Review from Aaron M.
Whoa, it's 2010 and I haven't yet written a review of my favorite grocery store on EARTH? Why is it so awesomesauce?
1) They have BOTH the the snobby healthy stuff and the non-snobby non-healthy stuff. It drives me nuts to go to a "natural" foods store to get my aged gouda and then not be able to get golden grahams. Andronico's solves the problem, and doesn't gouge you on the commoners' items (cough cough M**** S****'s).
2) In 2002, I cooked steak about 50 times over a few months as I attempted to find the best meat and best preparation style. In the end there were several stores contending for the honor of tastiest meat (including Schaub's and Mollie Stone's) but Andronico's most consistently had the richest USDA prime beef. They also have American Kobe beef quite often and I don't know of any other grocer that does. Note that the beef I (and probably you) like is the tasty kind, not the sustainable, healthy grass fed kind like from Whole Foods. But I think they have grass fed beef sometimes. In any event, see point 1. And they also usually have at least one of the tasty beef items on sale for prices competitive with Safeway.
3) Selection: this is the only place I know of that has multiple offerings of aged gouda and gruyere, USDA prime beef, turkey (and vegetarian) bacon, pork bacon, slab bacon, port varietals and dark chocolate ice creams. It's like food heaven.
4) I totally don't get peoples' bitching about prices. This place is cheaper than whole foods for the snobby items (ever shopped for aged cheese?), fairly priced for the items that they carry exclusively (they could charge double what they do for Kobe beef or Beemster Master's or even some of the more highly rated wines), and non-gouging for my favorite slummy items like mac and cheese. But indeed if you are not shopping for the finer things you'll definitely save a buck or two by going to one of the Safeways nearby and buying the club card items.
5) The service is pretty great. -

I have shoped at the Andronico's in Los Altos several time in the past. I have found the whole gestalt of their operation, pricing and selection offers very little value for what you're really getting. If you want expensive organic fruit and vegatables, then Whole Foods is the way to go. If you want high quality prepared foods then Draegers is the way to go. Andronicos is expensive and doesn't offer these things.
Once when I had the flue I bought their chicken soup. It was so salty and peppery that I had to bring it back. I went to Whole foods and found a great chicken soup. -

There are three things I love about Andronico's Market:
1. Specialty cheeses
2. Hot deli
3. Desserts
They have a great selection of specialty cheeses. They variety of already desserts (cookies, cakes and pies) are great especially when you're looking for something to take to a party or when you have last minute guests over at your home. The hot deli has some amazing already made foods- free range turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and cranberry sauce. Once when I was short on time- we dropped in and picked up dinner & dessert here at Andronico's. The turkey dinner that they have is overpriced but extremely delicious. The other parts of the grocery store- the meat department, produce- veggies & fruits are just okay and nothing special. One look around and you'll realize how 'dated' this grocery store looks. For the price point you're better off going to Whole Foods- better selection and around the same price point or cheaper on certain items.

I've been to Andronico's perhaps a half-dozen times since rewriting my review (someone deleted my original) in 2009. Spoiled food (rice pudding among other things), tasteless stuffed pasta (for $10.99 no less), and crabby, complaining staff at the checkout line. This place used to be SWARMING with customers and nice staff happy to help. I realize that times have changed but it's my choice to stop shopping at this store.

No more 15% discount for Stanford affiliates. Boo. 5% everyday for Stanford affiliates and all students (at any school).
Now that the discount is even smaller (and the mark-up is pretty high), I'll only come for grocery emergencies on my way home from work.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Let's start with the positive:
Easy in/out access to the parking lot
Attached to Stanford campus = fast bike grocery trip, in theory
Down to business:
Have you been in here midday?
You could waste an entire lunch hour, grow a full head of gray hair, AND get an upset stomach from the amount of out-of-code product stocked here.
The lines can get out of control at the registers and the sandwich counter. Enough so that I have filled up a basket on multiple occasions and ended up walking out with nothing because it was not worth the wait.
Yet again, product past its shelf life. Seriously. You need to manage your inventory. Yesterday I was in the dairy section and went to buy some cottage cheese, picked up MULTIPLE containers that had "Best By" dates of November 24. This took place December 1. NOT okay.
I have seen this many times on many products here.
Shop at your own risk.
Waste your own time.
My recommendations:
Produce & Dairy from Sigona's at Stanford Mall.
Trader Joe's or Safeway near by for grocery.
JJ & F Food Store, Tootsie's or anywhere on campus for Sandwiches
I've hit my tipping point. I'm out.Listed in: You, too, can cook!, customer service fail

Los Angeles, CA
I love Andronico's, every single one of them. They have incredible prepared foods in the deli and bakery sections, a great assortment of cheeses, harder to find brands of whatever, gourmet items, and of course, the Adult Brownie (which is so true to its name it should be x-rated). But this location at Stanford Shopping Center has got to be my favorite for one very clear reason (well, clear to me and very soon to be clear to you).
In high school, I was madly in love with Steve Young. In all honesty, a love that mad doesn't go away ever, and so I still have feelings for the guy. But in high school, I'm talking about some serious crushing going on. My graduation cap had his number puffy-painted to the board, prominently displayed next to my puffy-painted future alma mater.
All of this Steve Young reminiscing has a purpose, I swear. So returning home from college one summer, I went shopping at this Andronico's with my mom, and I kid you not, Steve Young was pushing a cart down an aisle with his munchkin of a cutie son plopped in the front seat part. Young's step was more of a bounce. My heart was certainly more of a bounce, skipping a beat, practically putting me into cardiac arrest. I dropped my grocery basket right in front of him. I was sure the thud was a million decibels. I was completely horrified that I had just done this clumsiness in front of my McDreamy. But at least I got to see my McDreamy....and from 5 feet away. Our eyes locked for probably two long seconds.
It was one of the best days of my life. And it all happened at THIS Andronico's. -
Review from Bradley N.
Woodside, CA
Three generations of family-owned market experience, eight Bay Area locations (four in Berkeley alone), and a history that goes all the way back to 1929: it adds up to a top-quality operation with some very fine products and some expert staffers who can cater to the specialized tastes of its middle and upper-income clients.
Apparently two Andronicos (in Walnut Creek and Danville) shut down in 2006, but otherwise this operation seems quite solid. This Palo Alto branch opened in 1997 and is in a great location in the Stanford Shopping Center, although I suspect that it will not be thrilled that a Trader Joe's just opened up nearby in the Town and Country Village on Embarcadero and El Camino.
Personally, I really loved this place, even though it took me more than a year of living in the PA area to finally discover it. I came on a recommendation to pick up a bottle of Aglianico del Vulture (Re Manfredi) and ended up leaving with this plus a prosecco (Carpenè Malvolti) for New Year's eve and a selection of meats from their excellent deli: some thinly-sliced Fra'Mani rosemary uncured ham, jamón serrano, and their superb house-made roast beef. I also picked up an Acme Bread Co. pain au levain and a La Boulange brioche from the bakery section as well.
So, it was like getting a little bit of the best of Italy, Berkeley, and San Francisco, and all in Palo Alto! Needless to say, I will not be coming here for my daily shopping needs, but I will return for such divine specialty items when I have something special to celebrate or just want to treat myself, my wife, and our friends to some memorable meals.Listed in: Passing Time in Palo Alto

Review from Mithrilzero X.
Fremont, CA
We were actually looking for the Whole Foods and happened here as we took a drastically wrong turn and ended up near Stanford, but my wife had always wanted to see this place so I figured it was as good as just driving around aimlessly and futilely (looks wrong but spell-checked btw, although it was online).
It was late on a Sunday I think, and it was mostly deserted. However, it was unusually clean and orderly, as if the entire mart was a photo op waiting to happen, with more workers than consumers. It was also unusually quiet, with very little hubbub from anyone there, like some sort of supermarket morgue. But it was beautiful, fun to be in, an amazing array of foods and food choices (who needs 5 kinds of mozzarella? I stopped looking after 5 kinds, there could have been more) but overall it was a surreal and sublime experience. My main memory was seeing the fruits and vegetables orderly and well-stocked. Guess anything's better than the roadside fruitstand I go to.
Prices here aren't awesome, but if you're looking for the here and there specialty item it may be here just for them to say "oh yeah we stock that." They also have an eating place, and although we were hungry I was after Wahoo's in the neighborhood (a different story and review, btw) so we didn't stop there. I would be very willing to try it out, though, maybe next time when I don't make the mistake of going to Wahoo's.
A different spot indeed, and for those who frequent regularly hopefully you aren't too spoiled with such an interesting little place. -
Review from Barb B.
The world's snottiest checkout clerk works here. Gives you MAJOR stink eye for looking at the magazines while waiting for you to have the pleasure of having her ring up your expensive groceries. Why is she the only checkout person available when I go...everytime? Its like some bad Twilight Zone episode where I am stuck in an Andronico's time loop with her and the multitudes of double strollers and blue haired crankyassed women who frequent this place.
Food is good...but jeesh. I'm not inclined to pay this kind of money for stink eye. -

I loved it back in the day but now it seems like they are slipping. Once i was browsing the fridge selection of desserts, and found one molded and told one of the staff of the situation ... they seemed pretty apathetic.
They have a great variety of items that you won't find elsewhere. I appreciate their salad bar, soups, and sandwiches that are made there on site. -

Just a quick shout out to the friendly deli counter ladies at Andronicos. I stumbled in late one night a few weeks ago, in desperate need of some sliced turkey meat. It was 9:52 pm. Andronicos closes at 10:00. Most grocery stores close up their deli cases early, so I approached the counter attendant bowing and begging forgiveness when I inquired if it was still possible to have some poultry sliced up. Her response: "Sure! It's not 10:00 yet!"
All businesses should run this way. -
Review from Angelica N.
San Francisco, CA
A sandwich at Andronico's costs, bare minimum, $6.99. That ain't ballin' to me.
Having gotten that issue out of the way, here are my main concerns with the sandwich counter:
1. It takes forever for you to place your order initially.
2. Once said order has been placed, it's like that scene in Love Actually, where Alan Rickman is trying to buy a present for his maybe-future mistress as his wife slowly approaches, and the salesperson puts every tiny detail into wrapping the gift in the most time consuming, intricate, infuriating way possible.
3. Once said order has been executed, you pay said price.
That all being said, they make a damn good sandwich. -

Andronico's is a great market, but especially the people, they are my family. I miss Kris! Maria and Jose in the deli, and Martha is slow, but makes a mean sandwich! Mr. "Big" aka Alex, you make me laugh, and cutie-pie Luke and his fine twin brother! My Sofia man, and I am blanking out on your name (ETHAN)-just promoted-"to do everything now! Carolyn is the bomb, OK then, the samples are not coming out as much, but when they do, WOW, you buy it! The cheeses, the meats, the fruit! What a marketing concept. Also, the meats that are marked down are a deal, keep it coming ENRIQUE! Yeah, and you know the zone machines keep demagnitizing my credit cards!
Love you all, great service, too high prices, but good specials!!! Great produce and seafood and meats! -
Review from Lily R.
I expect superior yummies when I shop at fru fru stores like this.
I really liked their sushi. Grocery stores are giving sushi bars a run for their money. It might be the chefs they hire. I had great spicy tuna rolls for lunch here.
What didn't meet my expectations was the sandwich. The lady behind the counter was so scatterbrained. We asked for Turkey with muenster but she couldn't get the cheese package open so we opted for provolone instead. She added provolone AND muenster AND some gross wasabi mustard. We asked for spicy brown and got that other stuff. All in all it made for one weird tasting sandwich. I ate the turkey inside and tossed the bread. What a waste of money.
I guess I might come back for more sushi on my next visit to Nordy's. You can bring your lunch over and sit outside on the tables near the coffee bar. The sun hits this patio perfectly at noon. (inbetween crate and barrel and nordys) -
Review from BeBe C.
Palo Alto, CA
I am not sure if I should give it four or three stars...
I used to live in Berkeley and love Andronico's. The produce is great, and so is the meat and cheese selection. However, this Palo Alto store is not quite on par with its Berkeley counterparts. It's still good and better than Safeway, but I expect more from Andronico's. I guess I'll give the Andronico's chain 4 stars, but the Palo Alto store 3 stars.
There also seems to be something wrong with the staff--they are not quite knowledgeable about their products. The staff at the deli cannot explain to me the difference between one type of Italian ham to another. I also asked for headcheese, but the staff looked completely clueless. For these reasons, I would still return to Cosentino's in Santa Clara or San Jose (despite my recent relocation to Palo Alto from Santa Clara). Cosentino's has far fresher produce, a better butcher section, a phenomenal deli meat counter, a wider cheese selection, and a more knowledgeable staff. (Read my review about Cosentino's.)
Anyway, I guess if you want a quick bite with your dog, you can go to Andronico's. There is some spacious outdoor seating. However, mind you, the deli meats used for sandwiches are pre-sliced. This is disappointing as deli meats quickly loose their flavors once sllced and left sitting in the fridge. I still like Cosentino's, which does not pre-slice their lunch meats for sandwiches.Listed in: Certified Dog-ok Eateries

Review from Renae H.
Their prepared foods section is really nice, it's perfect for those "oh, you wanted to provide lunch at this meeting?" days. The asian chicken salad is easily my favorite, though the prepared sandwiches are nice too when you don't have time to stand in line at the deli counter.
They have lots of interesting specialty foods as well. One time I found this totally awesome sea salt that was shaped like little pyramids, which is apparently a characteristic of this particular kind of salt. How cool is that?
My favorite thing about this store are the little tables and end displays which showcase new or interesting items. I'm a sucker for impulse buys. Chocolate with goji berries for only $8? Sure, why not? Truffle-infused honey? Sounds yummy! Strange cheese I've never heard of whose name I can't pronounce? I'm so there.
Andronicos....not the place you'd go for your every day grocery shopping, but a perfect spot for last minute emergencies and culinary oddities. -

Andronico's has changed a bit over the years, but I always come here for bread pudding. Nowadays the price for bread pudding goes by weight (as opposed to serving in the old bakery), but I still love it.
It is kinda pricey, but you have to factor in the freshness. I take advantage of this in the deli section for lunch. Mmm.. -

Fine... call me a cheap bastard, go ahead!
I just can't justify going here to do any real grocery shopping for what they charge... my mom would smack me upside my head if she ever saw me shopping here.
But... if you just need a couple of things from the produce aisle, it's a good place to go. They have really fresh produce, and the selection to match. -

I use to shop here every week. But I don't anymore. Here's why:
1) Andronico's food quality has dropped significantly
2) There is very little organic
3) They stock the shelves with secondary brands
4) Service is getting worse and worse
5) Still very expensive
Basically I feel that when I shop there, I'm paying for worse than Safeway quality at Wholefoods price. -

I bought a cheesecake topped with kiwis, blueberrys, mandarin oranges, etc. for V-day. Valentines day not Victory-day. It looked great. Then I tried the fruit. Some were moldy. Unfortunately, I find this out half-way. I proceed to vomit for the next half-hour and then sleep the next 11. They have good sandwiches but stay away from the bakery.

I like Andronico's but it is VERY expensive at this location--to the tune of ridiculous.
I like the large cheese selection and the deli. It does have an extensive selection of good gourmet products.
However, I did once get a deli worker give me Prosciutto with the rind still on. -
Review from Denise Q.
Like Whole Foods but with less emphasis on the organic and more just on the whole gourmet grocery store feel.
99 cents for little mini fruit tart pastries.
Yummy fresh baked cookies and other goodies, including petit fours.
Though I personally have never had the sandwiches here, the line at lunch time is always out the door.
Also the outside seating is perfect to people watch at while enjoying your lunch.
Cookbooks, pots and pans...........anything related to the kitchen is covered in someway or quickly addressed in this store. For all your general cooking needs and if you are looking for kitchen stuff and foods that show you are no longer shopping at Ikea as you have arrived now into an incredible job/career. -
Review from Erin O.
Andronico's has a good place in my heart, and I would rank this location higher than their location in Los Altos mainly because it's massive in comparison.
They have a solid deli counter, with good sandwiches, even if they are a bit expensive. Their bakery counter is again, very solid, and I'm a big fan of their Adult Brownies. I don't like chocolate all that much, but I like this version of chocolate. I also like their selection of cold drinks. A good variety of froo-froo drinks (tons of iced teas, almost juice drinks, etc.) and a good selection of high end beers. If I need a funky cracker, or I don't want to deal with the pretention of Whole Foods earth mother-ness, I go here. I can get my perogies, a decent steak cut, and very good produce without plowing through a mile of tofu-related meatlike products. -
Review from Roshan V.

My only experience with an Andronico's was with the one in Berkeley many years ago when my sister was a student. I think it was the first time I saw shopping carts with poles that prevented theft of the shopping cart. So when I heard I was going here to look for a turducken, I expected the turkey to be rat, the duck to be racoon, and the hen to be old chinese newspapers.
Much to my surprise this store lives up to being in the Stanford mall behind Nordstroms. I mean, they have an olive bar with like 20 different types of olives! I had never seen an olive bar before in my life - that's a lot of martinis! -
Review from Amanda F.
Mountain View, CA
I liked them until today. I purchased a chicken breast and rice pudding. When I got home and tried to eat them with my boyfriend, we discovered that BOTH were spoiled. What are the odds?
What really irks me is that the expiration date on the pudding was at least a week out. I have a sneaking suspicion that either the expiration date was swapped, or a huge vat of the stuff was created in one sitting and then "dated" when it was portioned out over a few days or weeks.
Note:
Added an extra star because they have an excellent granola that I can't find anywhere else. -

I really miss this place...It was a regular lunch stop when I used to work across the street at Stanford Children's. A quick little walk, but not a cheap lunch. Well worth it though.
I always got drawn to other areas of the market aside from where the pre-made lunch items or deli was...the store just drew me in with their unique little finds.
I wouldn't say this is a place to do your full grocery shopping, unless money is no option, but for special items, its perfect.
The staff is superb and always friendly and very helpful, even when the stress the the big lunch crowd comes.
Bonus: Shopping just footsteps away.....food and shopping? My kinda lunch break! -

I eat here at least once a week. The Cuban sandwhich is to die for. The counter ladies are funny, kind, and fast.
The only downside is that it is so popular with Stanford employees that it can be hard to find seating on a beautiful day.
I appreciate being able to have upscale lunch food for reasonable prices. -

Oakland, CA
This place is sure convenient if you're on campus. They also make darned good sammies. My only beef, okay 2 of them, are 1. Stuff is a skosh on the pricey side which would be worth it if the quality were all that and the service was good but my point number 2 is that service is pretty effing lacking. I don't expect the checkout clerk to chirp, "Hello" or ask, "How are you". I'm not that needy. But today, the clerk and the bag dude were talking about a dead woman and didn't stop talking about how she died a horrific death while scanning my groceries. And granted I only bought a couple small items, the bag dude plopped them on the counter for me to take instead of asking if I'd like a bag. I would've declined, but it would've been nice for him to ask instead of ASSuming. OK, maybe I am needy...

Andronico's is your typical high-end supermarket. I came here one day for some lunch on the way home from a visit to Stanford. Because this is like a moderation stop, I did try to bargain. But here, it's kinda hard. Their selection on deli sandwiches was low. It was an okay sandwich, pretty small for what I paid. I like the deli sandwiches at Safeway-more selection, and under three bucks! Hiyahh!

I'm on a weston-price type diet and it's the only place on the penninsula I can get (almost) everything: unpasteurized-FRESH dairy and grass fed meat and organic/free range chicken all under one roof.
They even have potato chips cooked in olive oil or avocado oil.

I feel like the freshness of the deli & ready to eat packaged foods are taking a dive downhill. Had a couple not so fresh tasting salads from the case over the last few months and last time went for drip coffee, they were out of decaf by 6:30 pm so went for the fully caffeinated. The self serve coffee area was a mess, no garbage in sight for the sugar packets & such, so they were being strewn on the counters. I'm thinking we should be able to expect more from high end markets.

although ive worked in palo alto for more than 2 years, im still not used to all of the high-end shops and markets.
palo alto is a great town, but you can tell, you gotta have money to coexist with all of the opulent niceness- nothing wrong with that.
anyways, andronico's is like Pier 1 World Market & Whole Foods mashed into one, but multiply the upscale items by 10.
Dont get me wrong, the food is great. They have a deli with tasty foods which can be very convenient during the lunch hour, but gotta warn you about the pricey-ness. Also, they have a wide selection of beer and wine, which is fun to stroll by if you want to have a good drink with dinner later on in the day.
overall, this place is gravy! just not my cup of tea. -

Review from Adam S.
Palo Alto, CA
Dear Andronicos,
I'm going to state in very clear terms why people should avoid shopping at this store.
1. You are dishonest. You systematically leave up expired sale tags and neglect to honor current sales at the cash register. You leave the burden of checking every detail of one's receipt entirely up to the customer. I have shopped at this store dozens of times, and it is rare that I leave without having to make a correction.
2. You gouge your customers. One a recent trip I found most items I looked at marked up 50%-100% above the normal retail price. It's one thing to sell expensive products like Whole Foods or the Crate&Barrel next door does. It's quite another to expect your customers to pay nearly double the standard price for common items. I found most deli meats were in the range of $15-$18/lb. Name-brand cereals were $4-$6 for the 10-12oz boxes. Shall I go on, or just suggest that your customers bring their iPhone barcode scanners?
3. You are pretentious. I know its important to keep up appearances in Palo Alto, but your customers deserve better than to have to subsidize your fly-ridden olive bar by overpaying for everything else in the store.
4. Your are disrespectful. To assume that your customers will be happy to vastly overpay for food that, for the most part, can be found at safeway--well, I guess it's their loss, but the rest of us suffer for it.
5. You are located in California. There is no reason why the vast majority of your produce, even the most common items should come from outside the country.
6. Your deli is not a fancy bistro in New York. It is a grocery store deli and your customers deserve better then to be charged $8-10 for really bad sandwiches. There's one counter worker who barely understands english who will make a random sandwich and then insist that he gave you what you ordered to cover up the fact that he didn't understand.
7. You don't even carry the GOOD stuff that customers SHOULD be willing to pay a premium for. There are some better products at TJ's for, crying out loud. Forget comparison you to WFs...
I could go on, and on. But in sum, if your going to sell the same stuff as Safeway, why don't you just provide good value like everyone else and show your customers a little respect. -

Conveniently located next to Nordys so I can pick up to go items for my ride home. Love their hot food take out boxes - chicken piccata, spaghetti & meatballs, & pork roast. A better alternative to frozen food when you're on the go! The only place I know that has pre-made crepes and healthy Kavli brand crackers! Prices are higher than what you'd find at Safeway's but the selection of organic and higher quality food definitely make it worth the $$!

Hippies with money, that's what I think of when I think Andronico's. I have found them to have some items most definitely off the beaten path, and for good reason: most items I honestlydon't find anything of interest here. They do have some excellent pre-made meals though: and the food certainly beats ralphs for quality.
