Andrew Murray you can't please everyone I guess but you sure did please me. I was impressed 100%
Your tasting room manager Kelly represented your name with the utmost class.
Please people, or at least my Yelp friends or fellow wine drinkers, disregard any one sentence one star review. Yes wine is subjective and these are opinions but let me explain.

Environment- The tasting room is environment conscious.

Staff- I can speak for Kelly on this trip. I heard stories of Andrew Murrays trips to France when he was a little kid and how he fell in love with Rhone wines. I learned when he went to Australia at the age of 18 to study viticulture. The list goes on and on. I also got opinions on food pairings and what mood each wine would go with. Awesome!

Variety & Quality- I could of purchased a bottle for white drinkers, Viognier was one of my favorite whites that I have tasted in all of Central Wine Country.

I could of purchased a bottle to pair with Thanksgiving... Yes Thanksgiving. Thats a drinkable red that could adapt like a chameleon (Esperance). I really think this wine is like training wheels on a bike, a perfect wine to give to white wine drinkers who are open for change. A long day at work and all there is is a coffee cup, this wine, and a friend with good conversation.

There were Syrahs with tons of range. Big, high alcohol, fruity, hot Cali style. Then there was wine that, as Kelly suggested, could be sipped like a Cognac. Oak, tobacco, chocolate, ect. These wine would hold up to the snobby(ist) of wine drinker.
The Rockstar of the bunch was the 11. Thats what I walked away with and I already have the occasion and people that I will be drinking that with.
Oh I did not just walk away with that bottle, no sir. I also signed up to the elite wino club. I seriously think I will have 78 bottles at my door step in Oct. and no money... Owell

Price- 9 wines on the list and there is a good chance you may hit bonus wine... Please don't say thats steep. If so you may be better off doing a Pabst Blue Ribbon tasting. As for bottles, I was really surprised at the price and how low they were.  I am looking at the tasting list now, which of course changes, and it ranges from 15-36$!

Tasting room- Small? Ok 80% of Los Olivos rooms are small. They did add couches outside. I really have to say though... and this is not for every tasting room in Los Olivos, but in general I don't think that Los Olivos tasting rooms (the ones in the general area of Grand St.) are really made for the huge 'bachelorette" size parties. Foxen Canyon and the scattered wineries throughout the valley are more equipped.

Side note- I think they should make a tasting room called bachelorette tasting and just set a bunch of rose's, Champagne, and desert wine boxes out. They could have little novelty penis's all over the place and Thunder from Down Under could pour the wines? Huh? Ya I know if you read this you are agreeing with me!

So there it is. All around, at bare minimum, worth the stoping in. The Yelp reviews for most of the tasting rooms are pretty right on except for this one. Yelp has never really steered me wrong, so a high Yelp five to all of you Yelpers... Except fine dinning... Fine dinning is all over the place but I  understand that. Since Americans are used to giant portions and low prices, some people dont understand how you could pay... Sorry thats another time

I aplaude Andrew Murray. He is a RockStar wine maker. He takes his inspirations and then creates his own version but without the restrictions of say... The AOC. He and other people like  Keith at Saarloos, Carharrt's,  Yost at Flying Goat, ect. These guys in my opinion are making Central California wines a force!

    Elvis has left the building...

Don't go.  It's that simple.  This place is only famous thanks to Sideways and not because the wine they make is any good.  It's lighter fluid.  And the place is packed.  And the girls pouring are obnoxious.  Avoid it.  Toss out the free tasting coupon you came across and just move on.  You wouldn't get excited for a free tasting of Old Crow Bourbon so don't get excited about Andrew Murray.

***I've since been contacted by Mr. Andrew Murray.  Before I even had a chance to put the finishing touches on this blog post I was posting them on Yelp when he spotted it and called me to the mat.  I've got to say, upon further review, of the above review, it's a little harsh.  That doesn't mean I'm changing it.  Not yet anyway.  I will be taking up Mr. Murray's invitation and we will be stopping by again.  I would love to love this wine.  I want to love every wine.  What can I say, I've got a problem.  Also, as it turns out Mr. Murray read the blog and is a fan... or at the very least he was wise enough to recognize me as someone that responds favorably to praise.  Empty or otherwise.  See you in a few months, Mr. Murray.  Quick question though - What's an appropriate number of friends to bring along?  I was thinking twenty.  Kidding, kidding.  The LG and I appreciate the invite and we would never take advantage.  You do have a place for the two of us to crash, right?  ***

Cute tasting room in downtown Los Olivos
    $10 per person tasting fee
Tip: Get two for one tasting coupon from one's hotel
Most of the wines were blends that seemed to be on the liquid Kool-Aid level
Liked the Stolpman Syrah (they pour about five different Syrahs)
    Liked the Eleven "Unplugged" blend
Wine barista, Tracy, very knowledgeable & cool

Not a fan of the stainless steel counter tops and the white walls.  Appearances aside, the wines were rough and flat.  All of the wines lacked complexity and had an astringent characteristic to them.  There is so much competition in Los Olivos at this point I could give you a 3 day itinerary (10-15 tasting rooms) that would not include Andrew Murray.

    Ten dolla make you holla!

    Make me holla?

Well, it contributed to a nice buzz, anyway.

I spent the weekend in Wine Country many moons ago for my last birthday. The BF and I drove up and booked our stay at the Victorian Mansion and our agenda for the weekend was simply - rest, relax, drink wine, eat good food, and visit the Neverland Ranch gate! (eee heee) We accomplished all and it was a lovely weekend.

Friends Liz O. and Jeff L. met us for the day to join in on the wine tasting and dinner that evening. It was per Liz O. that we found ourselves at Andrew Murray for an afternoon tasting and I was SUPER HAPPEE.

While I'm not versed in wine like some of my wino friends, I DO love Syrah. It's my absolute favorite; I love bold, full-bodied reds and especially love Syrah that carry notes of chocolate, pepper, and/or deep berries. Yum.  Most of the wines we sampled at Andrew Murray were Syrah and were quite good. So yes - I was super happee.

The staff are extremely friendly and know their stuff. We were met with smiles and an engaging, friendly vibe. I want to join their wine club in the future. 2 bottles shipped quarterly sounds fantastic to me!

$10 for 10 tastings... You get your bang for your bucks here.. the wines are "OK"... what can you expect.. 10 tastings!!  The tasting room is a decent size, not too big, not too small, but on crowded weekends, you may have to manage a squeeze in there.

The tasting room is located in Los Olivos, a small town with many little tasting rooms next to each other.  This area/tasting room is a great spot to come to if you are on a time constraint and cannot make it to the wineries withe vineyards.

This is a great spot for you to come with a big group to try different wines, and it gives you a good buzz too..

So it would be pretty much impossible for me to rate ANY of the tasting rooms I visited in Los Olivos below 5 stars, just because I'm such a lover of the Rhone style wines that thrive in this area. And I'm a total wino.
First stop on the self guided wine tasting tour was Andrew Murray and it was a great way to get things started. First of all the air conditioning was heavenly. On a 104 degree day it was amazing to get out of the hot car and into a brightly lit, clean and cool space and get our wino on. The server (is that what these people are called?) was a very nice lady who was extremely knowledgeable about the winery and the brand. It seemed that she had been brainwashed with talking points about the brand and I felt that the wine should speak more for itself than anything. It was a bit sales-y and shpiel-y. After listening to her repeat the same tidbits and stories to multiple parties I was sort of disenchanted. I'd agree with other Yelpers in saying that the pours were a little skimpy, but there were 10 wines so that does add up quickly.Either way, I enjoyed the wines and returned at the end of the day to buy a few bottles. The wine club seemed cool but I was a bit strapped for cash. I will be back to Andrew Murray!

Andrew Murrary was stop three of four on my wine tasting venture. I love the part of town (is this downtown?) that this tasting room is in. Very quaint and cute. Parking seemed like a problem. The girl in the tasting room was very friendly and knowledgeable and stayed with su and chatted the entire tasting.

As others have stated, if you are a Shiraz fan this place is for you! Also, compared to the other stops, you get 10 tastings for $10 which is a great deal. I ended up purchasing a spicy Shiraz (can't remember which one) for my sister and her boyfriend and Esparance for myself. Andrew Murray's 2005 Esparance is 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and 15% Mourvedre.

Very reasonable prices for quality wine and service.

Andrew Murray if nothing else,  consistently makes good wines. His Syrah's are warm, full and peppery. The RGB is the perfect summer wine served slightly chilled. Do yourself a favor this summer and go to Andrew's website and order yourself a bottle of the Rose and RGB.

UPDATE: I just had an 05' Roasted Slope Syrah. Amazing.

This tasting room was probably the best spot for me in Los Olives.
$10 dollar tastings -- which are pretty standard in that area.

I am normally not a Syrah type of broad...but Andrew Murray's Syrah was quite different and amazing.
I bought two bottles of Syrah and we joined the wine club.
I wouldn't say it's ridiculously expensive...Firestone is pretty ridiculous in price and I must admit, their wine was far from impressive.

The AM tasting room itself is small and quaint. I enjoyed being around other winos and gabbed with a few folks.

I recommend Andrew Murray if you're looking for a very deep and fruitful Syrah reminiscent to a Steltzner Merlot (2003). I think they may be equal in price even.

And you definitely don't have to take MY word for it.

Andrew Murray was the second stop on our wine tasting tour (okay, MY wine tasting tour) around Los Olivos. The tasting room is housed in a smallish space right on the main street, and we were directed here as soon as I professed myself a Syrah-lover. And am I....

For $10 you get about ten different pours, so there's plenty to try. Andrew Murray's emphasis is on Rhone varietals (for those of you who aren't wine experts, think French, and think Syrah and Viognier), so don't show up expecting a heavy, smooth, highly perfumed Syrah - it ain't gonna happen. These wines are not your typical California, New World versions; they are much lighter, more subtle, and less forward.

The Syrahs were good (it's nice to be able to taste a few different offerings, some blended as the usual GSM, some single-origin, and compare the nuances of the vineyards and varietals), but my surprise favorite was a lush, deep and oh-so-viscerally satisfactory Grenache. Just lovely, and it's rare to see this varietal mostly by itself due to its sometime propensity to flabbiness. Not this release, however, which says more about Andrew Murray's skill (to me) than my sips of the Syrahs.

The tasting room is also now been changed into a cold feeling room with a brushed metal bar, and small table of AMV gifts.

Friendly tasting room staff and a delectable late harvest viognier. Loved the Reidel glass with tasting fee. Also a fan of the "Enchante"

This is a minimalist tasting room in Los Olivos. The town itself is charming,  brick facade, colorful wood shutter windows, just beautiful.

The room is not that big with a 15 feet long bar, they have 8 - 10 wine for each tasting. When I was there, everything already taste good, they have cheese bread stick on the side for you, I end up enjoying those more than the wine.

I didn't really like the service there that much, but I still end up bought a lot from them.

And the next day when I came back  home, the same stuff I bought from Andrew Murray was sold at COSTCO for almost half the price at the tasting room. I feeled ripped off.

Pretty pricy tasting fee to distract from ne'er do wells but a bright and friendly atmosphere and with 8 wine tastings, I'm sure you can't do anything but be all rosy cheeked and smiling when it's done.

Very minimalist, no frills and wonderful syrah.

Great tasting room, great staff, great wines, great experience. We were here last week, 10/16/11. They had 8 wines on the list, and it was mostly reds which is great for me because I prefer reds. The wine here was very good. It was only $10 a tasting. This tasting room had the most wines and best value of any of the rooms we visited on this trip. The air conditioning was nice and the couches were very comfortable. They had a game out on the table that my girlfriend had a lot of fun playing. It was like trivial pursuit with wine questions. We almost felt like Andrew Murray invited us over to his house, and his wonderful staff only enhanced the experience. They seem to really like working for him. We purchased the game and some wine as well. Stand outs were: Tracy and Stephanie. If either of you girls read this, I would like to thank you again for being so kind. You made our day. We will be back to visit you again soon.

I loved this vineyard.  Just getting to the tasting room was a great bit of sightseeing.  The drive is simply gorgeous.
I enjoyed walking around the amazing grounds and hearing about the wines and winemaker.  Our tasting room guy was a tad self-important, but so are many of the wine-folk out there in the world, so it shouldn't be surprising.
They make some decent, though not life-changing bottles of wine (their Esprance and Syrah's are pretty good).
Check them out if you're the Santa Ynez Valley - it's worth a trip.

I was at first a bit offput by the cold attitude of the pourers the first time I tried tasting in their Los Olivos tasting room.  Then when I went to a special wine festival tasting in their actual winery, I was drawn in by the quality of the Syrahs.  I actually broke down and became a wine club member.  If you want a really good example of all the varieties that they sell (they have a lot with the new pairing with Oak Savannah!), go to one of their special tastings during a wine festival weekend.  Then make your determination based on that.  They make some excellent wine.

UPDATE 4/6/08:  I tasted again in their Los Olivos room in February, and their pourers were more than friendly and helpful.  The room is just too small, though, when they have a crowd.  They need a bigger place.  Other than that, it's improved.  What a shame they're no longer going to be using the Oak Savannah vineyards in their winemaking.  I thought they made some tasty syrahs.

We stopped by here on our way back from Paso because my sister got us a gift certificate online. Were we surprised when we walked in and the pourer told us that didn't exist!

Turns out the certificates purchased online are only good for online shopping... which is a pretty crappy thing to learn about when you are there, ready to buy, and want to avoid shipping fees. We were able to work it out with them where we would order there and then they would ship to us (they waived the shipping fees for this) which was ultimately a happy resolution.

The wines here are still good. We tasted the 06 Viognier, 08 Sanglier Rose Camp 4 Vineyard, 07 Syrah Tous Les Jours, 07 Grenache, 06 Esperance, 06 Syrah Watch Hill Vineyard, 06 Syrah Stolpman Vineyard, 07 Syrah Terra Bella Vineyard, and the Days Off 07 Apres Ski and 05 Sweet Nothings. The wines are solid and flavorful-- we ended up with the Days Off wines (which Andrew makes on his days off from Andrew Murray-- or so it was explained) as they were really excellent!

I will say that after coming from Paso, the $10 tasting fee seems a bit steep. Being Los Olivos, too, it was a little less friendly and slightly more commercial than Paso. I'm not saying this in a bad way, just noting the differences of the tasting "regions."

In the end, I would still return to Andrew Murray.

The wine itself is pretty tasty but I'll be honest, you can't count on me since I'm not an avid wine drinker. I really enjoyed their red wines. The white wines were Ok.

I am also a very big SIDEWAYS fan, so I am slightly biased since it is mentioned in the movie.

My big draw is the town - Los Olivos. It's quaint and perfect for an afternoon stroll. If you visit Los Olivos, you need to stop by Andrew Murray tasting room.

When in Los Olivos there are a few things one must always do. One of them is hit the Andrew Murray Tasting Room. I have been regularly going there for a good 6 years. Yes, the room is a little on the sterile side, and we call it the dentist's office...if you want a cozy fireplace and dark wood surroundings...you'll have to head next door... but ignore that for now and focus on the wine here cause it's fantastic. They make great reds, and be sure to try their Rose, best I have ever had.

Tasting fees are standard in Los Olivos, and unfortunately they don't credit it against the wine you buy.  One look at the town shows you why - there's nothing but tasting rooms here (in fact, none of them have restrooms, you have to use the town "trailer") so once you park your bootie in wine town, you pretty much have no toher choice.  On the plus side, you can visit something like 15 wineries in an afternoon, and they'll all be on the same block.

That note aside, we really liked this place.  The contemporary, miminalist tasting room gave it a modern feel, and the pourer was friendly. We had been told that this wine region was Syrah country, but no place drove this home more than Andrew Murray, where they had maybe 10 Syrahs on the menu. We had a hard time keeping track of our favorites but we liked quite a few of them, and they were pretty well priced. I would return.

I joined the wine club right away after doing my first tasting at Andrew Murray. Each wine I tried had it's own personality and caused me to want to be a part of the creative and unique essence of Andrew Murray. I can't get over their blend: Esperance and enjoy the various local Syrahs.

You will love this crisp, modern, small town family feel and maybe like me you'll want to get in on the fun to enjoy the parties that they throw a few times a year on the back of the Firestone property. I make sure to head out to enjoy this wine in the midst of the grapevines and blue sky with a few friends at least once a year. Live music, great food and great people. There is a community that comes along with this glass of wine. Andrew Murray has created something great and I'm glad to get to enjoy it!

i wanted to like andrew murray alot more than i actually did.

while their 9 wine tasting for $10 dollars is a great value and their servings are marginally on the side of just right (i hate being underserved) there are only subtle variations on their selection which is mostly syrahs. so if syrahs are not your cup of tea you might want to skip this place.

however if you love syrahs, you'll definitely be in heaven. if you're like me you'll probably want to start with andrew murray on account that after trying out several tasting rooms you won't be able to appreciate the subtleties between all the syrahs on offer.

i found the staff very serviceable but not as warm or engaging as others tasting rooms. as well, the ambiance is not as homely as other tastings rooms. good place to just shop and go if you're well versed in their selection.

big tasting fee, bright and airy tasting fee, excellent syrahs.  I wouldn't normally do a $10 tasting fee, but for syrah I'll make an exception.  The Brave Oak in particular was amazing, but even the syrah tous le jours was quite palatable.  And the viognier was an excellent way to start.

bang for your buck! (all 10 of them!) one tasting was all we needed for the 11 types they were pouring.

Out of those, my favorites were the estate syrah and the oak savannah one thousand hills. Go figure that once your taste buds are confused, they pounce those on you at the end! But we did end up going home with those two and a shiny free wine club membership.

Appreciated the central location- even though I usually like to see the fruit on the vine and any charming cottage. But with the 100 degree weather, the central location, I mean a/c was spot on. Pourers were very friendly and not pushy, with good stories and pleasantries.

i'm just excited that these will be one-of-a-kind back in the bay!

(so excited that I am posting from my dIphone!)

My knowledgable companion knows Andrew Murray as one of the Rhone Rangers- specializing in Syrah & Viognier. They pour nine samples for $10, then invite you to re-taste.  The ladies behind the counter were intimately acquainted with the inner workings of the label, though my friend thought they talked too much. Favorite of the day: 2007 Syrah McGinley Vineyard- very balanced, lovely, smooth, dry, with sage, cherry, cassis, toasty oak but not overbearing $32 ready now & for several more years to come.

Oh baby I love Syrah's and they had about 4-5 of them that were all super nice. It's not very cheap, but we still ended up buying a case. Good stuff.

This is a fairly modern tasting room with good wines, but I found service and "charm" a bit lacking compared to other places in town. That said, they did have a very good deal going on cases of wine of their whites that I liked, so I ended up stocking up. I'd go to taste, but not to linger like at some of the other spots in town.

Syrah, syrah, syrah.  This guy does great syrah.  It was a bit overpriced in my book and the self congratulatory articles about what a genious the winemaker is (and how shocked the world is that one so young is so great) to me smacked of shallowness.  If the wine is good then that is the legacy, nothing else matters.

The atmosphere is pretty sterile here, but this is Syrah heaven.  I like the attitude of the wine maker focusing on Syrah and doing it very well.  If you wnat to try some big peppery Santa Barbara Syrahs, this is an excellent place to do it.  If they had a warm woody bar feeling environment where you could just hang out and sip, I would have given them 5 stars.  But I will go back here just the same.

Friendly service, but the wines were just OK.  I guess we're used to the Napa Valley wines so the big fruity wines weren't our cup of tea.

If you like subpar wines and a IKEA like tasting room, this is the spot for you!!  Oh, small pours too.  I always feel cheated when I get a thimblefull. Guess what!  pour me a few nice ones and I will probably buy!  Go to Epiphany up the street.  If you get the old guy, you've struck gold.  and make sure to get a bottle of Revelation.  One of the best I've had.

So tragic...came here about a year ago with my husband, and although the wines were top notch, the service that came with the tasting left a rancid taste in our mouths.  The girl at the counter was soooo busy talking about personal matters with her counterpart and another guest/friend, and treated us like we were intruding.  She sped through the pours with hardly a glance in our direction before resuming her oh-so-important conversation with her buddies.  Our attempts at engaging her in conversation (about the wine, no less!) were met with impatience and one-word replies.  So of course, we vowed never to return to Andrew Murray, and in our subsequent visits to Los Olivos/Santa Ynez, we had the pleasure of playing a game of "Let's Avoid Andrew Murray"--basically, going to every tasting room within a 500-ft radius EXCEPT for this place, and shaking a fist every time we walked by. :)

I was most excited for Andrew Murray because I heard such good things about it. For the 10 dollar tasting, I think it was my least favorite tasting of the entire trip. I liked the glasses, the staff was OK, and the tasting room was real boring to me. BUT, they had an Ok syrah on the list, i think it was the "everyday" syrah. Stop in to some of the other tasting rooms on wine alley before Andrew Murray. Carrina, and Daniel Ghers were both much better!
