music, you'll understand the reason why this intimate and laid-back venue forced out its higher profile but far pricier neighbor, Jazz Showcase. Many of the bands are local, you're likely to hear familiar jazz standards, and cover charge is typically only $5.
Like a lot of places downtown, the food can't compete with the increasingly higher standard found in neighborhood bars and Chicago's ethnic enclaves. But the dinner menu is fairly decent, with a few fish or pasta entrees worth trying.
The absolute best steal in all of town is the Friday lunchtime set, no cover, like a good old-time radio show each song is introduced by a story or a bad joke.Listed in: Small Music Venues

Review from Alex F.
I'm giving Andy's 3.5 stars and rounding down to 3. Yelp community leaders, can you please allow us to award half-stars? Everyone wants it.
Anyways, I rank the Green Mill slightly ahead of Andy's because although both specialize in featuring our local musicians, I feel the quality is just a touch higher at the Mill. And I prefer its more music-centric atmosphere. (We're not even talking about the Showcase here, folks; there's no comparison.)
Andy's does have good local acts and reasonable cover. I specifically recommend going to see trumpeter Corey Wilkes, because he's a great musician and also happened to go to my high school. I've never eaten at Andy's (most jazz clubs don't even have a kitchen) so I can't comment on the food, and there's nothing particularly impressive about the service. Overall though, Andy's contributes something nice to the Chicago jazz scene.Listed in: Jazz Clubs

I've heard about this place, but until last night, had never been.
Great atmosphere and overall vibe. I like visiting a place where you can sort of sense the adventures that have surely taken place over the years.
We arrived a few minutes before 9pm and there was only a $5 cover, which was nice. I think that's a small price to pay for a different experience. Usually when I've gone to hear jazz in the city I've hit the Green Mill or this other place near Fado that I am spacing on right now.
I like the way jazz audiences respect the musicians and the music and they definitely did last night at Andy's. Some posters have mentioned the smokiness, but I didn't find it too bad. Of course, by the end of the night, I was totally participating in that, so there ya go.
Looking forward to returning... -

Went to Andy's last night and had a blast. The cover was $10.00 for an artist I did not know but I do support the arts and after hearing the quality of talent would have paid $20.00. This is strictly jazz and blues so not appropriate for everyone. You can smoke which is a plus (where are we? California?)! The staff was very nice including my waitress. Wish I could comment on the prices of the drinks. I had a few too many bourbons last night so I have no clue what my bar bill was.
The space is nice and spread out, and with a proper reservation we had no issue getting a table. The bar is pretty big so even if you dropped in for a quick drink you should have no issue bellying up to the bar. What I like is that there is live entertainment every night starting around 5pm. As a loop worker this is a sure hit for a good happy hour, or if I am entertaining clients.
I'm very hung over from my experience at Andy's so I give it 5 stars. -

I have been to Andy's three times. I am always surprised by the number of people that haven't been to jazz clubs - with the live music, full bar and kitchen, its a good second or third date spot . . . . or a nice place to try something different.
POSITIVES
* The music was a 4 to 4.5 on the first two visits, and a 3 on the third
* Full bar and kitchen
* Easy to get a table if you call a day in advance - and all three times I have had a table in the middle area of the room, perfect distance from the stage
* Good location
* Low cover charge for above average music
NEGATIVE
* On all three visits, the food was a 2.5 to 3 (at best), but they charged at a 4 rate. Eat an appetizer somewhere else first.
* On all three occassions, the service was very slow.
* The last time I was there, they added 18% gratuity to the bill - even though it was only me and my girlfriend! I upped the tip to 20% anyway. When I asked the hostess why they would add gratuity to the bill for just two people, she replied that last year they had a lot of "foreign tourists" stay too long and not tip. . . . Perhaps it was really people that were unhappy with the waitress' service???
In any event, because the negatives were so high on the last visit, I will probably not go back again, unless I sit at the bar. Had my first two experiences not been better, I would have given Andy's a 2 rating. -

Aliso Viejo, CA
This is a fun casual spot and a great place to kick back and hear some live music without it overwhelming the place. The bartenders were nice and it wasn't too crowded.
My two main complaints were that 1) the cover seemed a little steep considering the size of crowd (indicating popularity) and the lateness of the hour, and 2) I prefer other types of jazz, and while this was enjoyable, the frenetic saxophone was a little off-putting.
At the end of the night, though, it was great to kick back, have a conversation, grab a great glass of wine, and watch some entertaining live music. -

Boyfriend met my parents here- first time: This place is easy to get to, and parking on the same block is convenient. We went at 5 p.m. on Saturday when it opened, and got a great table. (We had no reservation.) White table cloths for the tables, with candles on each table, and a large bar for those not dining.
Jazz band started playing at 6. No cover fee for that show but I think there was for the 9 p.m. Saturday show. Place stayed relatively empty until about 6:30. There was a 2 hour time limit on our table, and a 2 drink per customer rule.
But the service was good, music was fun, wait staff friendly, crowd was in their 30s to 50s. It was a very unintimidating place. Menu prices were reasonable. I would definitely go again. This is a fun place to see live music, and a good place to take out-of-towners. -

I have been in town for business for the last few days and staying nearby, so I went with my coworker to Andy's to hear some jazz , dinner and a few drinks.
The jazz was great. There were two bands on when we were there. One was a 3 piece band, which was more mellow and one a very diverse band that played traditional jazz and some Japanese folk music.
The food was good and the waitress did not try to push us out after we finished.
The place filled up on a Monday night and if I am in town again, I will come back. -

This review may be out of date because I stopped going here a few years ago because of the smoke.
But I used to love the joint. If you want a real saloon with great Chicago jazz, this is the place. It has decent bar food too. But I used to go for the music. If you love live jazz, this place is a must. Lots of times visiting musicians sit in here too. I took Milt Hinton's picture here. He was quite amused and I found out later he was a serious photographer himself.
I am an artist and have spent many happy hours in here sketching the musicians and also taking pictures for reference for future paintings.
Milt Jackson and Ray Brown, both gone now, were two of my favorite jazz players. One time when I was still driving cab I wanted to go see them but felt that I had to work. They were playing down at the Jazz Showcase, which at that time was still at the Blackstone hotel.
I passed by Andy's in my cab and there standing in front were Milt, Ray and Joe Segal, the owner of the Showcase. I took them all to the gig and naturally they encouraged me to come and listen, which I did. How could you refuse after such a touch of synchronicity? -

The introduction of the $10 cover in addition to a drink minimum sucks. Not to get all nostalgic, but...I remember when there wasn't a cover at Andy's and it was the place to see uninhibited jazz, drink great liquor, and eat amazing food. Alas, it's become a bit too touristy for me.
The music lineup is dependable; you'll never sit down to a hack croaking his way thru Coltrane. Several musicians really got there break at Andy's and still have regular showcases there. Go there on a weeknight for drinks after work. Stay away from Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. -

Andy's is old school; decked out with old Chicago Jazz Fest posters from way back when and other memorabilia covering the walls. You sit down at your own little roundtop with a cocktail waitress at your service. I think there is a 2 drink minimum during performances.
The entertainer the night when we went in was a gutsy blues singer with a gangster band. With a $10ish cover and $5-7 drinks the night ended up being worth it. Good times had by all. -
Review from Lorna S.

Oh Andy, why was I seated at a table with an obstructed view in such a tiny place? I have a sore neck from having to peer around the post to see the band (which was good by the way). The two drink minimum was acceptable, and the food was not too bad. I just would have liked to have been able to have full view of the band. This place seems to be crowded most of the time, so getting a table on a weekend night at 9 or later might be an impossibility.
I like the atmosphere, and don't see it as pretentious at all. I would go back, but maybe when I don't want to sit and have dinner. I will go for a couple of drinks and stand at the bar for a few. -

Disclaimer, we didn't partake in their normal menu and much of their normal drink selection or even the music. My rating is based on their service (very good) and the decor/ambiance (also very good). I'd expect that if we actually saw the jazz trio that was setting up as the wedding was ending we may be able to give it 5 stars.
Very classy joint that was apparently a legitimate jazz venue with a scene! A novel place to have a wedding reception, but the next time we're in town, we'll go here for the jazz:) -

We had a great time at Andy's on a Tuesday night. The jazz trio was much better than we expected, but the big surprise was the food. The appetizer sampler was amazing. Our entrees were all great, and even the dessert blew me away. I was definitely not expecting good food from a jazz club. The biggest drawback of this place is that there are these column supports sprinkled throughout the place that blocks the view of the stage. Also, the food prices are pretty high.

Review from Deana L.
Good musicians, easy listening, expensive drinks.
It seems almost like a neighborhood jazz dive bar. Wait, maybe that's what it is...hmmm...
It is a non-pretentious date (not first or second), early-40s up place. We didn't have the food, but people seemed to eat. Not sure if they enjoyed because I was more focused on the musicians.
There is a 5 dollar cover on a weeknight (we went on Thursday I think) and a 1 or 2 drink minimum to sit at the tables, but it's worth it to hear some live jazz.
