They say that even a blind squirrel finds the occasional nut.

That's exactly how i felt when we stumbled onto one of the 10 best places i've had the pleasure to wine and dine in - in the restaurant semi-wasteland that is Nashville, Tn. Now don't get me wrong. there are many decent restaurants in Nashville - but finding a really great one in this part of the world? Well, after asking many familiar with the locale if a "French Laundry- like" or Charlie Trotter type of experience was possible. The resounding answer was "No - you're looking in the wrong town".

I'm happy to report that they were wrong - we found the nut. Yes, we were indeed looking for a special culinary experience. Food as art. An evening to remember. Andrew Chadwick's delivered on every count. Unfortunately, I'm not convinced that the dining scene in Nashville is sophisticated enough to support a purveyor of world-class cuisine -- to make matters worse it seems they are "invisible", at least to a lot of the folks that might otherwise recommend them. Hence and evening in which we ended up a with a very "personalized" experience. Not good for business long term, but for us - zowee!!

Brian - our maiterdee, waiter, and conversationalist for the evening was amazing.  His knowledge of the various components that comprise the culinary experience was impressive. I realize that a full house would have precluded the level of attention we received. Nonetheless, it certainly added to the evening for us.

I enjoyed the ambiance of the converted house. We started out in the "library" style bar area replete with one of the finest selections of libations i can remember in one place. The dining rooms were comfortable, if somewhat sparsely (some would say cleanly?) decorated.

The wine list was well researched. A nice blend of value-conscious offerings from many regions, as well as many truly excellent, if somewhat pricer, selections for the connoisseurs palate.

The menu was - as you would expect in this type of place- held to a reasonable number of selections across three courses.

Small bread balls graced our table, hot and fresh with some olive oil - they were delicious. Our tasting course began with a torchon of foie gras - think of cooked foie gras that has been pressed though a fine sieve and formed into chilled rolls. Phenomenal.

I followed with a confit of duck salad - well portioned and expertly prepared. We were drinking a very nice spanish red in the $60 range. My business associate had the coco blanc soup with chanterelles - which he raved about.

For my entree, Brain suggested something not on the menu - they were out of the lobster tail with truffled tagliolini pasta. So he suggested a side of truffled risotto and a venison chop. Un-fricken believable. The meat was more tender than the best fillet i've ever had -- it literally was fork tender.  My buddies lamb - wow. A lighter and more subtle lamb flavor than i've ever experienced. The sous-vide preparation style? count me in baby.

Portions were reasonable - not big or small - but just right for this type of dining experience.

After dinner we retired to the library for armagnac and a unique dessert - a rare prepared chocolate that cuts like butter surrounded by a variety of unusual spices. to "augment" the taste. Way cool.

The sequence of events(as explained by Brian) that led this napa-style eatery to pop up in nashville is not usual, and unlikely to be repeated. I hope they find the patronage to keep it alive. It would be a shame to loose it.

One more thing - they really need to bring back the chef tasting menu. I'd jump on that bad boy in a heartbeat.

Some will think of this as expensive - however it is no more expensive than a good steakhouse, and frankly far and above that more "standardized" dining experience. If your in Nashville - treat yourself. It's worth it.

This restaurant is definitely worth heading off the beaten path.  The chef/owner has renovated a great old house where he cooks with new technology.  I don't think anyone else in Nashville is equipped with a kitchen like this one.

I had a filet that was absolutely perfect.  Friends had fish and chicken and said it was great. I think the phrase "best chicken ever" was uttered a couple of times.  I knew the chef uses induction ranges, but after dinner I found out they also prepare food sous-vide (vacuum seal food in a bag and then cook it in relatively low temperature water for a long time).   My steak was cooked sous-vide then lightly seared, which explained how it was perfectly medium rare throughout.  The salads and appetizers are creative and taste great.  Excellent deserts.  Nice wine list, although few are available by the glass.

The service was very attentive without being intrusive. My only complaint is the atmosphere, which is ironic because the house is beautiful. We dined in one of the small dining rooms up front.  The only lights are from the overhead cans, so it gives the the room an impersonal feel.  Since there are only a handful of tables there are moments where the entire place gets quite.  Or even worse, all the other tables have a lull in the conversation and suddenly your telling your embarrassing story to the entire restaurant.  Some candles on the tables and a little music would would go a long way making the atmosphere just as good as the food.

I remember reading a lot about this place before it even opened, and I was looking forward to trying it out. My friend and I dined there in December, and it was definitely a wonderful meal.

First, though, let's talk about the space. The owner did a wonderful job renovating this beautiful old house for the restaurant. It is just gorgeous. My friend was in a chair waiting on me in this kind of library/bar space having a glass of wine by the fire. It was a great first impression, and the bartender/hostess immediately asked me what I wanted to drink and then made me a great Rob Roy.

I would say this is the closest I've come to having a "fine-dining" experience. The night we were there, Andrew Chadwick's was having a truffle tasting. My friend and I had never had truffles, so we had to order it. In truth, I'm not sure what the fuss is about truffles, but my friend said they were delicious. Our server was great and explained everything on the menu to us (there was some kind of fish I had never heard of). Even though it's "fine-dining", the waiter wasn't at all condescending and had spot-on recommendations. I had a great piece of steak which had a coffee rub on it.

Even though we were stuffed, we weren't disappointed by dessert. I think I had an apple dish that had lots of individual, kind of deconstructed, apple treats.  Overall, my friend ended up liking Chadwick's a lot more than I did, but I think it's worth the dining experience in a part of Nashville you may not have been to.

Save up, you'll need some cash (that Rob Roy I had was filled with $20 Scotch. Yikes!) to enjoy Andrew Chadwick's (thankfully my friend paid). I think it's a welcome addition to the Nashville dining scene, and if you are looking to impress a date or a client, take them here.

It's a shame this restaurant has closed, because I would say that my dining experience twice bordered on 5 stars, but I reserve 5 stars for something truly mind blowing.  They came close...very close.

Delicious perfect food, appropriately sized portions, a quiet dining experience ...almost.  The first time we dined there was a couple who were terribly loud and liked to talk to their server throughout the entire meal, at times about politics.  It was awful - especially because they were the only other diners in the room.

The second time was also delicious.

Then I heard they switched to a prix-fixe menu, sort of the death knell for fine dining and then it was closed.

I still dream about the perfect, small, and crunchy chocolate flake cookie presented at the end of the meal.  A nice touch, reminiscent of the truffles or small candies that used to be served gratis with the bill at the end of most fine dining experiences I had when a child, in a different, more gentle time (the 80's..ha!).

It seemed that all of the foodies flocked to the restaurant, patronizing it extensively and then last fall everything sort of went to hell and a handbasket and they cut back.  I don't know what happened exactly, but I am glad I had the pleasure of dining twice.

I shed salty (fleur de sel) tears over the news.  Does anyone know where the chef went?

I went here for a special occasion - which may be the only time i ever get to go (as i cannot afford to go here unless someone else pays)... but i will always hope that another special occasion will bring me back.

the menu is small and not very detailed - but all you have to do is ask your server and he/she will explain in detail anything you want to know about the dishes.  they started us all off with a squash blossom filled with an herbed goat cheese (i think, i had so many things to take in that night i can't remember all the details).. this was a nice touch as i've always wanted to try squash blossoms before.  For my first course I had crispy sweetbreads on a stone fruit salad.  Sweetbreads are one thing i never anticipated to find on a Nashville restaurant menu - so i was very pleased that I was going to have the opportunity to try this for the first time.  It was wonderfully cooked and the sweet/tart flavors of the stone fruits only helped the salty buttery sweetbreads.  My father had the pork belly with the 65 degree egg on frisee.  He raved about it - it was delicious.  For my entree I had a striploin steak that was flavored with truffles and a beef tartar topped with fresh parsley (which they grow all their herbs in the garden outside).  It also came with a truffled hen egg...  and a side of root vegetables.  I think being a fan of truffles helps when dining at this restaurant... thats for sure.  Everyone else in my party seemed to be enjoying their meals as well - again - never expected to eat this kind of meal in nashville!
I failed to mention they have quite an extensive wine list...  and a really nice wine list at that.  Surprisingly - there are a lot of affordable bottles on the menu.
So for dessert - my family all ordered different things - so i cant really remember what the desserts were since for my dessert I had an amazing glass of 40 yr tawny port.  I don't think i've ever had a port that I've enjoyed that much!

So in conclusion - if you are still reading - I highly recommend this place.  Keep in mind that it is a unique restaurant and the ingredients aren't common in most places around Nashville - so you may have to be adventurous in your menu choice - but you will be pleased!  And it is rather expensive, though considering the ingredients its very moderately priced!  Does that even make sense?  And plan at least 2 hours to eat dinner...  this is a time to sit back and enjoy your company, enjoy the wine, and enjoy the food!  I don't think you can rush through a meal at this place nor do I think you'll want to.  I just can't wait for the opportunity to go here again.
