My favorite grocery store ever! Miss this one a lot! I make a stop here whenever I'm in SFO. Makes me wish I still live in the city :(
Anyways, their choices of fruits are amazing. Fresh and nice to the touch-firm and healthy looking.
Wines galore! Imported pasta heaven. Talk about their deli section. I love their tuna sandwich here. Thick and fresh! Yummm!!
Parking is somewhat of a problem sometimes but it's worth it.
Pricey? You can't put a price on your food and no place compares to this Andronicos. In this case not even the Andronicos in Berkeley.

Pay way too much for way too little.  I can understand paying more for organic produce, meat, and premium products.  What I do not understand is paying more common items.

The first time I shopped here I picked up some beer for a party and the pricing was about the same as a liquor store, so not as cheap as safeway but not horrible.

The second time I went I bought prepackaged lunch meat, prepackaged Kraft Swiss Cheese, a package of sandwich buns, and a few CLIFF bars and a I spend $35.  Way too much.

From now on I will only go here for an emergency.

Let's get it out of the way: yes, Andronico's is a premium, higher end market, so they are typically going to cost a bit more than some of their competitors.  That said though, they do offer so much more than your neighborhood market.  On the whole, their selection on fresh meats and seafood is of a higher quality, and what they have available to their shoppers is hard to match.

With their remodel, they now also have a hot food/salad/soup bar for a quick meal on the go, in addition to a deli and sushi counter.  On top of that, they have a small olive bar (not a fan of olives though) and a section devoted to cheese and wine, where you can even do some wine tastings.  And speaking of their wines, they have a fantastic selection, from reds to white, expensive to "cheap".  To top off your meal, there's also a dessert counter, with a wide array of candy, pies, and other sweet desserts to choose from.  The fruit tarts and cheesecake have been quite delicious from previous experiences, and convenient for a pick-up to a potluck.

Don't get me wrong...I'd still opt for Safeway or Lucky's to get my staples and regular items unless they were on sale here or I was in a pinch.  But I would certainly come here to pick up my premium items, or things on the go.  Plus, it's pretty impressive that you can pick up a full course, ready to eat meal all in one stop.

i hate it when i have to shop here for anything but meat. it is sooo overpriced and their selection of nuts, grains and tofu is poor and no artichoke flour pasta but that's not the kind of place it is.  The meat is good and  actually really good prices on organic chicken and grass fed beef. ive never ventured into the gourmet salts, but they have a pretty beautiful selection of them here.

I lived across the street from this store for 5 years and went there nearly every day. That was a long time ago and I have fond memories of the wizened old locals who ate deli counter meals  in the little dining room adjacent to the north entrance. It was just a few tables and a dusty old ficus tree, but a group of stalwart regulars were they most every day.

There were frequently  highly-sought-after marzipan pigs in the bakery display. I saw the same ancient women taking away small white paper bags of these marzipan pigs countless times. Sometimes the pigs were pink and sometimes they were green, but they were always marzipan.

It became kind of a thing with me, those marzipan pigs. I imagined starting a band, The Marzipan Pigs! We would be HUGE... and delicious.  Headlining Tonight at the Warfield, it's The Marzipan Pigs! The Pigs would tour with Primus and The Residents and play the Fillmore every Halloween. It would be a San Francisco tradition!

But, back to Andronico's: the store always had what you needed, and the quality was above average for most things and WAAAAAY above average at the meat counter. (One noteworthy standout was that working in the butcher shop was Bobby the Butcher. Bobby was, and I assume still is, a huge Prince fan and was associated with the Prince fan club. He threw these massive Prince parties in various locations  in downtown SF, where all of these incredibly attractive people would show up and dance for most of the night while Prince music was blasted and Prince videos were projected around the space.  These were great parties.)

The prices were also a little above average, even way back then.

Recently, I went to revisit Andronico's after many years of having not been. Wow! There has been a major redesign of the store. It looks like a Hollywood set of the Fanciest Supermarket Ever.  All of the displays have been fancified beyond my wildest imaginings. The produce displays are astonishingly beautiful.  The deli has grown to become this monstrous, gigantic thing, with all kinds of hot and cold selections and an overabundance of fancy sandwiches. Muffaletta? Cuban pork sandwich? Horatio Alexandrian Remulade Olive Loaf on Foccacialini? (I made that last one up)

Andronico's is now super fancy, very nice, and you can't deny, very pricey. There's a lot of good stuff here, but it doesn't seem like your everyday supermarket any more. I will very likely go there more frequently for lunch, however, to try out some of the deli offerings. Get something from there to go and then stroll into the amazing, best-ever Golden Gate Park to eat. That sounds good.

On my way out, I passed by the bakery and was crushed to see: no marzipan pigs.

I was expecting a Greek/Italian deli style supermarket, but I have to agree with others- Andronico's is barely above a Albertson's or Randall (third coast!!). The produce was outrageously expensive despite being non-organic ($3.99 for grape tomatoes? I can get the same amount, but organic, at Falletti's). Cheese was absurd- $4.99 for a regular sized container of Chevre. Dorothy we're not in Texas anymore!

I took my time walking around the store to see if there was some other favorite item I can't get at the Asian markets or Falletti's- I only found ice cream, Lundberg rice cakes (semi reasonable price of $2.99) and lots of meat choices. I don't cook meat so there you go.

My other gripe- lots of coffee beans sold, but the only grinders were earmarked for certain brands- whats up with not having a general grinder for the other ones?

They have a cute home section, including Le Creuset- a sign of their target demographic?? The baked goods looked promising as well, but were cleaned out by the time I got there at 9 pm. The store is open late (10 pm) so I would go only go there if I can't find what I need late night at Walgreens.

While this place advertises itself as a higher end gourmet supermarket, there are plenty of reasons why it is just an overpriced Albertson's.  I can get fresher seafood and meat at Safeway.  Most of the pastries in the bakery are dry and have no density, I am pretty sure their baked goods are bought from Costco.  Most of the packaged items off of the shelf are the same brands you can buy at any major grocery retailer, not gourmet and not organic.  At the very least I would expect to be able to buy a decent coffee bean from a store like this.  The selection coffee selection is very limited, including Folgers, Starbucks, and something called Ben's of Omaha, nothing Italian.   If you want to pay a high price for regular food items go to Andronico's.  If you actually want fresh, gourmet or organic food items go somewhere else.

I love shopping here.

This is our neighborhood grocery, and in this current recession, the Huz-band & I have decided to whip out all our cookbooks for those nights we're not wining and dining one another in all these Uber-faboo restaurants in San Francisco.  Out comes the All Clad, and we set out to Andronico's for the necessary ingredients.  And they rarely  fail to have exactly what we need.  Hard to find ingredient?  Check here first.

Wonderful butcher shop, knowledgable staff, great produce, deli and cheese sections!  Fresh flowers everywhere. They have an impressive wine selection, a dairy wall that almost runs the length of the store, fresh breads delivered daily, and plenty of free sample tchotchkes to keep one entertained while they shop.

Andronico's has very helpful and friendly staff.  The last time I was here, Bernie was so nice to show me where the cookie cutters were and knowledgeable about what and when they have in the store.  As she had a soon to be kindergartener at that time also, she gave me an excellent suggestion on how to make my upcoming kindergartener's lunches fun - bento boxes.
It is so amazing at the specialty selection it has on its shelves.  I usually come here when I need  a special cut of meat as its meat is fresh.  In addition I always buy Clover, organic milk as my former, co-worker's family owns that dairy farm.

First let me just get this off my chest: ITS 2 BLOCKS FROM MY HOUSE. So its quite like a giant 1/2 block sized crack rock that I just can't say no to no matter how much they charge. I mean, this place is soooooo expensive. Its ridiculous that I even still go there, but letting the prices go; its niiiiiiiice. I mean they have plenty of hippy-tofu-meatless-undairy stuff that I love. The produce always comes through when I'm in the mood to walk over and make a spur of the moment feast. The meat and seafood are also amply stocked and fresh. Occasional specials make me feel a little better about my way to often trips.

All in all, they have great goods, but charge a little too much. Their fresh food, salad bar, and hot food bars are all good as well. Oh and the olive bar is divine...

DO NOT BUY THE ANDRONICO'S CHICKEN!  IT'S HARD AS RUBBER and is INEDIBLE!!!

You can also buy the cities most expensive silverware, cookware, and other housewares.  mostly made in China and nothing that justify the high costs.

So if Whole Foods is Whole Paycheck, Andronico's is Whole Salary.  lol

What is up with Andronico's prices??? They've gone completely off the deep end!! Chandon sparkling wine at $23 when you can get it for $14 at Bevmo, Societe Roquefort at $37/Lb when it's $13/Lb at Trader Joe's, $3 an avocado (in JULY, it's NOT the dead of winter!!),  those are a few of the extremes I can remember, I love good food, but this extreme when it comes to prices makes me really feel as though I am getting ripped off.  No wonder the parking lot was so empty.

ok in a pinch, but I would rather go to Bi-Rite or Rainbow, since I can understand that their prices are higher because they have fewer stores and thus lower volume...

I am so utterly disappointed by Andronico's.  I don't want to be, but I am.

I went in with the intention of buying fregola, since I figured they had it.  It took a clerk at the store about 5 minutes to NOT find, then he had to ask someone else which took another 5 minutes.  10 minutes later I found a small pouch of fregola for a ridiculous price.  I couldn't justify buying a little bag of oversize couscous (but with a Sardinian twist) for $9.00, but I still picked it up because I felt bed for those who struggled and labored and toiled to find it amongst the other overpriced goods on fancy metal racks.

Penne was next on the list.  That was easy to find, expensive, but easy to find.  I made my way to the checkout, and waited about 10 minutes for the cashier to figure out how to work the POS (point of sale or something else?).  My waiting prompted me to remember the chicken that I needed to buy, so I went back to the butcher counter.

At the meat section, I continued to wait for about 6 minutes while a lady complained to the butcher that the sirloin she bought the day either had already had been spoiled.  The butcher-man poked and sniffed the spoiled meat sample for like 45 seconds longer than he had to, while I watched him suspiciously, and felt awkward for him.

Second-hand embarrassment is the worst feeling, but on top of that I was thinking, "what am I getting myself into?"

I eyed the lady butcher behind him who was doing nothing in particular, just "looking busy," which makes me fell bad for the store owners who have to pay her for doing, well, nothing in particular.  She helped me about 4 minutes after the first lady and butcher-man left to go talk to the manager about the bad sirloin she bought a day before.  She finally rang me up for it, albeit VERY begrudgingly.  I felt rubbed the wrong way, but I dismissed it as I made my way to the checkout counter, again.

I waited in line while someone 2 people ahead of me handed a 20 to the cashier, and when he opened the register OOPS, NO MONEY!  The tray of change had disappeared from the register.  After rounding up the manger, we were shifted to another checkout, as we moved our groceries from one conveyor to another.  OOPS, the cashier still could not figure out how to run the POS.

As I looked down in dismay, I noticed the price on my chicken--$28.00!  Turns out the silly butcher had charged me for $16.00/lb VEAL SHANK, rather than $3.99/lb chicken breast.

At this point, I had been at Andronico's for well over 30 minutes, enduring multiple disappointments and inadequacies.  I left hungrier, older and poorer than I was before.  Sorry Andronico's, its not just the low blood sugar talking when I say that you need a serious serious serious make over.

**This is in reference to their catering.**

My friend/real estate agent hosted a housewarming party at my new place and we decided to go with Andronico's for the catering (much because of their variety of offerings since we were doing sort of a 'worldly' theme).

They blew us away with the job that they did. We also were able to drop off our own platters and they arranged everything nicely on those (this avoided us wasting the plastic containers they would otherwise come in).

Things people RAVED about: the baklava platter (one of the types was the EXACT replica of the very first one I tried when at a sweets shop in Beirut, Lebanon!), the samosas (non-greasy and super tasty filling), the chicken satays and the antipasti platter. And, of course, sushi is always a winning choice.

Things we probably didn't need to get: Greek salad (I didn't realize it was going to be a lettuce-based salad and, therefore, was more difficult to eat) and empanadas.

The bread for the Aram sandwiches was super fresh and I loved how there was a smoked-salmon filling with one of the varieties.

And let me say again that at least 10 people went on and on to me about the baklava platter!!!

Yeah $$$.

But not a bad place to buy what you need.  Just way too easy to drop $200+.  I've seen a housewife or two ring up that kinda tab.

I'd never go here if I wasn't in the neighborhood.

And when I do go here, its because I'm not down for the commute to Trader Joe's.

Also, you can just head to 23rd & Irving for much cheaper produce.

I know someone's gonna hate me for this, but I'm giving Andronico's three stars.  It seems kind of hypocritical of me, doesn't it?  Especially after I gave Falletti's two stars mainly on being overpriced.  But whereas Falletti's is frufru in the most annoying way, Andronico's is just overpriced.  Sure, the damage to your wallet is the same, but I'd rather be coaxed into spending too much money than expected to do so.

The inside of the store can be smelly.  I think that comes from the artisan cheeses they have.  Or maybe it's the fresh fish.  Or maybe it's the fact that people who spend too much money on groceries assume that overpriced stores do a good job of keeping everything on their shelves fresh when they don't always do so.  (I've gotten moldy grapes from Andronico's before, but I don't remember if it was from this one or the Berkeley one.)

It is cheery inside, though, and I felt like I wasn't getting completely hosed last week when I bought organic milk from here for a three-year-old's-birthday-party emergency.  In fact, the milk was relatively cheap for San Francisco.

Gourmet but generally overpriced and you'll have to deal with a bunch of yuppies buying their must-have organic fish eggs and brie.  Fun cheeses and sometimes decent deals make it a worthwhile place to check out for certain organic or fancy items.

MOST BEAUTIFUL MARKET IN SAN FRANCISCO. HANDS DOWN.

I am a faithful Whole Foods shopper....... most of the time. A Sunday afternoon in the sunset brought me to Andronicos and I was in heaven. Upon walking into the doors I was met with a colorful, fresh, glistening produce display and sweet smells from the bakery. My boyfriend and I spent a good 45 minutes wandering the aisles in amazement, impressed with the extensive selection of delicious products and goods. The store was sparkling clean, spacious, and bright. Andronicos carries everything Whole Foods does AND THEN SOME, with the fabulous addition of regular "run-of-the-mill" grocery items. If I could afford to shop here regularly I would - as the quality of their products comes at a high price. However, the fine things in life are worth an occasional shopping splurge - so if you find yourself out in the Sunset, stop by Andronicos for a mouthwatering market meal!

I have a love hate relationship with Andronico's.  They have the most amazing bakery section I have ever seen (aside from Bristol Farms), and they have such a diverse selection of just about everything.  I looove their fruit tarts and their cookies.  But, like everyone else has said, it is too damn expensive!  Their produce is ridiculously overpriced.  I never buy fruits or veggies here (why would I, when there are so many little produce marts on Irving?).  I only shop here when I need one or two things because it's so close to home, or if I need something that I can't find elsewhere.  (They saved me the day before Valentine's day after I went to two different Safeways in the pouring rain looking for stupid cupcake liners.  I decided to stop there before I went home, and, lo and behold!  HELLA cupcake liners!)

I was shocked by the deli section of Andronico's: amazing selection of everything. Other highlights are the produce department (so freaking pretty I was close to taking a picture) and the bakery. One day, when I have a career and all, I plan to come here and buy groceries! For real! But for now, I'll continue to buy 30 cent bags of nuts other things I can afford.

Decent selection of higher-end groceries here, but you'll pay for it. Every time I shop at Andronico's it ends up costing way more than expected, which makes it kind of the opposite of the Trader Joe's experience. At least the meat and pastry counter guys are nice. Beer section is impressive.

About 90% of the stuff at andronico's is massively overpriced.  So you shouldn't feel guilty about hogging the cheese and olive oil samples.
That said, the meat section is very good as is the beer and liquor selection.  The butchers are very friendly and helpful.

The produce section can be very lacking in freshness sometimes...the 22nd & Irving Market is way better.  I tend to only buy niche items that I can't get anywhere else.

The beer selection is excellent.  They always carry unique brews such as Bison Brews (from Berkeley, CA) and St. Peter's ales from the UK.

This is the sad excuse the Sunset has to offer in place of a Whole Foods.  Their products are expensive, and there's a huge lack of selection.  Their meat isle is especially lacking as the only grass-fed beef I was able to buy one day is pre-chopped for beef stew.  Also, the only organic anything in terms of protein was chicken.

I am way too poor to come here. The only thing I can probably afford is something from their cafe. I think I've ranted about the coffee here. *looks through own old yelp reviews & can't find it*

What can I say about this place? One word, EXPENSIVE. I must admit they have a huge selection of cheese. They have free samples of cheese and of whatever is towards the back of the store. If the prices were towards Trader Joe's, I'd buy stuff. I think even if I was rich, I wouldn't buy stuff from here. I'd stick with Safeway, Lucky and Irving (the Asian side, the 20s...avenues).

Well, I'll talk about today's experience. What did I buy? A whoopie pie...2 chocolate chip cookies and in between had marshmallow. What was inside the case with all the cookies, tarts & cakes? A fruit fly, dude. They have good cookies though...the 99cent cookies are good.

Quite pretentious little supermarket.  Prices are fairly expensive.  You run into a lot of soccer moms.  But hey, if you're looking for good food and don't mind all of the above, then this is a great supermarket.  They have a lot of everything.  The food that they offer is pretty great.  They have fun desserts, plants, some ethnic food.  It's like a little Whole Foods in the Sunset.  My favorite thing that they offer is their date bars.  They're like fig newton bars, but totally unhealthy and yummy.  Man, they're good!!!

The good part: attractive decor, lots of fancy-schmancy items, plenty of ready-to-eats. Plus free Wifi in the cafe. And a public bathroom. The bad part: expensive, not very clean, consistently makes the worst coffee drinks I have ever tasted.

Good place to go for that one hard-to-find gourmet item that you can't live without; or stop by on the way to a friend's house for dinner to get a bottle of wine or dessert. Waaayyyyy too expensive for regular grocery shopping (it's more expensive than Other Avenues!)

If you're going to use the cafe, be ready to clean your own table (before you sit down) and do NOT order anything from the cafe counter - the pastries are stale, the coffees are burnt, and the mochas are sans chocolate. You're better off getting packaged food & drink from the grocery isles.

And what's up with that crazy new checkout scheme?

Although it does seem to a bit on the expensive side, they certainly have specialty and gourmet items that other grocery stores just don't have. But what I have bought from them, wasn't out of the question expensive. They have a great selection of produce, flowers, olives, cheeses, cakes, and pastries, kind of a more inexpensive whole foods-ish. I haven't even been to one of the store, and I can imagine there are better goodies to be found.

I used to go to elementary school just across the street and I have many fond memories of coming here to get their potato skins.  The 8th graders thought it was super cool to come here after school and get food other than the frisbee with cheese they offered in the cafeteria.

Well hot damn times have changed!  They no longer serve potato skins... perhaps it is considered commoners food now!  They've totally revamped everything at least twice over.  Their produce section must have been designed by a professional interior decorator.  The vegies are placed in a shelf in a wave formation.  Gorgeous!  And they keep it always stocked full OR no one is really buying anything because a bell pepper will cost you $5 each!

When I passed by the meat section they had free samples.  Lil smokies with sauce you think?  Hmm?  NO, again that's commoners' food.  ::scoff::  They had kobe style beef with porcini burgers.  What the what?  Two steps over another free sample.  This time grade A prime rib prepared medium rare.  Eh... I don't think we're in CostCo anymore, Toto!

Adronico's definitely caters to a whole other class, and unfortunately they're not in the Sunset.  But it's nice to walk through gawking at the immaculately arranged unique food products.  Much of which seem to be specialty items... independent, organic, green, self-sustainable, limited edition, exclusively made for, blah blah.  Sure you can try Mama Toby's Organic Marinara with imported cheese from Italy, but you'll have to serve it on top of Top Ramen and chug down a Juicy Juice as "wine" with it.

There are display cases that will gather all the necessary ingredients of a recipe in one easy to find spot.  I noticed a case for tiramisu decked with lady fingers, marscapone cheese, coffee, and cognac.  Awesome idea.

This will never be my go to supermarket, especially when the Asian markets just 10 blocks over will offer something similar at a fraction of the costs.  But if you find yourself needing to be inspired or wanting a treat, yes, you go ahead and buy that $10 celery stalk.  You will feel so posh... and hungry at the same time.

I don't like that I have to come here often. I don't like their prices, and I don't need a vast cheese selection in my neighborhood grocery store.

So why do I come here and pay more than I have to?

Because the Safeways in this town suck ass. I don't come here because I like paying their prices or because I think $17 for a roasted chicken is reasonable. I don't give a shit about free range chickens. I come here because I'm tired of Safeway being out of things. I'm tired of buying strawberries at Safeway and having at least 4 of them be moldy.

Andronico's is a winner in my book, but only by default.

I'll admit, everything is a bit pricey here. It's easy to spend A LOT of money. But if you know what you want, then it's not too bad. I'll have to say the food here is a plus. Andronico's carries some food that other grocery stores don't have. Also, some of the workers here are very friendly. Once I needed some help finding some things and one of the workers helped and and was extremely courteous.

Mini donuts!!!!! I usually don't care for cake donuts (I prefer raised), but these are soooooo good. Since they are mini, I convinced myself that it was ok to try a variety. Well, I ended up getting 4 for breakfast. Chocolate orange was my favorite. It's chocolaty with just the right amount of orange flavor. The pumpkin one tasted like pumpkin pie. The one with the sprinkles was pretty. But it had a few too many sprinkles and made the donut too crunchy for my liking. The cinnamon sugar one is just the way I wanted it to be, sweet with a touch of spice. I really liked that they were not overly sweet.

They're over at the bakery section. $0.79 each.

Love this chain.  Smaller, upscale grocer that is a tad pricey.  I like to shop around and multiple places, so i know what to pick up at adronico's to compensate for their prices.  I love the beer selection, since San Francisco has so many crappy liquor stores with no selection.  this place makes you feel like you should be shopping at safeway instead, but there are some packaged goods there that are worthwhile.  comparable to whole foods or trader joe's or henry's in SD.  produce is better than safeway; it's funny people complain that safeway is cheaper, but it should be, because everything i get from there is crap.  eat less you fat americans!!!  adronico's also boasts a great meat selection and great cheese selection.  the bakery goods are average, not sure if they make it themselves.  I just wish it wasn't so expensive.

Wow, is this even the same store? I lived in the hood, back in the day, when we used to call Andronico's "The Andronico Strain" because it was filthy and smelled like the Early Bird special at Denny's.  I popped in today to buy some lunch and was shocked, shocked I tell you, about how utterly gorgeous the store looks now.  The produce section is like a work of art, and they now have hot tables and a salad bar similar to Whole Foods.  Today they had some sweet women handing out samples, one of whom suckered me into buying her product.  Kudos, Andronico's, on a remodel well done!

The other day, I stopped in to Andronico's on my way somewhere.  I needed cash, and Andronico's acts as a good ATM.  Just buy gum, and ask for $20 cash back.  No ATM fee.

Anyway, I was buying my gum and waiting for the dough from the teller when the bag guy started talking to me.  He was probably in his 50s.  A career bag guy.  He chatted me up about something, and the conversation culminated in him making a joke about me being in college.

Ha ha.  We all laughed.  How ridiculous that this woman who is clearly in her mid-30s would be in college!  I walked out of the store still smiling.  Faltered.  Stopped.  Looked back.  Wait.  Did he just make one of those jokes like on a bad sitcom where the man treats the old woman as if she's much younger than she is to prop up her ego?  And I LAUGHED at that?

Not long ago, people actually mistook me for a college student.  Oh, the times are a-changin, alright.  Pretty soon you'll see my reviews of older adult community living and pancake diners that play Count Basie music.  Oh, how I miss the old days.

Unfortunately, prices at Andronico's have gone up quite a bit in recent months.  My theory is that it's to fund the recent facelift store has had.  Maybe I should take a cue from Andronico's.

You owe me $5 for reading this review.

Well, I'm finally updating my review now that they finished their ungodly long remodel. After holding off judgment, I have to say I'm overwhelming impressed.

What once looked like an over-priced Albertson's, is finally in the 21st century a la Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. You walk straight into produce to an almost sculpture-like arrangement of colorful vegetation. The store is much more open now, with a huge prepared foods section, deli, wine and cheese section. One of the city's best butcher and fish counters gets a nice makeover. The store is laid out relatively the same, but with nicer displays, new lighting and an overall more luxe appeal.

If you're like me, and firmly in San Francisco working middle class poor, then Andronico's serves only as an emergency stop or specialty store for meat, produce and fancy stuffs. They are trying to put some deals out there, but ultimately, Safeway is a much better value for the basics.
